I was just about to order myself a R3E EK block when I noticed that it doesn't even cover the mofsets properly... bit of a silly design isn't it?
EDIT: Sorry I think I mean VRMs, I'm very tired atm so don't take the p***. lol

yep normally you cool the mosfets....
Judging by this picture it isn't doing that then?

LOL, westokyo, on June 14th I told you to look at the pins under the cpu because I thought for sure you had bent cpu socket pins. I have a electronics component magnifying glass i use just for this procedure. I'm impressed you bent them back yourself, nice work man  glad you got her fixed....
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=881
You'll be fine IMO.
My PSU also has 1x8pin + 1x4pin. I plugged 8pin up and 4pin down leaving bottom half empty. No problems so far. Not even using molexes.
Do you really think EK would make such a mistake?
Those are not MOSFETs, those are solid chokes AFAIK. They don't need to be cooled. Heat sink is over them cause it needs to be relatively large to cool MOSFETS.
Here is the picture:
I did my LN2 runs with just 1x 8-pin CPU power and it worked fine.... If you have an extra 4-pin CPU power connector it wouldn't hurt to plug it in. :p:
That WB is made for the motherboard and cools all of the chipsets.
mine are just warm, never get hot not even under extreme load, so I don't see the point in cooling them.
Is everybody turning the QPI Line Load Calibration on or off (the one that requires using the jumper on the mb)?
most ppl who run over 4.0 use 100% yep
Another question from a relative new-comer to this board ... I want to get some new memory and I am looking at some of the RAM from Mushkin. What speed should I get for this board? I really like Mushkin and just need to know what would be the best to get for this board for a 24/7 stable 4.4GHz overclock?
:welcome:
Check this out: Asus Rampage III Extreme - results thread
You can find a lot of my BIOS settings. As you see in my sig I'm using Mushkin memory and that is 998691. For 24/7 you can use 1680 mem (210x8) if you want 4410 core, or for summer days 1600/2000 mem (200x8/x10) if you need to drop to 4200 core.
BTW, is it you looking at Aurora Borealis on your avatar?
Hey donmarkoni~ I have been to i4memory site before ... great site!! Haven't been there in a long time though. I remember eva2000 from DFI days ...
I have looked at this memory from Mushkin: Mushkin Enhanced Redline
That product number is 998805 ... where did you get yours?
And no, that is not me ... but I have been known to stand out in the cold and look at the Northern Lights for long periods of time! ;)
donmarkoni ~ I see that maybe Mushkin have re-released that Enhanced Redline as later product number (998805) ... I have ordered that stuff from the 'Egg.
Looks like same stuff as yours ...
Just thought I'd pop some extra pictures on here,
re-routed the water, and changed some cable locations, gave it a full clean inside.
still unsure about the fans, thinking maybe some acryan red glow fans??
Great job there Kortas
looks great m8 well done

Just got my R3E / 980X , but under XP ( 32bit i think ) , i cant change the multiplier with the Evo program in windows XP, is that known or? bclock changing does work.
Quick question, I am going to find my modest 24/7 oc here soon and want to know what would be best, as in most stable and safe. I am looking at 4ghz 24/7 and wondering should I work at 19x210, 20x200, 21x190 or should I just do something not so high for 24/7. Any ideas what would work best as a stable gaming platform? Thanks
Hi guys I got this board for my new extreme setup but the board does not START at all. ok the light come ON once I switch the PSU ON, but thats about it start button does not react in anyways. I tried to swap the RAM and GPU didn't help. Reseted the cmos (with the reset button and by removing the Cmos battery). Nothing. I'm runing it on a WC I did plug the 4 pins stock coolers fan cable in cpu pwm fan socket ( just in case). Didn't help.
My setup consists of:
R3E with EK water block
Corsair 800d
PC power & cooling turbo cool 1200w psu
I7-980x extreme with Swiftech XT waterblock on the same loop with mobo cooled by MCP655, Swiftech QP-RES 320 with Feser triebwerk mid speed rad fans
Corsair Dominator GT 6gb 2000mhz
EVGA gtx480 FTW x2 cooled by a seperate loop with mcp655 and 2x feser xchanger 360s
Crucial 256gb sata 3 SSD
1tb WD black caviar
fan controlers BR writter etc...
Any other Ideas why it doesn't start at all before I RMA the board ?
Silly me, I hadn't posted in this thread yet.

