lol so please tell us more about the driver problems you experienced ...
wait a couple more days for benchmarks ....
it only means he didnt have problems for 2 years ....

the issue one person has does not quantify the rest of the world
JD power for car reviews shows the worst cars have 200ish issues per 100 cars (first 90 days i think). and the best at 140. so a great car will see about 1.4 issues, and a really bad one sees just 2.
if there is an issue that affects many, and the internet gets an outcry, then people try to assume things just are really bad. and likewise, if someone is having trouble with a few various issues, should they assume its always going to be that way?
i just tried to connect my moms laptop to the tv, which has an nvidia card. and at 1080p the image is scaled too big, at 1680x1050 its too small. there is NO scaling option in the driver. it was forcing it to use the tvs scaling. and even if it wasnt on the tv specific one, there was no slider to make an adjustment anyway. so i tried to update drivers and it was downloading and an incredible 30 KB/s, took over 2 hours to download and i had to leave by then. ati lets you download at over 2.5MB/s
unless someone has statistics, lets drop the whos drivers are worse and by how much debate
I'm not the one complaining about drivers first of all but if you're asking the biggest headache I've had with ATI is nerfed driver installs more times than I can count and having to resort to driver cleaners, never had that happen with nvidia. Even the 10.8's caused dxva on my 4850 to display green blocks during playback, resolved with 10.9's or 10.5's. Do other people have that problem, I have no clue but just because you don't have a problem on your end doesn't mean others don't.
I have no reason to defend or attack these companies or their drivers, I've been around this stuff long enough to know it all has bugs
i dunno how you installs your drivers .. but i let the windows thingy recognize new hardware and find it on the drivers disk .. no problem with nvidia .. nor ati ... how impossible is this :O
and btw when you update your drivers its because you need it to ... for smoother performance in games and application that you use .. and the readme's from ati or nvidia usually provide the change log in them so you can clearly see if you need to apply those drivers or not ... and i do it like that ..and no problem relating to drivers ....
I wasn't looking for advice, haven't had any install issues since the 9 series drivers. I've been installing the same way I always have yet somebody somewhere fixed something since I haven't changed and it hasn't been an issue for me with the 10 series drivers, just magic I guess.
I forgot to mention the latest issue I'm experiencing is with Mafia2 now that I'm thinking about it, after exiting the game the desktop is dimmed way down. Simple work around is cntr+alt+dlt then esc to resolve the dimming until a patch is out for the game itself or video card driver release to fix it.
Of course by elitist logic user error certainly played a roll and that the game and drivers are perfect.
so you never had any issues or did you????
i mean some human errors and some drivers errors or problem exist .. as the case with the 10.8's .. but why did you updated a stable drivers into something else ????
and as the case with the mafia II problem you mentioned ... but like i am i have stable drivers and i keep them for a long time ... and i only upgrade if i have to ... never had a problem that way .. with either nvidia or ati ... and i might have exagerated the human error part .. but alot of driver problems are really due to human errors ... installing too much might cause some registry problem causing driver problems etc... am i the only one thinking of those things ????
btw this post isnt intended to stir up something ... but get a mature opinion on that said driver problem subject
IMHO, for single VGA card system, both IHVs drivers are in the same boat, plenty stable & fast nowadays. But internet forums are filled with enthusiasts, and the prevalence of multi VGA cards system is quite high. That's exactly the spot where ATi driver still needs some catch up with its green competitor, and the source of so much grievances & critics all over the web, hence the FUD about ATi's worse driver.
Read my posts, you asked about what problems "I have experienced" and thats what I've shared some real issues off the top of my head. Have I experienced driver issues of course, its in my posts, was I complaining, no, I was answering your question.
What defines stable driver to you, why bother releasing new drivers at all with that mindset, if they where perfect stable why would anybody need to update drivers at all.
From an IT perspective I go with the if its not broke don't touch it approach on systems that rarely see any sort of change sw or hw but personally the only driver I do update somewhat regularly is video card driver every couple months as more of a driver roll up. With fixes constantly being released for games to hardware scaling when using an hdmi cable I prefer to just put my faith in the driver developers that they will fix more than might get broke whether I am experiencing problems at that point or not.
I've got 5+ year old os installs still running fine as I'm sure others here do as well without fubar'd registries, there should be no need to worry about registry problems unless something happens during an install or the driver is the source of the corruption.
Anyways its all off topic and I don't plan on cluttering the thread anymore...
My point at the beginning was to imply even if you are not experiencing driver issues doesn't mean problems don't exist for others.
stable drivers are drivers that enable me to do the usual task that i need without glitches ... and i dont need more .. but then again im no hardcore gamer ... so i can see why people are frustrated with crossfire problems or even having issues after exiting a game ...
my system install can last more then 2 or 3 years ... my last reformat was due to a full hardware change .. and the other one due to hdd dying on me .. otherwise everything was stable .... but like i said .. i dont have higher needs as compared to gamers who want every bit of frames in the games they play .. so i might be missing out on some issues ....
of course drivers issues exist .. but i have yet to experience some screen flickering or whatever when playing the few games i play ...
no it's that i don't fail to change overscan settings like alot of whiners do when using an unknown monitor (hyundai W241D and 32" phillips flat screen over hdmi in my case); don't play crappy games (i buy 2-3 games / year); don't fail to accept that some problems might be related to something different than the driver (VPU recovery is a problem occuring with bad hardware = PSU / Cooling / VGA).
i also have nvidia on my notebook and never had a problem with their drivers (although everything it does is some CAD work when i'm at the university) just like on our family pc (which is my old gaming rig)
IMO all driver issues are blown out of proportion and based on something which happened a looooooong time ago (last ati cards with really crappy drivers were the 8500 series and last ati cards witth some major headaches were the x1k series and ever since they dropped support for these cards their drivers were pretty good to me (just like the NV drivers which happen to have a better UI) and i can fully recommend cards from both vendors if the price is right
Is your system is sound?
I have none of those issues & honestly how many "other" people do you think have the same one's as you. You're frustrated. But, how does this relate back to ATI and not something underlying within your system?
Or, is there an outcry within some forum (Mafia) that is calling for a ATi driver fix..?
Which?
Hmm so ATI actually make drivers like Nvidia its just that ATI users dont install them properly.
So that makes ATI users morons ? :D
NARUHODO !!!!
There's an n-body simulation software for R6xx and above which gave me 1 TFLOPS out of my 4890 (peak TFLOPS of my card is somewhere above 1.2 TFLOPS). It's just a peak theoretical flops.
Simple, it's just a marketing tool, except that the numbers they are telling are the truth and reachable only on softwares that really take AMD's uarch to its fullest potential. I think SETI, milkyway, and some other DC can do this. IIRC, there's a DC that brings up heat load as much as furmark. Isn't that the case with all processors?
Plus, if Barts is ~3 TFLOPS, that would mean GTX480 or close to GTX480 performance. Pretty crazy for 960 shaders.
Barts Pro 960, Barts XT 1280. :yepp:
Barts XT should be able to reach the same TFLOPS as Cypress XT, after all the new 1280 SPs are some 98.5 % as fast as old 1600 SPs. So, if Barts XT IS a 1280 SP part with new 4D configuration.. It would need some 863 MHz core clock to match HD 5870. It would take ~940 MHz for Cypress XT to hit 3 TFLOPS, and 952 MHz for Barts XT. So, IF Barts is going to hit 3 TFLOPS, it HAS to be at least 952 MHz part. Of course, assuming that the efficiency of the new 4D system is 98.5 % compared to old 4+1D system.
Cayman.. 1920 SPs is equivalent to 2400 "old" SPs. 4 TFLOPS at 850 MHz.
Considering the fact that the real world gaming performance doesn't scale linearly with TFLOPS, the gains aren't as great.
I wonder what AMD would have to do on the SAME available process node to be considered great?
Ohh I know how about renaming 5870 to 6800GTX? :shakes:
Seriously in my opinion if the shaders have been rebuilt then its already a indicator that they are trying opposite to Nvidia "dominance & re-branding days".
