***Asus Rampage III Extreme Owners Thread***

So I started playing around overclocking today.

1207 bios
i7 970
Corsair 8-9-8-24 6gb kit
Everything was set to xmp profile/default/auto.

Did a simple switch to 21•200 and system seems completely stable. Running longer prime 95 now.

One question I has was for real world day to day usage, is going any higher net me any significant gains?

I eventually want to see how high I can push this but it's also my mission critical work comp. So I can only really play with it in the weekends.

4-4.3 range seems to be the best range... though for them 970's and 990's it seems you can pull off 4.4-4.5 daily pretty easily. it takes me 1.4375 vcore just to run 4.3ghz daily and even that's pushin it in my opinion but i have a 980.

I also took my board up to 217bclk without slow mode yesterday, but that needs more work too...

I still am wondering how to fix the >9gb problem with linx that tanks my Gflops...

Also, can I suggest that people use thumbnails on the forum instead of posting full width pictures? It makes the forum so annoying to read!!!

seems with the speeds you're going for, you're going to need increase QPI voltage. if you're still posting with all 12 gigs at startup with 1.65v with that speed and cas then it's not DRAM voltage you need, but more QPI or (VTT) and higher uncore to get it stable. also, you'll need to play with the RTL's and tRL's 1 knotch at a time to get it just right. it takes fffffoooooorrrrrrr eeeeevvvvveeeeerrrr :hm: i've been trying endlessly to get 2000mhz stable just to have higher uncore and that's been more than just a pain.

You need to follow the thread more closely. This is the third time you're posting and I've had to say that to you. Clearly in my screenshot you can see I'm using only 6GB of my 18GB right now. Not to mention, I stated above the thumbnail '6gb 2.1ghz'.

I never have Gflop problems under 9GB memory in use(so if I have all 18GB in, but specify it to use 9gb ram, I get full GFlops). Since you don't have enough ram, You can't even test to see if you're having the problem or not.

I also can't get my uncore past 3.8GHz, and I normally run it at 3.6GHz. I stated this in one of my posts that you replied to incorrectly previously.

I don't intend to sound mean with this. I'm very irritated with you for offering advice multiple times that has nothing to do with the problems I have. I read your posts and it makes me feel like this: :brick::cussing::wth:

could someone add the upgrade intel sata bios version 10.1.0.1008 in 1005, have a temperature problem where the bios 1005 is the one that solves my problem!

Even in 1208 you have the problem? I had the temp problem with 1102, but it is fixed in 1207 and 0003 for me.

Yea tRFC is on AUTO. If I set it manually it's like you said, 90 then 100.

Also I agree I have not seen any Intel documentation proving that theory. But people seem to follow that rule as if it's fact. I read on another forum where someone (I think Raja) may have explained how the current distribution works between the vQpi and Vdimm rails. I remember after reading though that I decided the rule was legit.

I have this problem of temperature with any version later than 1005, the sensor is very slow and also there is an increase of + or - 10 ° C. The asus has never managed to solve this problem for me here!

Whoa now I only offered advice this last post as a guess at what might help. Don't take it to heart. Its just that the speeds you're trying to hit are pretty high. This last time was more of an agreement to the difficulty. I use 12gb of mem with 6 sticks my self and its VERY difficult to get it linx stable, specially with high uncore.

The only real advice I can give is stick with the stock base clock and your mems ratted speed at first and then increase bclk up to where you need it for those speeds you're going for and see what the qpi data link rate is at after starting at 6400. That'll give you a good idea as to what uncore you can use as higher uncore requires higher data link which requires higher qpi voltage. That's all I was getting at... its stupid hard to be linx stable with 12 plus gb mem stable at high speeds with high uncore. Other than that I can only say try swaping mem stick to different dimm slots to see if there's any change for the best regardless of how much mem you use. Just know that having two different sized sticks per chan could cause other uneeded problems due to every otherring stick of ram being double the size which requires double the effert to clock compared to the smaller stick in the same channel.