Hi Guys,
I have just complete a new build. A friend of mine loaned me some of his Ram Corsair cmg6gx3m3a2000c8, when running Everest version 5.30 it showed all 6 cores of my 980x. We took out 2 sticks and left it with only one stick of 2 gigs, Everst is now only showing 4 cores.
Thanks,
Hodgy
Edit Fixed dowload version 5.50
Nice Nemesis!! Really awesome man! cheers!!
Quick question do the support chips get hot if you have decent air flow?
Putting an order in for the mobo and was wondering if I need to buy the EK WB.
TIA
Yes, it can easily get up to 65 degrees under load and even 60 or higher on idle.
If you lift the whole SB NB heat sync and redo the paste and then attach the the supplied active NB cooler again with better paste, you should be fine.
I did just the above minus the provided cooler and just pointed a low RPM 120mm fan at the north bridge and I now idle mid+ 40s, 50-52 under load.
I interested in buying the EK-FB RE3 Acetal Nickel full cover water block for the Asus Rampage III Extreme. It is a nice looking product but I'm wondering whether or not I will be get any real performance gains by installing the full coverage water block on the motherboard. Also I I'm concerned about voiding the motherboard warranty by taking off the stock chipset heatsink and fan. Please let me know what your experience with this water block has been and was it worth buying and installing.
Thanks
Got a question, for some reason my mouse and keyboard doesn't work on USB ports 3&4 (the top two USB ports) but works on the others. The mobo detects the mouse and keyboard but doesnt seem to receive the input signals...
Any suggestions?
If you buy the motherboard, buy the waterblock, I would not be happy with this motherboard otherwise.
Heat was shocking on stock heatpipe, however once I cleaned up the chips cleaned off the crap Asus left. Applied decent thermal paste, temps came right down to a better level.
If you plan on overclocking replace that heat pipe right away.
Warranty? buy it from a local retailer, swap out the pipe for the block after you test the board, if you have any problems put the pipe back on and take it back, just make sure not to leave any evidence behind i.e. heatpaste spilling over the edges of the chips
Same here, and I have no idea why, they dont seem to provide enough power, I'm wondering if there is a setting for the voltage for these 2 ports like DFI used to have on there boards.
Ugh just tried it again and all is fine :D
For that to happened the motherboard should START the psu so it POST. and the Q leds can come on. BUT it doesnt START button does not DO ANYTHING. I connected my laptop RC Poster says its on stand by. I even updated the BIOS. doesnt help. the mobo does not start at all.
Disconnect everything from your mobo SATA Cables everything,
Connect your 24pin atx connector, and also the 12v plugs to the left of the cpu socket.
1, Is your PSU known to be good? if so goto 2,
2, Is your CPU and RAM known to function? Reseat CPU and RAM if so goto 3,
3, Reset CMOS goto 4,
4, Disconnect all cables (including power and reset switch) apart from cpu fan header from your mobo goto 5,
5, Try power up now still not working goto 6,
6, Cry and raise an RMA & pop it in the mail.
@Performance
A few thing to add:
1a. test PSU by turning it on with a paper clip (green and black wire)
1b. check voltages with DMM
2. skip it if you want. bad CPU or RAM should not make MB not POST.
3. you did this, right, so no need again.
4a. after disconnecting all cables, take your MB out of the case! people had problems like short circuits doesn't allowing them to power on.
5. power on with just a PSU connected. MB must switch on even without CPU and RAM.
hi, I've been trying to reach higher BCLK with my rig for the past 2 weeks and can't seem to find the sweet spot...I want to achive 4.5Ghz as my goal... Linx Stable

I have placed the EK WB on the board. and my psu is PC power & cooling turbo cool 1200w, I have jump started it so it works.
(Anyone installed EK WB on this board ? did u realize the stock MB heatsink on NB had 2 padings protecting something on the chip ? And the EK WB manual didn't ask to put any padding there)
I have been able to use RC Poster and RC TweakIt on it. Motherboard is already out of the case on a anti static box. Poster, show that the MB is on Stand By... state. no error codes or msgs... Even tho mb and cpu is installed with waterblocks the stock CPUs cooler fan is conected in PWM fan socket. and I have tried with 2 different rams and GPUs to start it nothing works. my PSU has 2 EAXT 8 pin conectors I have tried with both ON and just 1 EPS conected to MB. NO case 2 pin conections for reset, pwr, ed led etc. no USB firewire or sata conected the Bluethooth chip is out mobo is out of case on its own box.
What Can be possible cases for MB not to start the PSU except the PSU fault?
And If so can I fix them?

there are instructions for thermal pads on both sides
Is this a brand new system, i.e. are all parts new?
Tell us a little about your build process. Did you test new parts before combining into a system? Have you ever got it where something happens? Has the BIOS been updated? Have you tried a different power supply?
Does the computer on/off switch work?
What testing (other than stated) have you done and the results?
Sounds like the easiest thing to do would be to try a different PSU.
OC results, just boring air cooled ones:
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/7775/vantageoc.png
All the parts are new and I jump started the PSU it works. But Only thing I get then connecting the motherboard to PSU and thru RC poster on my laptop is "Stand by power in" . Neither the RC remote or the Start button on the board starts the PSU.
I did updated the BIOS thru TweakIT. didn't change anything.
I Installed other ram and gpu didn't help.
I've tried to start it without anything installed on (cpu, ram or gpu).
Onlyt thing i get when switchin on the PSU is the stanby lights of motherboard. start button does'nt react at all.
SO is it true that to test the motherboard if it's starting up ( starting the PSU ), I don't need anything installed on board ? Or I do need RAM, CPU ?
I would also like to know what tests does this motherboard do before starting up the PSU.
jump bios 2 ??
To answer the questions that were asked about PCI-E configuration.
I've installed the following on an R3E mobo:
#1 PCI-E GTX 480
#3 PCI-E GTX 480
#4 PCI-E X-Fi Titanium
Both GPU cards run in PCI-E 2.0 x16
X-Fi runs in PCI-E 1x
There's still a free PCI-E x4 slot available as well if you like to run another card. I think you might also be able to run the #2 PCI-E in x1 mode concurrently as well, but haven't confirmed that.
BTW, during idle the PCI-E 2.0 x16 GPUs will clock down and switch to PCI (1.x) x16 in order to save power.

I have a problem the bios does not read the correct cpu temp at all. When booted into windows and i run pc probe it shows cpu temp like 38-40 c at idle which i know it cant be as i am watercooled. If u run a a program like everest ultimate it will read the same as pc probe because pc probe is running in the background. If u shut down pc probe and reboot pc and just run everest ultimate program u will see the correct cpu reading and its like 23c idle where as pc probe reads 38-40c.

With my i7 930, I'm also water cooled and Im idleing at 38-40'C too, so does it mean I have a monitoring problem? Does it has something to do with TJ Max???
Can any of you help
I'm looking for a really good HSF that will fit the Rampage III Extreme and will not come in contact with the cooling fins on top of Corsair Dominator ram, plus be good for 4GHz.
I have been looking at a Noctua NH-D14 and the Titan TTC-NK85TZ/V2 Fenrir but they look as if they could clash.
What are all the coolers so far that fit the R3E and clear Dominator ram??
MB should start with no other components on it. It would just light the first Q LED indicating CPU problem.
There are no tests before PSU starts. It starts, then MB check, CPU, RAM, VGA...
There is one more thing you could try. Take latest BIOS, rename it to R3E.ROM, save it on USB stick, plug it in ROG connect USB port, hold ROG connect button until it flashes (as described in manual).
My 980x idle temps rang from 20 to 33 C on the cores and 20 C is impossible when ambient temps are 25 and water temps are 30C( measured with Real temp, Core temp and Everest). Just forget idle temps and look at your load temps.
IIRC, there is one thing specific for Gulftown: when CPU is idle it slows down cores to almost a halt, so it shows incredible low temps (that contradicts laws of physics :D ).
unclewebb could back me up or correct me, as that is his field of knowledge.
EDIT:
That should be it: 33 idle, 20 halted.
4 cores halted ??
Idle temps 31-23-24-20-23-21-33
CPU @ 4,3 GHz, Vcore 1,33125 and QPI 1,34375.
Mem 1950 MHz CL 8
Reason I reported the temp problem is because I have seen it reach 65 in the bios and I ain't even booted into windows yet and every things at stock settings.
So here's a little mystery that I have uncovered. I have two HD 4870x2's and was running them in the #1 PCI-E slot/#3 PCI-E slot (for X16 each). A few days ago I noticed under CCC that the second HD4870x2 was showing a disabled adapter. I thought the card lost one GPU core ... I was very upset.
Today for grins and giggles, I switched the second HD4870x2 to the #2 PCI-E slot and all of sudden, there is the lost adapter!! I show all four adapters. Now, if I switch the second card back to the #3 PCI-E slot, and I loose an adapter (GPU core) good chance it could be a bad PCI-E slot, right? Sounds like an RMA to me, huh?
Any thoughts?
A number of us have reported intermittent CPU temp problems on the official forum. For me it's settled down and I haven't seen it for a while. There was time when it would report anything from a negative number up to 80C. And it would stick wherever it was until the next re-boot. Last I heard ASUS was looking at the BIOS settings to see if was a specific combination that was causing this.
So which bios is the best?
im using 0704 with my 980x. I like it, haven't noticed anything worse than 0534 thats for sure (which was also fine with me)
Heh, my 4250 Mhz CPU = PC fail in video games, but 4209 Mhz is fine 24/7.
:(
The great thing is that my board only needs 1.25v for 200 BCLK, and 1.43v for the ram at 1600 Mhz Cas 7 at T1. The bad thing is that the ram wont work at 2000 Mhz due to having 6 sticks regardless of having so much headroom, the highest it works at is 1800 Mhz Cas 8.
No, I only raise 3 voltages - CPU, QPI and Ram.
I tried raising other ones in the past, and they didnt seem to help at all.
Its right at the edge of acceptable temperatures with 100% load at 4.2 Ghz anyway, usually around 85 for one core and 82 for the others (I believe that <85 degrees with 100% load is fine as nothing else will stress it that much anyway). I just thought that I might be able to squeeze it up to 4250 Mhz. It was vantage stable, but not Prime or video game stable.
Also my graphics cards were Vantage stable with a whopping extra 4 Mhz on this board over my previous 1066 Mhz :p:. 1075 Mhz fails. 1050 Mhz is doable for 24/7 use, but too noisy.
So 24/7 clocks are 4.2 Ghz CPU, 1600 Mhz Cas 7 ram, 1000 / 1445 on the graphics cards. I were expecting my graphics card's ram to fry at maximum speed, but its fully stable and the heatsinks on top of the chips only get moderately warm. I wish I had a way to OC the GFZ ram up to 1500 Mhz, it hasnt even reached its limit at 1445 Mhz, and FPS improves all the way up to that speed so error checking isnt kicking in either.
Improvements over my UD5 - Much lower voltages required, and cooler slot 1 gaphics card from the spacing. Before my top card was running up to 10-15 degrees hotter than the second, now the difference is just 2-3 degrees, which is what I wanted. So I'm happy, it just needed the 0602 bios to get working properly :).
Oh, I'll try that suggestion for 6-8-6. I tried 7-6-6 at higher volts but that wouldnt boot up.
Do IOH and PCI-E voltage help? I dont know if they do anything really, and I have 200 BCLK with them at default.
Sweet, how did you know that?
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/4738/ramc.png
This ram was £72 per pair for OEM sticks, awesome stuff, glad I bought 3 of them :D.
I'll stress it while reducing voltages every 5 mins until it freezes up to find the lowest volts it will work at.
I tried 1.25, 1.3 and 1.35v on the QPI, they dont do much to improve stability over 200 BCLK.
However, I never touched the IOH voltage, I would assume that might help.
When I tried 2000 Mhz on the ram, I had the QPI set to 1.4v+, and the ram at 1.65v, going by the XMP profile, and 10-10-10-30 timings with T3. It couldnt even boot into windows.
I dont know if anyone has gotten 12 gigs stable on any board at 2000 Mhz or more, 12 Gb seems to be limited to around 1800 Mhz, regardless of how good the ram is.
Dudes what's the typical CL6 timings/volts for this ram - cmg6gx3m3a2000c8 ???
I just cant be bothered doing that, trying with 6 Gb at a time.
Its also 3x4 Gb kits :p.
I dont mind with 1600 Mhz Cas 6 anyway.
Seems if you slow down the QPI, QPIv drops quite a bit, at least more than I thought would be the case... (initially I was running 1.39v then with this run to 1.32v)
I am not a big Asus fan at all, but this seems to be a good board. I just ordered one, hope to have it and join you guys by the end of the week.

So I guess my question is:
1 - Any suggestions?
and
2 - What would be the safe max under water for the 980x vcore? I know you are not supposed to go above 1.4v on QPI, but what are the other limits that I should be keeping too?
Bios is 704.
utnoris
DRAM Frequency [1600]
UCLK Frequency [3200] x1.5 not x2 so 2400-2600
4.2 you gonna need around 1.3-1.33 max is 1.4-1.5
you dont need qpi volts that high for 1600mhz n gou 1.6v-1.65 on ram
IOH Voltage [1.35] 1.2 v
IOH PCIE Voltage [auto] 1.55v
bump em up if needed for xfire or powerhungry cards
dont forget the 4 pin for v-cards
Ive found with many i7 980x retails on R3E im getting no CBB or CB tested 2 retails diff batch 3003B242 3003B396 but on UD 7 CB -145 CBB -120.... ive found its all in your bios settings on R3E to eliminate CB on retails. Ill post up bios settings sometime when im home.
no issues, no need to change :)
Thanks guys, will try later today.
