Truehighroller, you got a link to your settings mate? Did have the ones for the 3.6 Ghz written down somewhere, but I've lost the paper. Cheers.

There you go hope it helps yeah.
I have turned every rock possible with this issue and everything seems to point towards it being cpu related. I could have proved this but, I lapped my shiznit because it was / maybe still is, such a good chip and now I can't swap it for another at Micro Center.... I wish some one here lived close to me to because that would be another way to prove or disprove it.
Do you know why they added the CPU Margin Enhancement?
Intel told them they should.... because it helps overclocking on some lower end CPUs "supposebly". I have never received a here is the reason from any of my contacts as of yet that was based on them getting the info from internally I will add though, that the tech I spoke with when this thing first started unfolding for me said he found what Leo said on some post on the internet / set to optimized gets you more fsb.
I quite honestly don't know what will be the cure. I doubt they will get rid of the setting itself, and therefore I don't know if there will be a permanent solution.
Overclocking was never an issue. I was running 3.8Ghz (475 X 8) easy from my very initial attempts - rock solid stable - 24/7. I never, ever thought that the at-the-time insignificant Shut Down issue would evolve to the monstrous bug our chips seems to have been dampened with.
Yep I was running at the same setting on the 1102 as I wasn't able to pull off my 480 x 8 setting that I can now yet. I am deeply sadened by the whole thing. Ket said we should all jump on the band wagon and harass them until they take the option out. :yepp: I just shot an email to both the boss and the engineer.. asking for update.......
Is 1406 still beta? I need to try a different bios because this cold boot issue is getting on my nerves!
I just got rid of that odd double post problem with my board. All I did was clear cmos, load defaults, flash (with the same bios file), and clear cmos again. Now I dont have that odd double post everytime that I change settings in bios. I was a little worried about that.
BTW, this sucks I was really thinking about picking up a q9450.
I never received an email or a call...
http://i308.photobucket.com/albums/k...9h29-VCore.png
Should I be worried here? All of my monitering programs are all over the place. I cant figure it out.
http://i308.photobucket.com/albums/k...J/Corev204.jpg
I see this type of stuff in cpuz too, ocassionally. I just ran prime for 12 and a half hours stable. There were dips and spikes like that on the 3.3v graph and the 12v graph, just not as many.
No problem. It's good to know what the 'official' limits are when overclocking anyway. Sounds like you are in good shape. From now on, these datasheets will be the first things I read before attempting to OC on a new chip. I was holding back on upping the Vtt because I had read somewhere that it was 1.15v for the Q9000...but when I read the datasheet, I realized that max only applied to the 3 series chipsets...not the 4 series like the PQ5's. So, I took your advice and upped the Vtt 2 notches to 1.18. Since I did that, I have had no failed posts and was able to prime 12 hours while reducing my DIMM volts a full 1v...sweet deal.
As far as the significant difference in max Vtt between the 3 and 4 series...I can only guess, but I suspect that the ICH10 NB was more than a simple die-shrink...I'm totally guessing here, but I think the ICH10 has much tighter control of voltages, so it allows a higher Vtt without risking excessive transient excursions of Vtt...just a guess though...
[EDIT] Nope, you folks are right...I didn't reduce Vdimm by 1v...more like .1v...still pretty good, eh?[/EDIT]
friggg, now mine will not shut down properly, shuts down, and tries to turn back on like a restart - have to load settings again as it flags overclock failed when I catch it and power off at the psu
on 803 with q9450 and everything else running normally. Not changed anything in bios to trigger this.
Sigh, will monitor and update on the thread
Okay sooo been reading the last few pages and it sounds like peoples boards are crapping out on them/ having issues. Do you guys just think this is a BIOS thing or are they dieing?
Well I'm guessing this is the best overclock I'm going to get with this board :(. I was hoping for a bit more but I guess it's better than a kick in the teeth :).

