well Now I'm around 290-300 ohms...still no difference.

Looks like I really need to revisit the bridging.

1/2/3/4/5/11 are bridged right now...

should I do 12 and get rid of 5? From what I was told in this thread, doing 5 or 12 will give the same results....it doesn't matter doing 5 or 12....any results that prove otherwise?

EDIT: Can someone post a picture of their bridging work? I'm also curious to see how the conductive ink was used...

EDIT: Redid my conductive ink...I got rid of 5 and did 12 instead....so now I'm at: 1/2/3/4/11/12 with my resistor at 290 omhs. I'll test when the ink dries.

EDIT: Okay, getting better results now...Got rid of bridge 5 and bridged 12....now using 1/2/3/4/11/12 and I'm getting 1.26 on load...about 1.263 to 1.268 The only thing I can think of is to better the bridge connections...i'm using conductive ink....i'll try an improve the connection with the ink, may later switch over to solder and a tiny lead. I still have yet to see 1.28 :(

lets make it very clear why 1/2/3/4/11/12 are the ones to be bridged

1/2/3/4/11/12 are the back of D14/D15/D19 which are dioded

thus any other bridging/more than 6 bridges will not provide more voltage

theres no other step just step 1 -> step 2

if your not getting higher voltage from lower vdiff resistance.. you have to redo your penciling

haha...well I do know this....the FTWs come from SSC cards. The FTWs are considered special and are not high on inventory, they are a short run, limited quantity. The FTWs are going to be better overclockers, there's no doubt about that. The FTWs are the best of the SSC cards. I know I talk about this stuff, but I can't really get in to how I know this.

Anyways, back to the modding, I cleaned off my resistor and I'm starting over again...I don't think that my bridging is doing too well, I cleaned off the resistor and retested and measured voltage...cleaning it off and running bridges only got me to 1.245 on load during furmark testing. As you have stated, I should be seeing 1.26 on load, my bridges probably aren't solid enough. Maybe I should just ditch the ink now and go solder. I want those 1.30 volts! My blocks are coming in soon...

this is all XS xclusive.. luxx forum is the only other place ive shared with

you have to pencil/repencil till you get a working resistance.. just as with unstable silver ink @ step 1

not just lower resistance.. resistance that increases your vgpu

Retesting....repenciled to 250 ohm...just to see if I'll get any difference....boot up is around 1.23v, idle is: 1.07v load: 1.27v (after 1 min of furmark testing)

hrm...I suppose its my bridging then..move to solder tonight.

That is the resistor that on my XFX Black Edition reads 1.07Kohms not 770ohms. Does anyone else have an XFX card to test this on? Perhaps this is why i'm not able to achieve the voltage I want. It's very frustrating as this is not my first time doing these type of mods and even bridging 2,4 and 12 it's only giving me 2.10v on the memory! I'm going kinda nuts here!:confused: With that being said I was still able to pensil that resistor down to 330ohm but I made no difference.

I have no idea what else to do. I guess it has something to do with the PCB build.

Can anyone tell me w/c map on the crysis warhead benchmark is the most demanding for the GPU stability ?

EDIT:

I noticed the card makes a very audible buzzing when in operation, my PSU is a silverstone Zues 750ZF and the card is connected on the 12v4 rail.

EDIT2:

at 30c ambient my card runs at 87c at furmark.. a little hotter than i expected.. fan speed is at auto

EDIT3:

vGPU seems to be at 1.12-1.13 during load and idle,and vMEM at 2.09 - 2.10 at both idle and load, seems a little bit low for stock as it was mentioned that the stock is 1.15 ~ 1.16

my DMM reads 12.01-12.02 on my 12v line.

I'm also with XFX Black Edition (with FTW bios) and my DMM show ~750ohm vdiff resistor before pencil mod.

ive tested/retested/spent a lot of time on the vdiff mod @ ssc and amp.. why does it work for me ?

when penciling the resistor make sure you dont get any pencil on the other components.. it will lower your vgpu not increase it

also when you guys measure the resistance after penciling make sure you dont remove the resistance with your dmm when measuring

That penciling step is for allowing higher vGPU right, dont you guys get temps like 90c over 1.26v loaded? as im getting 87c loaded with furmark and those are at stock volts.

bootup/load increased by .01

then #2 penciled the vdiff resistor down to 300 ohm and bam

bootup @ 1.29v and load @ 1.34v (more like ~1345mV) @ load (first pencil mod attemp)

come on guys this mod doesnt only work on my 285s

Nope, its not you NapalmV5.. I have a 1.34 load with 1/2/3/4/11/12 and penciled resistor...

Dont be shy if you are using silver ink.. seems you need a bunch... I am using the conductive paint that comes with the rear window defogger kit... Its not as easy or clean, but works like a charm as far as increasing voltage is concerned...

Okay, I will try to clean up the area around the resistor. The lead dust gets around and is probably spreading here or there. When the resistor is at 770 (no pencil) at boot the volts are not at 1.26. As I understand it from the write up, the bridging alone should give you roughly 1.26 volts....and that is not the case for me.

I suck. lol.

I'm using soldered leads for the bridging. I ditch ink last night...and there was no change.

For penciling, I'm using a mechanical pencil, I'm not sure what type of lead is in it but I do know that when testing with a MM I am getting 250 or so Ohms. But, I believe that I need to clean the area up around that resistor...lead particles could be touching other components.

well 2HB should work...but man let me tell you, I'm having a hell of a time...almost on 3 hours so far and the best I've gotten is 450 ohm...the mechanical pencil I was using worked great, got me down to 250 ohm in no time...however the pencil mod didn't seem to be working for me. Possibly because there was more lead dust form the mechanical pencil spreading to different components around the resistor. I found the 2HB pencil must more forgiving, much easier and cleaner to use, however I'm not having much success with it.

For me....the Vdiff mod is picky. I switched back to the mechanical pencil and in about 2 mins I had it back down to 290 Ohms....however....after setting it back up I measured volts and I found that there was little to no effect. Its like the Vdiff mod didn't work at all....but before...it did seem to work...blah....back and fourth...I'll give it a try again, very strange.

Okay, I'll be getting my EVGA SSC tomorrow and I'll try it in it as well. I want you to know that I have been doing these type of mods for 3 years now with cards going as far back as a 7800GTX. I'm no rookie, I just want this mod to work so badly I can taste it. My current card is water cooled so I know I will get great clocks if I could push 1.36v!!!

Have you figured out if the FTW is the same hardware wise as the SSC? It has 0.03v more than the SSC that has to come from somewhere. If the hardware (bridges/vdiff resistance etc) is identical on both cards, what is causing the higher voltages on the FTW? Tried flashing the SSC with the FTW bios to see if there is an increase?

well I tied the pencil mod, and I guess I'm either missing something or did not do it right, because my resistance did not go down at all, no matter how much I did it or how carefully or anything. Resistance was at like 760 no matter what I did. At one point it went down to like 730, and then after a few more strokes, it went up to 760. wtf?? I'm supposed to be penciling the middle of the resistor, right? In between the two points that you touch with the MM? I tired doing light strokes, I tried doing rough strokes, it did not do anything. I dunno. The fact that I have to take my card again and reapply TIM each time is a PITA as well.

to make you feel better: evga ftw @ 1.29v load unmodded

if 1.3v is ok with evga than upper 1.3v is alright with me

@ anyone: if you worry about such voltage maybe modding/overclocking your card is not the best idea

just simple #2 pencil - idk how many times ive stated this (#2 HB not good)

reapply TIM ? you gotta be kidding..

like ive said before you guys are making it very hard on yourselves :shrug:

ive done the hard part/done my best to make the mods as easy as possible for you guys

idk what more i can do/say to make it easier

the mod works.. your part is to get it to work

just use simple #2 pencil not #2 HB

Well, to get to that resistor I do have to take the cooler off the card, and that means putting on TIM again after separating the core from the heatsink. Just saying. Well I might try a regular #2 pencil later on. Thanks again for your help.

edit: also how did you confirm that the FTW bios has a 1.29 load voltage? WHen viewing the bios in nibitor it has the same values as a vanilla bios. Or is there something else going on?

Tried to bench the vanilla 285 at with a SSC clocks and the gain in 3dmarks06 is about 450~500.. is my Q6600 3.2Ghz a big bottle neck for this card?

Think im going to have to try this since im sitting at under 70C Loaded with 65% fan speed. More voltage + more clocks looks like a prime example that my card needs. IS there enough solder on the card to add the leads to cross the bridges or do I need to add some? Trying to figure out if I need to nab some from the parents place, but then again not sure if my Hot/Cold solder pen thingy will work for this.

What tools do you guys use to flash the FTW edition on the cards? Asking since I'd like to give that a shot too if thats going to help OC my core more.

so 1/2/3/4/5/11 is 1.26 vGPU, while 1/2/3/4/11/12 is 1.26vGPU + 2.15vmem right?

I used ink btw, and gave it 5mins to cure with some airflow

the added voltages it didnt do anything to my shader clocks still limited at 1566 ( DoW2 shows green texture glitches past 1566) while Furmark/Ati tool/rthdribl and warhead seems to be fine, should i continue or is this a sing of a bad clocker card?

In some cases the card does not automatically revert back to 2d mode, the idle temp is really really huge.. at 63-65c vs 48-50

Well I got my EVGA SSC I bridged 4 and 12 and penciled the resistor down to 280ohm and it turned out the same as before. I am 100% positive the bridges are perfect and I use a 4B artists graphite pencil and have a 2B and
6B as backup. I first used conductive ink for the bridging and then switched to thinly tinned wire that has very clearly adheard to the pads on top and bottom of #4 and #12. Anyway it's a no go for me and I'm starting to lose hope.:confused: Sorry man I totally believe it's working for you but it's seems that even with your extreamly straight forward instructions quite a few of us are having issues with this one.:shrug:

I did the pencil mod using an 8b pencil and the lowest I could get the resistance was around 330. voltage at load went up to 1.30-1.31 from 1.28. However this got me virtually no increase in clocks. My max core went up only 10 mhz and then cod4 started freezing until I removed all overclocks even though it was stable at my previous max clocks the day before. Weird.

Is it possible to remove the heatsink shroud w/o removing the heatsink it self?

Decided to undo the vmod as i was only getting 1.20vGPU ( from a stock of 1.14 ) and it did nothing for my shader clocks still stuck at 1566, didnt bother checking if the core can go past 720Mhz, but even if it does make 750 performance increase would be minimal.

Actually if you just change the resolution in 3DMARK06 from the default 1280x1024 to 1920x1200 and/or add 4xAA, you'll see the 285 easily beating the Hell out of the 8800GTS. The benchmark is reliable, but it's outdated if you if you use the default resolution and settings. This generation of cards is geared towards 1680x1050 and higher resolutions.

That is what i noticed when running 1680x1050 with 8xAA, the 8800GT would crawl along and i didnt even bother to finish the slide show.

Absolutely true. Get a wolfdale up to 4.3GHz+ and your ram at ~575 - 600 MHz and you will see a large difference between the cards. A quad or i7 around the same speed with give you even higher 06/vantage scores.

I can do 3.6Ghz at 400x9 but the voltage required is just too high to keep it stable, at 1.5xx range, and temps break 85c

Temps did rise, but its not hitting 90c or 100% fan speed when gaming.

The mod gave me 1.20v/2.11v , my defaults are at 1.14/2.10 and i didnt get any better gains with the added volts so i just undid the mod, a bit far from the 1.26v/2.15v expected.

Any idea's why my card comes with lower volts?

And what do you use to test for absolute core or videocard OC stability , as i found out that at SSC shader clocks im fully fine with Furmark,Warhead and ATi Tool.. the only game that showed a glitch was dawn of war 2, green flashing textures till i drop the shader to 1566.

my temp max as of now is 735/1566/1404

had to reduce the core to 730, got a single beep in ati tool after 10mins.

I found by measuring the voltage with a DMM that the voltage varies depending on the load. For instance if you check the voltage while running a less stressful game it will be lower than it would if you were running Crysis. I believe when you checked your voltage you weren't loading the card to it's fullest which is why your voltages look slightly lower, which happened to me too before I realized what was going on.

This is a slight problem because you may have your clock speeds set to run stable in Crysis, but then load a game that's less stressful and fail. You may wonder how could this be when it passed something more stressful like Crysis, but the answer is that the voltage increases with load so even though you're trying to run the same clocks that passes stability testing with Crysis, it could fail in some other game.

I've already experienced this first hand with my clock speeds, even with no volt mods.

My card passes all day long in Crysis or any other heavy load application at 799c/1656s/1440m, however I found out this morning while playing Guild Wars that it fails within about 10-15 minutes consistently. Reducing the clock speeds to 792c/1620s/1440m fixed the problem and now it runs Guild Wars just fine. This is simply because Guild Wars isn't as stressful so the voltage regulators aren't applying as much voltage, however the clock speeds that passed for Crysis failed in a less stressful game.

My voltages seems to fixed at 1.13-1.14 when my clocks kick into 3d, this is regardless of the application running may it be Ati tool/furmark/3dmark06/vantage/warhead/DoW2/warcraft 3. Its also been stated that defaults are 1.16v and not 1.14.

With the mod i still get the same fixed voltage 1.19-1.20 ( rarely drops to 1.19 ) and 2.11v , does not change with the said applications/benches above.

EDIT:

Im open to redoing the mod again though, I noticed that i get upwards or downward spikes from both ambient temp reader and fan speed.

Which exact mod are you doing? My default voltage under load is 1.167(1.7) and my voltage with only number 2 bridged is 1.227(1.23). I haven't even bothered bridging more than number 2 as that's what the SSC uses so that's all I wanted.

On a positive note, since bridging number 2, I can now run Guild Wars at the same clock speeds as Crysis so that's a plus. I haven't gained any more clock speed though beyond what I had before the mod, 799c/1656s/1440m. Maybe my card is just at it's limit. Since I'm watercooling, temperatures aren't an issue.

.25w is widely recommended

.25w resistor provides performance not just clock increase ;)

yeh 1.13-14 should at least be the bootup voltage.. my amp 285 had the same 1.13-14 @ bootup before any mods

try diff mobo/psu

hard to believe 1.20 offered nothing over 1.13-14.. but the vid bridging should and it does raise vgpu to 1.26-28.. it did on my amp

10mhz outta .02 aint bad at all :)

like ive said before above 1.3 it gets to the point where stock/air cooling cant handle the load

So, I've done the step 3 with .60w resistor, reduce vdiff to 242ohm and load vcore was increase from 1.23v to 1.28v. But there is something strange. Now I can't run 3d06 on my previous settings 792/1584/1490 with 1.23-1.24 vcore :confused: GPU is under water, RAM sinks and one 120mm fan under the card.
I notice when I run 3d06 on stock setting vcore is 1.24-1.25v, but when I increase shaders, gpu and ram vcore become 1.27-1.28v.
I'll try with .25w resistor later, hope this help.

EDIT: I remove the resistor, back to 1.23-1.24v and I can run 3d06 @792/1584/1490 again. Maybe the problem is 0.60w resistor.

Asked my other friends with a GTX285 vanilla, Palit and Inno3d both cards also came with a 1.13-1.14 stock voltage, so 1.15-1.16 may not be the reference voltage. I also pointed them to this thread and they got the same results i did. 1.20vGPU / 2.11 vMEM.

Our cards also idle at 1.03vGPU and 2.08vMEM

Now i got to redo the mod on my xfx GTX 285xxx as I am getting only 1.20v , i guess the soldering on that card was not perfect , im quite sure thats why my xfx xxx Stops at 756/ 1640/1533Mhz on water Full EK Block. The memory clocks on the eVGA are not great but my xfx xxx goes like hell at 1533 :eek:

yeh and im betting crysis clocks arent stable in c&c generals.. yes that c&c generals from 2003/onward :yepp:

both generals especially zero hour brakes any graphics card knees and makes it crawl and beg for mommy.. at least the way i play customized generals :)

max stable clocks @ c&c generals: 756/1692/1404 on the evga ftw/stock cooler/no mods

If anyone is interested, I have a vgpu mod that doesn't trig OVP.
It is VR based and requires removal of one small SMD resistor, but it is simple.

It triggers OCP at 900/2000, 1.4vgpu, but there's a mod for that aswell ;)

Is that the normal zoom out height ??

I tried my card under Red alert 3, i never got past 68c.. maybe bcoz the game is capped at 30fps.

I'm very interested. This current mod doesn't seem to be working out too well for me, I'd like to try a new one out to get the most performance possible!

Im interested in this one too, id love to see my card do 780+ core atleast

Want 2 ask every1: please, put your results of stable OC-frequencies before the mod(s), and after. It appears difficult to find those results - because all the discussion is about the voltage and impedance values; sometimes it seems that all have forgotten the purpose of those mods. Thnx for reading this.

PS in couple of days hope to get my new Tagan BZ 900W and start the experiments. I'll be using electric-conductive varnish for step 1-cause hardware interference is strictly unwanted.

PPS my english is far from perfect - explain me, please, what's that "vanilla" on every page of the thread means?

Vanilla means 'plain' or base model, like vanilla icecream, as opposed to the more expensive flavours of card like the SSC, FTW and other factory overclocked models ;)
