Corsair HX1000 announced

I hope they use a decent fan this time. Loved the HX series so far, quietest PSU in town. But they did have awful problems with QA, I got like 3 out of 10 with a defective (noisy) fan :(

Well, not neccessarily. If this is made by CWT (like the TX750) and uses a 140mm fan (again like the TX750), it will probably be the same one. Being a Yate Loon D14-BH. That's a ball-bearing 140mm fan running a full 2800 (!) rpm at 12V. In the TX750, they run that thing at around 4V starting, so it's never under 900rpm which is quite annoying.
But since this PSU clearly isn't supposed to be silent - unlike the TX - I guess it's ok... won't have any defective fans at least.

This platform doesn't really compare easily to the TX750 though... it'll take a fair bit more load to get that fan up to full speed. While the TX750 is based on the CWT PSH line, this one's based on the PUC units like the one I'm running in my main rig. It should compare more easily to its cousin in the Thermaltake Toughpower 1kW.

Are you sure it's 4V? Did you get that number of SPCR or measure it yourself? That's quite low for a fan like that to even start spinning. Typical is about 6V.

I got the fan info by tearing apart 2 TX750 units and removing the fan. Looked it up on yateloon.com and could hardly believe the specs. Voltage was measured by me, I think it was even less than 4V - 3,87 or something if I remember correctly. Sound/airflow levels also matched those of a 140mm fan running at ~900.

The smaller HX also start at such a low voltage, see SPCR.com - nearly every medium and high speed fan can safely start at ~4V so it's not that uncommon. I even have 1000rpm 120mm fans that start at 3,5V... Coolteks :O

I'm not doubting that fans can start that low. I have Globe 138MM fans that start with 3V. It's just not common and I didn't think the fan controller inside the Corsair started the fan at such low voltage. Usually the fans just twitch and never spin. I've got friends at Corsair that I can just ask to confirm though. Thanks.

While doing that, could you ask them why in god's name they used a 2800 rpm fan for the TX750? This PSU would be just great if it weren't for an oversized fan... the D14-BM would have been just fine at half the BH's rpm.
Oh and it's also a pain in the ass to swap fans... you need to solder a matching 5W resistor in parallel (56ohms in my case) so that the stupid PSU won't shut itself down after two seconds...

I've seen problems with modular units first hand, and experienced some of them. It's a silly risk to take and I've never had problems hiding the extra cables.

I've learned my lessons on a couple things in the PC world, modular PSU's being one of them.

I'll just avoid the headache completely.

Well, some of the earlier modular supplies have been pretty rotten, like the early OCZ units. The new corsair and Ultra X3 are wonders though. It can make a big difference in small cases, and it just makes the OCD inside me feel better :p

Hey Guys, I have the 620HX PS. I don't plan to do SLI or anything hard-core. My graphic card is gona be most likely the 9600GT, would you guys recommend me taking a look at this power supply. I am building a new rig and I rather have more power then be sorry later.

So does this mean that Nvidia is slightly relaxing the standards for their three-way SLI certification? In Anandtech's interview with PCP&C, they stated that their 860W Turbo-cool was fully capable of running a tri-SLI rig, but that Nvidia refused to allow certification for anything under 1100W.

Actually, Tagan was. That's why all of the ESA test machines you see doing the rounds at other sites have Tagan 1100W power supplies in them.

Maybe? Hopefully? I can confirm that 1100W was a minimum requirement when the platform first launched. But 1000W is certainly adequate if you're running 3 way, even on a quad FX rig.

I just got worked up about the TX750 so much because it cost me a lot of nerve... I bought a few of these units believing Corsair's noise-per-watt diagram that was on their page for the TX... that said something about below 20dBA unti 400W load or so.
I buy these units, and what I get is close to 30 rather than 20. I bet that's why Corsair won't ever send a TX SPCR's way cause they'd tear it to shreds, no matter how well it can handle high loads :D

your customers would have real problems in my computer room then. even more so sitting next to my antec 900:D and god knows what they would do when i cranked up crysis on my secondary rig with an overclocked 2900pro:D

i have had customers the same way and most seem very happy with 2x120s, CPU fan, GPU fan and PSU fan. but it varies form person to person.

back on topic thats one good looking psu! i love my 2 Corsair Vx550 and if this can do 1000watts with the same quality i will be more than happy.

Anyway, I did manage to build that Tri SLI rig that is very quiet when watching movies (you guys would call it inaudible I bet :ROTF: ) by putting 800€ into wc equipment, using dual PSUs and running a water temp of ~45C - the 8800's don't care and customers are happy :cool:

But let's get BTT now...

As said already, it should be fairly similar, much like with the Tough Power 750W and Corsair TX-750 using the same CWT platform.

There are some really good 1KW units now, TT Tough Power 1KW, CM Real Power Pro 1KW, Antec TP Quattro 1KW, PCP&C TC 1KW, Silverstone Olympia 1KW and soon the Corsair HX-1000. :up:

Looks like a huge PSU. 150x86x200

40A on both rails too, sounds nice.

I like it. If I needed something this powerful I'd probably buy it. I'll stick with my Antec 850 for now.

And so it is. My HX620 is so quiet, that when I ran it with passiv comp(used to test one P3/FX5200 and so on rig) then I pressed power button and thought:"****, computer is dead, is it mobo or cpu or ram" and then picture came to LCD. I was quite shocked.:D

I just confirmed something about the Corsair TX750. Besides the case and the cable out arrangment, it is actually identical design to Xigmateks 750W.

I suspect this 1000W will be the same, I guess we will find out when it is available.

It was bought from a store and is an excellent product.

i don't know how many of you guys read about the corsair factory tour we did last year. Those guys are simply amazing the way everything is being run, the quality of testing process and tools they use plus some very interesting info they have us about testing their PSU

have a look at the blue oven in the PSU room >> they rate them at much higher temperatures than their competitors. All in all i am cetain that whatever PSU you pickup from Corsair you are not making a bad decision

they test competitors products in there

lot of the competitor offerings fail the tests (not talking about any in particular here)

JG and others probably know more about this than others >> lot of manufacturers will "relax" the testing to fit their products in a higher category = easier to sell. Good example is PCP&C 750W PSU and Seasonic X900 900W PSUs. Same PSUs >> one rated with looser than other yet they are exact same PSUs eek

temp testing, fan speeds and other considerations are very important in testing PSUs among other things and you can "play" with figures to get the rating you want sorta thing

from my understanding Corsair don't do that....they stick to very tough parameter testing for example using that blue oven to test the PSUs at 50C or whatever the figure was i can't exactly remember now.
I think one of their competitors using the same OEM in 1kW PSU is rating theirs as 1.2kW hehehe >> you get my point right

Yes people will play with rating temperatures to move up and down the derating curve but if you are casting that stone at Thermaltake it is rated at the same 50c.

I am not dumping on Crosair, Indeed I actually admire their quality thats why I am so happy when I found out TX750 is actually Xigmatek's 750W model.
I also found out what the Corsair 1000Watt is about, and is good stuff.

Even if the drop were as large as you imply the only place that the voltage actually matters is at the end of the connector (and that is where the specification is written to measure it). So as long as it is in specification there it doesn't matter. So the argument is a non-starter.

Right. It's an argument that can go round and round. The resistance introduced by the additional connector is only responsible for less than 1% difference in load regulation even at full load. It's simply a non-issue.

And even the corrosion argument is a moot point. If the potential for corrosion is at the modular connector, then guess what? It's also there at the other end of the cable. Yeah, you have two corrosion points instead of one but then you enter a whole other argument.. why are you using your PC outside on the end of a pier? ;)

sigh...I saw I search, then the buying, then i like it ALOT, then studying.
