Thx for the reply, hmm kind of worried of pushing that amount of volt earlier on. Was it really necessary to push that much of voltage early on? I though the E8400 can pull a 3.6 GHz without any need for added voltage?

500fsbx9 E8400 all settings auto but vcore and ram. What you see is what the mb sets in pc probe, I could prolly drop some of them. The everest shot is to show its not just a suicide run.

Just a quick note on removing the heatpipe cooling. I removed it all the other day cleaned it and put some AS3 on everything. One of the two fet coolers still had the plastic cover and the pipes to the sb needed some straightening.
The bios and everest do not show the temps any lower but I am stable with much lower motherboard voltages. Before I could not even post at 475 without 1.75Vnb and 3dmark06 would lock with less than 1.55HT. Now they run auto with Vnb at 1.47 and the HT at 1.23V. I also need less ram voltage?
The 500fsbx9 would prolly need 1.6Vcore and I am not ready to put that through this cpu yet just to see if its stable.
I had a Q6600 in on water. It did 4050mhz easy and I was trying for 4.1G but never got stable. I am running an E8400 in it now. At 4.27G its only 200 points behind the Q6600@4G in 3dmark06 overall. The E8400 gives a 10-12fps jump in the opening to proxycon over the Q6600, both at 4G.Quote:

Got a weird problem, my system boots normally. But when I reboot (Vista x64) my monitor doesn't get a signal. So no screen from the bios on till Windows. But my system is starting up, I manage to shut down the pc with my keyboard.
Just don't know what the problem could be. My whole system is new, incl. the monitor. Power should be fine, videocard could be to new for motherboard. So perhaps I need to wait for a bios update. Bios btw is set standard, haven't tweaked it yet.

I see that you seem to be the only one having any luck with a Quad core or Q6600 in particular... I have looked at your pictures but I still am a little vague on the exact settings that got you to where you could hit those FSB frequencies... Oh yeah and the bios I am confused on which bios you used to get the good OC on the Quad.. If those settings apply, did you get them on auto bios settings, or did you tweak the RAM settings?
Things to try/check:
1) Turn down the RAM frequency to 1066. Easy way to check best settings for RAM are with CPU-ID on the SPD tab.
2) try removing RAM and rebooting with different sticks. It could be a bad stick...
3) Could be a weak/defective PSU. Can you test output volts?

Well basically I got myself a Q9550 last week and I have been doing a bit of OCing on my Striker II Formula 780i.
The problem is, i have hit a wall at 3.5GHz and was looking for a bit of advice on how i might be able to get a better clock.
I can keep all the voltages on auto with a FSB of 412 and a multi of 8.5 to get 3.5GHz no worries, but once i up the FSB a bit more i get a No-Post.... :(
I have tried upping the voltages, with the max i have tried here:
CPU Voltage: 1.5V
CPU PLL Voltage: 1.6V
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.5V
NB Core Voltage: 1.6V
SB Core Voltage: 1.6V
1.2V HT Voltage: 1.5V
And im also using the 1101 BIOS with settings:

NVIDIA GPU Ex: Disabled
CPU Internal Thermal Control: Disabled
Limit CPUID MaxVal: Disabled
Enhanced C1 (C1E): Disabled

I am sure that the MotherBoard FSB isn't stopping me because after dropping the multi to 7x i am able to take the FSB all the way up to 475 with no problems at all.
Also the temps are fine. CPU around 40-50 and MPC around 60
So i was hoping someone, who has used a 780i or otherwise, might be able to offer a bit of advice so that i can get a better clock out of this chip:)
I am just a bit unsure which voltages will allow this? More on the NB? Or if the 780i is crapping out with the quad?

