MSI X58 Platinum thread

Haven't seen a thread for this board in this area, but I know a few people does have it. I think would be good to share some info about it.

I used to have a Q6600 and an Asus board (P5K Deluxe and later P5Q Deluxe - both awsome boards) and I'm stuck in some BIOS options in this MSI but I'm specially heat limited here because I'm using stock Intel cooling so far..

So far I'm at 190x20, I kick myself in the rear for not buying 1600 memory, I bought 1333 LL memory. Now that I know what is definitely 24hr prime small fft stable I can work on lowering the voltages some. I've had it at 200x20 but it gets like 3xx errors in memtest86 test 5 even with relaxed timings, I'm debating whether its worth it to pick up some of the fancy gskill 1600 pi memory and try to lock it in at 4ghz for 24/7 operation or settle for 3.8ghz, grrrr.

Great OC! I'm also using DDR3 1333 but my worry right now is that I'm using the stock cooling and the temps at load are just killing me.

Yeah my temps on the stock hsf where out of control really, with HT enabled at 3.4ghz it ran upwards of like 95c, DOH!! No doubt some good air cooling alone would work wonders.

Anyways I've dropped the vcore .2 since the prime run I posted and the temps are looking to be around 6-8C lower but I'm also running blend this time around.

I'm surprised there's not more information on this board out there than what there is, really a solid board for the money.

Maybe some other owners will chime in with their results.

EDIT: Have you figured out how to use the turbo boost function for the board, the manual says there is a sub menu in the bios once you enable turbo boost in the bios but I can't seem to find any way to do anything with it. Also not sure if you found it yet but a great feature is the bios reset button on the back panel. At first I was removing the battery to reset things, guess I should have read the manual a little first rather than jumping right into things.

Wow 217 is nice, maybe I'll try dropping the multiplier and see what mine will do on the bclock. I've had some issues trying to get mine to even boot on the low memory ratio setting and my memory won't go much more from where its at now, maybe I need to try changing the voltages a little more.

What kind of voltages did it take to get the bclock to 217, qpi only or did you have to change the NB & ICH voltages?

To enable Turbo mode you must set Intel EIST to auto but pay attention to the voltages and temps because it will increase ;)

Disable Intel EIST

I'll try to get the exact settings later, got her priming right now but off the top of my head some of the settings are:

qpi +.100
vdimm 1.64
vcore +.210 or .220 (is currently 1.392 while priming)

EIST disabled
Turboboost disabled


I'll get the real numbers after it finishes priming.

Even when I enabled turboboost I never see anything change but the thing I want is access to the turboboost settings sub menu in the bios. I see in the manual they show the sub page but for the life of me I can't figure out how to access the sub menu with the turboboost options.

I am @3900 with some simple settings I found on here or somewhere else online.

set mem to auto
fix PCIE@ 37.3
disable spread spectrum
enable EIST
disable c-state
enable turbo boost
set base clock to 195
set qpi to fullspeed
leave it at 4.8gt
vcore to .25~.30

That's it. Follow those instructions (in the link)and you will achieve the 3.9 ~ 4.1 ghz overclock.

I dropped the vcore .1 from my original ss and the temps dropped a decent amount as well, may be due to the thermal compound settling in as well.

Anyways here are my current settings, a ms paint masterpiece :D

EDIT: PS don't mind the dates on the prime run, I didn't set the time and date after a bios reset :)

I feel crazy for buying more memory but I couldn't take it, order some ddr3 1600, going to shoot for a 4ghz 24/7 rig.

The memory I have now works great, 8-8-8-19 at 762x2 (1524) but they simply hit a wall just a little before 1600 regardless of everything I've tried.

Anyways if I didn't get the memory now it would just bug me so I had to do it damnit.

I know, I bought my old one in there but now I don't have an International Card anymore :p:

Actually there's a local vendor selling this cooler but it's too expensive here, about 2x the price on sidewinder after dollar convertion, and I just expend the last bucks I had with a big HD Display. So.. I'll be stuck with this cooler for a while anyway.

