Blood, Sweat, and Disoriented Birds. Your worklogs are stuff of #1 Best Selling Novels with pictures to boot.
Ha! He's 6'5" and they don't call him Big Dog for nothing :) It would take a year to knit a sweater for him. I did build him a new PC for his birthday, but he's not too interested in sleeving, and abhors water cooling.Quote:
NaeKuh: so im guessing your gonna give your hubby a sleeved psu instead of a knitt sweater as a present one day???
@ CptDreadFlint - :) Thanks ... I'm sure not everyone enjoys the tortuous routes I seem to take.
@ DB: Yeah, I think Fasmia got your green monster. The only green one I have is this one:

Could not resist trying Liderc's tip. Now, to do it 24 + 8 + 8 + 6 times.

They look alot neater.. Wish i knew that before i braided all mine.
wow lookin good shazza  now if only i can do as good as that on my corsair on my first ever sleeving attempt
think you could compile the tips you got in one post ?
Looks great Shazza. The blue sleeving sure looks fantastic. What other surprises do you have up your sleeves? ;)
Wow, the sleeving job is AMAZING! Nice job.
Thanks for the compliments, guys. A learning process, for sure.
I do want to add that the blue sleeving looks great. In RL, it is a tad more "aqua" than is showing in the pics - the bottom pic of the last two is a little closer to reality. BlueAqua / Kirk probably knows what I mean, as we were at first a bit concerned about the heat shrink and sleeving matching - the heat shrink color in the pics is representative. (Caveat - at least on my monitor).
Hey Shaz, what length do you cut the shrink to get it so perfect like that? 2cm?
shaz are you using a tool or straight pins to do the 24 pin and pci-e cables?
I agree with everyone else that the blus sleeve has turned out fantastic and the latest batch of pics are top notch!!
Keep up the good work
I'd guess about 2 cm, but I'll measure once my pins get here so I can do the actual cables - instead of pretending :p: My biggest concern is being able to cut the heatshrink uniform lengths.
I always prefer a tool :ROTF: OK - a serious answer. I tried the expensive tool first, and broke it within 10 minutes. I then used staples for the first PSU I did ... it worked, but a major PITA. Now I'm using the cheapie tool:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...64_yMGBc-M.jpg
(Purchased from Petra's Tech ... I actually got 4 of them. Broke 2 very quickly, but the third has lasted a long time, once you get the hang of it). The real secret is doing it at a table, pulling the pin straight out. Trying to watch TV and de-pinning on the sofa is dangerous.
Thanks much, Dangals. I blame you for all of this nonsense!
If/when I meet your hubby I will not tell him I liked seeing pictures of your rack online . . .
why do i have the nastiest feeling your gonna make me redue the sleeving all over again. :\
He would just laugh. Don't forget ... he's met our mutual friend Redphyve.
Welllllll ... it was on my mind, especially since I just saw the latest pic of your Primochill tubing on your Classified ... but I've yet to see a finished pic in YOUR LOG :rofl::rofl:
There we go, now that's perfect Shazza, that blue is incredible.
As for finding the perfect shrink cutter, I found that the sharp cutter found on a pair of wire cutter/strippers works extremely well, it has a very crisp cut that won't squeeze before it cuts, as you often find with scissors. I found this also cut sleeve very quickly and without causing any "un-braiding" as you sometimes get with other cutting methods.
I noticed that if you burn the ends of the sleeve, sometimes it will cause those sharp edges that protrude through the shrink after heated.
I ended up not singeing the ends of my sleeve and I found it left a much rounder finish on the shrink and a cleaner transition into the connector.
Looking forward to seeing this completed, very interesting build.
looks wonderful shazza
i've never been a fan of blue... but your project's color scheme is captivating!
Today, Shaz, I dedicate this tool to you . . . .
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/863...5301865960.jpg
Good job
Thanks, Liderc. Yes, I've been slightly singing the ends of the sleeving, but will experiment with your suggestion.
