Yes, the Z7S lets you adjust the CPU multiplier. I used 6x mult for testing max FSB for instance, and if you can go down with ordinary Xeons, you surely can go up with a QX.Quote:

Note: I don't have those rubber cushions installed on the left slot. That's impossible. It won't fit with the clip. It will however work like jcool, in his first post. Now I guess the choice is :\ Which one do i follow?
I get the itch that since I don't have 'real' standoffs, and the backplate is my only option, that I am NOT suppose to use the clips, and i am suppose to use the rubber cushions w/ backplate only.
Comments as to how i should mount this?
Depends how high your motherboard sits from the case standoffs.
If you can fit the spring clip with the back plate I believe that is the proper way to do it.

So get rid of the backplates, how are you gonna get the EK mounting screws through them? That's right, you aren't.
Try to mount with the spring clip, if that doesn't work install without anything. Works fine too (that's the way an EK supreme is mounted normally on any mobo, without any backplate)
Just don't tighten it too much, but it doesn't need high force anyway. Never made a difference for me, slight pressure is enough,

The EK Supreme does not fit. There is a stock heatsink in the way. The waterblock sticks out over the heatsink about a good ~0.5-0.75cm.

If I point ALL the screws away, I can barley manage to squeeze it down. It gets more difficult to push down as i get closer to the CPU. I was hoping for an easy slide so that I could properly apply pressure when I installed the CPU with the thermal paste on.
So..what to do? :\

Okay so I used a dremel (I love the dremel >_<) with a metal shaving tool and I shaved off some of the metal. Here are the results. For future ASUS Z7S WS users who use EK Supreme waterblocks, in order to fit all the water blocks correctly, you need to remove about as much metal as I did. the whole process took about 45 mins.

Left block: Had to make the curve on the left a little deeper to compensate for the NB heatsink.
Right block: Removed just enough for a perfect fit. As you can see, it really isn't that much to shave off.
Well done! I do think modding the left one can be circumvented by using another NB heatsink like the Ötzi, or using another mounting for the HR-05 though...

Btw.. i put about half a thumbnails worth of Thermal Paste. is that too much? As I was pressing down on the block, I saw the thermal paste spread evenly, and it squeezed out about 1-2mm over the edge of the IHS. maybe I put too much?

In comparison to Jcools first post and pictures, i am like 2C over his CPU temps, and 8C over for MB and memory temp. I have water cooling going on O_O, the OCZ memory cooler and the HR-05/IFX for NB. Duno why my stuff is so hot.
Is this too hot?? this is without OCing and just idle in BIOS.

I stepped the clock to 400.
And I see my DIMM temps at:
DIMM_00: 52C
DIMM_10: 54C
DIMM_20: 53C
DIMM_30: 51C
The CPU temps are all the same, in OC. Remember these are ALL not under load and no OS has been installed. Not yet.
Also after stepping my Clock to 400. I went to System Information and looked at memory information and my mems are reported as DDR 667. The Cruicials i got are indeed DDR-800. Do i need to use a special program to see the correct reflected 800? I know a few other people had this similar question, but i was wondering if their numbers changed after changing the clock.
Your temps are fine. Don't give a damn about idle temps anyway, load temps is what it's all about.
FBdimms are allowed to reach at least 90C so no worries. Keep NB under 60 and CPU below 70 realtemp/80 coretemp and that's it.
I hit close to these values after weeks of boinc at ~32 ambient on CPU and NB, so don't worry. This stuff is meant to run hot.

milkmandan, the setup looks great. Question, the bios shows your memory as DDR2-667. Does that mean you're overclocking your memory from 667 to 800?

I might have to tear this set up apart and re do it. Rad might not have been cleaned properly. Thermal Paste might be too much. and I need more fans on my rad. wont know for sure until i put this system underload.

Maybe the board when it detects a QX CPU installed points the bios to a different table which allows vCore adjustments? Similar to how the Foxconn bios was giving different ACPI tables for different OS's?
I wouldnt know how to look into fooling the bios that our CPU's were QX's but it might be worth a look.

Tested yesterday the board with 2 qx9775 and the last bios available
Using qx9775 it unlock vcore option to 1,6 but I think the bios is no perfectly compatiible with the QX cpu because if I change the vcore valu from "auto" o any other value, afther i reboot the bios automatically set the vcore value on 1,6 volt and it shows jsut 2 option: "auto" and "1,6" volt.
If I set again on "auto" afther reboot I can see again all the option available from "auto" to "1,6"

Looks like this board needs some more bios work, as we all know. Maybe they'll enable Vcore on all CPUs, maybe we'll be able to make a mod bios for it.

Yeh, Asus support is so bad. Normally, it goes like this: I ask a question. Then, support guy says "Hmm, that's interesting. Let me type that into Google and see what we get." One time, the support guy "knew" the answer. I asked "What happens if I lower the FSB?". Support guy confidently replies, "Then the processor will run at the same GHZ speed but with a lower FSB". I think, to get any real help, we need to bypass the support guys and communicate directly with the engineers.Quote:

Need those dimensions from evap mounts (if never needed) and i found place where one of my friends works and he could run some waterblocks with cnc from cu :)
So good reasons why need those dimensions, ordering those blocks is possible when i get first ones made!

edit - running WCG @ 3.4, 62-64 on most cores with two reporting in at 66 and 67c with roughly 23c ambient. Thats using coretemp btw, realtemp reports about 10c lower.

First of all the actual Vmod for this board is very complicated due to the fact that it is the only Asus boards using a digital VRM chip. This chip is capable of 3 different tables of voltage as you can see from the link to the PDF of the chip itself. As you read about the properties of this chip you will see that to actually change the table from a VRM10 table to a VRM 9 table can be done by an inline 50ohm resistors to the Vcore leg of the chip, or the resistor located off to the left of the chip itself. Now for the hard part, as you can see from the tables of the VRM 10 and VRM 9 there are digital codes (1’s and 0’s). You now need to rework what your 1’s & 0’s are. Example ….0-1-0-1-0-1 was 1.6v, but now on the VRM 9 table 0-1-0-1-0-1 actually adds up to a different voltage now 1.575v, and as you can see the last column has been dropped. Now you need the bios update that recreates the 1’s and 0’s table. Bios version Z7SWS0718.This bios is very hard to find for it was written for us by Asus. It is out there if you look for it. Finally there are to resistors to be swapped out to a 20k and a 40klocated to the bottom left hand corner of the VRM chip itself. I believe it is swapping the 56.6 to the 40k and the 26.2 to the 20k. I would imagine, even without the QX9775, (a Xeon substitute that isn't godly expensive), with (2) 4870x2 in X-fire this would still produce some sick bench results.
We have not tried it with anything but Qx9775's but this mod does work. It is the only way anyone is going to get more than 1.6v out of this board because of the Digital VRM. Or should I say 1.54v after Vdroop. By the way this mod gets rid of all Vdroop too. Its not rocket science doing this mod, just read the PDF and it explains it all.

So are you saying that with QX's the vcore is adjustable up to 1.6v? Sorry if this was confirmed earlier, I haven't been following too closely. This means that the mod you're talking about allows voltages above 1.6v? If you still have the board and access to Xeons then it would be greatly appreciated if you could confirm the use of this mod on them.

Well, no one here intends to use QX9775's on this mobo. We care about crunching not benching (at least not in this section), hence this mod will be useless if it doesn't work with normal Xeons.Quote:

Your not going to unlock a DIGITAL VRM CHIP GUYS. You have to add the 50 ohm resistor to change the VRM10 table to a VRM9 table. READ THE .PDF latsed in my first post. This is the only motherboard with a digitalVRM dhip that we know of and believe me it took 5 months working with Asus to get this far. If you want voltage this is the way your going to get it, unless you feed it in from an outside point which you will need to do so from more than one spot. We have pursuded all options and are just trying to help out you guys looking for voltage. THIS IS HOW YOUR GOING TO GET IT. Doesn't matter what chip you have tyour not going to "trick" the bios. IT'S DIGITAL, the hole voltage table is made up of 1's and 0's and that you can only change through the process we mentioned before. I will list the PDF again for you all.

Talked with Asus last night in Taiwan. They said the only way to obtain higher voltage is by the two methods I've already explained. I did ask about adding voltage from an out side source and they commented that it would have to be added in 8 different spots on the board at the same time with a diode on each spot to avoid voltage going backward on the board. I guess I will let a sleeping dog lie if you all are looking for some other type of vmod. But keep in mind that the way we told you is the correct way to do it, and that is always the best way.

I have a problem with the ASUS z7s.
i have 4 hdds in sata and i have 2 dvd burners. thats all 6 sata slots on this board
i am trying to install vista, but i have 2 of the hdds in raid. can i can't seem to get the board to pick up the dvd burners.

the only way to get it to pick up is if i change storage configuration to AHCI and if i do that, i lose RAID. O_O
how do i get it so i can do both? or am i screwed?

You were screwed the moment you decided to use Vista, but that's a separate issue.
The last 2 ports need to have the AHCI/RAID drivers installed to be useable or something.. dont have my manual handy but its in there.

All of them are SATA, so it fits perfectly. 1+2+3 = 6. Just enough ports.
Here is my problem, the ASUS Z7S mobo will not pick up ANY DVD drive and will not boot to the Windows Install if I don't have "storage configuration" set to AHCI.
I have 3 options in the storage configuration...IDE...RAID...AHCI.
- In IDE, only SATA Slots 0,1,2,3 get read. Which is pointless for me since I can't RAID and I can't use Slots 4 and 5.
- In RAID, all SATA Slots are supposedly used. But my DVD burners can't be booted from (can't install windows, I don't know if they are detected, BIOS reports it as 2xATAPI CD-ROM). I've put my burners in slots 2 and 3 and my Seagates in 3 and 4. And the computer sees the HDDs, but not the burners. I swapped the SATA slots of the HDDs and Burners, and it does the same. Sees ALL the HDDs, but no DVD.
- In AHCI, all drives are detected, all burners are detected as ATAPI CD-ROM and I can boot from the Windows DVD.
This is where I am stuck, I need to install windows, but I would like to be able set my extra 2 Seagates in RAID 0.
I've read the manual and it doesn't really help.
I've even created a RAID driver disk, and in AHCI mode, I get to the installation part where I can load driver, but they only recommend to me the AHCI driver. I could force to load the RAID driver, but how is that going to help, if I haven't set up the Raid Array in the BIOS?
What should I do?

I thought about doing the following, but haven't had time to test this out.
Set Storage Config to RAID, create the RAID 0 Array, reboot, go back to storage config and set to AHCI (I don't know that in doing this if it kills my RAID 0 Settings). Then boot to windows install and force load the RAID driver. PRAYING that maybe after doing that, Windows will pick up my RAID 0 Array as ONE HDD.
What do you guys think?

Does anyone here have any experience in loading windows with RAID 0, with DVD -Rom/burner that is SATA?
I wouldn't have this problem if i used a IDE DVD Burner, but i don't like IDE, cables are ugly and just not cool.
I suppose you could just use the IDE optical drive for the install and switch back to the SATA unit when you're up and running.
sounds just like my dq6, you'll have to use the ide drive to install windows and get your raid drivers installed before windows will pick it up. It's a PITA, but the only way i could find to do it.
Milkmandan. This is what I do/have done.
1) Intall onto IDE drive.
2) Also install Acronis Workstataion 9.
3) Set up Raid SATA disks and clone entire installation from IDE to SATA Raid. :) Works like a charm. CLone only takes about 30min.

so my PSU for the ASUS Z7S busted. After my format for a HDD, the whole PSU just shut down and now it wont power my mobo. I tried to attach it to another mobo and it wont even power that so my PSU is done.

Holy crap, does this CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX have enough pins for the ASUS Z7S? Doesn't the ASUS require 20+4pin, 8pin and 4pin?

To get the P4 (4 pin) connector just get a molex to 4-pin adaptor. Try to get one that uses 2 molexes.

If you switch to RAID mode and set up your Raid 0, you got the information written to the first few blocks of the HDDs. These will stay even if you switch back to IDE or AHCI, enabling the Raid 0 to come back into existence once you go back to Raid mode. However, you must not access the HDDs during install or after (meaning no formatting, just leave them alone). You will also see 2 physical HDDs as long as you are not in Raid mode, but once in Raid mode they will be.Quote:

I run IDE mode (I think), since I only got one SATA DVD connected to the mobo, the HDDs all run off the Adaptec controller...

The Corsair HX520 and 620 have all the needed power connectors (24 + 8 + 4), so why on earth would the 1000HX lack EPS capability?
Also you don't need 1000W unless you're planning on getting a 2nd 4870X2 ;)

Yeah, the BIOS still needs a little tweaking, but its not lost from all hope. As I am not sure if its ASUS fault or Intel's fault. Either way the Intel Matrix Storage Controller website said 'RAID' mode is the recommended mode, since it gives highest performance with best future compatibility for upgrades. The site says in RAID mode, AHCI is enabled along with RAID. :\ So it should work, but oh well. I got it working.Quote:

true according to newegg, CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 Power Supply does have EPS, but i think it only has 20+4pin and 4+4pin. O_O

I've heard excellent reviews and recommendations for this PSU, so for a little hassle for an adapter, I should be good. Unless the ASUS board doesn't like the adapter. -_-
And yes i do plan on getting a 2nd 4870x2 in the future, when its cheaper..One is fine for now.

I'm in the process of starting up a Z7S rig for the first time tonight and... nothing. Fans spin up, the diagnosis card shows FF for the code, no beeps (buzzer seems to be missing from it's location on the board, so who knows), and no video. I'm going to start the usual drill of troubleshooting power supply, power connections, cards and CPU's being seated correctly, resetting the RTC, etc., but I wanted to throw this out in case anyone's got past experience with these symptoms.

The case was purchased open box, but was in excellent condition with all the parts bags sealed.
