ok the big question is does the SB even need cooling?
I think the stock cooling is adequate. The problem would be if you want to WC the NB (or change any one of the three heatsinks). You would have to replace the upper left PWM HS and the SB HS. HR-05 SLI will most likely fit...I believe that was covered on the last page...
ugh I'm an idiot meant to say that I can't get stable at 3.6 with a chip that does 4.0 on water and 3.8 on air. Now I managed to get 3.6 on air but no further. Perhaps vdroop mod is needed.
the stock cooling is not adequate in my eyes.
I already have a mosfet cool and a water block for the NB. my only issue is the SB. I don't think the HR-05 SLI will fit with my setup it will block removal of the second pci-express card and mounting it the other way it won't clear the ram. http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/i...05-sli-asm.jpg
my only bet seems to be the EnzoTech CNB-S1L One-Piece Forged Copper Southbridge Cooler. Thank you for answering the question about the Evercool VC-RE VGA/Chipset Cooler.
Somewhat unrelated to overclocking, but the onboard audio chops like crazy for me...and my mouse slows down when this happens...I went googling and it seems like the P5B had pretty awful onboard sound support too. Oh well, good thing I was planning on installing my SB Live but still I can hardly believe the sound is this choppy (already ran through a bunch of possible settings and drivers and whatnot...happens pretty much no matter what lol).
Tekdemon - I had heard about that too but my on board sound is awesome so far. I had thrown my Audigy in there and it sounded like a piece of crap compared to the on board, even through a power amp. I would keep exploring how to fix the on board.
What did you change in the bios yet? Did you test it out at stock settings? Maybe some other device or driver causing conflict? I ask partly because I want to keep it working.
My overclock. I will stress it over night. vcore 1.55v vdimm 2.25v Nb 1.5v. These same setts with same vcore would run 43c under full load with my last 4 motherbaords but on the p5k the temp sky rockets to 65c cant figure that out. water cooled chilled to 12c.
@ Safan80
The enzotech CNB-S1L looks like it will fit.
There's also one by Alpha that's even lower.
here @ frozen cpu
Sorry if this is a little off topic but does the non deluxe version of this board (ASUS P5K LGA 775) support penryn like the deluxe?
Yes
I didn't have the heart to tell him ;) Honestly, there are only a few people with these boards and even fewer who can actually give you the answer (and I'm definitely not one of them). I messed with the reference voltages last week briefly but could not tell you any discernable differences they made. Most of the voltages can be left at minimum until you really start cranking and then it's really a matter of trial and error...I leave the references on auto. I just got mine back up and running (thought it was dead) and I'm on air so realisticly I won't need to experiment again till I go back to phase...
I'll be putting my system together this weekend. I was planning on giving Vista 64 a try, but I'd read that some of the testing apps out there don't work in Vista 64. Would it be recommended that I start out with a 32-bit OS for the hardware shakedown and then once I've got it stable where I want it, install the Vista 64? Or just not worry about the couple of apps that don't run in the Vista 64?
Eva2000 thanks sooo much for this thread, it has helped me oc my chip in record time. :bows:
You mentioned that you dont know what the reference settings are for but I noticed you've been playing around with CPU PLL. Did it make a difference with your overclocks? Has made none to mine so far.
I previously had a Gigabyte DS4 and could never get my chip truly stable @ 3600, couldn't even boot at 400*8 with a 4:5 divider. With this board I've stabilized my oc with these settings in no time! Awesome board!! Only downside is that my temps are 5c higher than DS4 but thats a small price to pay. And alas no more :shoot: COLD BOOT issues. DS4 owners... go get this board.
have You any problems with 2gb sticks on p5kdlx? my friend bring me to test 4x2gb sticks ocz 6400 5-6-6-18 and even one in anyone slot no go :|. pc don't start. bios 0311. sticks on striker extreme works fine.
Hey I am having an issue with my Asus P5K Deluxe. I installed everything and it worked right at startup. I installed Vista Ultimate and a couple of other programs and played around for about 4 hours before I decided to flash the bios. I choose to use the asus updater that came on the provided disk and I choose the update from bios file on the pc option. Unfortunatly the program gave me an error stating that the epprom didn't complete flashing or something during the flashing process I was trying to install a firmware update to one of my optical drives and it gave me the blue screen of death. Now my computer will only power up for about 8 sec with all the indicator lights flashing before it shuts off again. I have tried clearing the cmos but that has had no effect that I could determine is there anything I can do?
for oc'ing or starters use winxp pro sp2 .. vista might not be as ready as most folks want it for at least for overclocking
made no diff 1.6v CPU PLL did help me push Q6600 max FSB from 470 to 485FSB with old 0307 bios but have yet to try 0311 bios max FSB for Q6600 i hear it helps a bit with 0311 in getting higher quad core FSB ?
try loosening the sub timings to 10-42-11-11-11-11 and up NB to 1.55v and try
ouch you have balls.. don't use asus windows update to update use afudos or bios ez flash 2 only.. for now probably only way is to rma your board
As to my testing on P5K Deluxe, I'm now testing 2x1GB OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC on P5K Deluxe with 0311 bios... so far very easy to handle tight sub timings on P5K Deluxe unlike on P5B Deluxe where this OCZ FlexXLC didn't like tight sub timings at all :D
I thought I killed mine last weekend...tore it down and was gonna return it. Decided to pull the battery and clear cmos and let it set for about 4 hours. Built it back up and voila! She's now back to life....worth a shot. Unplug, pull the battery and move the jumper. Let her set for as long as you can stand it. If that don't work then RMA...
I've had no problem with my Patriot Extreme 4gig 2x2gig sticks at 2.25V on Quad 6600
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/6...iotssi7.th.jpg
I got version 0.94 from their website:
http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/
The 0.94 link is right below 0.95
Is this like the Commando where it gotta reboot 3 times before the final reboot into the OS????
I hated the Commando for that & Asus!
Anyone tested 4x1024mb on this board, im still wating for mine but start thinking to return it before i even got it because 680i is good with 4 sticks. sry if someone already asked in this thred but im at wrk don't have that much time too read every post made:/
i read somewhere it handles mismatched memory very well.
Mine are a mix of Geil Ultra DDR2-1000 and DDR2-1160's running 4-4-4-12 DDR2 1000 right now. Still tinkering but getting them up and running was a matter of running full auto, popping them in and away she went. Both the P5K and the Deluxe have been very easy to work with thus far...very happy with this chipset.
And what gives you the impression that the SB cooling isn't adequate and that it's going to be what holds back your overclock? I haven't even seen anyone mention even upping the voltage to the SB at all for any overclock. I can't imagine it being hot enough to matter since the heatpipe assembly on my board is working rather well.
I interpreted it as him not being satisfied with the stock cooling in general and having parts to handle NB and mosfet. His inquiry about sb was asking if he needed any at all.
My heat pipes are working pretty well so far too, but it gets pretty warm around nb/cpu/ram and I'm eventually going to be trying it out with some other cooling just to see.
I dunno. I'm running 515Mhz FSB on mine with only 1.4v NB and stock SB and the NB and the rest of the heatpipe assembly don't hardly get more than warm. I don't even have direct cooling on the NB sink at the moment since I took out that extra 120mm fan I had mounted above my video card. Right now I just have a rear 120mm exhaust and two 120mm fans blowing down over the motherboard. My NB temp right now running small fft's is only 28C. Jumps up to low to mid 30's on large fft's.
4gb of Crucial running here; also no heat problems; doesn't even get warm at 460 fsb.
Just installed my other 2 gigs of RAM in this board a minute ago. Running 4x1GB of Crucial PC-8000 Ballistix Tracer now under Orthos Blend.
I have a DFI dark, I would be good for catching p5k dlx or for waiting for x38?
The mb temps can be deceiving my MB temps show 29-30C but I've got a couple of fans blowing over the pwms, they are really freakin hot. :yepp: q6600 8*450(3.6ghz) = a pwm Killer I believe . Anyone going to put heatsinks on the 8 voltage regs?
is there anyway to boot with this board with pc5300 ram? Without having the ability to change spd on another pc?
You can probably do 4-4-4-12 at DDR800 no problem with 4 sticks. I know these Tracers don't like 4-4-4-12 too well at the speeds I've been running them over 1000Mhz. I've got all four at 1030Mhz 5-5-5-15-6-30-6-6-6 1:1 at the moment with 2.2v. I might be able to get 4-4-4 with 2.35-2.4v at this speed. Not really worth it though.
Nah, after much testing it seems the only thing holding my Q6600 overclocking back is the CPU voltage/Heat. The P5K is running fine at 394FSB at 5:6. (I do have a 140mm fan blowing towards RAM/CPU/NB from under the DVDdrive bay)
I am very happy with the P5K - seems to have all the headroom you need for quadcore.
Of course ask me in summer ;)
Pretty much spot on...I'm running my Geils 2.4v 4-4-4-12 @ ddr1000...I paid top dollar for these things several months ago and they are rated at 2.4~2.45. They are actively cooled...I'll be damned if I run em' slower than rated ;) They die, they get replaced under lifetime warranty...
Will the 4 sticks of RAM run at 1T command rate? I remember when I built my current A64 system that people were saying for 4 sticks you had to use 2T, I didn't know if that applied here too.
Thanks for the previous reply Eva.
I can post w/ 1t cmd rate w/ 1:1 @ ddr 667 w/ 2x 1066 and 2x 1000 Crucail ballistix but its not stable and fails memtest rightaway, this was w/ pretty lose 5 5 5 15 timings @ 2.2V w/ the 0311 bios so w/out alot more volts or maybe even loser timings I doubt it will fly. this same memory works fine a 4 4 4 12 w/ 2.2V at DDR 1000 on the 2:3 raito.
I see that the 2T command curse on the P965 has been cured, that's very good news indeed.
When i raise the PCI-e MHZ the SATA drives are gone, anyway to get 125mhz on pci-e like the 680i????
Which ethernet port are you guys using? I assume it's better to use the Marvell since that one is listed as "PCI-e", and the other is just "PCI", but I haven't seen anything that tells you which one is the Marvell.
I got all the parts in now, I'll start cracking on it tomorrow morning. I've already noticed one thing I miss having, a power switch on the mobo, that sure made testing my current system a lot easier.
Not trying to be "right" bro, just curious ;) People on the Evga forums flipped out when one of the last bios releases disabled "link boost" by default. Some guys swore there was a difference but I've never seen it with my particular crop of hardware. Funny thing is you can adjust all this stuff manually and they all still wigged out like something was taken away from them :D
Are any of you guys running XP 64-bit on this board? I'm trying to find the latest HDA Audio bus driver and the one I've got now is for SP1 and after installing SP2 for XP 64-bit it wont' let me install it saying it's an old update. Now I'm trying to either reinstall or uninstall the SoundMAX driver software since I installed my X-Fi and during the uninstall in Add/Remove Programs it gives me an error saying The HDA Audio bus driver is required and not found.
never used 64bit OS so can't help ya there ... sorry
Q6600 @7x490FSB 1:1
OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC @490Mhz 4-4-4-9
Now I'm truly getting the hang of tweaking Asus P5K Deluxe with OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC memory. Below is probably one of the fastest single 32M runs at 1:1 for 7x490FSB 4-4-4-9 settings.
Note, Kentsfield B3 stepping cpus are clock for clock slower in single instance Super Pi benchmarks compared with Core 2 Duo dual core B2 stepping cpus.
Also, 0311 Official bios increased my Q6600 Kentsfield cpu's max FSB from 485FSB to 490FSB without needing to raise CPU PLL volts from 1.5v to 1.6v as I needed on 0307 beta bios. With 0311 official bios and my Q6600 I've managed to sometimes boot into memtest @7x500FSB but on exiting bios, it doesn't boot up and needs power reset to get back into bios. So still working at it but already an improvement over 0307 beta bios :)

Ran a pass of memtest and Priming blend now.
I'm getting insane CPU temps on this, I've remounted three times and still idling around 50-54C and loading in the low 70's. I have a scythe with 2x yate loon fans on it and it was cooling the chip awesome on my old setup. WTF is going on, I can't get past 3.6ghz because of the heat. Voltage is only 1.45v.
what are you using to read and compare temps on new and old setups? and what was the old setup ?
2x1GB OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC
CAS4 Performance
It seems testing OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC's CAS4 performance on Asus P5K Deluxe is about the same as on Asus P5B Deluxe, hitting a ceiling around 540Mhz 4-4-4x at 2.45v. But, the difference is that on Asus P5B Deluxe, it required very loose sub timings. On Asus P5K Deluxe it was totally different, I could run very very tight sub timings @540Mhz 4-4-4-9 2-25-2-2-8 at 2.45v and it really showed in the Everest Ultimate reported bandwidth and latency and also in single Super Pi 32M time for a quad core, Q6600 B3 cpu.

ooh thanks for the heads up :D
I hope whenI pick up my Q6600 in July, that I will be able to hit these clock speeds. 3.6 is very impressive.
8 Gig Mushkin 6400 (4-3-3 stuff) @ 475 FSB 1:1, 5-4-4-8, sub timings all auto.
RAM at stock 2.25 vDIMM (spent too much $$ to overvolt this stuff yet)
Transaction boost enabled with boost level 1.
Appears 24/7 stable with orthos blend in Vista 64 and under memtest. So far. Still needs more testing
http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=206505
vCore is 1.36 set in BIOS, 1.34 idle in Windows, 1.33/1.34 load in Windows.
Won't boot with CAS 4 no matter what I do. But hey, it's 8 gig of RAM, you can't have everything. Transaction boost helped. May get brave and up the volts a little to try for CAS 4 but I really don't see the point right now since I only care about what is stable, not benching for the sake of it.

Not bad for an old Q6600 B3 ES that couldn't get more than 400-425FSB on Asus P5B Deluxe, limited at 350FSB on Asus 680i Striker, limited at 345FSB on Intel D975X Bad Axe 1, and 350FSB on DFI ICFX3200 at 9x and 400FSB at 7x or 8x.
Good stuff... Both times I tried enabling transaction boost and went for +1 my machine hard locked and required cmos clear. Disabling is interesting and results in slacker latencies. Haven't had a chance to see how high I could go looser cuz I ran a few tests then wanted to see what would happen going the other way. Hardlock. No boot. Time for bed :) This is on my P5K by the way. I'll have to spend some quality time with the deluxe when I get back from vacation...
Oh and cograts Eva2000!!!
mmm, lovely memory results. Good to see things are tight again in the high fsb's. Good find too on 499 vs 500. I wonder if turning on transaction booster at 500 would result in same results at 499
Wish I could get Super Pi working right on Vista 64. :(
maybe your using too much vcore?
mine idles at 46C on each core and load is at 60C on each core with the stock cooler, but I'm only running it at 3.2Ghz at 1.30 vcore. I won't try for anything higher till I install my watercooling parts.
it works just fine for me.
Did you ever find out what CPU voltage reference does Eva? I see that you have it set to x0.63. Also, at what point did you find the need to up the south bridge voltage to 1.20v?
so revert back still on 97.42 here,... my Quake 4 crashed all the time with the latest driver so I reverted back... weird that a graphical driver can cause these issues you are having...
Did some testing on my max fsb using an x6800 cpu. On stock NB volts 500fsb max. 1.5v to north bridge gave me 320fsb. 1.7V gave me 330fsb. Than i put an mcw20-k water block on it with 10c chilled cooled....1.7v gave me 340 max fsb. Guess it needs more volts to scale any higher.
i take it you mean 520, 530, 540??
how about vfsb?
anyone have any luck on raising the pci-e frequency without the sata drives disapearing???
Was having all kinds of issues with this board, returned to my trusty old eVGA 680i, i love this board (680i) anyway i was getting BSOD's left and right, fresh install of windows, vista and XP both issues, prime95 would crash not even faile, even on stock settings, a buddy of mine working for intel's tech department told me to stay away from the P35, they said it is having so many issues, the chip is wrong in many ways, not in terms of OCing, anyway i didnt listen took a shot and it was a mistake so i returned the board, good luck to everyone else.
I'm sure you've had enough problems, but my research and experience on the p35, and p5k specifically, begs to differ. Sorry the system didn't work out for you. I'm now rocking away on Vista 64-bit OS too, and it's pretty nice w/ this board.
Bummer man, that's like the opposite of what I get though. My chip stays crazy cool since I don't need much volts to get pretty good oc. I have been pretty cowboy with the bios settings and this thing has rebounded from everything I threw at it. Never one BSOD yet either. Bad checksum error twice because I was too light on the vcore, but reset jumper for like 1 minute, reflash and it's golden.
In my experience so far this thing is the bomb and no squealing coils like the wack ass p965-s I sent back.
Thanks to Asus P5K Deluxe, my Q6600 B3 ES is in the running for this 32M low clock challenge...

My first post for the P5K-Deluxe here :D
I just bought this mobo yesturday but still waiting for the Ballistix 8500 arrival tomorrow hopefully.
I've read through the 24 pages in this thread thoroughly and I've a few questions for EVA2000 and a couple others:
1. I noticed that you didn't set the DRAM Static Read Control to Dissable like in your previous reviews but to AUTO instead, any benefit of setting it to AUTO over dissable?
2. As another guy who has mentioned, we noticed that you DIDN'T set the Transaction Booster to Enable and +1 but instead just leave it at AUTO. Is it becouse when you set it to Enable and +1 at such speed, the system will not BOOT or becomes unstable? Could this be a corresponding setting when you set the Dram Static Read Control to AUTO?
3. Regarding Asus Update Utility - Despite a # of people who has failed flashing the BIOS successfully for previous ASUS mobo, ie. P5B-Dlx, P5N-E, etc. using the Asus Update Utility, I personally DID NOT have any failure flashing history with Asus Update Utility with ALL Asus mobo I had. Take P5B-Dlx for example, when I got the board it was 0306 BIOS, an early bios, I used the NEWEST version of Asus Update Utility on my VISTA ULTIMATE 32BIT to flash the bios ONE BY ONE from 0306 to 1102 so that's a total # of 9 success BIOS flash. Of course I had to do the CMOS clear procedure everytime and make sure absolutely NO ANY OTHER PROGRAMS running in the background. So now I'd like to confirm if flashing the BIOS using Asus Update Utility on the P5K-Dlx is ok. About 10 pages back, a couple P5K-Dlx owners reported that they had no prob using Asus Update Utility. If you've personally tried the utility with success, please report back to me.
Lastly, Thanks EVA2000 for another AWSOME work on the FSB Strap topic. I thought the new P5K-D already resolved this issue as it's quite a major complain in the P965 generation. Apparently you get lower memory bandwidth at over 500fsb...I wonder how high you'd have to reach over 500fsb to be able to acheive the same or more MB than at 499.??!
Static read auto = better bandwidth when transaction booster auto as well ;)
I only used bios ez flash 2 on this board no probs from 0123 to 0304 beta to 0307 beta to 0311 official
I love this P5K Deluxe http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=147599

:D
Wicked thread... all credit to you guys, esp eva  ... can't wait to get my P5K-D!
eva... I just started having this blank screen problem when booting into windows also, but on my P5B-D. What did you increase to fix it? I think I was running something like 470ishx7 at the time (just having a play) and couldn't work out what to do to fix it, so ended up backing off.
Great to see some guys running these Q6600's on air with good success... that's my goal.
Asus probe mobo temps must be whacked. I turned on orthos blend and left for an hour. When I came back the alarm was going off and mobo temp read 191 C !!!! I did a restart and was in BIOS in less than 20 seconds. BIOS read 35 C. I was back in Windows in about 45 sconds and it now read 35 C. Something is whacked with that reading. Or was it actually 191 C ? I highly doubt it. I have a 110 CFM fan pointed right at the board.
Well my Q6600 is on water cooling not air ;)
With P5B Deluxe and Q6600 too high fsb results in reboots when i run quad systool 16M pi instead of blank screens... P5B couldn't get my Q6600 past 425FSB.
what cpu ? what bios and version of asus pc probe2 ??
Perhaps, I should add, what OS are you running??
It's very well software version / P5K-Dlx related or software version / OS related.
Take Intel TAT for example, I had the same version of that running on all other mobos except DFI Infinity P965-S becouse Intel TAT doesn't have an update or at least a working version to address to that mobo.
For anyone who has Asus Probe installed: Do you get the Asus At Service bug at startup and running in the background??
I personally had experienced this along with many others with Asus mobos, and it's directly related to Asus Probe if you had it installed. It doesn't matter if close the program or dissable it, the aacentre/ACPI service is still running. I finally gave up and uninstall it for good. However, I also need it to read temp, esp on the NB. For rest other readings, I can use a combination of Coretemp0.95/Speedfan newest version/perhaps the Asus AI suite as well for mem vol reading.
Could asus probe throttle your cpu:confused: ? Having throttling problems and want to know every available option to make sure its turned off in BIos and windows any help? Heres whats been happening, been running quadprime stable for 2hours at 3.65ghz 1.55v at around 80C (hot i know) then jumping into 3dmark and having terrible 20fps. If i do quadprime stock and jump into 3dmark 64fps, soo obviously i'm being throttled but cpuz shows the correct speed.. Could my 8800gts be doing the throttling, it has mild overclock from the factory (Foxconn).?

That is the reason why I don't buy used mobo's on ebay or anywhere else!
Damn "labs" you people run sometimes
