I've been meaning to start one and the i5 one has given me inspiration. I don't mind correlating the results in a table/spreadsheet. I'm open to suggestions on what constitutes stable. Chronic, namegt, emuexport and a few ohers have obtained good resultt @ around 4ghz so far.

I've got to 3.7Ghz prime95 stable with 8GB of memory but temps were hovering around 90 degrees. EvGA P55 FTW, ci7 860 8GB gskill ripjaw, Xigmatech S1283
@ RADCOM: need to know your voltages and temps ... :)
So far I have 4100mhz LinX stable, have not run an 8hr blend though. I lose video in LinX at 4200mhz. First time it happened was at 4.0ghz so I upped the PCH voltage and seemed to fix the problem. I am unsure what some of these voltages are safe to run at for 24/7 use.
Just playing around on water cooling tonight, getting a feel for this combo before benching with the cold stuff tomorrow night. First run was nice and easy at 1.45V...22-25C ambient.

miahallen: Can you try upgrading to RealTemp 3.36? It should do a better job supporting these new CPUs and will report your MHz correctly.
I'm looking for a tester to post or PM me a comparison of RealTemp 3.36 vs CPU-Z when C3/C6 is enabled in the bios while you are in the middle of running a single threaded benchmark like SuperPI. During this test the multiplier should be constantly cycling between the default turbo multi and the maximum turbo multi. I'm hoping to see RealTemp report the average multiplier on the hardest working core while this benchmark is running. TIA for any feedback.

Thanks for the help KURTZ. I was hoping to see the above test with the BCLK at the default of 133 MHz so you don't need to do any overclocking. Enabling turbo allows these CPUs to clock up the multi all by themselves and it should also add additional core voltage automatically if the processor needs it.
I'm just interested to see what RealTemp 3.36 reports when C3/C6 is enabled for the multiplier when not overclocking. The multi on an i7-860 can cycle up to 26X when turbo and C3/C6 is enabled in the bios. That's how Intel designed these things so I just want to make sure that software can correctly report this. I'm not sure if CPU-Z will report 25X or 26X or a bit of both during this test. RealTemp works out the average and should hopefully report a multiplier somewhere between those two numbers when running a single threaded bench like SuperPI. It would also be good to see if RealTemp can correctly recognize these new Xeon chips or if I need to give it a tweak.

For Core i7 / i5, Intel moved the multiplier to where VID used to be located. If you use an old monitoring program, it will look in this CPU register and see a multiplier value where VID info used to be located. It then converts that into a meaningless VID number. If Core Temp 0.96.1 shows the VID changing on your Core i CPU, what it's really showing is that your multiplier is changing. Intel is usually very consistent from one generation to the next but once in a while they move things around which is why it's always a good idea to upgrade your software when a new series of CPUs comes out.

Built a new i7 860 system!
My #1 requirement for the build was a system that would encode x264 significantly faster than my current E8400 Wolfdale @ 3.6 GHz.
So far, I'm impressed. Seems around 2.5x faster than my E8400. I've applied a mild Overclock to match core for core speed of my old system, and had the CPU at 100% load (encoding dual x264) for over 24 hours with no problems.

I assume the "VIN1"/"Vcore2" readings are the VTT voltage? I need to get around to playing with my new system, I'm just too busy with a new game coming out every week. :)
The first (1.15) is the CPU VCore, the second (1.63) is the RAM Voltage.

i'm getting 20x200 sitting at 4Ghz on 1.3 vcore atm with my 860 on a new asus maximus 3 formula... lowered the qpi too 3200 too increase stabilty, also allowed me to run lower volts on the cpu so a nice drop in temps