Thanks, bianco ... I'm trying to figure out how to do it without "over doing it."
 Rumor has it ...
Thanks, DB ;) That is going to be an awesome build. I love the special block.
I love to shop too, so I understand. But, I do enjoy your never ending cycle of rebuilds.
Thanks, norim!
Yes ... but you have to admit it keeps us entertained. And, he does some cool stuff.
Some parts arriving in the next few days which will allow me to finish sleeving. A new waterblock that may be hit or miss, and some more BP fittings. I wanted to do this build with only barbs, but just concerned about making all the bends work. I am the BP poster girl by default.
BP poster girl? Then show us the poster :D
I used some BP fittings in my last build and I must say I will never buy another fitting again. THey are just top notch  I will be tearing down my rig in the upcoming months to just kinda replace a few things, and whatever fitting is left that is not BP will be replaced by a BP fitting !!
BP poster girl with the focus on BP, not the girl :rofl::rofl:

Darnit, you got me there
Regardless, that is some sexy stuff
mmm... glorious eye-candy... :slobber:
Shazza, that job you did with the blue sleeving is pure perfection!
Bravo!
lol darth.
dammit shazza. You're making my feel like my sleeving isn't good enough :(
umm sexy eye candy. I love bitspower and your pictures.
All this work to sleeve a PSU and what if you have to RMA it and they replace it with a non sleeved PSU? You know im running into this problem with some of my watercooled things. I set it all up, worked fine, then board just dies. Took me almost 5 months to redo everything because I knew it would take me an entire weekend just to get everything appart, put new parts in and redo most of the hard work I had done. Im running into a problem with this Microcool Banchetto where i thought I had read it was compatible with Thermochill rads and it's not.
This thread is great, love to see all this hard work, attention to detail is always good in my books. Good luck!
those bp are so nice.
Thanks folks ... I hope you do realize my point in posting my sleeving experience was actually to show I wasn't very good :( But with some helpful tips, it's getting better. And, I'll be feeling guilty til I go back and redo the Mountain Mods cube-o-color.
@Sabre2 ... you have a good point on the PSU sleeving / warranty issue, but some have actually returned PSUs they've sleeved for repair. In my case, I've already contacted Silverstone about replacement cables - and received an answer within 4 hours!, so I should be covered if there is an issue.
So, what did today bring? An urge to try and paint my radiators ... we are yet to know how successful this endeavor has been - will report back in a day or two. For now, a few pics of W-I-P:
Hmmmnnnn, the painter's tape is exactly the color I want - probably should skip the painting and just tape 'em up:

First coat of primer going on in my homemade spray box:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...66_NGLbu-M.jpg
First one after several coats ... drying overnight. We'll see if it needs more paint tomorrow, maybe a light touch of wet sanding.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...78_ui7Ko-M.jpg
Happy to report, no injuries so far today. Although I might have joined the "Blue Hair" crowd a few years earlier than I'd hoped
Damn good job as usual shazza, keep up that quality work
great work Shazza!
I like what I see so for, absoloutely love it! The blue on the rad is very nice.
Sorry if you're previously said it, but, what sleeving is that?
nice work shazza nice bitspower fittings to
i havent even done my first loop and ive got bitspower fever
Thanks oggie, Chicken Patty, and pingpong1455 ... this paint job is coming out a little better than my previous ones, but I do have a slight orange peel effect, so we'll work on that tomorrow.

100% Crop of the paint surface:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...73_uJGvw-M.jpg
@ PeterStoba - the sleeving and heatshrink are MDPC materials, purchased from murderMods - BlueAqua/Kirk had limited amounts of blue available here in the US, as he reported a couple of weeks ago in the Cable Sleeving thread - not sure what the status is now.
Might just be the blue not liking the primer. Can probably sand down the blue without hitting the primer and reshoot the blue for the final finish.