I'm not tryin to frustrate you, most of what I may have hinted at is only coming from my own frustration trying to do the same thing as you. I do follow your posts and do see what you're doing but I also see your difficulty, most of what'd I had said is only in retrosprect to what you are having problems with. Hell with 6gb of mem on mine I STILL can't get higher then 1900 mem speed. Any higher than about 1940, sticks start droping out regardless of what voltages I use or high much I adjust any timings at all. 12gb and higher is really difficult in general period... and I feel your pain >.<

EDIT: also I do read sig a lot and asume system hardware from that ahead of time of whic I am sorry if I confused you going that route as your sig says system mem of 12gb. Just know those higher uncores are a pain and its more to do with the cpu imc rather than motherboard. And I will say that I don't notice much increase of performance past 3400 uncore. After that its more pure cpu power over anything else that's sanely obtainable.

Again your post is off the mark as clearly I've already stabilized 2.1ghz and blown way past 200BCLK without slow mode.

Clearly I understand what the uncore limit of my cpu is since I already noted that mine doesn't do better than 3.8, and I usually run it at 3.6...

Also, I don't have stability problems with 12 or 18gb. I just have linx gflop problems if I tell it to allocate more than 9gb ram. Again, this is the third time I'm mentioning that to you.

I feel like I'm :horse: at this point when it comes to you.

and you're missing what i'm trying to get across as i meant earlier that your higher speeds would be difficult to stabilize with the higher amount of memory IE your 18gigs. the lower gflops with 9+gigs shows that there's an instability somewhere otherwise your cpu should be platuing at a certain point and keeping that rate as you go higher in tested mem. you shouldn't be loosing gflops...

so i just wont help you with MY particular experience in trying to get that issue fixed. your speeds your stable at are with your 6gigs installed, not your 18... and i know that. i was trying to help you with your 18 but it's whatever. sorry for trying to help you get higher gflops... done with you.

Does anyone know what the changes are in 1208 yet?

Also, I am having a OCZ Vertex 3 delivered on Monday, and was wondering what are peoples' advice on ports/drivers to use (I know the Marvell controller is rubbish that's why I'm asking).

The bios is supposed to be up on the downloads today! The 10th of April...

I also installed the 1208 bios, its working fine though I'm not sure what the difference is, but I'm using Raid and it says it does something for raid :p

whats is the p/n of your 12gb ram, is it 998953?
find out if others have same problem as you, if not i'd rma.
if the problem is <9GB then i'd run stock timings @ 10-10-10-27 and see if the problem is there.
if it is still low GFlops, then i'd rma the 12GB now that you have a 6gb set which is stable.

Yeah, it's 998953.
I've tried running all the stock timings, including running the cpu at as close to stock as possible(24x143)...

The whole thing is I feel like before I can RMA the 12GB kit, I need to get another 12GB kit to verify that it's in fact the kit and not the board or cpu... or get another cpu and verify the reverse...

The 12GB kit performs just as well as the 6GB kit for any capacity 9GB or lower(I don't know exactly where the problem occurs, 9216 is fine, 10240 is not). So the fact that the 6GB is stable doesn't really prove much... :(

I'm going to try each stick individually in each socket and see what happens... Might be able to expose a problem with one of the sticks that way... But that's for tomorrow or tuesday night.

Mounted my noctua nh-d14 on my Asus R3E a few days ago.
It was a tight fit, but it worked fine after removing 2 headspreaders on my Corsair memory.
I also moved one fan a littlebit higher up.

all water is now gone from my system. I've had GFX, Chipset and CPU cooling in the past 6 years, but now it's air again!

So i bet the Noctua is cooling better than the Reserator 1 did.

I get where you're coming from. I also recently upgraded to water cooling and sometimes wish I was still on air. But since I made the switch already I'm learning to live with it :). So far so good *knock on wood*

it's apparently just the same as 1207... difference is, is that it's got the same build date of 0003 but 1208 still doesn't have tRL controls.

Just as a friendly suggestion I would say you try the 'pea drop' or 'rice grain' method when applying thermal paste. And use Shin-Etsu X23-7783D for paste. I always get great results.

Hm yes i know...
I just the noctua nt-h1 that came with the headsink.
I also use my finger inside a plastic bag to move the goop around, so when im done, some of it is still on the plastic bag.

I looked at some TomsHardware videos before, they just pooped out some thermal paste and slapped the cooler on the cpu and that was it...

Called a friend whose computer I built last year. He's got an i7 950 on a Gigabyte x58a-ud3r. I'm gonna swing by his place this weekend to test my 12gb kit on his hardware.
If it works fine, well, the kit is obviously fine and I've gotta troubleshoot the CPU/Motherboard...
I'm really hoping it's not the cpu since I no longer have a spare sitting around...