Thanks, that's promising. Might do that instead of getting the E8400, since the Q6600 is likely to beat it anyway despite a lower clock (in 3DMark06 at least). I'm using my computer mainly for high-end flight simming, and a quad seems to have a significant performance edge over duos in this situation.Quote:

Ford250 will have a more definitive answer, but my thoughts...
if you want an actual Vcore voltage of 1.5, you will have to set bios at ~3.0-3.5 higher than actual. Your voltage looks low. I'd suggest increasing it. The rest:

I had brilliant time with my 680i, loved it, except it was stuck at about 3.1ghz once I put my Q6600 in it. I then got an X38, so now I know what my quad is capable of (3.6 @ 1.35v real) I was hoping I could run around this with the 780i.
I was hoping to have as much luck as fordf250, im not attempting to get massive clocks... just nice stable 3.6 or something....
Reason for getting the 780i though, is after using a 680i and the memory clocking potential there is no going back!!. Not to mention with the E6600 in it, my old 680i board ate my X38 for breakfast in benching clock for clock (although everyone seems to argue with that)..
Cpu and GTX on 1/2" liquid with MCR320 and D5 vario pump, have load of fans, even an antec spotcool right on NB. I will post up when I get some distilled water or some coolant for system.
Hopefully all goes well.
Can I ask any advice fordf250 for running 3.6 on the quad? Im not putting liquid on NB this time... If the board wont work, i'll get rid of it. Sick of faulty or dodgy products, try every thing to fix which in the end voids warrenty, and I'm always left out of pocket.

Thanx for the education aiding my double cherry-popping first build / first overclock! Got my Q6600 to 3.285GHz on air then stripped her down for some watercooling. Mostly stock voltages but can't wait to tamper with newfound knowlage on GTL REF V's, hoping to find a stable 3.8GHz once liquified. Just finished making SB waterblock too.
Got one niggling question tho.... EVERYTHING working well but after Shut-Down but three lights stay illuminated and never turn off :
1- ROG logo on NB heatsink
2- Blue Supreme FX stock soundcard logo
3- Numbers lock light on keyboard
Is this normal, or mobo fault or PSU fault ??? :shrug:

All the ASUS Mobo do that, I have a Maximus same thing but more of my lights stay on... Totally 100% normal my friend has the Striker II extreme same thing...
So has anyone seen how to enable TCP/IP Accelleration on this thing? NAM doesnt seem to be showing it.. even the latest version.. Only shows that shows that first packet option in which imo is useless.
I was gaining a huge boost on TCP/IP Accelleration back on my Striker Extreme.. wonder where it went on the Striker II Formula ???

Guacomole, to answer your question: no, I'm unable to reach the same timings with 4GB... I did all of my overclocking only with 2 sticks. Although I can reach 1266mhz with 4GB, the timings had to be loosen though to 6-5-5-10... :(
On the other hand, I can run 4GB at 920mhz at 4-5-4-12 1T
But I've reached my 'stable state' and am not going to play with overclocking for a while and enjoy some quality games (SLI + 4GB).... well at least until I build my custom phase change system this summer :rolleyes:

Vladmax - I may try polishing the heat pipes if my temps are high. One question if I may - How did you remove/re-fit the clips that hold the pipes to the board?

When I tried to post for the first time, nothing happened. Then I saw the connector from mu PSU was half out of the socket, after wondering what could be wrong for the best part of 2 hrs! arghh!

Well, I've screwed up. I removed the NB-SB-Fet coolers. The thermal paste was was solid rock hard and difficult to remove. I scraped and sanded it off carefully. I snipped the fet coolers and replaced them, and put Thermaltake NB coolers on the NB and SB. After re-installation, motherboard won't post. My poster cord got screwed up about a month ago, so I can't tell why it won't post. Removed the battery and left it overnight. No joy.
I guess I will buy another board for the poster, and change out the Cooling system so I can RMA this board, hehe.
On the upside, bought Patriot PC9600 RAM and it is fantastic.
PC6400 Kingston HyperX 4-4-4-12-2T @ 888 Mhz best bandwidth was ~8400 MB/sec
PC9600 Patriot Viper 4-4-4-12-2T @ 1200 Mhz initial bandwidth 9600 MB, without getting into tighter timings. For the price, the Patriot RAM is fantastic.
Well I was able to do some more changes, now hav CPU at 3.64ghz and ram at 1010mhz 4-4-4-12 but still wont boot with 1t, though it does post.Quote:

Did run 3dmark and nuclear, and SPi, this thing is a slug compared to the X38, but its more reliable, and easier to use, so I'm happy. Will post scores when I get some time.