Alright, so I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Vista. System running rock solid stable without interruption at BIOS 0803 ..
... but ...
Shut Down Woes Persist!!!
This is NUTS!!!! I'm on 0803 and reinstalled OS. So it's neither BIOS, nor Software. The only thing I can think of something interrupting from the Hardware. I'll take it apart and put it back together - but this is still NUTS!! The problem started randomly - not after any upgrade/change/modification - just one fine day.
The only other nightmare I can think of is a permanent damage to my Chip or something from the whole CPU Margin Enhancement scandal.
I don't know. This is ballistic. Can't get rid of the damn Shut Down woes.
:horse:
 Beat that horse damn it beat it... I am curious about your power supply have you tested it? Also maybe your MB is really :banana::banana::banana:ting out on you here. My guess is though that when you get the new one back you will still not be able to use > 0803.
I'm going to investigate the hardware next. Take everything out and start by one thing at a time - test out shut down - and continue. That'll single out everything else.
If the shut down problem still persist, I'll consider RMA'ing the board.
I have to say this really sucks though.
PS: I'm imagining you haven't heard anything from ASUS yet.
This is what has been said as of just now,

Hmmm... so they don't seem to be able to replicate the problem on their end, are they! If they're not experiencing the problem we are, I think it will come to a full RMA circle... I don't think they will be able to issue a resolution as such if they don't have the problem at hand.
So what's your next step ... what are you planning to do?
I'm considering RMA'ing the board ... but I'll have to go through ASUS ... Newegg's warranty is far gone.
I am going to go through him for my second RMA. If this doesn't resolve the issue then I will get them to replace my CPU. They replicated the issue but, they are saying that the new BIOS solved the issue. Maybe it resolved what leads to our issue and that is why it solved it for them but, we are to late for rescue here as the damage is already done.
I guess the problem is that we're not sure if the damage is being done to the Motherboard or CPU. In a way, your RMA will find that out.
When you say "the new BIOS solved the issue" for them, are you referring to 1403? Strangely, I was fine all the way up to 1402 ... my problems actually started while I was on 1403.
I just wrote in to ASUS Technical Inquiry as well. Let me see what they have to say.
hmm, weird thing happened to my p5q deluxe. It was idling for a few hours when I noticed that all the fans spinned up (even though I put them on "silent" in bios) and speedfan reported cpu temperature around 115c! At the same time, core temps were quite normal, 38-35c, which is usual for idle (I've got stuck sensors). This is weird, because I don't see why it would happen, I was not overclocking at the time, all settings were auto, computer wasn't doing anything except downloading a single file at mere 20-30k/s. I've shut down the computer, and when I turned it on again a few minutes later, the bios got reset as if I was doing some changes or oc'ing. I'm running e8500 with 4x1gb of memory (auto 800mhz speed), 5 hdds, pci-e X-Fi, TV-tuner, HX620 PSU, and GTX280, all on stock, when this happens... oh, and bios is 1201 ket-modded... I've restored all the settings, running again normally but I'm afraid that this will happen again. Anyone has any ideas to why this would happen? Computer is stable, I've finished assembling it a couple of weeks, did some oc'ing (4ghz at 1.25v, not much more), but I never experienced anything like this... what's going on here, I've got no idea
This is my second RMA. Not only have I already RMAED before but also with this board they replaced my BIOS chips. The first time I plugged this board in it was doing the same thing as the one I RMAED. I know this is not going to solve my issue but, they don't want to listen so, we will do this the hard way.
Try to put some volts manual mate , NB might require a bit more volts for 4 dimm operation
For Lucifer and Truehighroller
I think you will get both an RMA board, but getting a new cpu, never... get real guys... there are so many Q9450 and 9550's out there that are overclocked and most run fine with your hated setting on "performance"...
C'mon, pushing 480FSB daily could damage the CPU and or mobo... Is that now the mobo's fault ?... Some things go down slowly other stuff just brakes... you are overclocking and you take the risk...
I find this is getting out of proportion big time as it's all Asus' fault now... we had similar stuff with the degrading CPU thread... everyone's cpu was dying suddenly, yet it only required "for most" a small bump in Vcore to stabilize again, others had crappy PSU's, mobo with LLC issues, some had ram going bad etc...
If I was you guys I would make a seperate thread on your issue... and see what gives... I hope you get your issues fixed but I hardly believe Asus will do nothing more than just swap the mobo's
I'm not going to say what I want to say.
Ehh, Say what you want too, this is a "Forum". Peoples thoughts and input is what brings these sort of problems to the community.
Your input as to this "Cpu Optimization setting" I believe has gotten quite a few of us to think about what our OC problems are with this board. I thank you for that. I also believe that the discussion about it is Not a Rant, but exactly that, a "Discussion" about the issue you and another and possibly myself have with this board.
I don't believe a new thread should be started about it,IMHO, but then, thats just me :)
Larry
Even KET has noted that the damn option causes issues and he is modding the BIOSes and making them clock better for people. I had this issue right away with a brand new MB from Asus with out me overclocking at all, kill that it's your fault crap... I have been nothing but, good to this chip and it is a beast when it comes to over clocking and still is.. How the hell is it the chip.... New board out of the box, how the hell is it a brand new board that has not been pushed at all just giving in. I can push this board still just fine on 0803 and yet it is the board or it is the CPU. Where is your logic behind these claims?
maybe so, maybe not. Leeghoofd (thx for the tip, btw) got a point though - true/LUCI5R discussion is hijacking the thread, and even though they do discuss relevant issues, it's getting a little out of hand. It's a matter of perception, only mods can make a decision in this regard.
I have helped people here as well.. alot. I'm done with this convo, sorry.
Edit: I just talked to my contact and he said if it comes down to the CPU being damaged then they will replace it seeing as it is obvious that the option caused the damage.
Sorry but...which bios is the best for a Q6600?
This is the ASUS P5Q Deluxe Discussion thread, as far as I can recall. I'm having a Shut Down issue with this motherboard. I'm having a 'can't boot into Vista with a BIOS > 0803' issue with this motherboard ... all relating to a Setting in the BIOS for THIS very motherboard. Trust me I can hang around all day & night and argue how valid this discussion is pertaining to this thread. Separate thread?!? Nuts?!?
'for the sake of decency & sanity, it appears obviously you people are getting annoyed with our discussions on the current 'obvious' problem underlying somewhere with or near this motherboard (In acquaintance with Q9450's), and thus as with true, I'm also done with this over here.