Thanks, Liderc ... that may be the issue. It's only noticeable at high magnification, but a bit of wet sanding and respraying seems to be doing the trick.
BUT ... what a day!!!! The rest of my parts came, so I assembled my CPU loop to leak test. Jumpered the Silverstone PSU ... fans run, but no pump action. Yikes, must be a bad pump. Set up a new MCP 355 ... same no action. OK, odds are, 2 pumps are not bad. Hooked up my ol' trusty PCP&C 510W PSU ... pump now works. HMMMMMMMMmmmmmm. Set up everything else for a quick look ... Board/CPU/MEM all seem to be working fine with a successful post into the BIOS. Now to sort out the Silverstone PSU. Fortunately, I had not wasted my life sleeving all those cables yet.
[QUOTE=shazza;3813282] I do have a slight orange peel effect, so we'll work on that tomorrow.

QUOTE]
Sometimes before you shoot the paint ,,
(Stand the Can in HOT tap water for 3-5 minutes then shake).
Wipe water from bottom of can so no drips , drop, before spraying.
This will allow the paint to lay flatter when it hits the spray surface.
8-10" from surface is usually about optimal can distance for outside spraying.
(12" or more " from surface and the paint will dry in the air before it hits surface.
This can cause
ORANGE peel.
Usually after priming, Just spray a haze of blue every 5 minutes untill you can barely see primer. Once primer is covered from hazing then give a full light coat. let dry and give final coat.
The water trick works every time , more so if the tempurature is above 65f outside.
Hope that helps ya down the road..
Not so easy making Cans of Paint spray like a Auto shop. I prefere Airgun , but there are times when you need paint out of a Can to look premo:up:
Your Build is amazing,, Drooling over those pics.
Thanks, gOtVotage ... I did do the hot water trick, but I'm thinking I may have been spraying from a bit far away, as I didn't want to breathe the stuff. Plus, it was pretty warm when I was spraying ... probably caused it to dry quickly as well. I'll give it another go.
And ... reporting back that my DA 750 PSU seems fine ... duh, I guess it's one of those that needs a bigger load to get full voltage going. Drat, no excuse now to not get at that sleeving. But first, let's test out the GPU loop.
glad the 750PSU is going now, post some new pics already would ya :D
Everything is running under water now ... CPU and GPU seem to be doing fine. Gotta take a time out to have a cold beer and go for a swim. Will see if I can grab some pics tonite or tomorrow --- but still very much a W-I-P. Those pesky cables are calling me ... they want to be blue ;)
hahahaha thats cool. Go enjoy some time off then get the pics :D
Have ever thought of a theme song for your rig? Not sure if this is the actual video, but just listen to the song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8lINhk8k8g
Now that's odd. Because when I did the sleeving for my main power cable on the HX1000, I found that your second choice was just right. It would slide in and if I pushed just a bit, it would click into place with no wire showing but a snug fit of the shrinkwrap up against the socket.
Huh...different sockets on the different brands maybe.
@ Chicken Patty ... I'll use that song if I make a video :)
@ Aielman - the pins look similar to the Corsair, it may be slightly different size in the connectors ... dunno.
Promised pics yesterday, but got sidetracked installing everything so I could at least test out the hardware. Took forever to do my Windows updates, as I had an old Vista disk with out SP1.
A couple quick snaps:
I'm hoping it will look a bit better when I finish sleeving the cables :p:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...14_S3AVB-M.jpg
Not a great shot of the CPU water block ... its the NexXxus Bold Highflow X2:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...08_4za35-M.jpg
Temps look good ... actually a bit too good, so I've asked in the AMD section for some guidance to make sure I'm testing properly. At 3.2GHz, CPU is showing 32 at idle, and 39-40 at load. So far tested with OCCT and Prime95. Ambient is about 23. GPU is low 30s, but haven't run any vid stressing yet.