Here some extract from core temp, been running longer now, but no point keep showing you, its only getting cooler, because ambient is dropping with night closing in, and with thermal paste burning in.
Contains hottest and coldest readings from that time, still priming though.

I read alot about the HS being no good over NB, I must have one that is an exception, it seems to work well enough, even with 1.63v. Gets quite warm, but not hot enough to be concerned.
Sorry to hear that. You need to use accetone or nail polish remover with a Q-tip to get the paste off. Be very carefull on the mb and dont hit any of the small resistors beside the nb and sb.Quote:

I removed the heatsink array from the new board, put the previously removed (from other board) fets on, my new thermaltake NB coolers on the NB and SB(impressive 4800+ RPM), lapped the e8400, (added AS5 to all) installed (carefully) the e8400, installed the z9700, and fired it up, checking the temps. Initial NB and SB temps were:
NB less 7c than prior best (bios)
SB less 8c than prior best (bios)
(Also installed my new Corsair RAM cooler)
After 4 hours running at 4.05 Ghz using orthos and Prime95, my CPU max temp has been 59c load, but is coming down as the AS5 works in, and max NB temp has also been 59c (according to temp sensor I mounted), now reduced to a pretty standard 54c after the AS5 is working in.
Once i get the kinks worked out at this frequency, I am going to work on a stable 4.5 Ghz. I had to go with my previous bios settings for over voltage, as trying to run on auto (except for CPU and Mem) kept failing.
New Patriot Viper PC9600 is now flying at 1230 Mhz at 5-5-5-15 @ 2.32v, though will run at 4-4-4-12 at 1200 Mhz @ 2.3v is not passing Prime95 or Orthos at the lower numbers. I might have to buy two more sticks of this awesome RAM since it should be able to run 5-5-5-12 with 4 sticks as easy was with 2. Best bandwidth so far with it (SiSoft Sandra) has been 9883 MB/s
any 4.5ghz stable config 4.1 max here
I have those set of vipers too but i'm having trouble getting just 1000mhz out of them nevermind their rated 1200mhz. also noticed some different timings per stick, check this out:

I noticed something about the gold plated southbridge piece on the southbridge: it's just a cover for the heatpipes. I tried removing it so I can slap on a Thermalright hr-05 heatsink over the copper plate but ended up damaging one of the heatpipes. Now the board won't POST. I'm going to get a new one next week, lap the chipset cooler and try removing that gold cover on the southbridge again. If anyone has good suggestions on safely removing the southbridge covdmer, I'm all ears :D

The other smaller unit (as per above) has air fromthe SB cooler blown straight across it.

Pic. I know the 9700 is oriented differently than normal, but with the large fan at the top, this works better.
I notice that like myself, anyone using a Q6600 on any 780 board, is getting absolutely horrid latency (like 70ns) and terrible bandwidth, no matter what timings.
Using the same timings as my 680i, I get horrible score, where I should be getting 44ns (which is what I was down to :) ) I'm not up in no mans land at 70+ns.
I see alot of people that are getting good latencies are using CPU's with a 333 native FSB, those of us getting suck scores are using CPU's with 266 FSB.
Is it possible that the board is relaxing (radically) the timings that we cant change to people with 266 FSB because of a strap change??
I suggest this because at 450FSB it is 69% overclock for a 266 native CPU, but only 35% for a 333 native CPU.
So what I'm saying is, board thinks its FSB is being overclocked a long way at 69% because it thinks its 266, and for you 45nm users it only thinks its being pushed 35% from 333.
If thats not the reason, then I got no idea what the go is, it just seems to be a trend.
Any evidence to back me up, or shoot me down, or anything?

When I was using my first striker,I was using a QX9650 and with auto trd I was getting this
By simply setting trd 5 I got this
I am almost sure I could get the same bandwith with my QX6850 too(at least after using the 9650 on the board).
Right now with my second board I have only the 6850 and I am getting horrible bandwith no matter what I am setting on trd.
The thing is that both chips have a native fsb of 333,so it can't be something related with fsb:shrug:
