I have problem with that Cooler:
1. It's have too hard bracket and with all of four press stud/latch (sorry, I don't know properly name of it) mobo don't post - FF on the LED screen. With two of them, it's 100% ok.
2. Some problems with getting off this cooler from mobo. Radiator is very big, and around of the socket don't have a lot of free space.

could you explain it with some more detail?
so when you mount it with 2 screws it fits, when you mount it with 4 screws the board doesnt post? :confused:

when I use only 2 of them it's ok, but with all 4 my Blackops looks like banana and don't POST (only FF on LEDs)

hmmmm sounds like your pushing the mounting pins down too strong, either that, or there is something wrong with the mounting pins...
definately be very careful! when you push the pcb so hard it doesnt boot anymore you are close to breaking the board!

lets check with ocz, maybe theres a mounting guide or some tip or trick on how to mount it well :)

you can if you wish convert the heatsink to bolt down, i have not actually used the vendetta 2 but this guide should explain the basics of what is needed. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=32036

What you need to try to do is bolt the mounting brackets to the heatsink so they bend up the way not down, remove the pushpins and pick up 4x40mm 4mm pan head screws, 8 nylon washers, 4 4mm wingnuts and 4 springs. i know you can buy mounting kits for other sinks that convert to bolt thru and I know EK have a waterblock mounting kit available also that you could use. I actually built a kit up here from a local hardware store and it cost me less than $4 so it is not expensive if you know where to look. What I have suggested here is a short term fix, i will look into OCZ changing to a bolt down design and retro supply a bolt down kit.

Hmmm, this way is too long for me. I don't have time to play with this, when I'm testing motherboards. Two pushpins way is ok :up:

ryba, yeah, same here... shamino and most engineers here only use 2 pins as well :D
i use 4, but only since im watercooling and the hoses are pulling a lot on the block.

I have tried Big Typhoon 120 VX with mounting pins and this cooler workes fine on the Black Ops, now i saw the problem earlier in this thread with mounting pins and with the Thermaltake BT the board gets bendt, but not so much that it causes any problems.


Also, my modded Mach 2 workes fine too, it have used the standard assembling kit for 775.

ok, well i guess the problem with the push pin system is that its really hard to get it right, its easy to push in one pin too deep so then the pcb bends a lot...

I am using the Zalman CNPS-9700 HSF. Works pretty well but I had to slightly modify things to get it to fit.

There is a spring clip tab on the mounting bracket that is intended for use on an AM2 mount. The tab stuck out just far enough to bump into the mosfet cooler fins. I trimmed down the tab since I'm not using an AM2 proc. It's plastic and easy to shave down and once the tab is shortened the bracket fits.

The second thing I had to modify was the cooling fan on the NB. With the fan squared over the NB HS the NB fan interferes with the fins on the Zalman HSF. To work around that I am using one screw on the NB fan on the upper right corner. By rotating the fan down about 30 degrees the fan still blows across the NB but does not interfere with the fins on the Zalman cooler.

I have the 9700 as well, fits fine using the 775-only mount.

Sorry about the low quality pics but a webcam is the best I have out here at the moment. I may need to get the 775 only mount in the future, sounds like it is easier to use.

So here is the trimmed tab. I cut about 3mm off the tab.

The fan tilted down a little. Might even be helping the cooling a little since this is quaranteed to eliminate any overpressure situation.

With this mount and the NB fan tilted slightly down you can see that there is a tiny bit of bending on the Zalman. This is better than not tilting the fan b/c it was preventing me from fully seating the Zalman.

yeah, i was surprised about the two lever things for the amd socket when i mounted the new 9700 heatsink a few weeks ago, the 9700s i used at cellshock didnt have those multi brackets.

the 775 only bracket is the same as yours without those black lever things... so you can as well just saw/cut off those levers if you dont plan to mount it on an amd platform in future.

Hi guys, I'm liking my Blackops so far apart from one little niggle to date.

I see you have noted that with the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme oriented north/south it blocks DIMM1 but also when it is rotated 90° to east/west none of the supplied NB cooling solutions are workable.

The only way I could fit a fan was to scavenge a low profile one from a HDD cooler as the supplied fan is too high a profile to sit under the TU120e and even the low profile fan is a tight fit.

The NB block appears to be bolted on, is there a low profile option available anywhere or is making a custom one the only option?

hmmmm there is no low profile version, sorry... :(
we made the BloodRage cooling modular so the heatsink/waterblock can be completely removed if you want to replace it. unfortunately thats not possible on the BlackOps... what you could do, is remove the entire cooling solution and then unscrew the waterblock base with fins from the waterblock walls. its actually 2 seperate parts... if you remove the walls then you cant screw the nb block down though, unless you build some custom small hold down bow or mechanism to clip the nb block onto the chipset.

From your description I assume the fins are integral to the heatpipe and the threads for the retaining screws are in the walls of the block yes?

If this is indeed correct a simple "strap" type bracket shouldn't be hard to engineer, I'll look into it as an option.

The current setup is workable so I will weigh up whether the modification would be worth attempting.

Either that or start saving for the i7 upgrade which may require a secondary income at present pricing :D

Is there a diagram for that?

It sounds like an aftermarket northbridge water cooler block could be used. Something like this using bolts to hard mount the block over the heatpipes?

Im looking to WC the whole thing, Mosfets/NB/SB ect..
Im guessing this thing isnt generic with spacings ect as it has such a complex cooling system

I added some cpu waterblocks to the cooling compatibility list of the BlackOps, but chipset waterblock wise, no, sorry :)
Although the universal chipset waterblocks from DangerDen and Swiftech should fit since they have flexible mounting brackets :)

possibly, but i dont know who usually does those...
i think the spacing of the main row of the pwm is the same as on blackops and avenger, but im not 100% sure...
no its not the same, just very similar...

i can give you the meassurements if you want to, so you can contact some block makers and ask them to build a block for you :)
but i really dont think its necessary, the pwm doesnt get that hot, as long as there is some airflow it should be fine... and actually even without airflow it might be ok since the nb is watercooled i suppose, so then it cools the pwm via the heatpipe! that was the whole point of having the central copper base on the nb hooked up to the nb and sb via heatpipes :D

OCZ Vendetta 2, impressed by its performance. But clearance from the stock NB-fan is bad. (See the pictures.)
The problem with the Vendetta 2 and the NB-HSF is that the Vendetta covers both holes in the long side of the NB heathsink. I need one of them to screw on the NB heathsink fan.
I tried a Spire 40x40x20 mm fan SP04020S1H3 instead of the stock NB-fan, but the performance was far worse. About 8°C more at idle even though it covered a lot more of the NB-tub.

In August 2008 I started building my new box (see signature) with 4GB. (I moved the graphics card from the blue PCI-e slot to the red PCI-e slot.)
Despite the less than stellar positioning of the stock NB-fan, I eventually managed a stable overclock : EDIT2: FSB@440Mhz, CPU@3740Mhz (x8.5), and 4GB RAM@1760Mhz (x4).
(Well actually it seems stable to me with IntelBurnTest/Linpack, but I'm a noob. First proper attempt at a serious overclock.)

One of the last days of January 2009, I added another 4GB of the same memory. I'm having major trouble ever since getting things stable. EDIT1: With RAM at 1600Mhz, 1700Mhz, or 1780Mhz
I wanted to cool the NB better. So I turned the Vendetta 2 by 90°, but that hurt it's performance. About 5°C higher at idle. I tried this twice, thinking I didn't apply the cooling paste correctly. It also covered some of the memory slots now.
So first I want to replace the CPU cooler with another one which brings me better clearance so that I can properly fit the NB-fan.
Performance and noise level will have to be at least the same or better as the OCZ Vendetta 2.
I'm looking into getting either the Cooler Master V8 or Hyper Z600. But I want to know whether they provide enough clearance from the NB+HSF.

Can anyone confirm or deny this ?

Hi all,

I saw Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer in the compatible list and I'd just like to confirm there are no issues using this cooler when also using the included NB Fan, and also is memory slot 1 also usable with this cooler, thanks. :)

Anyone know if the Xigmatek Thor's Hammer would fit? I plan to use the included NB fan.

I think you'll need a bigger fan for "Thor's Hammer". :p

haha, Im so sorry Spork! I mean to use the included NB fan on the Northbridge ofcourse, and I was only wondering if the Hammer would fit even if I use the NB fan on the NB. For that matter Im wondering about all the heatsinks in the compatibility list, if they were tested with the fan attached to the NB, and what orientation were they tested with. This is very important, you cant just say it's compatible and leave the details out. For example, someone posted Core-Contact Freezer as compatible, and someone else on another thread complains that it is not. so if someone can please step up and help... It sure would save me some money by not having to buy more than 1 heatsink if the 1st one does not work.

With my TRUE I have it seated so the fan exhausts down, this allows the 120mm fan to be moved proud of the top of the TRUE to accommodate the NB fan, it doesn't fit with the TRUE in the other orientation (Exhausting to the rear) as the NB fan profile is too high and you can't seat the TRUE, it is the solution I settled on after my posts on page 1.

I don't know about the other coolers though, sorry.

Hello everyone!! About to purchase a blackops(with neweggs pricing ) for my old x3210. Does anyone know if the apogee gt water block will work on this board?

Has anyone else actually plugged in the 120mm fan that comes with the blackops? I put it in some spare drive bays for extra case airflow - it moves a lot of air BUT - holy crap that thing is LOUD. Have it running from mobo, not psu, so in BIOS used fan control to slow it down to %40, no louder than my other case fans now.
Next time my wife breaks the vacuum cleaner I know an alternative!

Ok, now I need to know if Prolimatech Megahalems will fit, I only want to mount it with the fan blowing to the back. are there any clearance issues?

I asked before but no one answered.
I'm interested in both mounting directions -- blowing out back and top.

It looks like if you mount it blowing out back, the heatsink won't work with that NB fan there.

I've confirmed a few things via email inquiry to prolimatech, what i'm worried about now though is... you notice the line of capacitors near the PWM.. Im worried I wont be able to even fit the mounting bracket there, but here's our email correspondence.

Update: I Finally got the megahalems in my hands now, and I'm broke. tried it with the fan blowing to the back, and it FIT like a glove. you will not be able to fit the blackops included NB fan though, but that's ok for me for now.

Pictures please?

Did you try mounting it blowing upwards? Does it fit with the NB fan? How much does it cover the RAM slots?

need to borrow camera. Havent tried mounting it with fan blowing upwards. But if you mount it with the fan blowing to the back using a 120mm x 25mm fan, I believe all ram slots are usable. I'll try mounting it with fan blowing up. i'll get pics when I can borrow a camera. But so far it looks like a good steal. I'll also get the chipset cooler just to see if I can fit it. :)

This picture is actually of my low profile HDD cooler fan mounted under the edge of the TRUE. There wasn't much clearance and the fan itself was next to useless cooling wise.

This picture is actually of my low profile HDD cooler fan mounted under the edge of the TRUE. There wasn't much clearance and the fan itself was next to useless cooling wise.

I've just ordered the Thermalright HR-05 IFX SLI Northbridge Heatsink so I'll let you know whether it fits or not.

I'm hoping it will fit on top of the heatpipe plate once the Water/Dice pot is removed (see pic 3) and between the TRUE and the video card using the bolt on method as per Step 8 of the push pin installation guide on the page I linked to, if not I can always drop the video card down to the red PCIE slot.

It has been a while since it has had a cleanout I'll admit but it is also very dry and dusty where I live, it hasn't rained for months here so dust is everywhere.

I received the Thermalright HR-05 IFX SLI Northbridge Heatsink as ordered.

My original plan of having the cooler fins parallel to my vid card was sunk by the m/board holes - Thermalright bracket orientation, it just isn't possible, so I compromised, this involved changing the TRUE fan position to accomodate the NB heatsink. (see pics)

As per my earlier posts I had my 120mm True fan in the "suck" orientation blowing toward the bottom of the case, it is now still in the suck orientation but exhausting toward my psu fan (improved airflow :shrug: :up: :shocked: ) at the top of the case.

It eventuated that my case could not support my vid card length if I tried to use the red PCIE slot, it just wouldn't fit (it's pretty tight in the top slot) so I decided to rotate the NB cooler 90°C from its originally proposed position

All seems good so far with around a 5°C drop in NB temp.


EDIT: I have yet to place an 80mm fan on the NB heatsink so more to be gained yet I suppose :D

2nd edit: Do not be scared of the heatpipes, they're quite malleable (within reason)

Will you reorientate your TRUE now so the fan blows out the back of the case?
With that big ugly block removed from the NB I'd imagine you would now have the clearanve to do so - could you confirm this please?
ps, I just ordered a Megahalems CPU cooler, It is very similar dimensions to the TRUE, and also a 60mm fan to replace my kaput NB one. Will be very interested in seeing your NB temps once you have a fan the cooler, I may have to copy your setup.

I didn't reorientate the True because the NB cooler didn't allow enough room for a push setup with the True fan and a pull setup would have (nearly) had my cpu fan and rear exhaust fan touching but not aligned (spindle centres).

Another reason is the fact that I find the cooler is more efficient this way.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to trying a fan on the NB cooler as my new Asus Rampage Extreme / Dominator 1866Mhz parts are due any day now.

My Megahalems arrived today and I put it on after work. Temps are WAY cooler than the stock POS cooler managed. My ram has high heat sinks, so east-west orientation is out. I stuck it on north - south (standard way) and not only does it fit, but it could mount a pair of 38mm fans in push - pull!
The 60mm fan I got to replace my dead NB fan is slightly too thick for the screws to mount it, and it would conflict with the Megahalems. Zip ties are a wonderful thing, and the heat pipes are a handy mounting point. :D
NB temps down by 20c with fsb (still) @ 1333. Have CPU @ 1.4v, 3837MHz at the moment, cool (mid 40's @ load but not prime stable yet. Will try a bit more juice...

3837MHz (333 x 11.5) "prime stable" 7 1/2 hours @ 1.400 vcore.
4000 MHz (333 X 12) @ 1.4375 fails prime under 30 seconds, but manages vantage, hot cpu, games...
I'm pretty happy with 3875 - approx %55 OC 24/7, and 4000 for benchmarking... but I'd be even happier with 4000+ 24/7 stable and 4??? for bench...
Only had this rig for a few weeks or four, and a bit of a OCing n00b, so hopefully can get there with some more tweaking...
Any recommended settings I could try? My RAM doesn't like going much above 1333(1:4 - 333), even with higher latencies and volts (9-9-9-924 / 2.10v) -7/7/7/20 @ 1.801 at the moment, (1333) seems to work. :D