Loop is set up as follows:
MCP 355 > Magicool Extreme 240 Rad > CPU (BE 955) > GPU (4870x2) > Magicool Extreme 240 > XSPC Res Top
More to follow, my wires are beckoning.
girl please paint that ioplate . . . .
shazza that looks very very good. and to think it is not done yet  I am really hyped up to see this finishes now
oh and yes if a video is done, that song will do the job woot woot :D
Wonderful :)
I can think of better songs than Blue by Eiffel 65. For example Blue and Yellow by The Used. Or Dark Blue by Jack's Mannequin which is probably more to everyone's taste (LOVE JACK'S MANNEQUIN!). Or She Paints Me Blue by Something Corporate! :) Well I suppose they don't repeat "I'm blue" over and over again. But the lyrics are that much deeper! Haha :)
OMFG there you are Nils! Was wondering where you'd got to :)
OK ... slightly OT here, but related to my building progress. Spent the last week sorting out closets and the garage, and now trying to organize the den ...
As you can see, a bit of a mess:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...30_6aHxU-M.jpg
As I was sorting parts and putting them in the right place ... I came across this (after I had been rummaging around in the box!!!!). Apologies for the poor quality of the photo - I really didn't want to get much closer!):
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...63_Lfpiw-M.jpg
Yikes!!! That was a pretty good size scorpion. And, as you can see from the first pic ... I've quite a few more boxes to get through.
yikes you sure do have some work cut out for ya. But hey at the end of the day when you know exactly what you have and where it all pays off :D. I just organized my room a few months ago and its much better. Easier to find the parts when you need them ;)
OMG...
so how does it go?...
big pincers... weak poison?
or something like that...
but any friggin scorpions scares the crap out of me... even the fried ones i see in china...
btw, is that an Arizona Bark Scorpion?
Wow Shazz lol, the koolance block took my attention first, then I about jumped out of my chair. Get rid of that thing quick=P
if you look at the tubing route in the picture above its very symmetrical :D looks great like that
paint the i/o to black or chrome
The tips of the scorpion might be useful to remove pins.
GREAT IDEA - I'll send a few dozen your way
@ Kinghong1970 - not sure if that's the AZ bark scorpion, but sure looks like it. I've heard that smaller ones have worse stings. I've been stung once, by a tiny one - and I'd just as soon not go through it again.
Now I'm too traumatized to finish my work  But, my husband isn't buying that, as he just spent 2 hours putting together 2 large chest-of-drawers from Ikea for my project.
O_____o
A scorpion? WTH.
Oh well, I found a snake inside my garage yesterday. It was fun poking it out the door.
This scorpion reminded me why I love colder climate
I woulda died on the spot if it was a snake. Had a small snake fall on my head in Florida - almost had a heart attack. I imagine you've got experience with scorpions too - I know we had lots when living in Sydney.
Good point, Hidetaka!
Dang im glad we dont have a prob with scorpions where im from those things can get into about anything
on another not awesome build iv never like clear cases till i saw your it is beautiful NICE WORK
Yeh I was too busy admiring the block to notice that well camouflaged scorpion :) He looks like a nasty bugger. Look how pinchy those claws are!
I don't like any creepy crawlies, amazing considering I live in Australia haha :D
i like those 45s off your cpu block, it creates great tubing lines, fantastic!
Oh NOes ... another incomplete build coming from NaeKuh :)
Thanks, Rise - still trying to see if I can get rid of some of the 45s. Problem is, I'm using Tygon 44 whatever, and it's pretty stiff stuff.

I wasn't going to continue veering off topic, but after working most of the day, said "what the Hell" and figured I would share my progress.
Got all my stuff sorted ... here's all the cardboard boxes - not keeping ANY, as I just don't wanna go down the scorpion route again. This pic should warm the hearts of our online retailers, as most are from PC parts received during the past year:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...70_CcjYm-M.jpg
And ... the den is now much more organized The room isn't quite that narrow - it's the wide angle lens:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...24_8264N-M.jpg
I don't usually post my pic in forums, but ...
