Well I switched out to the x38 Maximus SE and no longer have any Raid issues so im inclined to believe that something strange is going on with raid controller...
I still have my blackpearl and will likely fire it up again soon for benching on my cascade but its a pitty because this mobo was meant to be my primary rig. Hopefully you guys will have better luck...

I do have one wierd thing going on with this board. If I take out the video card, the motherboard will not see the card until I turn the monitor off and back on. Took a little while to figure out. Other than that I love this board, but I think the DFI I had in the AMD days was a better built board.

Erm, i can't remember the batch no, as i don't have the boxes with me, probably will go look for the Intel id proggy later, but it's VID is 1.2500. never thought that VID would affect a chip's ocability that much - noob me lol. anyway, my PSU is a SS OP 750W, liquid cooled by an apogee GTX, the idling temps at 3.6 at the stated Vcore is around 39-44C, kinda high lol... i followed your settings, damper is enabled, is the vdroop that high? i'll try out the ref volt settings now. thanks :) will report back soon.Quote:

it might have been... but this is my second mobo already. i purchased my system and all its parts mid september and ive had so many problems with parts dying or not working that i just wanted a functioning system. and now i can finally enjoy my system that i built.
i am starting to hate this board.
i got hit by some strange overclocking problem. settings that will work are not causing massive problems. refusing to even post and reboot then resetting the overclocked settings.
even when i tried less aggressive timings it wouldnt work properly. 5mins ago it displayed some bugs with memtest and kept showing some weird symbols in the test percentage. i rebooted and it refused to post.
it did shutdown and reboot by itself several times but wouldnt post.
the only times it decided to boot properly was when it was on default settings.
damn this bloody board. bios support sucks.
edit. by sunday if the problems persist, it's going to the shooting range....the target end of it.

Tried bios 0404 and cpu temp reading went up over 15C (read much higher than core temp) and could not get out of 1x for pci-x for the gpu. Back to 0402 and all good again. :confused:
O.K., I know I'm beating a death horse but today I decided to finally experiment with RAID Controller on this mobo and yes, this controller is broke, sometimes the HDDs will appear and then just like that they disappear. But unfortunately I'm too lazy to get a new mobo and resinstall drivers and such. It sounds like they got a batch of bad NBs or something or they not coding the stuff right in the BIOS. Shame, shame.

Do you need the two little fans if your water cooling?

Disable the CPU fan detection in the bios mate, that will get rid off that error message or hook up a case fan or such to the CPU fan connector... it might be that it just boots at stock again due to that malfunction the baords detects...
Don't worry about the 3.01ghz see it as a gift from Asus as their 333FSB prolly is 334 or such in reality
How do i disable that? Can't seem to find it anywhere..
And is there a way for me to go to bios 0402? It seems as the best for overclocking

I can skip this and load default settings..
Sometimes this happens when the system is unstable. Try go stock everything and then go slowly. Also, make sure you set it to "Halt no errors" or something similar. If you don't know where certain stuff is, go READ THE MANUAL!
Situman it does this with everything standard.. Even when i just reboot from windows it says new cpu installed.

Memory is a new batch of the OCZ flex 9200 memory...
watercooled the whole rig from mosfets to chipsets to gpu to memory.

now this pc stays closed period. no upgrading this mother, will sell her on when its time to upgrade next xmas.

Make sure that you have the TWO 4 pin power connectors connected at top left of board (you will have to remove a cover on one of them). Your PSU will have to be good also ;)Quote:

With the new bios i have memory problems. Without overclock and memory with factoty voltaje(2V for Gskill 2x2Gb PC8000) in memtest for windows have errors... In bios 404 i dont have any problem...

Well I saw no benefit going to 402 from 202 and as I am still running a Q6600 there is no need to upgrade as everything works fine for me. No AHCI problems etc!
0404 very stable for me with my q6600.- some extra volt setting on PPL from 0202. I never had any SATA disk issues and still dont. Also ran it with an e6850 at 3.6 on stock volts - not ES. Would boot upto 495x8 with more volts but not prime stable although I didnt try very hard. Make sure u use ezflash and a usb drive - I would avoid Asus update as there are loads of MB that flashes have failed on using it. It did for my P5K deluxe but probably because I hadnt reset the overclocks to default. Always safest to flash outside of the operating system. I just have to get the temp back down before I can think about a overnight prime test yet.

