First full Radeon HD 6850 & 6870 review pushed live a bit early...
...and promptly taken down but first copied and mirrored here :D

Thank you sir.
Google cache is also working.

big performance on a small chip means big price drops, and forcing nvidia to make big price drops too.
6870 and gtx 470 perform similarly for around $250. 6850 and gtx 460 perform similarly for around $200.
to catch up to 5870, they clocked 6870 as high as it will go. 6850 on the other hand has some overclock room left.
Both cards are <150W cards. these are very small, very inexpensive chips, so amd is making a lot more money here than nvidia. gtx 470 is a loser for nvidia right now. In a way you can consider it a steal that you can get such a huge chip for such a low price..
amd has out-executed nvidia so well this year it is tear-jerking.
... and here is the first full Crossfire review ;)
Dba and power efficiency are awesome!
6850 OC 900/4400
6870 OC 950/4344
but this is without voltage adjusted i guess
Yay!! now I don't have to wait for hours!!
2 x 6850 power consumption - 393 watts (full system)
1 x GTX 470 power consumption - 411 watts
The Crossfire performance is impressive! And it looks like AMD finally got around to adding a way to disable the texture optimizations in the control panel, just like Nvidia.
Cayman is going to be a monster!
wow, i am definitely getting one, thanx for links.
The 6850 for only $179 is surprising. I thought it would end up $199. Great price / performance ratio.
$249 and $189?! Wow AMD got the prices right this time. A couple of 6850s should get the job done for anybody at only $380.
I wonder how the scaling will be in trifire. This is impressive as I think it out performs the 5870 across the board at 1080p.
And these temps etc.. are just reference cooling too... which actually might be enough this time around ^^
Crossfire and Eyefinity testing is missing
I'm definately not liking the 6870 OC... 900 to 954? My 5770's do 955 core at 1.14v...
5850 @ $255:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-500-_-Product
6870 @ $240:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-909-_-Product
Since the 6870 @ 900 Mhz is slightly faster than the 5850 @ 725 Mhz (but not as fast as the 5870) , wouldn't a 5850 @ 1000 just blow the 6870 out of the water? ;)
Yes, yes, I know power consumption would be higher.
It won't exist because there is only one crossfire bridge. (Just using common sense, feel free to correct me.)
It's in another review and it's also already been posted in this very thread?
It seems those reviews are officially back now.
http://www.pconline.com.cn/images/ht...bnamecode=home
This suggests that load voltage is 1.172v,which is very low.
AMD went with different VRM's Chill instead of Volterra, software like MSI afterburner just needs an update to support the new voltage controller, after which am sure these will do 1GHz and more.
Reviewers should have just edited the I2C values with a quick bios mod,I know I would have :D
Just checked the Guru3d review, was expected, the 6850/6870 is indeed a little slower than the 5850/5870 but its faster in Far Cry 2.
Decent enough, just wish ATI/AMD didn't mess up the naming scheme. Should have kept the 6750/6770 name instead would make more sense.
So far, looks like nothing has changed.

Yes, but 900 Mhz 6870 = ~775-825 Mhz 5850. Tesselation performance is roughly the same as well. I'm just saying, a 6870 @ 1000 is simply going to lose against a 1000 Mhz 5850. The 6870 IMO would need 1100 Mhz to really grab my attention as something superior to the 5850 from an overclocking/performance standpoint at it's price range.
Yes, once again, I know that power consumption is a few watts lower. Is it REALLY significant? I'm not quite sure.
EDIT:
HIS 6870 hit 1030 Mhz with 1.5v. Sounds like it's quite a jolly card considering 5850's at $15 more will hit that speed at 1.3v and demolish it. I think i'll pass.
Yes and looks like both cards can reach 1000Mhz core frequency 1.27v which is amazing for the 6850 and reasonable for the 6870.
im disappointed with the naming now, but satisfied with the scores if they were named 67xx, but knowing that the cayman is coming we should get something good for all price ranges
The actual review is live (and their crossfire review is up too).
Methinks we need to combine threads...

I'm a little dissapointed. Was expecting the a higher performance jump. Like 4870 >to> 5870
and why the hell do they limit 6870 just 1GB?! what about the budget eyefinity builds. we NEED AT LEAST 2GB!
Also, do any of these reviews have some crossfire benchmark results.
I want to see some 5760x1200 2xAA results
6850 and gtx 460 are both so good, such good value, that I dont feel you can lose by getting either. that said, if 6850 is 10 bucks cheaper, and it can match or beat gtx 460 even more when they are both reasonably overclocked to 850mhz, then the extra ports and lower power of 6850 really put it ahead.
Edit: there are a lot of typos in these reviews, they were obviously rushed. But here is what you need to know:
"The overclocks of our [6850] card are 945 MHz core (20% overclock) and 1165 MHz Memory (17% overclock). Both overclocks are phenomenal. Such an overclocking potential enables willing users to buy the cheaper HD 6850 and overclock it to HD 6870 performance levels."
Overclocked 460 vs overclocked 6850 is the new enthusiast battleground!
Very good card for the price, if I was building a system and wanted something 250 dollars I would be having a tough time picking cards. At around 250, the 5850 and gtx 470 would make some stiff competition, it would be a tough choice and would really rely on the power supply I was getting. The gtx 470 would be good for a big power supply and the 5850 would be good for a low end power supply. However is only when your overclocking.
At stock clocks, though the 6870 is a great card, better than a stock 5850 and 470(for power reasons). It look like they added a bit of efficiency of the cores, not a huge amount but enough to make it a bit faster than a 5850. I don't think there was anything huge though done to the architecture. Directx 11 performance is disappointing. Besides lost plant 2, I don't see really anything that would make this part seem like a next gen directx 11 card.
Neither card deserves their new naming moniker however. I hope AMD drops their cards another 20 dollars as some reviewers are suggesting. That would be the perfect price for them. At 220, this card would be very very 8800gt like.
Man though, NV having to sell their gtx 470 for 240 bucks, ouch.
CF performance is very impressive and honestly(I dislike the single CF connector though), shake any want of a gtx 480 since they are the same price and they use less power.
The 6850 isn't really impressive because the gtx 460 performs more or less the same with the gtx 460 overclocking better.
that is not accurate. reviewers were blown away by the gtx 460 value, and now they think 6850 is an even better value. and we don't even know the final street prices once all this settles down.
and the overclocking verdict between the two has yet to be conclusively decided. users don't have the cards in their hands yet!
Hints about what Cayman has coming up next:
HardwareCanucks
[H]ardOCP:Quote:
November will see the release of the Cayman XT-based HD 6970 and Cayman Pro-based HD 6950 which have all of the features seen in Barts plus enhanced rendering scalability and off-chip buffering for DX11 applications. These will be the spiritual successors to the HD 5870 and HD 5850 and should go head to head with the higher end Fermi cards.
December will see the introduction of Antilles which is meant to be the lynchpin of AMD’s renewed assault on the DX11 market. The HD 6990 will bring untold performance to the table through the use of a pair of Cayman GPU cores and additional features we can’t divulge at this time.
PC PerspectiveQuote:
The 6900 series will have a superset of features compared o the 6800 series. This means that there will be features and architecture differences between 6900 and 6800 series. This allows AMD to take more chances on the high-end enthusiast class GPUs and architecture things different, to really step up performance that enthusiasts demand. So, just to restate, the new 6800 series will offer performance of the 5800 series, at a lower price, with lower power, and a smaller chip.
HexusQuote:
Later in the year we will see the release of future architectures that much more unique in the Cayman and Antilles product lines. We'll have to leave you with that tease for now and touch again on both of those items later.
Looks like AMD might be back to playing the high-end GPU gameQuote:
These arrive armed with improvements in the two metrics discussed above, soon to be followed by a genuine performance GPU in the form of the Radeon HD 6950 and HD 6970 'Cayman' parts and, a little while later, the dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990, code-named Antilles. Phew!
One thing for sure the ~$200 price segment from either camp is looking really good. Guess I'm glad I'm not really looking for a video card right now, would be a tough choice.
I'm not sure if the value is worth the potential headaches of AMD/ATI drivers... Have they gotten better recently?
That's my own opinion. The 6870 to me is the better card because NV really doesn't have a practical solution at the moment to compete with it.
Man you can't get away with saying anything about AMD cards unless its overwhelming praise. Not impressive doesn't mean its a bad card. It just not a game changer to me.
The gtx 460 just needs a price drop. The overclocks in the reviews seem alot less impressive than when the gtx 460 launched.
I'm a bit surprised at some of the early OC results on the 6870. Quick bench with mine shows 1000 core easy with no voltage increase. Max of the slider actually.
Cant wait for i2c support in the oc utilities :D

I think they can. They sold the various gens of g92 in the 130-120 dollar range and they still made money in their income statements if it wasn't for lawsuits and other similar payments.
The gtx 470 at 250 dollars is not sustainable though. NV needs to get a full gf104 on the market with 750 clock about to compete with the 6870 and they will lose on the power front, but it won't be a disaster like the gtx 470 in this regard.
Basically, the HD6850 is the de-facto standard @ $179.
Not to mention, the fact that the 6800 series supports the open community... is an added boon for the end-user as well. (g/j amd)
ummm I've owned more ATI cards than Nvidia pretty sure I'm not alone in my disdain of ATI drivers.
Go into the ATI Forums what do I see on page 1:
"ATI cannot make working video drivers"
"Cats 10.9 NUKED my OS install"
"ATI Crashes - Compatibility or just the norm?"
Don't give me that fanboi crap I just don't want to drop $240 bucks on a headache.
Yep, same old same old, simple (naive, fanatic, or stupid ?) generalization is a :banana::banana::banana::banana: huh !
Yep, G92b the 270 mm^2 chip built on high yielding, plentiful supplied, cheap TSMC 55 nm process. Different story if we put GF 104, the 367 mm^2 chip built on low yielding (full fledged GF 104, where art thou ??), less abundant, relatively expensive TSMC 40 nm process. And to think GF 100 530 mm^2 chip has to get down so low fighting & competing in the mainstream segment, i just LOL'ed. :ROTF:
But ofcourse, there are brigades of ignorant jerks who think the world is flat as a table, as long they can play their favorite games in the basement. Nevermind.
I ask about the software that will enable a product to run. Buying a corvette with a faulty engine isn't a value either. You really need to take a look in the mirror before you start calling people "ignorant or jerks". Asking Questions about something someone would buy isn't "stupid". Last time I checked it's being an educated consumer. Early adopters tend to run into this problem a lot. "Naive" is buying something without doing your research, not to mention "stupid". But call me what you want but I can tell you, you're the only one who's the face of all these labels. But name calling isn't what a "fanatic" would do now is it?
Ever thought of the fact that because, as you claim, you owned more ATI cards than Nvidia, you've obviously encountered more issues?
Or how about the fact that a lot of issues people complain about ATI, exist on Nvidia as well?
Ever run Nvidia drivers back when Vista was around? I couldn't go a day without my 8800 Ultra's drivers crashing and forcing a reboot. Switched to the 4870X2 and haven't had that same crash at all on the same rig.
Heck, even Microsoft said that the majority of its driver issues were from... guess who? Nvidia
Frankly, I'd say 85% of the so-called ATI driver issues are common issues that could have been encountered on either ATI or Nvidia, and a good chunk of the claims are pure perception. That is, enough people say "ATI has worse drivers / Nvidia has better drivers" and people start believing it as fact.
Just like microstutter was an issue a couple people brought up, then everyone started believing microstutter as a huge multi-GPU issue, when most people didn't even know what microstutter was! People started throwing graphs out there and videos claiming things were microstutter, when they clearly weren't. Heck, I even heard people on this very forum claim to have microstutter in a single GPU
I'm not saying you haven't had issues, but hearing generalizations from people all the time from forums without anything to back it up (and often, its the user's wrong) annoys me to no end
the biggest advantage of ati over nvidia is a singlecard triple monitor solution via eyefinity.
That's esp why I'm dissapointed the 6870 didn't ship with 2GB by default.
Well this threads been handed over to fanbois and analyzing hardware reviews has long been dead, Good job people.
I've had Vista running on my current PC for 3 years, prior to my 8800GTS which I have owned since it was released was a x1950xt. I have never once had a real issue with my card nor vista. The only issue I had was with one annoying set of drivers. Prior to that I had a x800 Pro, prior to that I had a 9600 Pro I think it was. I really don't need to justify my purchase history to you people. I'll buy a solid product when I see it, have I enjoyed ATI's drivers in the past? NO. I have not, I've always hated their control center layout as well.
In September of 2009 I even asked how people like the new CCC since it seemed like ATI finally did something visually great like how Nvidia had things going at the time! http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=234775
You people need to stop defending your purchase choices and start being helpful, seriously you people are coming off as serious d-bags. Just think how you look to others who want to ask questions and are now just afraid they are going to get attacked.
GTX 460 1gb kinda win the battle but very slight...Quote:

Kinda ironic none of you fanbois have even answered the question or given me proof that they have. Like I asked, have they gotten better recently? I feel like I'm in a Abbott and Costello routine. Seriously people hardforum.com check it out I think a lot of you would fit in very well over there.
P.S. Idiots I got banned from there after being a member of 7 years over my comments over an Nvidia partner! This is amazing really... I feel like it's 2006 again and Republicans are calling anyone who questions them un-American. Tech enthusiasts eating their own lovely.

Thats really just as bad of a generalization, I never had any issues with Nvidia and Vista at all with an 8800gtx, however that doesn't mean you didn't have your problems.
Problems happens, there are times you can have two hardware/sw identical computers with one being a turd and the other an angel for no obvious reasons.
Really great price / performance cards, and the power consumption is amazing.
But I dont have to feel too bad about my GTX 460s at least, they are still on par, just less efficient.
It took a while for ATI to fill the DX11 £150-£200 gap with something decent though (5830 was NOT good enough for me).
So when will the 384 shader G104 chip get released? think it should be slightly faster than the 6870.

Nvidia cant make drivers either, just ask anyone playing BC2 how Nvidia cards does...
This serie is a 9700,8800gt and such all over again, tremendous value at the price point.
old 5850/6870 performance for a much better price.
Old now, get us cayman details.
actually, 260.52 did it for me, not stuttering while having good fps(gtx 470), a friend of mine bought a hd 5850 an was forced to change render ahead from 2 to 0 in the ini file, then it broke and changed to a gtx 460. maybe it was a bad card who knows :p.. Cant wait to see how the hd69xx cards faires, the cf performance of the 68xx series must be some kind of indication...
I like the reviews, good competition for the first time in ages.
Now I'm glad with my GTX 470 that got delivered today. It's very similar to the 6870. Each best the other in certain games.
Great if you ask me, let the price wars commence!
No clue if it was a hardware change or software change, but the CF scaling is definitely improved. Maybe the changes to rebalance the GPUs and change the dispatcher & scheduler have helped
That was the point, it's to make an example of how ridiculous the generalization is. People complained all the time about the driver issue on forums for Nvidia cards back in 2006/2007, so hopefully people see how ridiculous perception can be
I can beat that. Sort of. 1.3VGPU. Fan speed at auto.

I have to agree wiith mr.Glow9
Back to years of ati9800pro, x700, x800.
I have more problems with ati drivers then nvidia drivers, i cant remember if i have any problem with nvidia drivers...
In house there are 3 nvidia cards! gtx260, 9800gtx and gts8600, non ati at all.
I dont give sht abaut whos better at some tests labs, im more interesting in practice usages, im allways want good drivers, it will crash if i will do max performance, then, like im able to play older game??, im able to install (3dfx)glide wrapper??? can i use PhysX too???
Good drivers makes lots of diference so my house wins 3/0 for nvidia! and that not by "performance"
Very low min FPS in Metro, even tough avg is >70
http://lab501.ro/wp-content/uploads/.../metro_1_1.png
Its actually strange, when it comes to shader power from real shaders including core speed. NV and AMD are almost exactly the same when it comes to speed in games when you include the clocks of these cards.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3987/a...ange-market/19
The 280 shader 6870 is clocked at 900 mhz and is 5% slower than a 850/1700mhz 336 shader gtx 460. To me this means NV needs to find a new way to get performance because although their shaders possess the same amount of GPU power more or less, NV way of utilizing them uses way more energy(as this card uses 50watts more of power) and they need to be able to raise clocks to compensate for AMD(1+4) shader design. To me, this means they have to get rid of all things related to the CGPU. AMD from the sounds of it, got rid of one of the last things that made its GPU a CGPU, they got rid of FP64 according to Anand to save size and energy. AMD part is strictly for gaming which is why I think it so efficient at using energy.
Nvidia needs to make two lines, which is a sad truth for them. They cannot catch up to AMD for performance per watt, if they keep on making these power consuming CGPU graphics cards. They need to do something that strictly does games.
The only glimmer of hope is from a transistor stand point, gf104 is actually pretty good because it is has 15% more transisters and if Nvidia made a made a 384 850mhz gf104, it might be 15-20 percent faster than a 6870. The problem though is with all that GPU compute part still in it, it makes getting such clocks hard and it also I can imagine would makes such a card would use just as much power as a gtx 470.
With fermi NV took a step backwards as cards like the gtx 275 and the 4890 were comparable for both power usage and speed in games. With the added functionality of fermi in regards to its computing abilities, it took a massive step back in regards to power consumption.
If Nvidia continues to keep the GPU compute parts in their cards it will be much more difficult to catch up to AMD on the frequency front and the power efficiency front.
NV needs to make a gaming line architecture and a CGPU architecture. The gaming line needs to have none of the GPU compute parts. NV needs to go back to the drawing board and remember what business it got into in the first place.
The 6870 is a monster card. It's like a 5770 - crap + awesomeness.
My concern isn't about being attacked. My concern is that I have no confidence in how people can make their statements.
There are thousands of reviews on graphics cards and out of the hundred or so I've read only one of them focused solely on drivers from each company. AMD came out looking like a dog but that information is about 5 years outdated.
It would be nice for someone to just plan out a Driver development retrospective every other generation so we have something resembling empirical data.
had no problems at all with amd drivers; every problem i found was fixed withina month or two (BFBC2 loading times; VLC support were the only problems i had in the last 2 years), the driver updates are very frequent and installation is quite easy: just run the installer and it will automatically remove the old driver; running tools like driver remover only cause headaches, last time i had install issues was on Vista 64bit when i ran regcleaner before the install.....
just go for it and give it a try; you won't be disappointed unless you start to play around with things like drivercleaner ;) (if you take a look at the amd forums you'll notice every single person complaining that their driver install failed used something like driver "cleaner" or reg "healer after manually uninstalling the old driver)
To the Cards: ok at first 6850 was supposed to be slower than 460 768, then i t was on par and now it is more than 10%faster than the 1gb version while consuming even less power
and 6870 is a win too; GTS450 die size; GTX 460 price and power consumption; GTX 470 performance :D
6950 are 6970 are the tops
6990 is a 2chip monster.
GTX460 @150w
3 months later...
add $40 extra = 6870 @150w - difference paid in 2 months running cost.
So to sum this up Nvidia released its comeback card which should been release ages ago only to be trumped within the span of 2-3 months. I like Nvidia BUT this is a Win for AMD, and i feel sorry for the fanboys trying so desperately to justify their purchase here in this thread.
Could have worded it better I suppose but in any case it is a valid question. Adding what games you play and asking about specific drivers issues is the way to go.
The personal attacks and calling someone an idiot around here seems to be common place over the past few weeks in these 68xx threads, that's a shame.
People need to stop being such jackasses and if you can't answer the question then don't post.
HD6850 is not faster than GTX 460 1GB
Most of the reviews so far says that HD6850 is about on par with GTX 460 1GB but some says that it slower and some say it faster.
HD6870 has small die size ? So what ? Phenom II X6 has much larger die size than any modern intel desktop porcessor, does that mean that Phenom II X6 is horrible processor ? Big die size may be a bad thing for Nvidia or AMD (the company), but it is not always bad for consumers as long as it have good performance, price and power consumption.Quote:
and 6870 is a win too; GTS450 die size; GTX 460 price and power consumption; GTX 470 performance :D
Also, HD6870 is more expensive than GTX 460 1GB. Cheapest HD6870 in newegg is $240, while cheapest GTX 460 1GB is $200
6850 4% faster than gtx460 at average.
Most review sites used nvidia cheat them overclocked editions vs stock 6850.
6850 and 6870 is now the the new king of the hill at the 230 pricepoint.
Which is what most people buy for price/performance.
At least the small die give amd profit which they need when Nvidia bleeds big time with their die size as they now sell for a loss.
Yeah AMD is raking in the profit. They made a whole million dollars last quarter! God, when will the stupid "small die = free money" claims stop :(
Since when 1030 beats 1060? :)Quote:

Signs of NVIDIA's "loyalists" today:
a) The word "driver" is repeated at least 3 times in a short paragraph.
b) Citing unbelievable driver "headache" from all over the internet, but can never come up with a concrete example of the famous driver issue.
This has been the dullest GPU release ever
BOOOOOOORING AMD
New graphics card which is slower than the old one
I took my time to carefully read the entire Hardware Canucks review and I must congratulate them on one of the best reviews I have read as of yet. Everything is very clear and open and their methods were concerned to mimic real gaming as much as possible with their choice of using fraps on 3 run average instead of going lazy on timed demos which sometimes dont bring everything on the table.
Loved your review and loved these radeons, and I was especially shocked to see the massive improvement on MIN frame rate which ao many complained about with cypress. Also very impressed to see 6850 matching or beating gtx460 1gb accross the board.
thanks!
I like the 6870. Most rants ive seen about it is mostly due to naming it 6870 instead of 6770, people rant because they think its a 5870 replacement.

Are you noob??? look at this:

It means 6950/6970 will be at top.