Out.
Regarding disabling LLC; Causes my rig to BSOD within a few minutes of starting IBT 10 pass. Enabling it, fixes this. So in my opinion best keep it enabled
Look guys I don't want to chase noone away, but this thread is getting very very large and the latest pages have been concerning your issues... not telling us anything new, even to me it seemed that True's contact completely misunderstood the situation : as he thought it was more a bios corruption issue and wasn't even aware True was referring to his CPU being damaged... and Lucifer are you going to tell us a zillion times you have the shutdown issue... plz do domething about it, take action , mailing will not help you, as most technical support staff don't even own a power computer,..., swap hardware try stuff and report back...
It would be easier for peeps with the same issue to share stuff as most will not go through a 162 page thread to find an answer... you guys look at my suggestion totally the wrong way... these threads hold great info but due to the enormous amounts of posts it's very very hard to find... I wished a moderator gave me the power to edit Big Joe's first post to add some of the info, tips and issues...
So Timothy look at your reply if the board and CPU work fine with 0803 , is your CPU damaged then ? NOPE your boards bios > 0803 messes up some routine or code which leads to instability... we had this with the Striker board where a firmware for the Nvidiot chipset was updated and brought many 65nm quad OC's to it's knees... reflashing to an earlier bios there didn't even help for some of us back then...
Lucifer have you popped the Cmos battery for some hours ? My Formula board had a bad flash and always rebooted after a succesfull windows shutdown otherwise it just hung at the windows shutdown screen... I see in ya videos there's still optimized in the cpu enhancement ... have you tried performance ? and plz man do a cmos reset after a flash...
You guys are way too angry with the current situation and take some posts (mainly mine) as a personal attack : which they are not !!! But take into consideration when you push hardware some things can break and that's the risk we all take... nothing lasts forever... also the Golden rule if it ain't broke don't fix it rule is always valid.... if 0803 works fine stick with it till the Bios department finds a cure or just removes it (can't Ket remove it ?)
Without LLC you might need about 0.08 more Vcore set in bios...
http://i308.photobucket.com/albums/k...9h23-VCore.png
I ran OCCT for a little over a half hour with another psu and got those spikes in voltage again. Could it be that Asus adware from the cd that I instaled (I think I uninstaled most of it). Should I try a format or flash to another bios? Should I even worry about it?
Nothing earth shattering but w 1403 I got down another Volt to 1.2 and am @ PL7 down from 8. I like this speed I get to keep things nice and quiet, I'll get much more I'm sure but...This is a good 24/7. I'll see about topping out later, now if I could just get the voltages to step like they do when I'm @ stock auto.
I can do 4 with all the C1E and speed step enabled, but Auto voltage is way to high and when I set the voltage it stays there regardless if I'm running @ 4Ghz or it steps down to the X6 speed of 2.4 Ghz.
http://mscopp.zenfolio.com/img/v3/p786476523-5.jpg
You sure you can trust sensor readings from the P5Q-D? Nah, seriously... I've had spikes on my vcore as well.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1223/gr3y7347en4.png
his is vcore. yours is temp readout
The spikes in temperature are probably due to uneven load rather than voltage spikes.
heres mine.i have load line enabled. http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...1h33-VCore.png
I have load-line disabled. Because I was worried about voltage spikes, LOL. Im getting these spikes with 2 differetnt psu's. I see these spikes in the 3.3v and 12v graph. I dont even know if I should trust this. The voltage readings on my p7n were all over the place too, but nothing like this with the vcore. Ive seen cpuz say 2.1v with this board on the vcore. That would have fried my chip right away, Look at the first pic I took of occt running, its crazy.
You'd perhaps be more sympathetic if you were an Q9450 owner
I've also experienced the same problems after trying and briefly using higher bioses than 803. Note that its only an 3.6 overclock, not more, hardly bleeding edge stressing components
I think this is the ideal place to share information on this subject.
After all once you set your system up, whatdaya going to do, fark with ram timings for ever more? this is a genuine issue (as witness by different users) and its not exactly work to read the thread - its nice to have new material relating to the board
the combined replacement cost of the cpu and board is only ~$500, so I wouldn't dismiss it as a petition for new hardware
personally I follow this thread to see if the problems have solutions
ie new bios that I can use with my CPU and fix for the restart on power down
Another point is Luci5r drove the overclocking of the q9450 on this board when the board was first released : work that enabled many (like me)to simply use the template to get up and going while new to the subject, surely that huge positive contribution books time to discuss a board/cpu problem
and what if the time truehigh has done results in cpu swaps, that is beneficial to the community whom have the cpu/board combination
*the worry here is that
1 we are stuck with 803 bios for ever more and
2 the same settings on 803 will stop working - eg the non shutdown problem, which personally just started happening this week on mine
I think its valid discussion, and I think if you had the same cpu you would too.
Q9450 is end of line but Q9550 is popular so there possibility of this becoming more common
what is the average fsb that I should expect on air with a dual core?
how about with a quad core?
how worse would the crossfire performance be compared to a x48 motherboard (like rampage formula) using 2 4850s on 1920*1200 res?
does the 16-phase on the p5q deluxe really help for a higher cpu overclock?
1 dono for dual, 475 for quad=3.6
2 ~5-6% http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=761&p=8
If you've not bought them yet, for that resolution the 4870s are arguably worth the extra. Worth considering an 4870x2 also
3 yes, its reported to be better than pro
Why i can't find 1403 BIOS on any ASUS FTP!? One is just dead (but used to work) and other two only have old versions. What gives?
500FSB is doable on duallies, 450-480 for quads... I think you are more cpu speed limited to around 4-4.5 (wolfdale ) around 3.6-3.8Ghz for quads all depending on CPU, ambient temps and cooler used...
Crossfire performance on that resolution will not be much lower at that resolution... there have been some tests on the matter with very wicked results : some were a total rape others were just a matter of a few percentages
Regarding the phase question : it should be no, but the 16 phase will have an easier time to maintain it, surely with a quad... Also I have had several E boards and there something wrong with some of them : LLC and co leads to instability... I prefer the Dlx board all the way...
P5Q-ASUS-DELUXE-1403.ZIP
For all you Q9450 users plz report in the 9450 woes collective thread plz : link here : other Q9300/9400/9550 and 9650 users can also dig in...