There's 3 triple kits there (9 sticks). I am in the process of binning now, will make 3 as close to matched as I can get triads.

EDIT - DMM readings incorrect, battery was dying. I apologize for the insinuation that it was intentional to get better ram clocks for review purposes. Erroneous readings removed.

Also been doing some memory testing. Put the best 3 (at CL6) sticks together out of the 9 I'm testing and using 1.61v did some stability testing. They may go further, DDR3-1732 errored after 30% or so.

Were these voltages measured under full multi-threaded load?

If not run Hyper Pi 32M for VTT and VDIMM - this will put a heavy load on the IMC AND the DIMMs.

Measuring VDimm at the slot you will find some drift from one side of the power plane to the other because of resistive losses, hence various VDD pins across each slot will have higher or lower voltage.

Well one kit will, the other is giving errors very early (4% in) at DDR3-1704 MHz 6-6-6-18 @ 1.65v. It does better at CL8, seems to hate CL6 and CL7. Second kit is much better but one stick not as good as other 2, so I have put the 2 best sticks of the kits I bought with the best stick of my kit and thats what I was using to do that test and the HCI Memtest run.

Just had a look at my old table. 1.65V set gave me 1.645V at one of the central VDD pins on the slot closest to the CPU. This was on one of the earlier BIOSes though.

Neither kit that I got will run at Cas 8, but all 24 Gb does 9-8-8-20-100-1T @ 1600 Mhz and 1.5v. They wont do any better with voltage increase at all.

Completely overkill, and my geil modules did Cas 6 up to 1700 Mhz, but I couldnt refuse getting these 12 Gb kits at £119 each. I'm going to wait for the current G Skill 2133 Mhz kits priced at £50 to disappear or go up in price before selling my Geils though.

last i remember, something to do with LinX not utilizing HT properly and the work load being more efficient with HT turned off across all cores. i get the same thing, roughly mid 70's with HT on and about 95-100 with it off.

Real temp seems pretty reliable, Ive been using it for a while now,
As far as temps, the bios default for overheat is 90 so for safety I reduce that to 80, Ive seen ppl with a 4ghz o/c around the 70s with that cooler so aim to get around that under load.

I just got my 930 up to 4.5. I have the volts at 1.41 it's the lowest I could go to keep it stable. My temps after full load for 3 hours or so get to 77c . What you guys think? back it off a little or rock on?

They dont work very well with my i7 970 (GT) neither:down:.
with 2gb it can go 70Gflops in linx but <3gb and its like hitting a wall @ 54Gflops.

according to intel 100c is top rated temp, 95 being your -grind teeth in fear- and 98 being -stop-. mid 80's to low 90's is about your safest HIGHEST possible temp... just don't push it if you don't feel comfertable.

This is taken with an L series. How's it compare for sharpness? If the point at which focus is achieved is not in the sharpest focus when you review the photo, have you tested to see if your lens is front or back focusing and adjusted for this if so?

Just did some 12GB testing - I feel your pain its insanely hard to do.
Low gflops when all ram is selected. Think its most likely just the LinX software is unable to work properly rather than actual hardware issues.

I was using a Canon 100mm L f2.8 IS Macro lens.

This weekend I'm going to a friend's house who has a r3e, and has an i7 950. I'm taking my memory with me and we will test the GFlop issue with the same memory on same model motherboard, but with a different cpu.

I was also wondering if it was Linx causing the problem, but others don't seem to have the issue...

You seem to be saying you have a single 6GB kit that when used alone is coinciding with low GFLOPS.

In all honesty I dont care what LinX says, it isnt coded the best and has always had problems with hexacore, also HT, now this weird lower GFLOPS issue some are seeing when using 12GB. I am almost 100% certain its just buggy software, and proper apps can and do make use of 12GB when its installed. Im only focused on real world performance I just use some synthetic tests to verify stability under high stress.

Verify your bandwidth with AIDA64 or everest, do some SPI32M runs, some Prime and some LinX (no matter how poorly the latter works) and you'll notice everything is fine except LinX. That doesnt indicate a problem with hardware - just that program. My bandwidth is good with 12GB, and everything else runs beautifully.

yes, its a single 6gb kit (3x 2gb).
i dont really want to test them again, i feel that the problem is in the memory itself, somehow its developing a bottleneck when moving data.

on my 6GB kit, the RTL are set very, very tight, dont know if maybe loosing them up may help isolate the problem.

sighs...i hate testing 12GB cause of the waiting time.

My 6gb kit works fine with my Gulftown, the 12GB kit works fine up until 9gb or so. I haven't done any synthetics to see if my bandwidth is fine... If the results arn't conclusive I'll pop my chip and take it to my friend's place to test on his board(at least I'm pretty sure he'd allow me).

The reason why I'm concerned about this is several people are not having the problem with 12GB! I agree it might be a software issue, but we can't be sure since some people don't have the problem...

i have no problems with kit of Patriot 12GB 3x 4gb 2000mhz @ 1.5x Uncore.

i told ya man, don't mean to ride back on rough waters, but i did mention this a while ago... as i followed. the HT seems to be either -1- overloading the ICM with the extra threads going at those speeds or -2- something to do with LinX not running all 12 threads properly which has been prooven with results shown between HT on and HT off situations.

on another note...

seems i've finally prooven the whole "intel uses bad sensors" theory that i've read else where and also i my self posted here earlier. people should just probably stop doing the cake technique for applying their thermal compound...
redid my thermal compound with the X pattern, smooshed it down and torqued down my water block bolts down pretty tight this time around... thankfully it seems Koolance's compression fittings, the outter tube part of the fitting was the perfect tool to ensure perfect equal torque all around based on it's highth (made it so the springs holding the water block down all go to the same compression length for equal pressure).

anyway... after all this, all temps are just about dead even with only 2-3*c varience. i suggest doing the same for anything else having the same issues as i noticed.

i also swaped all my mem chips around to see if i could get lucky with better full mem stability. running at 1866 CL9 (9-9-9-24-110) and 2x uncore at 3733 with CPU at stock 3.33ghz and i just ran 10 rounds full mem (11,200 out of total 12gb) and did 75gflops average and stable. i'm gonna try bumping it further to 2000 mem and 4000 uncore and see if it'll break 80gflops. also, VTT is now stable at 1.36 now down from 1.41 and mem voltage at 1.68 down from 1.7. i previously thought swapping mem sticks around really didn't show much improovement most of the time and didn't think to do so much until now and it's seemed to pay off.

so i still can't get 2000mhz to go on my mem... channel B drops alot and i can never get more than 8gigs to show and this is the same results i encountered before swapping my mem around... so i'm thinkin it's coming back to my MOBO again being the main issue and my IOH just not being the greatest or something. i've gotten upto 1970... after that channel B it's self drops 50% of the time and i've tried all sorts of timings, voltages, reference voltages, data links and so on... just doesn't want to do it and it's always channel B droping every time.

BUT! right now, sitting at 4.64ghz (136x34) with 1909 on mem and uncore at 2x (3822). vcore at 1.46875v, VTT at 1.375, Dram at 1.6695v, IOH at 1.166v. passed 5 rounds with 8gigs in LinX at 103gflops and 77-78*c average core temps. i'll throw it on full mem tomorrow for full stability but for now it's well within 24/7 temp ranges for my system.

Yeah, it's not very good, but it gets there! I only needed 1.35v QPI for 4.5GHz(180bclk 3.6ghz uncore)

You are right into photography right? Why not get yourself a hexcore, its cut down my processing time a lot when converting raw to jpeg for example.

SB is a mid range platform and I just personally dont like it, give me proven X58 + hexcore power any day.

You could pickup a nice 970 pretty cheap and 4.2 should be a walk in the park for it, and with 2 extra physical cores it will increase the power of your rig. SB and 4.5GHz+ is for people who game etc and want high FPS. I wasnt 4-4.5GHz and raw power without blasting my chip with vcore and degrading it in 6 months like all the guys with SB are doing. I'm sick of all the hey look 5GHz threads, seriously if I wanted to abuse my 990X as much as they are abusing their cpu's I could get damn close if not nail 5GHz but with 6c/12t.

I work for hours editing and converting, I need reliability and power without abusing it, and if have the same goal, hexcore + X58 is the way to go until perhaps IVY but I wont be upgrading till I need to.