If anyone is using a P55-GD80, I recommend updating the BIOS if you're using stock 1.4. 1.4 isn't bad for an average user, but if you're going to OC, you're going to want a newer version. There's a bunch of little things that got tweaked, one of which is the vcore droop, which was broken in 1.4. I'm not sure if 1.5 fixed it, but it was obviously fixed in the 1.5b8 that K404 is using and it's fine in the 1.6b7 that I installed today. Made a world of difference coming from 1.4
I'm not doing anything hard with mine, testing it out at 3.6Ghz at the moment. That's good enough for me and I don't want to push the voltage much if I can help it because of the supposed Foxconn 1156 socket issue. (knock on wood)
If anyone else is planning to encode x264, here's some info.
These temperature statistics are in celsius, and were obatined using Gigabyte's own Easy Tune 6 Software.
The temperatures shown are during 100% load across all 8 logical cores, stressed using 1920 x 1080 x264 encodes.
3.62 GHZ (181x20), 1.152 Vcore - MAX Temp - 48 degrees
3.80 GHz (181x21), 1.232 Vcore - MAX Temp - 58 degrees
It seems that 3.6 is the sweet spot where temperatures stay fairly cool, and moving up to 3.8 GHz is only a 5% clock speed increase from 3.6, and through my tests yielded roughly the same speed increase during video encoding (4.8%), but at the cost of 10 degrees more heat.
Also, with HT on, the x264 encoding speed was roughly 15% faster during my tests. (as compared to having HT disabled.)
3.6 is good enough for me, but It's good to know 3.8 is still within safe limits, and I can use it if I really need to (which I usually won't).
FYI, coretemp, speedfan, realtemp, and cpuid all show different temperatures, so I chose to use the Gigabyte software for the tests, hoping that it'd be the most accurate, since they made my mobo.
One last FYI side note, compared to C2D (E8400) clock for clock, I usually get around 2.6x faster encoding speed with the i7 860.
The Gigabyte software is probably the least accurate. The only important temperature is the core temperature and both Core Temp 0.99.5 and RealTemp are able to read your core temperature correctly. I can't say the same about some of those other programs you tested. Speedfan seems to be the least accurate based on your screen shot. It doesn't seem to be using the correct TJMax which is written into each CPU.

Good to know. Coretemp and Realtemp read about 10 degs higher than the Gigabyte software, which is why I figured my 3.8 GHz load temps were about as high as I'd feel comfortable going.
Sarlock, so far your chip looks like a nice clocker! I have a chip on the way that is the same batch # as yours. Can you tell me what vcore your chip will need to do 4GHz please? Judging by your 3.8GHz run it should be under 1.3v which is pretty nice. :up:Quote:

On these new CPUs if you have C3/C6 enabled, your multiplier can be very dynamic based on load and can change hundreds of times a second. Old school software that samples your multiplier once per second is usually going to be wrong or I guess right for that one particular instance in time but doesn't do a good job of telling you what's really going on inside your CPU.
Run a single Super PI bench and take a screen shot about half way through it and I'll tell you what your multi is really up to and what these new tools are telling you.
An i7-870 has a default multiplier of 22. 3DMark06 came out long before these new CPUs so it doesn't report the turbo boost that is available.
With 3 or 4 cores active, an i7-870 can use a +2 turbo boost. Most CPUs only get a +1 turbo boost when all 4 cores are active so that's probably why Core Temp is assuming that you are only running at 23X.
If you enable C3/C6 then this CPU can also use a 27X multiplier when only a single core is in the active state and the other 3 are inactive in the C3/C6 state. When a second core becomes active, this will drop down to a maximum of 26 and when 3 or 4 cores are active, you'll be back at a maximum of 24X.
With C3/C6 enabled, this transitioning to and from different multipliers is happening internally hundreds of times a second. You need some modern software that decided to follow Intel's Turbo White Paper released in November 2008 to accurately determine the correct multiplier. The method is kind of complex so most software doesn't bother doing this correctly.

Another question, im having a hard time getting qpi 200 stable. I can make it screen stable but nothing more. Im running a P7P55 Deluxe mobo. Only voltage ive changed is vcore and imc voltage, running 1.3v on cpu and 1.175v on imc. What more should i change? How high can i push the vcore?
Ive disabled the speedstep and set the multi to x24 in bios.
Everything looks good. i7 Turbo reports that all 8 threads are using the 24.000 multiplier with no sagging issues.
RealTemp and CPU-Z agree.
You might have disabled Enhanced Intel SpeedStep (EIST) in the bios but i7 Turbo shows that it is still enabled. That's not uncommon. A lot of motherboards provide this option but it doesn't actually do anything. EIST is usually needed for turbo mode to operate correctly so leaving it enabled in the bios shouldn't make any difference on your computer. When EIST is enabled in the bios, just go into the Control Panel -> Power Options and set the Minimum processor state to a high number like 100% if you don't want your multiplier dropping down at idle.
Nice overclock so far at that voltage. Hopefully the other guys can help you get it higher.
The Intel datasheet for these CPUs lists the Absolute Maximum core voltage as 1.55 volts so you have lots of room to play yet as long as the temps are in control.