Where do you get latest BIOSes? They used to be on their FTP but not anymore it appears...

Newegg - Asus P5Q-E - User Reviews
Quote:
I updated my BIOS to 1306(latest bios as of 9/16/08). My computer took 37 seconds exactly from the time I hit the power button to until the BiOS screen pulled up, where you hit DEL to enter the BiOS. I then called Asus tech support. After waiting on hold for 45 minutes(yes, i timed it) the tech support helper guy told me I had to download a 450MB update for the Express Gate system that is included with this motherboard. Even this would be fine and the motherboard would have received a 4-star rating from me, but then it happened. I have 20mbit download with Verizon FiOS. Asus has a 56k modem that they're using to upload these updates to us on. The updates were downloading at 4KB/s from both China and Global. Continued in Other thoughts...

BSOD stop errors on a regular basis. Difficult to install Windows XP because of stability issues. Setup crashes when trying to load to RAID volume which is a known issue that Asus cannot apparently resolve. Random freezing of OS regardless of BIOS version and memory type used. I cannot believe Asus let this model out into the retail market. This is the worst experience I've had with an Asus Mobo ever!
Quote:
ASUS technical support is nonexistant. If you have a choice between an ASUS board and any other board, get the other board.

Even after days of work, this board was a nightmare. I have never had an ASUS product be this difficult or this poorly designed. I am truly upset by the quality of this board and have returned it to Newegg.

