It was done. Now it comes forth from the ashes seeking its revenge.

That many came to Simon's aid. Phenom II C2 on H20.

But now a new threat rises from the east. The Dragon has shown its new FANGS.

Many have tried, many have decended to the coldest depths known to the Universe and broken 7GHz! But what can we do only with the basic elements? Wind and Water against Fire and Ice?

I love to do a cold air, but right now but it's 70F here >_> stupid Ohio weather then other day it 35F in the morning.

Can I be in on this if I buy one?? I believe he needs info from everybody who has a C3 cpu. Also do I have to be running DDR3 or can I do it on my current Asus M3A79T Deluxe?

Cpu voltage is 1.50v in bios, but 1.46v effective under load. I replaced my original Silent Eagle fans with two 3500rpm Delta fans for some extra cooling power.

I will be doing some air test yes, but I am moding my water setup today. It should do pretty well.;)

Edit: My water setup is complete. Can't wait to give it a go. All air is out of the system and the water block is very very cold.....

hey, does anyone know what could be added to alcohol to aid in lubrication? and could sustain extreme temps? Just a thought:p:

Hmm, I work for the airlines and I can get some pretty strong glycol.......I think good to -60 to -40 I believe:yepp:

We use it for anti icing the aircraft,We coat the wings before takeoff to prevent ice and snow buildup. I think its 100% glycol its a bit thick, and can be mixed with water to get a more liquid substance.

Not sure about mixing it with Alcahol?

well how cold?? if you are talking about cold winter air (-20-+10 then yes glycol with water at 40/60 or 50/50 ratio mix will do it.

i have so much homework to do between now and wednesday i probably wont get to do any good tweaking until then but i will get some results up asap

in the end i managed to optimize the water cooler for a load temp of 22C and idle of 16C. the ambient was 20C at the time ;)
4.16 was an easily achievable stable clock. (long after these shots)
and no that isnt a serious benchmark run i was just working out some kinks. spi 32m http://hwbot.org/compare.do?resultId=919380 4.3

on the coolermaster v8 i am having to leave it at stock volts and 3.8ghz due to stupidly high temperatures topping 60C at times which is making me uncomfortable whilst gaming and what not.

Keep in mind I've only had a few hours with this chip, so things can only get better... ;)

I'll put this puppy under water soon and see what it can really do! It still seems to exibit the same temp limitations of the C2's (~55c), but it gets MUCH higher clocks at lower voltages... SWEET!

Distilled water mixed with Glycol works great for water-cooling. Keeps corrosion and algae to a minimal as well as cold resistant :)
You’ll find instructions on the correct way to mix it on the bottle most of the time, to get the most effective mixture.

Try update to Overdrive 3.1 for Smart Profiles.

MB Fan control doesn't work with all boards. Also, disabling Smart Fan Control in BIOS may resolve.

The CPU registers on AMD processors do not report negative values.

AMD OverDrive also displays the motherboard sensor that reads the CPU temp value (in addition to the CPU register value). This can read sub-zero in most cases: ASUS maxes at -55C, DFI maxes at -86C

It depends on the board design / SuperIO chip.

AMD OverDrive 3.1 allows the board vendor to configure OverDrive such that it reads primarily from the Mobo sensor (which can read sub-zero). But if this definition is missing from the BIOS code then OverDrive just reads the default CPU temp input (CPU register or SB-TSI value).

My other setup will cause the waster to freeze. Also, for the first time, I am getting different clocks in xp 32 vs win7 64bit.
My other chips were the same in both OS's. Maybe my water setup will net better results.

a little more fun tonight. with a few added features. swapped out my apogee gt for a enzotech sapphire all copper block and kicked the nb to 2800+.
heres a vantage run you wanted 64nomis,no overclock on the video cards though as i forgot to clock em up.
idle temps were -15c about 20secs after stopping prime95,lowest temp seen so far was -22c on the asus lcd poster. again no fan speeds as there are no fans than run off the board.

My vantage runs are pretty lame with my video card setup, I can run one if you want though:p:. I am about 100mhz under equinox overall. Need more cold :D.

NYC is a very humid city and I was wondering if you guys are having any moisture building up on your tubes?
I have very thick walls on mine so it shouldn't be a problem.
I think all I need to do is unscrew my radbox and fans and lay the rad down in the sink filled with water and lots of ice.
I chose my apt with overclocking in mind.

