ASUS P5K Deluxe - Intel P35 Bearlake + E6600 B1 / Q6600 B3

Hey all,

Quick question about BIOS problems I might have:

I got the P5K Deluxe WiFi edition motherboard within a few
days of when it came on the market, so I'm pretty sure it's
flashed from the factory with their very first released BIOS.

I haven't used the board yet since I'm waiting for a S775
CPU -- the Q6600 G0 stepping which has just come out
today.

I'd also like to get 2GBy dual rank x 4 sticks (8GBy)
Micron D9HNL STT PC-5300/667 DDR2 working on it.

What problems am I likely to have with the default (old)
BIOS? Is there any issue with default / buggy
overvolting / overclocking that could harm the CPU or RAM?

Would it likely fail to recognize / boot the G0 step Q6600?

Would I be much better off if I get a lower end
older model CPU like some Pentium D and boot it to
update the BIOS before I risk the Q6600-G0? I don't
have such an alternate processor, but if it's going to fail
to properly boot / volt / clock the Q6600 I guess I'd have
to get the BIOS updated.

Does the board run well with 8GBy in 4 sticks according to
peoples' experiences?

Other major BIOS problems?

What's the best BIOS version to flash to?
BETA? Release?

You'll notice that your Q6600 G0 at this link shows that the P5K Deluxe needs the 0404 BIOS.

With luck in about 50 hours I'll know if the BIOS that ships with my new P5K Deluxe will work with a new E6750 G0. I'm only hoping to get in the BIOS to flash. If I can't do that then I'll use a CPU that this board supports. So if you can wait a couple of days then I'll let you know what happened.

I want to run 8G of that memory simply because it's
what I've got 12GB of at a good price, not the fastest,
but useful for the computing I'll be doing on my next
2 PCs, and it overclocks reliably to PC-6400+ speeds reportedly, so as long as it works nicely with 4 sticks on
the M/B I'll be happy.

Thanks for the CPU support table link and the
404 BIOS suggestion for G0 Q6600's. Last time I had
checked (weeks ago) the CPU and MEMORY compatibility
tables were basically empty of most useful information, and
I hadn't given them the credit to assume they'd have
updated the info for G0 yet.

Yes, please, I'd be interested to find out what happens with
your G0 CPU and BIOS boot/upgrade experience.
Please let us know what BIOS rev. you end up going
from and to and whether there are any boot / volt /
frequency / etc. problems before or after.

Do these ASUS BIOSes do automatic "on by default"
over volting / overclocking? I seem to remember my
A8N32-SLI Deluxe did exactly that, and had lots of
chronic problems over and undervolting the CPU depending
on one's settings, and from what I've heard it's not an
uncommon sort of problem with ASUS boards.

Hence I'm even more than "normally" concerned about
what it'd do with an "unrecognized" CPU stepping
and very old BIOS version at boot.

I don't see any labels to indicate what the factory
flashed BIOS version is, so my only real options are to
try it with the G0 Q6600 or buy a Pentium D just to
verify/reflash the BIOS.

No RAID issues--currently running RAID0

I found the 501 seemed to let me get a cooler run on the chipset when Folding.

Really great thread--lot's of great info on settings. Good to hear from Old Guy about how much fun it is gettiing the heatpipes off and clean :p


I got the P5K from excaliberpc.com the first day it was listed in stock and was the first on OverClock.net to test it out and run it in with an E6300--easy clocker..best OCer since the P4P800SE IMO.

Sold that and got the P5K3 Deluxe--but was not happy with DDR3 avaliable at the moment sent it back and got the P5K Deluxe.

The P5K vanilla is every bit as strong as the deluxe.

This board drops my load temps a good bit and absolutely destroyed bandwidth benches on my G Skill DDR2.

Seems to OC the RAM better as well--1171 on stock voltage...

Never seen aboard that OCs like this with so many settings left at their default or auto values.

Board of the quarter--maybe the year.

I just changed my chip to a Quad. I can get 3.2Ghz on the multi bump alone.

I got my new P5K Deluxe and so far I've only tested it outside my case. I used the Intel HSF with my E6750 G0. The CPU was recognized on boot and the default BIOS was 0202.

I used my USB flash drive to flash the 0311 BIOS using EZ Flash 2 from the BIOS. This is the version listed on the CPU support page so I decided to start with it. After flashing the BIOS I restarted, set my default values and rebooted.

With all that success I decided to take a break but as soon as I turned my back the system shutdown on it's own. I restarted and found the CPU temperature was in the 70c range. The HSF felt secure but I shutdown, reseated the HSF, restarted and when I checked the CPU temperature it was 27c.

I stayed in the BIOS for an extended period of time without any other problems. I was able to boot to Windows but won't be doing any testing until I get it installed in my case. I won't be using this HSF.

I can't be sure that a Q6600 G0 will be recognized as my E6750 was but I'd sure give it a try.

I don't have an answer for the voltage questions.

It'll ping the router without issue for a few minutes, then it'll lag out. Either a ping spike, or a Request timed out. This causes problems when I try to game on wireless. Normally at my own place I'd be hardwired, but where I am now only has wireless access.

This is true for this wireless chipset in general...I had a few cheap usb wifi keys that used the same chipset and they all had those issues...it can't take long loads...I usually can't download something over 1gb without some sort of time out rror.

I'm glad to hear your new system is overall working well
for you and that you were able to upgrade your BIOS
without difficulty.

That's a bit scary about the 70C CPU temperature, I hope
they enable thermal throttling / shutdown by default
in the BIOS so it couldn't possibly get much higher than
that if it happens to someone else and they haven't
yet been able to change the BIOS / BIOS settings.

I'm anxiously awating a CPU so I can put this all together!

I got cpu error with my 6850 with shipping bios untill I flashed to 0311 now all is well.

Were you able to flash using the 6850 that gave you the
error, or did you have to change the CPU to some other
model the old BIOS supported in order to flash?

What's the stepping of your 6850?

What was the old BIOS version that gave the error?

I can't believe the trouble I'm having installing my P5K Deluxe in my case. The trouble started when my ice tea maker quit. That was followed with the following error message when I got everything hooked up in my case:

Chassis Intruded!
Fatal Error...System Halted.

I don't use the chassis intrusion option so the blue jumper was on the default pins. Before this error popped up I noticed that the BIOS recognized the CPU, memory, mouse, DVD drive and hard drive. I shutdown and checked the jumper but it seemed ok. I reseated and restarted several times with the same error.

My ice tea maker is still broken but I got rid of my fatal error. (I hope forever) I decided I would clear the CMOS but I would do it in steps by first pulling the power plug and make my way up to the full process. To my amazement after pulling the power plug my fatal error was gone.

This is the first time that I've seen this error. Could it be that once this happens you need to remove the power from the system before the error will clear?

I can't wait to see what is going to happen tomorrow!

Semi off trend of whats been being discussed recently....however, any word on a new BIOS?

0501 is still a beta BIOS correct?

Not sure what my board came with but I upgraded it to 0404 so that it could recognize by E6850. From reading this thread it appears 0311 is a better BIOS? Would that recognize the E6850? I guess I can try it. I was just wondering if some one here is running the E6850/P5K combo.

I just got the lot yesterday as replacement for my E6600 and P5W DH. My initial views after some quick settings are that it will go 3.8 fairly easily on air with low volts but I think I need a better cooler to get higher . Temps went up quite rapidly when I tried higher FSB and volts. Still I am impressed with both the board ,CPU and especiaally the memory. These Ballistix are now so cheap and will clock like nothing else I have had before. They are good for 3,3,3,9 @DDR800 and will go upto 1200Mhz. For those running Vista x64 this is a link to a great guide which will let you tune it http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=24912. These tools are also useful TweakUAC and EASYBCD v1.6. TweakUAC lets you switch off or supress UAC - EAsy BCD has numerous tools and allow configuration of multi boot with other operating systems. I found that just installing Vista x64 in a seperate partition to Winxp caused HD data corruption - seemingly this is a know problem and EASY BCD is the solution. Here is a link to a complete multiboot install guide. http://apcmag.com/5023/dual_booting_xp_with_vista Acronis disk manager is another tool that will also shrink the Winxp partition to allow creation of another on the boot drive.

Can anyone tell me exactly what the CPU PLL voltage setting in BIOS is for - I think it is linked to the SB and I have found that I could only boot at my current o/c settings with it set to 1.7.

the bios that ships with the p5k will run the chip but you need a bios update to get it to be full 1333 fsb

Is this P5K board hotter than usual? Mine is running low 40s idle and 60 under load. While my processor is actually cooler than expected (~25 idle).

Should I worry about the 60C loaded? Would this be an airflow issue? What's a normal max temp for the MB?

Just want to share my OC results: After some tweaking, I finally was able to hit 400FSB at 1.4875 Vcore. My temps under Orthos load can spike up to 62C, but generally remain below 60. It is the middle of summer and I'm located in the hottest room in the house, so I'm pleased with the temps for now. I know 400FSB wont turn any heads here, but it's the highest I've ever gone. Thank you to all of the great members here who were of great help to me. I don't post much, so you wouldn't even know!

Anyone know if there is a known problem on this board on the CPU temperature sensor monitoring. My Speedfan CPU reading has been suddenly jumping from about 38c idle up into the 80-90's whilst still showing core0 and core1 temps at about 22c.? This is whilst not running anything in particular. Yes - I have checked the HSF and it fine.

Also appreciate if anyone can tell me exactly what the CPU PLL voltage setting in BIOS is for.

Great overclock buddy 3.6GHz with the P5K will give you a stomping quick 24/7 rig.

I have a similar setup but I dropped the multiplier to 8 & bumped the fsb to 450 for a nice boost in bandwidth & a drop in latency.

My temps with a Thermalright extreme 120 are about the same with 1.5v

Heres my rig specs & some 3D benchies for comparison.

Get a second opinion! Try one or more other apps to see if you get the same results. That will tell you if SpeedFan has gone nuts or you need to check that HSF again.

This is my guess. Somewhere on that motherboard is a circuit that is trying to maintain a constant CPU voltage and this option allows us to adjust the voltage to that circuit. Any second opinions on that?

I would agree depending on the oc to get the voltage stable I have to use 1.6 or 1.7 pll voltage. I think the circuit is the regs under the top heatsink because when I use 1.7 pll voltage it heats up like crazy.

I just raised my pll voltage to 1.7 and vcore to 1.6 trying to get a stable 500fsb x7 ddr2-1000. Temperatures are not my problem if you believe the readings I'm getting. There must be a refrigerator in my case.:D

My last idle cpu temperature was 16c, load 34c using AI Suite.