Oh and sorry unclewebb! I use coretemp because it has a LCDC plugin for my LCD on the front of my case. But I want you to know that I prefer realtemp. :D
So here is my retail 860 chip, which I think is nearly identical to the ES chip that Snowman has. At 4GHz it only took 1.23vcore for basic stability, but 1.32 to be stress test stable. :shrug:

Is there anyway I can increase the speed while maintaining same temps? It's hot where I live, and I'm already using the noctua heatsink with 2 fans. Tried reseating the heatsink. Also touched the heatsink'sfins, really warm so I guess they work!
I am trying out if increasing the PLL can help lower vcore.

It's stable (100passes Linx, 5gb problem size) at 22*160 = 3520Mhz with 1.2625Vcore and 1.15 VTT. 1mil SuperPi = 11.8s
Testing 22*180 = 3960 Mhz now at 1.275 vcore/1.19 vtt. RAM at 1440 though. Seems solid. 1mil SuperPi = 10.5s
I'm not sure but I think I need extra volts to push the RAM passed 1600, either than or more VTT for BCLK. My RAM is spec'd for 1.65 and I'm not afraid to push that further but I've read any more is dangerous for the CPU? Even the BIOS warns against using more than 1.64.
I will post pics shortly.
If my RAM is running under spec and not n being stressed should I not bother with such a large problem size? Or do larger problems better stress the CPU too?

I'll continue testing this setting overnight. LLC disabled, voltage jumps from around 1.264 idle to 1.296 full load. Seems stable though.
Temps feel a little bit high? Running Noctua U12P with Push/Pull. Prime95 temps peark around 10degrees lower.

At 3520 with 1.265vcore/1.15vtt the temps peak around low 70's which I can happily live with. These are my 24/7 settings so far.
Fortunately, nothing will ever get the CPU as hot as Linx if I chose to run at these volts/clock 24/7. I might even be able to lower them too.
Not sure what batch number sorry. Don't have the box around... I should have recorded it when I installed the noctua... :(
Your voltage for 3.96ghz is good, I just thought the temps for that vcore were a bit high. If it were my cpu, with temps in the mid to upper 80's c I would stay away from running 50 passes linx, just to be on the safe side. Just my opinion. Still a very nice oc, looks like you got a good chip.
I have been unhappy with my cpu, couldn't bench above 4.2ghz without it freezing, tonight I changed the timings on the mem, and was able to run some vantage at 4.25ghz. I have ocz 1600 cl8 mem and it freezes up at its rated speed when overclocking the cpu, but passes linx and blend at 1528mhz cl7. I am glad to find out it is the memory and not this cpu that I have been blaming and ready to get rid of. Will try and get some better ram and maybe enjoy this rig again.

Some vantage at 4.24ghz. I had a run at 4.35 yesterday but today cannot get it to finish the test again, today with the cards overclocked this is my best score so far. Hopefully with new ram I will be able to go higher

Has anyone been toying around with the CPU Clock drive?
I believe GB and ASUS motherboards have different defaults of 700mV and 900mV respectively.
On the p45 gigabyte board's the advanced clock control made a world of difference in maximum overclocking. Hard to find any detailed info for overclocking these p55 boards. Guess we are the guinea pigs for this platform.
I just did a bit of googling. I didn't 'reload optimized defaults' after my last bios flash. It puts up the CPU clock drive to 900mV.Quote:

Interestingly core3 idles higher but peaks lower than the rest of them. :s
dlc: on my 860 core0 runs about 5c higher than the others under load. I believe Unclewebb said unlike the 1336 i7's, these 1156 cpu's don't have the most accurate sensors, the first core seems to be the closest to being accurate. (Correct me if I am wrong Unclewebb)
Woke up early and took a drive to the nearest Micro Center to look for some better ram. Picked up a 2x2gb kit of Dominators. Set the timings to cl 7 and did a short linX run to test at 1900mhz. Meant to show SPD in the SS but I kind of fudged that up

You're right OC Nub. The Core i7-900 sensors are excellent and very consistent from one CPU to the next. The 1156 sensors seem more consumer grade and just aren't as consistent. For the majority of all Intel CPUs I've seen, core 0 is almost always the most accurate at full load. I sometimes wonder if Intel found a way to save a nickel by only calibrating the first core and then not worrying about the rest since they'll be close enough at TJMax. With Intel, who knows. Don't lose any sleep over your reported temperatures.

Any of you guys opened up Everest to check the power usage of the CPU at full load? I'm guessing the sensor aint 'that' great either.
Mine reported like 260watts at full load at 3520, surely that can't be right?