Board had intermittent blue screen issues. Checked everything and after replacing the board with a ASUS Rampage Formula, I had no issues.

As has been noted previously, with Q9550 proc I had to flash to older 0803 bios (had 1201) to get it to work. I had random BSOD's whenever I tried to play a game or play a movie with 1201 BIOS. 0803 seems to have done the trick
Quote:
It took me about 10 attempts to install Vista64 without locking up. Oh, and WHY do any utilities these days insist on seeing a 1.44MB floppy??? Finally got Vista installed...but was getting random lockups causing a hard reboot. Bios shipped was v1201. If it wasn't for the reviews here...I flashed bios 0803 and so far things seems stable. If it lockes up again...its RMA baby...no more Asus for me. This is my 2nd Asus mobo in about 5-6 years. The last one shipped with a dead coin cell battery, and wouldn't let me into the BIOS.
Quote:
I nearly RMA'd this mobo as I could not get it run consistently with my processor. It would crash every 30 minutes or whenever I would try to run a game or benchmark. Tested all my parts with another mobo and they were fine. I tried the latest BIOS (1306) and got no improvement. After doing some research, I rolled the BIOS back to version 0803. It works great now.

Wouldn't run my DDR2-1000 G-Skill memory at 1000mhz without crashing. It would run with Crucial DDR2-1066@1066Mhz and the G-Skill ram worked in my other rig just fine. Seems there is compatibility issues with G-Skill and Asus.

There is a lack of stable bios' for this mobo. Also I have trouble overclocking my processor but I think that is because of my memory. I bought an Artic Freezer 7 and it actually moves the side vent over a little because the area around the cpu is closely packed.

BIOS needs an immeidate update. I can't get expressgate to work on mine for some reason, and on one boot the totally stock BIOS just dumped out and it had to recIver itself from the backup...wierd

Bios is a bit of an issue. One, you will need to update it in order for it to support all 8 gigs or so of ram. My recomendation is installing 1 gig of ram when you turn it on or install an OS, and then downloaded the latest BIOS, otherwise it wont even post. It also has an issue where it measures the CPU temperature wrong, the latest bios update fixes this as well.

Through my experiences with this mobo I've noticed that it struggles with higher fsb on higher mult (compared with other boards) I have exhausted all the bios voltages and settings to run anything higher the 9.5 x 425 stable. However, it is possible to run stable with a lower multiplier something higher then 4.1Ghz which means this is a great lower mult overclocker (also means the 9.5 mult I spent my money on got me nowhere higher then say a e8300 because I found the most stable for highest ghz to be 8.5 mult)

Anyone planning to purchase this mobo with a Yorkfield processor Q9xxx or above should seriously consider purchasing another non-ASUS motherboard. The main issue is the BIOS support. The default BIOS version (v1103) cause BSOD and will never pass Prime95. I had to DOWNGRADE to v0803 in order to not crash. Unfortunately, 0803 is not compatible with my GSKILL RAM that I purchased. So now I am using an older pair of 1GB DDR2 800 that I have. Just take a look at the ASUS forums for this mobo at all of the problems and lack of support. BEWARE!

This is the biggest piece of garbage Ive ever bought. After years of AMD I decided to go back to Intel and Im sorry I did. I cannot anything on this motherboard to work. Ive reinstalled windows XP Pro more times then I can count. The on board sound is not recognized by its on driver disk and it will not work with my soundblaster audigy card. The driver disk that came with the board just hangs when trying to install all the drivers. Asus tech support is non existent. Tried their live chat only to get a message that its unavailable after waiting 20 minutes. Tried calling them and I was told to leave my name and hopefully someone would call me back. When I try to install my video card drivers the systems just hangs. I have a $1000 paper weight at this point. Save your money and headaches. STAY AWAY FROM ASUS.

-AUTO voltage settings over volt components to dangerous levels.
- Most manual voltage settings overvolt to a significant degree.
- Massive CPU vdroop unless LLC is enabled.
- HORRIBLE tRD (aka Performance Level) options, especially with the 1:1 ratio.
- Very fragile chipset. Cannot tolerate settings that are safe according to the boards BIOS and manual.
- Push-pins used to secure NB cooler.
- Metal EPU plate blocks air flow to SB.
Other Thoughts: I was initialy very optimistic about this board, and my early testing supported such sentiments. However the board rapidly began demonstrating erratic behavior and instabilities that I eventually traced to the chipset.
I was using reasonable voltages (far less than what the AUTO stetting would have set) and very good cooling, yet withing 36 hours I could barely boot the board due to the chipset wearing out.
Perhaps my example was a dud, but the hassle it gave me was second to none. No other board I've used, and I have used a lot of very finiky boards, has managed to be be such an annoyance in such a short amount of time.

So I am on my second board since the first one just kept crashing on me… And even on this one I see no improvements what so ever over my old DFI P35… As a matter of fact I used to run my e8400 @ 4400 and now I can’t get this sucker stable at anything over 3800!!! I use a Prometeia to keep it cool, but since you have all them connectors near the cpu socket area it makes quite challenging to do it.

Could not get Windows XP to install. Tried three different XP disks - two different sets of memory - two different CD ROMS - two different hard drives. Each time the install would fail. Most of the time when trying to copy files from the CD to the hard drive. All drives were SATA. Other seem to be having this problem.

I've been battling with this board for sometime now. First, I had to upgrade my video card from a 8600gt to a ati 4850 in order to have video. There is limited to no PCI-E 1.1 support. Check around the net, other have had issues. RAM issues galore, tread careful on what brand of memory you have. The QVL list on ASUS' site doesn't help.

Setup was horrible, even after updating BIOS. The mobo has serious issues trying to boot with some USB devices plugged in. For me, it was my UPS battery. For others, it has been iPod or other USB mass storage. BIOS would freeze while initializing USB controllers during boot-up.
Over the years of building systems from 486DX33 up until now I have been growing weary of dealing with foreign motherboard manufacturers and my experience with the hardware made by Asus has luckily been good but I know that it can become like dental work when it comes to customer service, modem like 4KB/s download speeds from their Global and Chinese web sites, bad releases of crappy PC Probe software, and weird BIOS updates.Quote:
Ai doesnt have the best cutomer service. i waited on the phone for about 15 minutes only for someone to say that the lines were to busy to leave ur name a number and we'll get back to u. ai suite stopped working after bios update 1306 now i cant use those cool features. :-(
After going through problems with this current DFI motherboard that was supposed to be a king for overclockers only to get 0.3GHz 3D stable OC from 2.2 to 2.5GHz on server class AMD Opteron and then months later finding out about horrible performance and interference between the Silicon Image 3114 PCI based RAID and the Sound Blaster X-Fi I am all most out of patience of dealing with sub-par designs and support that have been getting worse and worse over the years. Not to mention all the unstable memory dying issues like the Crucial Ballistix fiasco from a year or two ago.
Now I'm looking towards upgrading my system to something better and it looks like the Q9400 with P45 and DDR2 is the price & performance answer that will lead to a 3x increase in performance and decrease in x264 encoding times by 3x.
However after reading the reviews left on Newegg, while most being written by noobs, they do leave me with a sense that there are some serious problems with the Asus PQ5-E and Deluxe versions.
So, I'm writing to you all that have these motherboards and went through the problems asking what should I expect from this type of an upgrade?

In my honest opinion stay away from the E version... I had several boards with Loadline calibration not working, which resulted in BSOD, not able to get into windows, random reboots at idle etc... also 2 of them had issues to clock over 450FSB... The Dlx's here run just fine with the Qx9650, Q6600 and Wolfdale CPU's
If the Q9400 is like the 9450 run the Dlx board with bios 0803... Though I'm not aware if the Q9400 also has issues that might be related to the CPU enhancement option of the bios... Depending on ya OC maybe the Q6600 is still a good option (if ya limit yaself to 34-3.6Ghz OC's) as it has more cache onboard (8mb vs 6mb), cheaper, but maybe not the instruction set you want to have... in any case if you OC them quads opt for a good cooler like the Thermalright Ultra 120 or eXtreme models...
For the rams I ran these gskill/mushkin kits from day one I had the board... no compatability issues at all , they run nicely at 1066 or 1081mhz according the selected FSB
Mushkin Redline PC8000 4GB
Gskill PC8000PQ 4GB kit
Good luck
Thank you MAC, and good job digging stuff up there Jack so there are other people out there with similar issues to mine and luci5r's and luci5r has verified officially that he does have the same issue as me now. I am calling management today and raising some hell...
Hi guys,
Going to order this board for next week with a SATA HD and DVD drive.e.g there will be no PATA \ IDE in this system I will build. I also don't have a floppy drive.
I'm wondering about installing Windows XP SP2 will cause me problems because there are no SATA drivers on the disc? Or is there?
I've read various different things from people .. some say you don't need the drivers and it will install fine. Some people say just select IDE as your hard drive and it will install, some say they are on a SP2 disc, etc. etc.
I'm confused and only ever built PATA | IDE systems.
Can anyone help me \ confirm if I will or won't run into problems, and if so how to overcome them.
Thanks, Danny.
Thanks Mac, appreciate your post. I've reiterated this ample times before, this matter is of pertinent importance. I can't possibly fathom a reason not to, quote, "raise hell", unquote, about this matter in THIS very thread ... despite resistance from any. Each & every single Motherboard "discussion" thread created here at XS follows each & every problem/difficulty encountered with said Motherboard. Yesterday it began to appear that mine & true's voices were getting lost in the shuffle, and somewhat being dampened. I'm glad there are other people coming out in support.
I must also commend JakFrost very graciously for his time & effort digging all those details. The problem with this board, Q9450 & the BIOS>0803, which basically points to the "CPU Margin Enhancement" setting - is inevitable, and cannot be ignored.
Most of us running kosher @ 0803 ... but above that, one by one the bricks are falling. Numbers are strengthening. True ... I'm with you all over. If it takes calling ASUS everyday, I will. This has to be answered, they cannot ignore this. I personally believe that both the ASUS P5Q Deluxe is an Excellent Motherboard, and the Q9450 is an AWESOME Chip ... there has to be a solution.
Cheers.
Picture is worth 1000 words,,