I have base board heat and it is very dry in here.
I still haven't iced down my setup, which will bring on the moisture to the lines.
I am still debating which way to go for the best chilled water setup. I want something more on the lines of 24/7.

These chips are awsome. I can boot and run flawless @ 4.2ghz on my water setup.
I can bench 3d @ 4.3ghz and light benches @ 4.4ghz.
I will update my results this weekend if I can get the temps down more. Great thread as always.:up:

Hey, Im new here. Im a friend of Charged3800z24 and i just bought a Phenom II 965BE C3. I got 3.8 GHz at stock voltage, bumped up the voltage and was able get 4.0GHz on ambient air! This is an awsome chip!

Crap! I removed the fans and disengaged the radbox but my lines to the rad wont reach the water.

The only way is remove the tubes from the rad barbs and plug them with something. that means I need to plug 4 spots at the same time. I really dont feel like refilling and bleeding my whole loop tonight.
and it would be better if I had a friend here to help my switch to the extension but I could do it myself.
Ive use sharpie marker caps as plugs before but maybe I could kneed some Scotch seal string into a ball and use that instead.
Do you think I'm going to even get any dramatic gains going to chiller?
I normally wouldn't even mess around with this and go straight to dice container or ln2 but I only have 1 AM3 board and its in my main rig so this mission appealed to me
but at the same time its almost easier for me to remove the board and trace a socket template and start cutting neoprene and screw the container on.
I think that will definitely happen on friday after I make it through this h20 mission alive. Then I can post how well these scale with cold going from h20 ambient to chilled h20 to subzero xtreme.

word of caution trans am, i hope you have your cpu,socket and board protected from condensation. you will get condensation i gaurantee.

I bought 2 x 8ft (16ft) of tubing from Lowes for $5. The garage is a little colder tonight and my tubing is getting a little mist on them.
So do some prep work before going to cold. I decided to pull the water off and go back to air till I can get stuff to prep my board, and get the lines wrapped.
I don't think I'll get as cold as Equinox, but hope to get some better clocks.

what a way to finish a hell week at school, get to pop this bad boy in!! first go around with it, with normal ambients, etc... will now try to cool it down in here a little bit :)

fans ar 4x180mm and each one runs at about 800rpm they are connected to a molex so I cant get a fan reading.

You guys are posting up some good numbers. :up: I have a new 965-C3 (from NewEgg) installed in a Crosshair III but I’m still working on the cooling system at the moment. I will use the water cooled by the wind in hopes of controlling the fire of this Dragon, just water cooling without ice or a chiller, just a radiator with a fan pulling the air. Now if I can get some subfreezing temperatures to help this cooling system but it doesn’t look good for the near future?:( I hope this challenge will be running for a while? :)

Got my 965 C3 today... To bad it clocks like a C2 compaired to shadow_419 ,crazydiamond and my temps are beter :( , Its about 100-200mhz beter than my 940BE. If you see a 965 C3 with stepping 0942FPMW stay away from it or run like hell!. I wanted to get some great scores in this thread but its not worth to give it coldair becuse it clocks to bad on normal air..sad but true. It seens that my luck with cpus/memmorys have runed out.

whats the voltage on the NB?? Also whats the voltage showing in windows for the cpu??

I would suggest leaving the NB and HT alone, set the cpu to stock voltage and raise the multi to see how far you get then start raising the voltage on the cpu to 1.45v and push again. Dont raise the nb first then try to get the cpu stable.

Keep playing with it man, it's nothing new for Phenoms to be a little finiky....
I played with mine tonight, had it really cold in here with low water temps and cranked the V's pretty high with no luck.
Then I lowered the voltage and got better results! Take it slow and work with it, unless you had a truely GOLDEN 940 I find it hard to believe your C3 won't be a better chip!...

I'm probably not Xtreme enough, but 4.02 @ 1.44v with 2400 on the IMC @ 1.2v is a pretty sweet chip in my book!

Like a woman, sometimes Phenoms need a gentle touch to find out what makes them happy... :D

I have no doubt there's more in this chip, I just need to figure out what knobs to turn to make it happy... :yepp:

Keep playing with it and I'm pretty sure you'll be pleasently surprised!

More i play with it i get more sad...and also did it "for sale" yesterday i think i got about 10 pm asking if i sold it becuse it clocks bad like the one they got. Looks like many in Sweden got 0942FPMW and they all clocks bad some have 965 C2 that clocks same or beter.

Yes its a lucky draw But....this is sad numbers...

My old chips 2x 940BE 0850 both did about 4060-4080mhz super pi1m max in summer temp. My 965 C3 do max about 4200mhz Super pi1m winter temp(improvement with 120-140mhz)
My best 940BE did 3970mhz in 3dmark2006 my 965 C3 Fail @ 4150mhz but can run it @ 4100mhz(improvement about 130mhz)

Stock is 940BE 3.0ghz and 965BE 3.4ghz and the 965 have also never stepping C3 but still it only can make about 150mhz more clocks than 940BE?

Edit : Random crash @ 4.1ghz after 3dmark2006 and 20 min.


One good thing in all this sad news..... the Amd Overdrive 3.1 works great now!

It's Cinebench stable FlanK3r... I always use CB for a rough judge of stability, it's quick and it's always a good sign if it passes! :p:

I'm still working on it, but my chip doesn't seem to like high V's at all. I may very well be able to get 4.1, but I'm not sure about 1.5v's... ;)

BTW: I haven't even started pushing Mem or IMC yet.

my 955 c2 didnt like high volts at all.... my 940 took the volts way better than 955 and actually had a higher validation, but the 955 need less volts to get higher stable clocks (around 1.5v for 3.75ghz on 940 prime stable, 1.48v for 3.85ghz prime stable on 955..) i could barely even bench my 955 over 1.5v let alone try to prime on it

Well I started at about 1:30 am and its about to be 7am, after running some other tests and trying a few times to run prime at 4.4ghz but not finishing I went with 4.3ghz for prime 30 minutes. I only bought 2 bags of ice and they lasted about 3 hours. fun but Im tired now lucky Im off today:yepp:

Hopefully there is a booby prize category for self contained daily driver ambient water rigs, not intended to compete in the clean car competition :) I'd love a golden c2 or c3 sample, or a 5850. Don't force me to try and voltmod my 4850!

So, I didn't have the best c3 sample, but I worked with what I had, and I had fun and learned some things. And it's faster than my two month old unlockable 550be (one weak core) that's now sitting on my desk. Some of you guys are seriously extreme.:clap: Charged suggested I try more extreme cooling, but I'll have to work on my wife for that to happen. Wish me luck!

Wow, I'm such a forum noob. Let me know if I need to redo the images! Shots are rig, screenshot at 30 min under load in p95 blend, screenshot 5 min after blend ended, and gratuitous shot of my block and rad.

The water cooling is mostly 5 year old swiftech stuff. Not nearly as complicated as the chiller setups here, but fun to tinker with. I had to make a cpu waterblock adapter from a piece of old computer case, since it was for socket A. It was a bugger to cut the holes for the adapter, since I didn't have a hole saw that small and it was hard to turn a jigsaw with a metal blade virtually in place! I just added the 4 polished aluminum push/pull fans. Of course, they are slightly too big, so I had to drill new holes in the tabs of the rad, directly adjacent to the old. The fans are 2200 rpm adjustable, currently on bust! There are 1200 rpm intake and exhaust fans in the case.

I could reach 3.9 gig on otherwise stock settings at 1.4875v, but I tried 4 gig at 1.55 and no joy. I tried for a nice balance, so the run in the pics is 3850 @ 1.475v, cpunb is 2750 @ 1.3125v, ram is 1666 c7 1t tight sub (had to go with 250 ref and 1333 divider, no post 1600 c7). Core was 49C at 30 min under load, and dropped to 33.5C 5 min later, with ambient around 23.

What I really meant was if the way I was presenting my results was fine and if the result information was adequate since I had'nt included the cpuz screens as requested:). You may be looking for something specific in that info that I may not be including here.:D

I planned to run prime today but the outside temp was still too high, as was trying to run @4.3GHz but the cooling system just couldn’t hold the CPU temp down. I ran prime @4.2GHz earlier but I just wanted more today but like I said Mother Nature just didn’t want to help. Hopefully this coming week will be cooler. I did play with 3D06 though so the day wasn’t wasted.:)

The radiator is from a Geo Metro along with the fan (12V which runs fine powered by an old 200W PSU) the cooling system is filled with 50/50 premixed coolant (antifreeze). The processor voltage reads low in AOD and CPU-z though as its 1.57V+ in the bios. Anyway I can’t run with some of you guys right now but maybe when it gets cold here.:D

This is the ugly Dragon (short on looks for sure) but it is somewhat functional. The photos bad I know, too much outside light but you can get the idea I hope.