I also noticed that my CPU temp reported 10c higher than 0402 did with 0404 but I am only concerned with Copretemps which were reported the same - running 33c on my Q6600 idle air 60c load. Using PC Wizard to report temps. My old E6600 on a P5W DH used to need BIOS settings of vcore 1.5v (vdroop was higher than premium) FSB =1.3, NB=1.55,SB=1.2 to run 400x9. That idled 46c load 60c lapped with an Arctic Freezer Pro with AS5. I now use MX-2 as no cure time. Check your HS seating - if 65c is the Core load temp that seems high for water cooling at the speed your running at. A lot of the E6600 weren't capable of 3.6 whatever the volts - from what I remember they did run pretty hot as you pumped the volts up!. I would also run T2 until you get your o/c stable .Quote:

The one thing is I am sure, the TT tribe unit is a childs toy not a real water system the pump is one of the slowest units TT ever made and the rad is no great thing either the only reason I bought it was I got it last year when I was OC,ing my AMD sandy core and it was on closeout for $40 after a rebate. Since the unit served me well but its days are numbered and the water block is OK but again 1/4 lines? Yuck !
I am using Zalman grease and did reset the water block on the cpu once and did see that helped. I think the grease had somehow settled over the year since I used it, so I gave it a stir with a toothpick, re-applyed and it seemed to work much better after that. I want to try The liqiud metal stuff next when I set up my new cooling and lap the CPU.
I have not been using T1 timings yet in this bios and have added no voltage and feel sure with good cooling and some added voltage here and there I should see some great results with this chip revision B2 Stepping 6 . I believe B2 chips have done pretty well. My CPU Voltage seems right dead @1.3 on auto. I am sure that a 1 GHZ overclock is sure with nothing more to do but a bump more in FSB but I will withhold from that untill better cooling is installed.
P5K p Vdroop whats that? *lol* :D the best thing about this board is thats all but history it may be a pain in the arse to work the bugs out on this thing but its the king of Vcore damping.:up:

Glad you made progress. The MB really shows its stuff best with a Q6600 though. Be suprised if you make 3.6 on an E6600 with less than 1.45v - things must have improved since I had one-lol! I wouldnt bother with the liquid pro - really messy to get on and off for little gain if any over latest non conductive pastes. Do a razor check on the CPU before you consider lapping - if its not concave and flat already its probably not worth the effort lapping . I really liked Coretemp they just need to get the driver signed to make it great. I like real simple program for simple tasks. Speedfan was nice and I still use it now for just every day use and keep in mind how much its off. I will try the PCwizard too.
I will check the cpu with a straight edge for flat but I just thought that the polished surface helped too. Also it don't cost much but a bit of time and every little bit helps. That was why I thought lap the block the cpu and use the liquid pro, If I get 2C for each thing I just get 6c cooler. Just my 2 cents :shrug:
Dont disagree and the MB will be good for some time yet - I still have an E6850 but 4 cores better than 2 going forward - it wont just be for video rendering/editing - future games are going to be designed around multithreading. They give out a fair bit of heat when o/c but not any more than the E6600 from my experience. They need less volts for higher o/c and thats with 4 cores. The GO's are achieving 3.6 on air as the norm with around 1.4v or less with some going to 4.0GHz with later batches of GO SLACRs. I don't have the raid problem. I just use my one lonley Raptor for my OS and 2 arrays wit PCI Cards. Hardware is getting to the point you can not depend on it and onboard raid is useless when the board goes down or you want to make a change most time your raid data will be a loss. The way I do it, no problem take the card the raid and put it where ever you go. I whould not for any reason ever be use onboard raid. I would like to see them do away with all that onboard junk they put on nowdays, its all low quality stuff anyway losy sound cards. If onboard video was never any good what make anyone think onboard raid is any better or onboard sound. All that onboard stuff does is work the southbridge and northbidge to death I never thought I would see a day I would think to add cooling to my south bridge *ROFL*Quote:

Unless I am mistaken I believe all P35 chipset MB are PCI-E 1.1 - you have to go X38 for PCI-E 2.0. Should be nothing to stop u using a 2.0 card you just wont get the benefit of the increased transfer bandwidth for what its worth..Quote:

If the flash failed to verify after erasing the EEPROM its RMA time. The chip is soldered on. There are a lots of failed updates using Asus update mainly because you forget to set the o/c setting to defaults before rrunning - I know cos I did the same on an Asus deluxe which is whu I now have a premium as an RMA replacement-so it wasnt all bad -lol. Too true - you are gambling with potentially killing your MB if ithe BIOS doesnt work for your overclock and you have to flash back with the method posted by TinTin. Its not guaranteed to work as it uses Asus update - some of the people RMAing their boards have found out the hard way. I noticed someone on the delux thread tried it and killed his MB too!Quote:

This Asus board kills me with not putting the bios in a socket. The P5k P Is really not such a pearl when it come to layout either. No bios rest button and the Cmos Bat is under the video card. I had to tear half my rig apart just to clear my Cmos when I was getting ready to flash got lucky and did not have to do it again after flashing.