Just tinkering around with recoding a video to compare my q9550 to my i7 920 using automkv, same video, same settings, one winner! :)

EDIT: Not sure if it made a difference in times or not but my q9550 did the encode on a faster raid array while the i7 was a single 7200rpm drive, may have slowed the i7 down a wee bit but maybe not by much.

My Gskill 1600 should be here tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to push her up to 4ghz for 24/7, very happy with the simplicity and stability of this board so far. The nb feels a little warmer than I would like but not so hot you can't hold your finger to it but it gets pretty toasty. May look into either adding a little more direct airflow around the nb area or possibly changing the chipset cooling altogether.

I'm having some issues now. Used to have 1 pair of 1333 value ram (rated 8-9-9-24 1.50v). Used to run them at 1360 8-8-8-24 @ 1.46v set on bios or at 1400 8-8-8-24 @ 1.48v. Both rock solid 5h+ prime stable.

Now I just got another pair of the same memory and system keeps crashing on Wondows, specially after some time under prime or 3D apps. Something related to the new integraded memory controller?

Well you may want to try reseting the bios completely with the little reset button on the back and redoing your bios settings to make sure something in the bios isn't causing the issue.

Also memtest86+ 2.11 proved to be reliable for quickly pointing out memory errors for me, test 5 was the one that would always error when I pushed my memory too far. http://www.memtest.org/

I reseted the bios like you said and it seems to be stable at 1.54v now. Using 2t though :(

Why dont you run 3x1Gb tri-channel?

I have some of those "cheapest you can find" RAMs also, pushed then to 1648 10-9-9-24 1T 1.58V :ROTF: Im yet to find weaker DDR3 sticks :ROTF:

Does triple-channel have some real advantage over dual-channel? I thought about using that way but I guessed would be better to use the extra 1GB because Vista loves RAM.

I'll try to push my memories too, but I don't know how much vDimm would be safe to use on them (1.65v? 1.7v?) :shrug:

It's easyer to clock RAM with just 1 stick per channel, thats why I would rather run 3Gb.

This sticks dont scale well with Volts, they max out around 1.6V, not worthed to push higher tan that. ;)

Boy, you were definetly right. I'm now using 3x1 and I'm back to 8-8-8-24 1T with only 1.48v. With 4x1 I needed 8-8-8-24 2T with 1.54v or it wouldn't even boot.

I'll see how high this babies can clock with to 1.65v on bios. For 24/7 I think I'll follow your advice and not go hier than 1.60v.

Could someone test performance of vista sleep mode on this board? How many seconds from power button to windows reappearing when resuming from S3 sleep mode. Thanks

My CPU stable at 200x21 (30 round IntelBurnTest passed)
For flash BIOS: creat USB boot (use HP Bootable USB Utility & Boot Files in The Guide of this thread). Copy AFUD4234 and BIOS to USB. Reboot your system and press F11 when the splash screen appears to select the boot menu, select USB stick. Then type this: AFUD4234 BIOSname (ex: AFUD4234 A7522IMS.127)

Thanks, but I just flashed straight from the USB using the BIOS option. I liked the new options and specially the part that displays the vcore set after you add that voltage.

Guys what am I doing wrong?? My first time with a i7 overclock and I can't get linpack stable at all. Using newest occt. Running msi x58 platinum and i7 920 with 3 gigs gskill ddr 3 1333 =. I am only going for 3.8ghz and am running all settings auto with v core @1.32 bluescreen with 2 secs of linpack What am I missing?? Thanks

It took me +0.220 QPI for that print and will be hard to reach something more but I'll go for it :yepp: :D

Where did you get this 3.1b1 bios? I just bought one of these openbox from the EGG(full retail package) for 150.00 and am testing it now. Also I have 965 but it wont let me run my clock multi over 24??

With multi 19x and more QPI voltage I manage to lower my vcore a lot:

But 4GHz on that board seems impossible to me (2h+ Prime stable).

For anyone interested I just cross flashed from BIOS v1.1 to v3.1 and everything is working great. I followed the steps listed earlier. BIOS v3.1 has many more controls vs the 1.1, it makes me wonder if the the original non-sli Platinum board is getting hung out to dry by MSI. Anyone heard anything new about UEFI for the MSI x58 boards?

