Gigabyte DS3 o/c'ing problems - post HERE !!!

I've decided to make a new topic, about this great / shi.t.ty MB...
Some people, including me, are unable to change anything in the MIT section in bios - when sth changed, the pc turns on and reboots just beore the memtest in POST and then goes to previous settings
Changing any V doesn't help, changing PCIe to 100 either...
This is not bios-dependant problem...

What is my point... Some folks o/c their CPUs quite high on this MB, so there must be sth which this MB doesn't like... Pleas anyone write detailed config here, so that we could find any similarities and, hopefully, find a solution.

I'll try to switch components in my PC starting with a GPU and mem, but my friends is away so i'll do it in 3-4 days...

I guess if i post that my setup works that may help too.

Mobo: Gigabyte DS3 bios F1 and now using F3.
Cpu: Allendale E6500 stepping 4 b0
Mem: 2 x 512mb generic micron d9.
gpu: connect3d x1800xt

psu: coolermaster realpower 550watt.
pci cards: sata card and hda digital x-mystique.
hard-drives: loads :D

Wont go over 400fsb though.

8 x 400 works.

It's not a problem of high fsb, it's a problem of changing it at all :(

why? it works at stock speeds.
and in poland i cannot take it back to the store if it's working and it's only that i don't like it... (i bought it in a store, not an online one...)

I have this problem and it's driving me insane. And yes, I WILL take it back even if it runs stock. I can't complain about a cpu that doesn't overclock, but a motherboard that supports overclocking right on the front of the box better do just that.

I am so fed up with this piece of crap it's not even funny. I tried it with a celeron D and guess what...wouldnt boot at 134x19...1mhz over stock. I hate this board with all hatred I've saved up over the years!

Icing on the cake is that MANY MANY MANY people's boards are soaring over 400fsb, while mine crashes if I even add .1v to the ddr. What the hell is going on here?

one thing have you guys messed with ur ram voltage
not sure if u try and that resets also
not sure if thats ne1s prob
most ram is rated at 2~2.1v and i think this board sometimes boots @1.8v

hope u can figure it out even if you end up having to test other parts gl guys

i think that at 265 x 2 Mhz for ram it should at least boot then hang... or maybe no... damn ;/
anyway i did try setting higher V at first, then changing fsb...

what is more it's not only a problem of fsb! we can't change PCIe speed also... :|

Here is what I did, but I don't know which of these fixed it!!!!

Left PCI-E at auto.

*UNINSTALLED EASYTUNE 5! I think that may have been the cause for all this. Uninstall it. Reboot. Then shut down and reboot again. This did not start working until I rebooted twice.

Honestly, I have no idea why the hell it works now. It's not stable at 400x8, but that's ram I'm sure. I can't believe this. Please try it and post back. PM me if you wish or hit me up on AIM.

OK found it...I'll make a separate post after.

DISABLE "LEGACY USB STORAGE DETECT" located in Integrated Peripherals. That's all there is too it. I'm cruising at 400fsb no issues.

I can go to 495 with only +0.1 vmch stable but the temp. is bit high for me (60+ idle), If I get my water cooling back maybe I will use this for 24/7 and 475x7 (no vmod, all normal volts) for 24/7 with no problem at all (58-59 idle), been up for 1 week. If you ask me is this mobo any good? to me this MOBO rocks with cheap price and with solid performance :clap: .

but the only problem I found is WHY THE HELL MY DVD BURNER BECOME ALOT SLOWER jez....:slapass: strange isn't? when I'm in burning mode it's normal, burn 1x dvd 4 Gb data for 11-12 minutes on 4x speed,
only the read speed is so slow... I've tried change to diff. pc to see is this hardware failure? and the result is good same as before so that could means the only problem is within the driver issues :nono: .

btw my dvd burner is Pioneer A109.

maybe you should change the topic to the GOOD and the BAD of DS3, it is more suitable for the discussion as for the bad can't go along without the good thing :banana: .

in which slots do u have ram in? 1&3?

Check your ram CAS setting with cpuz.
Both sets of memory I have (G-skill ZX and Corsair) default to CAS 3, they should be 4 and 5.
After I manually set the timing I can OC with no problems.

when it was on auto the MB set it to 5-5-5-15 so it's a proper 'by SPD' setting

i'll try 2morrow to take a new board from the shop or sth... we'll see if it's a problem of this particular one or the whole series...

guess i'm in this same category of not being able to OC a single Mhz...

glad to hear tha ninja made it out of the vicious cycle whereas myself is still very much in it. i've tried all ninja's and john's method (except the change of gfx cos i don't have a spare) but to no avail.