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...92_KVCbe-S.jpg
Hopefully tomorrow, we'll be back on track with Torture Rack updates.
shazza, you house + backyard is amazing. i need to live there lol
love the ceiling in there!
that looks very good Shazza, love your house  Glad you got it all sorted out :)
Awesome room!
Eager to see more pictures of the beast up :)
Hopefully some pics tomorrow ... been sleeving all day (no injuries, happy to report). Dinner guests tonight, so little chance to continue my quest to sleeve every wire in sight!
Man..
i think 2/3 leet female modders are catching a case of naekuhidus in not being able to finish there projects and leaving there viewers hanging.
Sweet computer room set up! Can't wait for more pics.
Small update ...
Preparing for sleeving the 24-pin cable - first, measured and cut my heatshrink. Then checked them and recut or rejected as need be:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...94_wM9Jx-L.jpg
The unleashed beauty of the DA 750 24-pin cable ... lots of criss crossing of wires. Will be cutting the wires down to size, recrimping and sleeving:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...24_WLZV5-L.jpg
An overview of the work area and the almost finished product. Now to figure out what to plug in where for the connector that goes to the PSU. I've left the wires bare on that end for the moment, just to make sure I can see which color wire is which. Then, I'll heat shrink them one at a time as I put them in the connector.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...94_HFCaE-L.jpg
Some of my casulties. And yes, a drop of blood - managed to stick myself with the end of the pin while measuring the wire lengths. Maybe I'm too delicate for this hobby.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...23_m5BZb-L.jpg
looking good Shazza
and isn't the saying chicks dig scars ...... o wait ..... do they have to be on guys?
Love how clean and organised everything is , lady in action :D
Hah, that's so funny to see you put the cut heatshrink up against the box to double check for length, it's exactly how I ended up doing it.
From what I can see in the picture, looks like the shrink ended up looking perfect.
Thanks for the pics Shazza, looking forward to more.
nice shazza any benifit to shortening the cables and re-criping them ? (recrimping ???)
Thanks guys. I'd say the heat shrink came out "good," not quite perfect.
@pingpong ... the benefit to shortening the cables is to have less cable clutter in a small case. Crimping new ends on is one option ... soldering two pieces together is another.
I may have shortened a tad too much, given the way this modular PSU is set up. It will work, but perhaps not quite the look I was going for. Not to worry - this stuff gets easier the more times you do it, so if a redo is required - I'll just grin and http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/3...GBkR7-Th-1.jpg it. And, I will be testing it before hooking it up to my new motherboard.
ahhh ok so shortening the cables seems pretty simple cut wire to length and recrimp the pins
but what about lengthening cables ?
undo pins on each side make new cable with new pins on each side. Can't get easier. I would just say F the old cable and make a brand new one with all new parts. undoing each moles is a complete waste of time if you can buy the connnectors you want to use (if you can't then you have no choice). Performance PCs has all the PSU modding stuff you need although I recommend buying sleeving in bulk from either Parts Expess or cableorganzier.com as it is cost effective
I am familiar with that one as I just gave my last one away (used three of them in my Daywalker project). For the non-molular cables you splice near the psu, make the cable longer, sleeve it, put on new end. The only thing easier is saving money on your automobile insurance by shopping at Geiko
ok, so lemme ask you a dumb question...
i notice that the 24 pin PSU cables are all sorts of twisted... where it could be simply run nice and flat...
when re-doing it, can we just match the color sequence as original and try to eliminate the "twists"....
was actually thinking about replacing it with ribbon cables...
shazza thats a very nice small update. Like how you kept everything organized and clean. Very good work skills! the sleeving looks terrific.
How do you make them straight (without using a ribbon cable)? I thought I could, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get the right pins in the right holes of the connectors without crossing them.
Another option I had was just to get a 12 inch extender cable, then switch the female pins/connector on one end for male pins. BUT, PPCs was out of the male pins, and I always like to do things the difficult way the first time a round :p:
