they were just moaning about the cards cooler really... the cores will hit 1ghz with enough voltage but you are going to need better cooling.... then the cards wont throttle down from over heating...
Yeah, but they throttled without OC too!
try taking the cooler off ading better tim and reseating
I don't have these issues, cause I don't have this card. But I want to buy one...but not with these problems!

for the money the 5970 is a very poor design.
That's a lot of TDP to be designing with. I think a simple revision of the card (better thermal solution and bundled software to control voltages) would solve the problems. Otherwise, just wait for a nice waterblock!Quote:

Hi guys.
Does anybody have problems when they try to overclock HD 5970 over 1GHz. Mine is stable on stock cooling and it hits 1Ghz without a problem at 1.24V. The problem is when i try to set ckloks like 1010 or 1020...
When i click aply it just goes back to 1000 in MSI afterburner or AMD GPU Clock tool.
Any ideas?

That's because of the CCC limit of 1ghz on the core. Wait for a bios with higher CCC limits and flash to that one as soon as it is released to clock it higher :up:Quote:

No offense, but this doesn't show the real problem this card is having. You can clock the card to whatever you want, but it seems to be throttling under load and dropping the clock speeds. I don't see a log of clock speeds under load in the first set of screens. Those VDDC's at 110c are VERY scary.Quote:

the bugger would not run stock clocks stable anyway.
maybe forget the throttle and just have it shut down would b better i did not buy the cards to underclock them forget that.
The 4800 series don't have hardware throttling, it's done in software. The 5800 series is different. The 5970 has a throttling issue, period. It's been noted already by too many professional reviewers. It has nothing to do with prototype hardware, most didn't even receive actual hardware until a few days before launch. They were using retail hardware. Even AMD is blaming heat for the issue.Quote:

Even though you are at > 1.3v, it is incredible that Vrms can goto 80-90C even under a full cover waterblock.