Guys, its 99% likely that its your graphics card causing it... i couldnt o.c a single mhz with my old 6800GT but with an x1300 pro im at 400 fsb so far

i also cant go futher 450x7. i'm using DS4.. and when i read this thread regarding gfx, i tried to oc my ati card but it just hang. i guess my card has problem with this board :(

I dont think your gfx is what is limiting your o/c... what happened to me was that i could not even enable cpu or pci-e clock control without it resetting the cmos settings

I think it has something to do with that some video cards are not compatible with some undocumented pci-e bus acceleration the DS3 does when you enable cpu clock control

i've just confirmed that there is some incompatibilty between ds4 and 7600GT. i changed to an ati x550 and the board works like charm...

now i'm in a dilemma whether to change the gfx or to rma the board...

oic. i already uninstalled driver, cleaned the registry and install the latest driver from ATi website.. but still cant use the overdrive function. I dunno why.

I cant get any stability past 450 either, was stuck at 430 until yesterday although dont ask me what settings I changed to hit 450. We should get a thread going with everyones bios settings and get to the bottom of this random stuff. Saying that, by the time we do they'll have released a magical perfect bios that fixes everything..? :D

450 is good i reckon... i cant get more than 400 because my ram is limiting me :mad:

Take a look what at your chipset. It might be so that yours is manufactured at different plant

Maybe we should ask Gigabyte to fix this issue.

I still think its a motherboard bios issue as disabling USB totally removes the problem. It is odd though its not effecting most users.

I just hope everyone with the problem has reported it to Gigabyte using the online form.

Just a thought, have you got "Init Display First" set to PEG as opposed to the default PCI? as illustrated here

Hey guys about this video card thing. I have an interesting note to share.

I'm currently stuck at 430fsb and tried for 48 hours stragiht this weekend to get past it and no matter how many volts i add it won't budge. One thing i noticed is that sometimes...especially on higher failed clocks when after saving settings to bios when the machine posts my monitor will say "can not display this input' or something like that.

Most times it flips back on when windows is about finished loading or if i'm in bios and a few times it just stays blank. What i've had to do is toggle through my monitor inputs and go back to DVI then it's instanly picked up.

I've tried PEG and PCI with the same random results. Thoughts?

The o/cing problems are not the same...
we've got 2 categories:
1. no o/c at all
2. can't get more than xxxMhz...

the 1st one are people who cannot change pcie bus speed, or cannot change fsb with even 1Mhz...

the 2nd are people whos MBs are just crappy, or they have set sth wrong in bios...

ASAIK the problem of NO o/c at all can be fixed with a different VGA

the problem of being stuck at some xxxMhz with this USB sth setting in bios and ofc adding Volts, and... making the chipset colder!

Ok, I guess I'm adding myself to this list...in a strange way.

My setup:
E6300 (OEM from TD, Scythe Mine) and OCZ EL Gold 2x1 GB 5-5-5-12 2.0 volts in slots 1 and 3, ATI X1800XT, and PCI SB X-Fi Platinum (only PCI card).

My story:

Ok, here goes. When I first got the baord all set up, I ahd a hell of a time booting because of the ram being severely undervolted. Eventually I was stable enough to boot into BIOS using just a single stick of ram and disconnecting everything else but my processor and video card. Upped the ram by .2 volts, added everything else, and installed Windows using the F1 bios. Upgraded to the F3 BIOS (in F1, my CPU was reported in BIOS at 7x66 MHz...F3 fixed this). First tried OCing to 300 MHz FSB, booted no problem and was easily Prime stable. Bumped this to 320, ran dual SP2004 and got an error in one core after about 3 hours. Kind of dissappointed, I decided to run prime again, and this time was stable overnight. Figured something jsut got messed up, so I went back into BIOS, and booted at 400 MHz FSB (1:1 FSB:RAM) and was prime stable for 3 hours before I stopped it.

It wasn't until the next day that I decided to try gaming at these speeds. First time I loaded up CS:S, the computer locked up as soon as it was finished loading the level and getting me in-game. Strange, considering it went 3+ hours dual Prime. So I try Half-Life 2 (same engine, I know), and I get an error loading the game from Steam (don't remember the exact error). None of this happens at stock speeds when I reboot.

So, I decided to see if a little extra voltage would fix the problem. Back to BIOS, I upped the CPU voltage to the next setting (1.375 volts I believe), F10 to save it and exit. Posts fine, but now when I get to the Windows loading screen, it locks up after about 3 cycles of the little blue bar. Strange indeed. It does this consistently, about 5 times. I decided that it seemed to be something related to the HD since it didn't happen until Windows was loading, so I shut down and change my SATA drives from the orange (ICH8-controlled) ports 0 and 1 to Gigabyte's own controller (GSATA0 and GSATA1). Windows now loads without any hitch (but back at stock Vcore as I changed that after the first lockup).

So, back to BIOS to try the overclock. Set the FSB to 400, RAM still at 800, F10 and bam. PC won't even post. The videocard fan and CPU fan are running full-bore, but no video at all. The HD activity light almost makes it look like stuff isloading regularly, but no video and the full-bore fan (normally quiet). Shut down, pull the power cord and wait a few minutes, start up and the clock is reset to 1.86 Ghz and everything runs fine.

How strange is this? I've tried disabling bunches of different thigns but I'm getting tired of it. Updated BIOS to F4C to no avail. My temps with Prime at 2.8 Ghz were low - 32 C idle, 48 C full load.

Any ideas?

I have called Gigabyte on this, I told them my specs, and they are ordering my exact parts to assemble my exact pc to run testing for this. When they find a solution (custom bios) they will contact/send me it.

I have SO totally lost my faith in Gigabyte. But what is the alternative - the Asus Pwhatever the heck it is. Everything I"m reading about that board says its a train wreck with bodies spread over a 100 mile radius.

i'd like to post my findings that i made today...hope it'll help...

1. i'm still using the 7600gt to OC and to my surprise, when i switched it from DVI to vga output, the OC CAN be done. this may prove that probably my gfx actually have problem.

2. i'm able to OC using single channel of ram and not dual channel ie. using only 1 stick. i've ran dual channel to OC and it worked before, but somehow or rather, now only 1 stick will work with OC. both rams passed memtest. my opinion would be might be the value select ram is a bit too crappy to the board's liking.

3. try not to plug in USB mouse. my board is able to OC without USB mouse. Ps2 mouse will do just fine. this also applies to keyboard.

4. when i OC with all the above conditions, the enabling of usb legacy support doesn't really come into play. i guess it's not affecting mine.

that's all that i've found out for today. i'm still not OC-ing my board cos no PS2 mouse. btw, i'm getting another replacement gfx and hope to post more findings.

what RAM you got? Try +.3vdimm. I had the same problem

Hi guys. I have been having problems too over the weekend with:

E6300
DS3
2x1gb G.Skill PC2-5400 LA
ATI X1800XT

I wanted to post here about it, but i could not as i did not recieve an activation email :(

My system would overclock to 2.1GHz (300x7) with everything at default and 100% stable. Any furthur then i would experience blue screens in windows after some time like this:

I tried so many things, disabled everything in the bios and tried bios settings like people here..0.3v added to vdimm didn't do anything nor did the 0.1to the mch,pci-e etc...still the blue screens.

And what is weird as well, my ram would only work in slots 2 and 4 of the DS3. When i put my ram into slots 1 and 3 the pc and its fans would cycle on and off like what i have heard on here with the NR memory.

Eventually, i RMA'd the board and i'm about to RMA the memory but i'm not sure if i need to RMA the memory as i know someone who used this.

Can anyone tell me if my ram is ok? or will i have to RMA it. Im not sure if the PC2-5400 LA Gskill is compatible with the DS3 although i could run dual channel 2048MB in slots 2 and 4 100% stable.

Weird, mushkin ddr2 6400 ds3 e6400 combo, i manually set timings in bios with f4c flashed to 5-5-5-12 and they come up as 3-5-5-9 every time in cpu-z,i adjust them with memset 965p back to 5-5-5-15 hoping to get more than 325 FSB............ however, it seems 325 is the max for me???? i have EIST and all that throttle crap disabled, yet no luck at all? not even using a PCI-E GFX card...i tried lowering the MULTI to 6 or 7...doesn't matter, i can't get over 325 fsb, and it seems like it has something to do with timings being overidden. It also helped by putting my 2 sticks in RAM slots 1 and 3 , whereas 2 and 4 wouldn't allow 1mhz overclock. weird :banana::banana::banana::banana: man

Mine doesn't budge a inch if I enable clocks. I get a beep and it shuts down.

screw this trash mobo, i'm taking it back.

my board will not post if i set PCI-E to 100 in bios from AUTO.... is this a normal bug? I'm using a regular PCI card.. nothing even in the slot. i'm pretty sure this is what's messing up my O/C, seems how i tried raising all voltages very high, and im still stuck at 325 with easytune/setFSB HOWEVER, i cannot OC 1MHZ in BIOS!!!!

it's not mem related, it's this pci-e thing, even though im not even ON a pci-e card

vintage, try pulling out all your USB stuff...
plug in only the most basic connections, PS2 keyboard and vga cable (not dvi)

report back your findings...

I already did, heh i tried disabling the entire usb in bios...nothing works! I thought the problem was remedied by replacing the PCI-E card with a regular PCI one..however, mine remains, YES i cleared CMOS, YES, i tried ALL bios versions, nothing works!

If I have to do that just to get this motherboard to overclock then I will just get a different one to replace it. Both my $70 Logitech G7 mouse and G15 keyboard won't work even if I used a adapter to plug in the PS2 ports. Also why would put a slow as hell pci card to replace my $550+ pci-e 7950GX2 just get it to overclock. :rolleyes: The motherboard worked fine when I had my Presler 920D in it but not this E6400. I figured out my problem. I now need better memory as it reverts the memory to 3,5,5,5,15 even though I set it to 5,5,5,15. I wasn't putting any clocks in the bios at all and I just set the memory to auto. I am thinking about getting these 2 memory manufactures. Or is there better?

Hi folks, found this thread in my search for an answer to the problem I have with my DS3, but it appears that I am in the same boat. :(

You can add me to the list of the users unable to overclock their DS3 at all, well not from the bios anyway, can overclock using Easytune but would rather not use a software solution to do it since Easytune appears to have enough bugs itself.

Been through Gigabytes email support but got enough canned responses to open a can factory even when pointing out this thread.

Anyone know why I cant do Cas 5 1:1 on my DS3 :confused:

If I set it at cas 5 bios it reads it sets it as Cas 3, which is why I cant get past 3.85Ghz (using Cas 4). If I could do Cas 5 I think 4Ghz easy as my mem is pretty stable @ 515Mhz doing Cas 5.

I cant change it in MemSet either as it just crashes.

I have manually set Cas Latency to 5 in bios. As you can see it actually sets it to Cas 3, which is preventing me doing 500+ fsb.

Here's a question to those that haven't been able to OC at all - which SATA ports are you using? The GSATA (controlled by the JMicron controller) or the orange ones (controlled by the ICH8 Intel southbridge)?

When I use the ICH8-controlled ports, I can successfully overclock in BIOS but lock up about 3 cycles (of the little blue thing) through in the XP loading screen (this began when I first tried to up my Vcore). When I use the GSATA (Jmicron) ports, I can't overclock at all.

Could someone else just try this out? When using the orange ports I can boot into safe mode, but as soon as my keyboard's numlock light comes on the XP loading screen just freezes. I don't really feel like reformatting but I would if that's what I need to do to fix the problem.

the CL3 display is a bug, it is not actually CL3

It still appears to me there's a bug with the cas latency on F4c. When I use the 4:5 ratio I can get my memory stable at ~460Mhz. However, when I leave all the settings exactly the same, but change the ratio to 1:1 the system won't even load windows. Can't think of anything else it could be really :confused:

to you guys, there must be sth your MB doesn't like. in 99% cases it's gpu or ram... i dunno what else... i did even try to o/c my without drives, without anything in PCI and so on... and the problem was solved only by another vga card...

It is CL3, when using 4:5 I can do CL5 & my mem does over 515fsb.

When using CL5 1:1 it sets it as CL3 & they wont go past 470/480fsb!

It does NOT change the RAM timings! How many times do we have to go over this? I'm sorry, but this has been discussed to death. CPU-Z cannot read timings at all correctly on the DS3.