I got a program like it from HP Works in Vista X64 just fine you just need to set your folder views to show hidden sys files so it can copy the bootsector right from a floppy and that worked great.
I would think it will be a week of so now for me to get back to testing on the Yorky. I think this will get some interest here for real, not many care about clocking up and old E6600 but now a chip that not even released that should be fun!! I got the thing for $100 to boot. I saw the CPUZ shots at 3.2 running cool and pretty low voltage but off the top of my head don't remember to numbers, just the fact that I was impressed with its numbers and 15000+ with a 8800gs it did 15000+ 3Dmark 6, So stay tuned. I will post the results and let you all know how that works out.ASAP :D

So I just build a new pc around Asus p5k Premium and has been reading through this thread. Disturbing info. I still have 7 days to return my motherboard if it's really important.
Have been testing the ICH9 controller. I only have one SATA 2 drive:WD7500AAKS. I installed it as AHCI succesfully in winxp 32bit and Vista 64bit. No eventviewer warnings. Runs perfect.
So I wanted to test the raid config. Borrowed 2 wd800jd Sata 2 drives and enabled RAID in bios. Booted and configured stripe Raid0 and tried installing winxp 32bit.
However the problem is that my sytem refuses to boot of any winxp installation CD (I have several). The CD spins up but it doesn't start booting. The cursor in upper left corner just sits there blinking and nothing happens ?
What could be causing this. I would really like test if raid works on my p5k.
If I change setting in bios to ACHI it boots just fine on winxp installation CD..
Anything I missed ?
Any helpful comments will be much appreciated....

Just give it some patiance this is a great board, (P5K P). If you overclocking nothing with a P35 chip set can run with it. There has been some issues with onboard raid, but I think bios update 504 has fixed it for most but some have been reporting a bit of memory overclock loss with bios 504 and wanting to stay with 404. The Issues with raid comes with sata 2 drives only SATA 1 is fine and if I was doing raid drive for my OS using the onboard raid, I would only use a pair of raptor 150 drives and they are sata 1 there for no issue. Also No need then for ACHI you can just leave it IDE from what I have read. I only use a Single Raptor 150 myself for my OS work with everything, I also don't think raid is faster for your OS and more of a pain then its worth. Raid if for large data read and fasted through put and a bit slow for access times. Your OS has no large file transfer just lots of reads and write and lots of fast access, One Raptor will get the job done.
Now putting any kind of raid for storage on a onboard raid controller is really not smart ever because if you ever want to make a board change chances are you will lose your data.
SO since your using drives not your own for testing, and save yourself the time and effort. I would say get yourself a pair of Raptors 74 GB 16 MB buffer or 150 GB no one has issues with them remember there SATA 1 but don't let that make you think anything on the planet is faster or more dependable Raptors rule and the rest drool!!
I have 2 arrays in my rig for storage both on PCI cards one sata 2 with Promise TX2300 and the other on a old Silicon Image IDE both have not given me troubles both are strip raid but not set bootable, so I just always leave them unpluged when doing installes. I have seen many troubles with installes of Vista if you have any drive connected at install that is dynamic drive. Vista Freaks on that stuff even if you have Ultimate because of the multi install DVD that Vista uses. I spent hours on the phone with MS before I found that out on my own. MS tech is Crap!! but I thought I would give it a try for gins and gigles.
There are lots more guys in here to give you a hand with the raid set up that have been wiill to deal with the isssue caused more by the P35 chip set I believe. A RMA is not really needed in your case but wait a bit for some of the other here Members to help you out for sure on that.

Sorry if my last post was a little unclear. I'm not looking to get a raid setup. Was just testing for a pal who also has p5k premium. He gets BSODs if he tries to install any sort of raid on the ich9 controller. Just doing it to test/provoke the ich9 controller to verify if it is buggy as I have read SO many threads about.
My own drive is the WD7500AAKS + some WD ide's on a promise controller.
Just discovered that it was the promise controller that somehowe confused the ích9 controller. Removed it and now everything runs perfect in Raid0 :clap:
Funny thing though that any winxp install disk will load with all other BIOS settings except Raid :cool: Luckily I only need AHCI.

Overclocking on this board is real easy untill you get over about 380 or 390 FSB, Then I had to drop my CPU multi and then you start to run into that doublle pump boot that plaugue most P35 chip sets. But anyway I think what your looking for is the basics http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overc...s-p5k-add.html This guide will show all the the able disable things for this board. Step 4 pushing the FSB up and using memory dividers and such. (mostly you can bump the FSB 50 or so real easy mostly if you have any kind of good memory or use that memory Divider
Step 5 Tweaking Voltage and and Memory timing
And all along the way lots of testing with Memtest at first and then later when you push the FSB Prime testing in Widows.
Time and patience is the most of it and lots of reading. Its not as hard as it sounds. Google is your best friend. This forum has great members and for me they always seem to help out when I get stuck.

I got an 8400 a few days ago and have been playing with it. Have it overclocked and prime stable @4.04x445FSB on BIOS 0504. The problem are my temps in PC Probe and Core Temp seem really hot. When I touch the heatsink it's warm, so not sure if the P5K Premium has problems reporting the new wolfdale temps correctly, anyone else have this problem?

Is your 8400 Wolfdale A retail or a ES sample? I just bought a yorkie 2.33 ES and I was told that temp would have to be read with a thermal probe? Have you tried that to verifiy temps?
For those who updated BIOS but failed with NO BOOT, did you try to insert the CDROM disc came with the box into your CDROM? It should recover the BIOS to the old BIOS with the CDROM.
Crashfree recovery is worth a try if the BIOS is Corrupt but it aint going to work if the EEPROM has been erazed cos the MB wont post if it has. It will be dead as a DODO!Quote:
