It is an E0. Now, I am running BIOS 1702 but instead of the stock Asus BIOSes I'm using a modded BIOS from Ket, got them from here.

My GTLrefs are set to .63 and .67, NB GTL at 6.3, VTT at 1.26v and vNB at 1.30v. PLL is at 1.5v.
RAM settings are going to vary as I'm running 4GB of Mushkin, but I have Static Read Control disabled, DRAM Read Training and OC Charger are set to Auto.
Common Performance Level is set to 10, doesn't want to POST with it lower than that above 500FSB.
All Pull-ins disabled, all clock skews set to Auto.

Keep in mind that I'm on water so my vCore requirement is already a little lower. Wolfdales don't seem to respond to GTL tweaking until much higher speeds so you can pretty much leave them alone.

My advice is to find a CPU speed you want, then try to match the RAM to it. I have Mushkin Ascent 1066 RAM but I run them at 1000 for the time being because 4.25GHz is a happy CPU speed at the moment. Running lower speeds can often help you run tighter timings, which can also help with speed. I'm not familiar with Dominators, so I can't really help you there.

thanks bro! my dominators doesnt want timings that are too tight, however, they do run up to 1200+ without further tweaking and high vdimm... tested to be stable at 2.1~2.2vdimm for ddr1200 5-5-5-15 2t with all other subtimings set at auto...

update:
prime95 blend just failed 2hrs 22mins... i guess i'll have to up the vnb and check if the length of time before an error is detected will be longer than 2hrs 22mins...

settings as follows: 1.337ish vcore 1.32 idle 1.328 load llc enabled, 8.5x500, strap 333 1:1 ddr 1001, vnb 1.3, fsb term 1.3, pll 1.52, vdimm 2.1 all others in auto...

That you loose ya current settings, that's all mate, my last board had 0803 on the 2nd chip which was one of my fav biosses for this board. You are living nearby then (30mins drive)

finally after so many different settings! i stuck with 1406, its been stable for about 5 hours now, will continue but i think its stable :]

I think I've posted my issue many many times over the past 2-3 months (even made a topic) and I haven't really gotten any further than where I was before. I have a P5Q Pro (I know it's a deluxe thread) with an E8400, G.Skill DRR2-1000 memory and 4850. I've been experiencing the weirdest kind of phenomenons with this board, more than I've ever experienced myself. This board is extremely frustrating. My goal is to hit 450FSB, so I can achieve a nice mild 4GHZ for 24/7, but I just can't get there no matter what. I've found that symptoms occur more often, which scale only when the FSB is increased. Ram speeds and timings don't change a thing, and the issues still occur when bringing the multi down to 6x to rule out the CPU. I have also ran Prime 95 on all 3 stress settings for 1-2 hours with no errors. In fact, I have never gotten any errors once before. The actual components aren't having any trouble, but something else is. For instance, Increasing stuff like VTT and NB will help the symptoms fade, but doesn't get rid of them. I've tinkered with all of the settings and tried different combinations, and even kets bios, older bioses, and this new 2002 bios.

Anyways, the symptoms range from Random Bsods, restarts, lockups, and soft crashes to desktop. But no errors in Prime 95 and memtest, weird? The higher FSB, the more gradually they happen. When I play TF2 and CSS, when it shows the packet loss and choke by typing in net_graph 3, I get a choke of about 50-70. Backing off the FSB to 400 was the only thing that did anything, but I was still getting about 30-40. At stock speeds, there's no choke. So the network card can't handle the packets?

To give you a visual problem of when this happens, 450 fsb looks like this no matter what voltages I use http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6581/wtfn.png

And at 430 everything returns to normal, but I still will get lockups and on the rare occasion, programs that fail. It could be the PSU, or maybe a failing HDD, but I don't know for sure. I was told that the clock skews are most likely the problem, but Auto/normal/100-500 does nothing, so there must be some setting that is being increased linear to the FSB, and I have not found it yet. Could any of you possibly know at all what could be causing this? I just wish this were a simple problem with stress test errors and it just being a matter of tinkering with voltages, but I guess it's not :( It could just be a messed up board that's been causing me grief this whole time, and I really don't want to RMA as I could just put it in my old case with an E4400, and buy a UD3P, as I heard it was really good, but money is kinda tight, so I thought I should just give it one last shot. Thanks.

Have you tried increasing southbridge voltage? What happens if you set it to 451 or 449FSB? What power supply are you using?

I've been using Auto/1.2 usually so I tried increasing it to 1.3 and 1.4, did nothing. I then tried 449FSB and couldn't get into vista but 444 I was able to, but really, really unstable, CCC errored on startup and the bootup sound was off. My mouse was also at the top left side of the screen when it got to the desktop (vs being in the center as always).

as for your choke, how are your rates set?

I don't know, I think it's cl_cmdrate and updaterate 66 or 100 or something, and i think rate is 30000, but regardless of that it only happens above 400 fsb which I find is really odd.

Nevermind, i'm just gonna fork out $150 on a UD3P instead cause I can always just put the P5Q in my older system with an E4400. I actually wanted to get a UD3R or P but I had problems with past Gigabyte boards so I choose not to cause of that. I should've read some reviews before anything. Guess ignorance can cost money sometimes :(

a little update on mine. passed 8 hours of prime blend on the same settings. ran ibt on max stress and failed instantly. used 1/2 stress and it passed 10 loops. dunno whats up

IBT is more cpu based then prime blend... if the CPU surivives eg 2 hours of Prime Custom test (20 -20K) then you are fine... IBT stresses far too hard then any day to day app... if you want to increase Vcore be my guest... just try the setup with ya daily applications... if you get crashes, tweak the CPU GTL's and Vcore...

no crashes at all. screw it im declaring stable. lmao

That's the spirit ! I see no point in tweaking any further if you don't have any issue at all with ya daily apps... my rigs usually are on 24/7 and when I'm not on it they fold at 100% ( CPU and GPU at 70%) haven't had any bad WU's yet... yet IBT tends to cap out sometimes...

hi! Need help in ocing my e8400 to 8.5x500. Im using this settings:

It passes 1h hour Orthos Blend, 1h Orthos Small ffts, 1h OCCT and 15 linx rounds. Seems like everything is good, but in games, like GTA4, system crashes sometimes - voice freezing and picture distorting, only reset helps in this situation. I think the issue is coming from NB or FSB, but i dont know what to do. I dont want to rise my vNB anymore because its already too high. What you guys can advice?
p.s. im using 1805 bios.

i want to upgrade to a second 4870 but afaik P45 limits CF scaling due to a lack of bandwith

is anyone out there who tried to overclock the pcie bus for better CF scaling?

it should be possible but is there a risk of hard-drive corruption or sound issues and how high can i go without the risk of sata controller problems?

@ lexus232 Try the CPU PLL a tad higher, maybe 1.54 to 1.56v. Also what Performance Level are you using? Maybe try 8 to 9 if on a divider, 10 if running 1:1. May need to adjust GTL for the NB, perhaps the CPU GTL's as well.

That memory voltage of 2.1 may be a bit high, 2.1v in the Deluxe board gives an actual of about 2.18v on the earlier bios anyhow. Not sure on your bios version.

im using PL 10 and running 1:1. I tried to rise NB GTL a bit (tried all settins between 0.58 and 0.61), but then system fails in tests. If i set nb gtl to 0.7, system even dont want to boot. What cpu gtl setting you can recommend?

try the nb gtl at .625 or .620

every time i completely turn off my rig including shutting off power to the power supply all my bios settings are lost.

luckily i can reload from the 2 oc profiles, but this is a big problem as you can imagine.

i've tried replacing the cmos battery but that didn't help. even variefied that the old and new batteries still had juice with a multi-meter. the original battery actually had more voltage still left to it. either way neither seemed to be the problem.

any ideas what might be causing this? i've had this board for about a year now.

when i first got it one of the bios chips seemed to be corrupted or faulty. it was the main chip actually, not the backup. every time i'd cold boot it'd want to recover the bios from the second chip, so what i did was hot swapped the two and that problem was solved...sorta. i would be SOL if i got a bad flash, but no more recovering every boot.

that's the only other thing i can think of that's remotely related to my current problem.

anyone have any idea what might be causing the reset?

btw the settings are only lost after a complete power loss, regualr reboots and power downs are no issue.

You may want to consider hotflashing the corrupt bios chip and try an updated bios.

i'm really more concerned about the cold boot problem. it's strange because the system has been perfectly stable otherwise. had multiple torture test run at these very settings without a hitch. intel burn test as well as prime95 both proved it stable, the latter for 12+ hours.

besides, i think the bios chip itself is bad, not so much a bad flash but just bad in general. i mean that's the only thing that makes sense to me as it would need to be reflashed after every cold boot. it was getting the new bios from the old chip, which worked fine after i swapped them. asus said no to sending me a new bios chip as well.

i'm wondering if maybe i just got a buggy board all round.

there was the bios problem, now these new cold boot issues, and i also was having major trouble with the bottom lan port, the one on the pci-e bus i believe. with that the system would lock up any time i transferred files from the p5q deluxe to any other computer. switched to the other lan and problem went away.

to add to that my q6600 started out at 3.5ghz, stress tested the hell out of it, 12+ hours of priming, might have even done 24 and no issues, then after about 6 months my games started crashing, so i did some testing and found i needed to drop it to 3.4ghz, just lowered the fsb from 438-425 and got it prime stable again.

as you can see i've had a few issues, but never attributed them to a bad board overall, i'm still not sure my cpu overclock might have just went south from my thermal compound going bad (used ocz freeze) or even the cpu going bad itself. however adding it all together i might end up contacting asus for a new board.

what is asus's warranty period on mobos? like i said i've had this one almost a year.

I have noticed that mine is starting to randomly lose it's BIOS settings as well. I have had mine for about a year or a little more now as well. It will just lose the time and everything. I can too pull from the OC Profile I have saved but none the less, kind of a pain in the arse. I'm betting I can probably reproduce the issue you speak of with this tranfering files thing as well.

Could it be something as simple as a dead or half dead cmos battery?

Maybe but, he just said his battery is fine and mine is not that old.. I trhink it is a flaw with the board it self. They have new revisions now right? That's what I want is a new revision.

anyhow, i'm on the 1805 bios

cmos battery shouldn't be the problem, i tried 2 different batteries that i tested the voltage on with a DMM

i should clarify one thing, it doesn't lose date and time when it resets, so it's probably not a cmos battery thing.

i can get it to boot into like a safe mode where it keeps all my settings, but boots with fail safe defaults. then all i need to do is go into the bios, all my settings are fine and save and restart.

i can also get it to discard all my bios settings. it still boots in a fail safe mode but when i get into the bios everything is set to auto,then i reload from an oc profile and it's fine.

the latter happens with my current oc settings. the former is trickier, i managed it by upping my ram voltage to like 2.2+v which is much higher than i'd like. i've been perfectly stable up till now with 2.02v in the bios (which comes out to 2.1 i think when tested with a DMM)

i don't think it's my ram though, maybe, i'm gonna try doing some more testing with just single dimms. i recently bought a second kit of g.skill 2x2gb to add to my current 2x2gb kit, they're both the same memory model, different heat spreaders though as one kit is a year older.

also before anyone asks i did try booting with just my original kit and same problem, i didn't go beyond that yet though (kinda got fed up with it)

i've never even run the ram at the 1066 speed it's rated for, it's always been at like 1052, or 1022, or right now 1053.

right now i'm gonna run memtest86 overnight and see what it says.

well ran metest86+ 2.11 for 21+ hours with no errors. safe to say my ram is almost certainly fine.

i guess it's possible there's some other bios setting i'm missing, but like i've said this is a recent thing, and i haven't adjusted my settings in ages.

i'm almost certain now it must be the board.

i've already submitted for an rma with asus so hopefully they'll send me a new one.

anyone have experience with rma'ing boards to asus? do you just send them the old board and you're only out the shipping to them?

i'm not super concerned with my rig being down as i have a netbook, laptop and server to use in the meantime and at least 2 of those is more than good enough to meet any gaming needs i'll find :D

I swapped my Q6700 for a Q9400 (it was a good deal and I already had a buyer for the Q6700...) and now I want to know how far he'll go for 24/7 with my 4 sticks of OCZ PC-8500

I'm new to 45nm overclocking so any help, insights, advice, would be greatly appreciated ;)

Q9400 VID is 1.1750

I'm currently with everything on AUTO except MANUAL overclocking set to:

450 FSB
MULTI 8X
RAM at 1080Mhz

VCORE at 1.25000 (my P5Q DLX doesn't allow less - anybody knows why this happens? I cannot select manually anything below 1.2500v :confused:)
VDIMM at 1.94 (since the P5Q overvolts it, I guess it's safe to be this way... it was stable with the Q6700 so why change it, right?)

Can't remember of anything else important, except RAM SKEW on STRONGER and CPU OPTIMIZAZION on PERFORMANCE and LOADLINE CALIBRATION on AUTO.

I want to try a lower vcore while keeping the same FSB OC.

I'm havin an issue with the comp. I go to start it this morning and get noything at all, no beeps, black screen and nothing seems to be moving. I unplugged and reseated the video card, removed and reseated the ram, checked all connections and still nothing. Dead board?? haven't been on in a while and did a search but nothing came up, any ideas??

My neighbors bought stuff for a new i7 build and I picked up their P5QD in the process.
It's not a bad board at all.
I've overclocked a Kentsfield or two in my day and it has taken the least amount of system voltages for good performance increases and overall stability with this one than it has any other motherboard that I've had a Quad on.
I put a 4-pack of Dominators on it and she just sailed.
So far so good.
Knock on wood of course!

What seems to be the FSB limit on this board? I am using the 2001 KET bios if that helps. Thanks!

I haven't reached the FSB limit on my board yet. Currently at 450 and it's enough for my needs.

If you want to run high FSB speeds make sre you get good rams, eg 500FSB with my quad was hard to get stable with the rams at 1000mhz, with rams at 1200mhz it was far easier. P45 and 1:1 divider is harder to get stable.

i dont know WTF is going on with this computer. i was at stable settings for 10+ hours on prime blend. no crashes or anything. then i changed it to try to get more out of it but it was a no go. so i went back to my stable settings and for the love of me it cant even pass 1 hour of prime blend

Is there a software that will help me monitor NB and SB temps? I suspect I have a problem there, and that one of them is overheating. I can't get 4Gig stable no matter the volts I put through CPU

I can't get past ~3950 no matter the Multi. FSB is ok up to 520 (tested with 6 multi). I've been feeding CPU up to 1.4 volts in BIOS. I have Schyte and 120mm fan cooling it. Also have about 6-7 fans on my case (Antec 1200), so temps shouldn't be an issue but I wanted to check them either way :(

what cpu is it? and im using 1.28 nb and 1.2 sb borderlining hot and warm when i thouch their heatsinks, but im stable at 525 x 8. try running small fft's for 2 hours to see if its the voltages of the cpu. if it isnt the cpu, i can almost guarantee you its the nb gtl. it takes ALOT of tweaking. my board surprised me. instead of .630 and higher its always been under that :shrug:

first lower ur vcore for the e8400 e0. im at 1.325 4.2 ghz stable. so try somehting lower then run prime 95 small ffts for two hours and then let us know where you stand. after that, we'll tweak your fsb

Tried 1.38 in BIOS but I either BSOD on boot or if I get into Windows I can't run prime for more than 2 seconds. So it is CPU than?

I got the exact same issue i need 1.38v in bios to be stable at 4Ghz..
If i decrease the vcore one notch i get bsod or errors after a few minutes in windows! My E0 is just really bad. Tried to get it too 4.2 Ghz just to see if it even could and it could do it.. Just needed 1.42v to be able to boot and run SuperPI :down:

I tried tons of other bios settings etc but the ONLY way to actualy get this chip stable at 4Ghz+ is pouring voltage on it :P

Look like I have even worse CPU than you :) I can't get 4 GHz even with 1.42

Sell them CPU's lads and get a new one... I hope you guys are testing prime small FFT and not blend.. first stabilise the cpu , then go with the mix

i wouldnt say that the cpu is bad right away. i bsod on higher voltages. WEIRD board. but im completely stable at 1.325. try 1.33125 and see if that lets you guys load. its should ok. its an E0 and shouldnt need much.

Sadly rig won't even post at 1.325+ all the way to 1.38.

Wish I could sell of this chip but I don't know anyone that would buy it :/ My biggest problem with hardware as I never sell, I just give it away to family

It's not like i hate my E8400 or anything :) I still think it got alot of performance for such a cheap CPU, and im happy with a 4Ghz 24/7 clock. It's just that i want to be able to push it a little further on a decent voltage :)

I easily get to 3.4GHz on my Q9400. I am am having trouble at 3.6GHz. I can boot into Windows, but I fail the IntelBurn test on the first pass. I upped the Vcore to 1.33 and still failed. I am not familiar with Vtt, PLL, and GTL voltages. Any ideas to start with?

Well to start out with if your board is like mine vdroop is HUGE on this board with a quad. You may want to try out loadline. I generaly keep my vtt close to my vcore at load, a little higher with LLC disabled and a littler lower with it enabled. You shouldn't heed that much voltage on your northbridge either. Just set your PLL to 1.56 since it dosen't need to be higher and at auto, 1.52, and 1.54 it overvolts from what I hear. I havent tested that out with a DMM myself.

Your GTLs are based off of your vtt. For example your vtt is set to 1.32 and your cpu GTL is set to 0.650. So, 1.32x0.65= 0.858. That is your actual GTL. You want to keep that between 0.8v and 1.0v. It's all trial and error really and a 0.05 difference in your GTLref can make the difference in stability. You should really read this thread. There is alot of really good info in there.

Thanks for reminding me about my Vdimm and vNB voltages. I needed these to
run my memory at PL=7 for 3.0GHz. At 3.4GHz I am running PL=10 and I do not know if it is posibble to improve that with normal voltages. I am testing:
vDimm: 1.96v
vNB: 1.24v

A nice improvement. Up to now it seems the memory has been the main problem when I try to increase FSB.

I use an old SB Audigy sound card, I have never used onboard audio.

I run 8gb at 1066 pl8 at 2.0v with a 425fsb for now untill I get some proper chipset cooling, so it should be possible to drop your pl. I've found Prime x64 large fft set to custom to use all of your ram to be about the best stress test for memory and mch errors.

OK, Im still struggling to get 4.5GHz even bootable on this dx and 9650. I have tried just about all voltages. Any suggestions aside from ud3p?

My stable clocks now at 4:5 won't even post at 1:1.

Im on the 333 strap with ram running at 1200Mhz so 5:6 (memory was fine there with much lower multi). Even tried higher voltage (and less) with 8x multi, still cant get it to boot into windows.

Oddly enough, I got her to boot and a Spi run (10.3xx) at 4.5Ghz 500Mhz...Took a lot of FSBt (1.56) to do it though...

I too managed to get stable with pl8; pl7 was a no go. Nice, and the voltages are low.

i am having difficulties stabilizing my oc at 500fsb with team xtreem pc6400 3338. the ram is stable at 1200mhz @ 2.10v if i run memtest86+. my board and cpu are stable @ 500fsb with my two other ram set: cellshock and ocz flex. the only difference in setting for cellshock and ocz are the voltage set, ocz (1.90v) and cellshock (2.10v).

therefore i really need your folks help in trying to stabilize the setting with the team xtreem, it's a good ram, stable @ 1110 with 44410 timing and 2.30v.

Tried with a low multi like 7 ( to exclude Vcore), I always run a Memtest ( test 5 and 7 few loops) to setup NB voltags and GTL before I test stability in windows (only when error free)

Try Prime Small FFT first to rule out the CPU's stability, if that passes for afew hours go Blend to test ram NB stability...

Lee ... what BIOS are you using? I had flashed to 2005 from 1406 and I'm having some application issues. Although nothing else seems to be an issue, all Video Encoding applications are crashing now. The only significant change was the upgraded BIOS.

Before I downgrade to 1406 again, just wanted to know what the general consensus is on current stable BIOS.

I'm running 2001m (ket's modded bios) and it's working out pretty well. With 4x2gb sticks and a quad I was getting odd freezeing at even stock settings on every other bios. I also found it easier to stablize than 1406, personally.

You can't really trust that every value will be the same between different bios revisions.

Quite a few people flashed that modded bios version and seemed to have good luck. Either way I would give the 2001 offical a shot. I personally have had better luck with stability with Ket's modded bios' on this board. Don't know why. :shrug: Worse comes to worse the Deluxe has 2 socketed bios chips and AFUDOS i(biosfilename) /PBNC /N will wipe the entire bios.

I've used modified BIOS with no noticeable difference. So i flashed it back to original one.