I'm considering ordering an MSI platinum, but Vista S3 Sleep mode is an absolute requirement. Would somebody try putting
their mobo in sleep mode and see if it resumes properly? Be sure to test at a high BCLK, at least 195 or whatever your system will do.
Many mobos will do SM at around 170 BCLK, but not at full speed. Thanks!

Anyone knows what physically has changed from the Platitum to the Platinum SLI other than just adding the acronym "SLI" to it? I have the SLI version and I can't differentiate between the two...they look exactly identical in every phase and shape of form. What has changed?

I really think this was a marketing thing. I flashed my board (non-SLI one) with a bios from the SLI version and really there were no changes at all. Could run the same settings I used before. Shame I don't have two nVida cards to test it, but S3rv3r did flashed (see page 2) and sucessfully used two 295 boards with no problems.

Talking about beta bios, I send an email to the MSI support, and they sent me the link for their FTP area. I'd like to share with you and remember, test it for your own risk:

Yes, the Pro one. I discover that because on the first boot after I flashed the board, the MSI bios logo is showing "MSI Pro" and inside the bios had very few options compared to the other ones.

I'm also pretty much convinced the .4xx versions are for the MSI X58 Eclipse board.

As I said before, I could flash my board with both .1xx and .3xx versions and had no problems at all. But since I'm not using SLI I'm currently using the A7522IMS.134. I couldn't see any difference from the others versions nor new options on it an if they are testing so many bioses why we they don't release any new ones on their official website? :shrug:

Anyway, I'll keep testing it.

The link to the FTP works, but once I click on a BIOS file name, my screen is filled with garbage...

Try right-click on it and "Save link as...".

As I said before, I could flash my board with both .1xx and .3xx versions and had no problems at all. But since I'm not using SLI I'm currently using the A7522IMS.134. I couldn't see any difference from the others versions nor new options on it an if they are testing so many bioses why we they don't release any new ones on their official website? :shrug:

screwtech02 A Hardware reviewer site on the net (I forgot wich one it was I was reading theres so many) said he achieved better results with 12gb on the msi board than any of the other ocing x58 boards.

Yeah but... sorry to disapoint you screwtech02, but hum.. the black memory slots sucks for overclocking. On the blue ones (on triple channel, using 3x1GB) I can reach 1640 @ 1.55v but with 4 sticks (dual channel) it requires much more vdimm and I cannot oc much, so if I were you I would stick to 6GB, specially because I really think more than that is completelly unecessary (unless you use som special program that will actually use all that RAM).

This past two weeks has been hell here in São Paulo where I live.. temps around ~35ºC during the day and about ~30ºC at night. Impossible to try higher clocks than 3.9. I even disabled the HT to save some vcore. But what's most strange is that the North Briedge temp is always around 58~60ºC even with the 2x40mm fans I glued on top of the big copper heatpipe (the one over the NB).

I'm really planning to replace all the thermal paste from below the heatpipes and replace it with Artic Silver or some other. Useless to say that with that high temp on the NB I wont reach higher clocks.

I just bought this board and it is very nice , but the bios is a bit quirky. Sometimes when you add small amounts of voltage, unless you completely shut down and restart, the voltage won't set right , but that's nothing a few bios updates cannot fix. All and all for 219.00 it cannot be beat and it will do well over 4.0ghz. MSI seems to have done it right this time.

how your board working for you and wanted to tell you to use the 19x multipler this board likes it better and you can hit 3.9 ghz by setting you QPI to 1.70v

Nice, i'm still waitin to hear back from EK about the waterblocks, that, and i need a proc/mem also.... Gonna wait till later this summer to build it, hopefully the DO procs will drop in price, along with the DDR3... Got me a rockefish case to mod too, so my build is quite a bit far off....

Well.. I won't remember everything but, a few things I did wrote down:

vCore: 0.230+
vQPI: 0.220+
PLL: auto
PCIE@ 37.3
Disable spread spectrum
EIST disabled
C-state disabled
Turbo boost disabled
QPI: fullspeed
Leave it at 4.8gt

Anyway.. it was worthless. I remember it crashed just a few minutes after that screen shot. That was the closest to 4GHz stability ever with this board.

If you want to find the stability point on the range of 3.8~2.9Ghz, I suggest you use the 19x mult, and up the vQPI a lot, all up to about 0.230+. This also helps to save some vCore against the 20x mult.

My settings for 3.8Ghz are: vcore 0.080+, qpi 0.160+
For 3.9GHz: vcore 0.110+, qpi 0.220+
Both with HT off. With HT on it requires way much more vcore.
PS: This two settings are 20x Linx stable.

Honestly this 1.30 bios is the most crappy I have tested so far. It just freezes on POST under high overclock. Using the 1.34 beta for now.

How do I get the 21 multi to stick in 1.3 official using intel speedboost? This bios has more features than the last one I used. Im working on 24 hr settings, I have got the multi working but it backs off to 20 when at full load even with 1.5vcore so I know its not that and ram is 100 percent. :down: Im not going to test the 134beta right now so thats not an option.

Got my true so I had to retest everything and Im loving this heat sink so Ill be working on 21 turbo mode this week run wcg if it fails your not stable, I have ran linx and passed and Imo its better than prime 95 the only thing I DONT like is it unloads the core after a while (unless theres an option to keep it going and going?) I hope I dont have to reflash to get turbo back, Im pretty sure I havent topped out @3.8 to get higher is alot of vcore/ still testing but I think theres some things were not getting in the bios that are untested to many people are getting way high suicide shots so theres more ways to get there soon well all know, keep em comming.

Guys I just picked up a kit of OCZ gold ddr3 2000 and they are worth ddr 1600 with tight timmings:) anthing I tried after 1800 I had to use 2T well I have another years of testing since getting these new chips sooo I shalt be back:shakes::down::rofl::clap:

Oh bios 1.5beta1 is pretty good but if you go waaay to high unstable it can corrupt your bios and ask to reflash, just ignore it and hold the powerbutton down untill pc shuts off pulll power courd and reset cmos and the bios will be fine., first time it happend to me it scared me i thought for sure dead board.

Well Im going to test these stick as far as they go and they have some nice tight timmings and love volts also. Then im testing them with my old sticks for 12gbs well see the outcome when i get more free time but I shalst be back.
so far been running 88824 1.64v @762 3.8ghtz cpu IM going to bring them up to a full 1600 then move on to 1800 one thing I already know is they are fasst .

I have an OCZ Platinum 1600 kit and it is worth crap. It's not really compatible with MSI boards, as far as I can tell. I can't get it to work on Eclipse Plus at their claimed spec at all (1600). I went out and bought a Corsair kit (same speed) and it works flawlessly using the same setting. I am RMAing my kit to see if OCZ can send me a better/more compatible kit. Hope a new one is more compatible.

If you can return yours, do it. Get something else (different brand).

jcniest5 you are right these are a nice pain in the ass just like this mb!:up: you have to burn these three little bastard sticks in badly for them to work right I guess they just need some punishment. Well I was not expecting 2000 and Ill give them more time I still have a few weeks and if not Ill send em back. Seems like Im getting them worked in with upping my vcore a bit and backing off to 1.64 on them, been going for over 8hrs wcg so well see tommorrow around lunch time if there still crunchin. It is a paaain in the ass to get 20 passes out of these with Linx. If yours are knew you can try burning them in about 1.70 did wonders for my kit.

Has any of the OCZ boys had anything to say about these rams>? on here besides it being msi?

Sinister, they didn't say anything other than just issuing me an RM# to send them back. It seemed they got worse as I attempt to make them work. Right around the time I stopped trying, they couldn't even work at 1333 timing! That's horrible. I'm just gonna sell my kit when it gets back from RMA. Probably they may work better with a different brand of mobo. Obviously, not with MSI (particular my model).

People, I'd like everyones opinion on what is the best bios version to overclock this board (beta or not).

I've tested almost every bios released and in my opinion versions 1.27b and 1.34b are the best. The official bios usually are very crappy to overclock and keep the system very unstable including the lates 1.50.

well those settings were not stealth but I did pull 20 passes out of them at 762 the model I have are OCZ3G2000LV6GK I DO NOT like them as for now:up:.

IMO the 1.34b is the most stable with 19mulit and high clocks it seems to overvolt more or keep voltages on spec but I changed since I changed ram and Ill go back to it If i have to. I havent tried the 127 beta. Heres what Im testing right now 190cpu 180qpi 1.63v ram 777-25 HPET is enabled and I wish I could know if this little setting is helping me or now but It seems to help. Ill be testing some more at a different ratio soon to pull some more out of these ram I better get at least 1600 out of them. :up:

Well I decided to give both sets together a shot and 12gbs is a go on this board simple simon BUT for some reason I had to insert one stick at time and then cmos would accept. I was able to boot 10-10-10-28 1T still testing, just wanted to see what would happen:up: just in case Im stuck with 12gbs for now and no action on these ocz.

Well I got this mb totally stable server stillie:D sorry bout the small dam imaged from photobucket but I cant figure out how to get em bigger. Multi 21 turbo boost at 3,9 ish so stable you can play donkey KONG while primen the primer.:)

I will be back with some more screenies with just the OCZ ram running alot higher than this with 6gbs. When I popped In both kits I just fell in love and had resent for not getting 2 6b kits cause 12 gbs matters my friends, especially with vista:cool:. 12gbs is the way to go so I might just keep the low ram speed just to enjoy 12gbs since I wont be buying any more ram for now. Pretty good for non DO cpu for 24-7. Alot of time took to get this dam board running 24-7 I can grid all day and run benchies @ 4 ghhts but full stability takes alot more time.

Ok, let me re-phrase that, any chance on getting a 920 & 12gb stable at 3.8/1600?? Any input on voltages/uncore/skews??? It seems to run fine 3.8/1200, but there is much better bandwidth to be had @1600. While at 1600 and doing a everest bandwidt test, it hard locks on the level 3 cache 2nd test. I have tried lower/higher voltages, to no avail, am i missing something???

I dont think your missing much, my ram has a sweet spot @tras 24 with both kits combined i have a handicap but you should most likey hit 1600 with those gskills, my board likes under 1.60v (with both kits)

on another note I havent tried the new bios 3.5 I believe, using only my ocz 2000 kit yet but when I have time Im going to see what they will do alone.

I think the trick with this board is to keep qpi under 1.70 :up: and DISABLE AUTO DISABLE DRAM/PCI setting in bios and lock @37.3.
There is more bandwith to be had and Im wanting more I will post screen when mine are fully stable @1500ish with both my ocz and kingston kits. I did pull 666-24 out of both kits @585 ish for 24-7.

Flashed my board to 3.5 last night. On a side note, it seems all of my ram issues went away when I installed win7 Ultimte. Currently @ 210bclk/19 multi, mem @ 841.9/ 8-8-8-21, 2n. Was not able to even get even near stable on Vista....

has anyone else put this board under Sub-Zero, got any settings ?

I tested this board with a W3540 and did quite well - see my results here got up to 5.1 ~ benchable

Niiice Ive been waiting for someone to freeze this board it looks good, where u going over 170 on qpi? Theres a new bios out been out for a while 3.6 i believe and it says more ram compat. so im gonna give that one a shot to see if I can get some bandwith out of thiese sticks or just the ocz.

I went for broke a few days ago and flashed mine to SLI with the v3.6 BIOS. I used AFUWIN440 for the flash...it was very easy. I was able to borrow another GTX275 for testing to verify. It works flawlessly. From 1.5 X-Fire version to 3.6 SLI version. Prime stable for 48 hours@ a mild o/c of 3GHz....(I did'nt need anymore than that for what I'm doing). The later BIOS adds a few entries that are not in the original X-Fire version. This has proven to be one stable board for me. I have not had one single hiccup since it was built in January and I use it every day.