It should be noted its not just Quads that get the problems you guys have. When using a BIOS with CPU M-E, even my dualcore got affected. The system stopped shutting down properly (just hung on "Windows is shutting down"), and my system started to become unstable even with stock settings. Back with BIOS 703m, all is well again. Testing out a modded 901m atm.
A quirk with the modded 704 bios for the Deluxe is that occasionally the board won't let the RAM run at DDR2-1000 or more. Seems to happen after the machine is off for a while. Clearing the CMOS doesn't help. The fix seems to be to let the machie boot fully with the RAM below DDR2-1000, then restart. After that they'll OC normally.
This is EXACTLY what we've been talking about all along. So you got hold of a Q6600 and it booted up just fine with BIOS 1403 ... yet a Q9450 fails! This is good in a way, this is something solid & substantial in terms of evidence. I'm glad you made this effort!
I had it the whole time in my Fiance's machine that was built from my old parts. I just didn't feel like ripping it out but, you know why I did so that is between us there but here is something else for the hell of it,
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/6599/3600pb6.jpg
She has done 4.13Ghz :clap:. I don't know what she will do on this board but, that was on the p35 my fiance is using I had it in one of Giabytes overclocking contest.
So... what's the recommended bios now? 1403? I have a Q6600. And where do you download these beta bioses from?
P5Q-ASUS-DELUXE-1403.ZIP
Concerning the Q9450 and the CPU enhancement issue :Talked to my Asus contact : who wasn't aware of the issue at all. Sadly he doesn't have a q9450, will the Q9650 behave in the same manner ? Tested with the Qx9650 and that one does everything fine, yet I can only maintain stability with the current settings at optimized and compatability mode set. For performance I need more Vcore and NB...
So now he would like to know if the Q9450 works on the other board where the Q6600 was on, and if this is VISTA only related ... hopefully more news tomorrow...
You either work with me or just ignore me, that's your choice...
I've been sitting here thinking long and hard for the last 20 or so as to The situation going on in this thread. It saddens me.
First a bit about me, I have the same SN at Overclockers/Hardforum/Anand/Ars/2cpu and a few more to boot. Been on these and other forums since 1999. I have always helped as much as possible to others with thier computer problems to the best of my ability. I am 51 years of age.
I'll cut to the quick, not going to mention any names as I'm sure thats not needed nor would it be respectfull for the folks involved. I will say this; Sometimes when a person helps folks out alot, they forget that they are "just folks themselves". Noone here is any better than anyone else, its all just a sharing of knowledge and a bit of Comradere. However, IMHO, someone of high intelligence has mispoken, again, IMHO. I believe that to cast aside an issue within a pertinent thread is just Wrong.
I highly value this forum and the wealth of knowledge within it. I feel a certain someone needs to hand over an apology to the others concerned, starting a seperate thread elsewhere just isn't cutting it. Good people are involved and yes, some things do get long in the tooth, but is information nonetheless.
So take my words for and however you will. If you do not like them or my opinion, either ignore or if you like Ban me, but I felt that this needed to be said.

Hi folks.
PL 7 with fsb =450 is still not a reallity with the new 1403 bios , isn't it ?
Soooooo is the prognosis that this board runs Quads just fine but doesn't like Trues specific Q9450 or is anyone elses Q9450 having problems as well?
Well, what is frustrating about this situation is that we really don't know what the heck this CME thing is...I've never seen it defined here or anywhere else. Ket mentioned that ASUS added it on the recomendation of Intel, but..and I am only speaking for myself here...reading all of the thread traffic about it...and googling about it for 1/2 an hour...I could not find, what, if anything 'CPU Margin Enhancement' does. Asus didn't bother to mention it...and the (very limited) help that appears in the side bar of the bios screen, to at least give you a clue about what a setting is for, has nothing. So, as far as I can tell, this may be causing issues, or maybe not...its the only visible change in the bios that sets 0803 apart from the later bios versions, but 99% of the bios changes aren't visible anyway, so it could be anything else...no telling. Maybe someone can get Asus to tell us what this thing is and what it does...then maybe we can start making some sense out of it and truly rule it in or out as an issue...otherwise, it's all just guessing and wild goose chases.
Im done with Asus. I tried for almost 3 hours for some customer support and never spoke to a person in tech support. I just wanted some advice on what I should do and what is the most likely cause of my voltage spikeing issue. Im going to rma this board through zipzoomfly and pick up a biostar tpower i45. I will never buy another Asus product again. That is the worst customer service that I have ever received. I can only imagine what their rma process is like.
The people at the top are always smarter with help desk. I work at a helpdesk myself. They are slammed because some bank gave away a bunch of laptops and now they have to support the people that received them as part of the deal. Apparently they had linux on them.
I just got on with their live chat and the "tech suppot" person just told me a 45nm chip can handle a 1.8vcore. LOL It took me three hours to get that "advice". I wish I could post this conversation. This guy is clueless. It took me three hours for some idiot to tell me I dont have a problem. Look at those graphs thats not ok. There is a problem.
I have just got this mobo and I can't load Vista x64 with default settings.
The computer is locking up while it is loading.
I made sure my hard drive is on ide mode and I dropped to single stick ram and increased dram voltage. No go!!
Cpu is q9450, hard drive is raptor 74gb. Ram is micron d9gkx.
All of these components were working on previous mobo including the vista dvd and the video card.
The motherboard came with bios 704 , I flashed it to latest bios 1306 using ezflash 2.
Please help....
hahaha bull's eye.....
reading more through the thread....it looks like with the q9450, I have got the perfect recipe for trouble.
ok changed cpu margin enhancement from the default optimized to compatible...no go
changed the sata configuration from the default enhanced to compatible... no go...
grrrrrrrrrr off to bed... I can't deal with downgrading bios at this hour.
what a hassle from day one....
anything else I can try before downgrading to 803 as some suggest here?
If I were you I'd flash 0803 now before you potentially damage your cpu. No one really knows exactly what the CPU margin enhancement really does (I know what is is supposed to do but it doesn't even do that) but if you have a Q9450, 803 is the bios to be on. Later ones will just not work.
Any idea why my hdd led blinks on and off in one second intervals when the PC is idle? It'll even do this in this in the bios as well. Gets annoying at night when I'm sleeping :/
As far as I know, there is no voltage diferences between bios versions on the P5Q Dlx. I think it's a hardware thing .... each board has it's own values but won't change between a bios upgrade.
As to the SB and PCIE SATA voltages, I don't know where to make the readings of those values.
If someone knows, please tell me that I can do those readings.
Those voltages don't match my board readings so I wouldn't panic too much. My vPLL when set to 1.50 in the bios is actually 1.51 when read by a multimeter, it will be different for each board due to component tolerance.

- There are differences between different BIOSes.
- Auto setting still puts a lot of voltaje.
- Lowest value issue is ok right now.
- There are differences between different MoBos with the same BIOS.
I don't know if AUTO value at SB and PciE introduces a lot of voltaje too. I keep it AUTO until I get stability and then I'll try the lowest value...
Regards.
1403 is supposed to fix this issue supposebly but, if it doesn't try 0803. It might be just your raptor there doesn't like this board. I thought I heard soemthing about those having issues with this board, maybe I am wrong there though don't hold me to that. Here is 1403 try it then if not go to 0803 and you will hopefully be fine after that.
Modded 1403 = better IMO
We will have answers today or tomorrow but, more then likely today.. Leeg you should appologize I think but, what ever,. It just has been eating at me.
vPLL - Auto = 1.83  Hillarious!
