The small chart you are refering to only shows how clock speeds and voltage will be lowered when not running a 3D application. As far as I know the thermal thrttling limit on these cards is set to about 125C so I am 99.99999% sure there isn't any throttling taking place.Quote:

this thread is about discussion of the HD 4870, not the GTX 280. Im not gona lie here and say that the 4870 stomps the GTX 280 because it doesnt, but the fact of the matter is that the 4870 performs damn well and holds its own right up there against the GTX 280 for a significantly less price. Not to mention the fact that with ATI cards you arent forced to use a god awful nvidia chipset which will wind up lowering your performance in every other aspect of your entire system.Quote:

didnt realize that was a P score and not an X score when i posted. I m not super familiar with Vantage as of yet. But looking into it, it seems any 200 series nvidia score would be inflated due to physX and not translate into real world performance in games, so if performance crown is only judged by highest vantage score, then for the moment nvidia does have it, at quite a cost, but as for relevance, i think their share price and panic reflects the real situation with what ati has come to the table with.Quote:

i have looked at these on a CRT and the top edges where sky meet flying buttresses there is significant ghosting of the textures on the gt200 that is not present at all in the 770 screens.

This whole time I was waiting for the GTX 280 to come out, but it seems that the HD4870 is the real hit. It is less than half the price and in certain games and lower resolution it even manages to beat out the GTX 280. Even in cases when it loses to the GTX 280, it is not by much.

I just bought a HD3870 like a month ago :am: HD4850 will be a nice bump plus i can throw in Bioshock:up: HD4870 looks like a power hog and i've never spent so much on a Video Card. I'm sure it's like $350 after tax+ship, but all that horsepowazz!!!!:shocked: I'm sure it'll handle games for years to come and get insane PPD in Folding@Home. I game at 16*10 and have a Corsair 520HX, decisions decisions, HIS looks clean, simple and tidy :up:

I guess everyone has 30 inch monitors and won't step down from 8xAA at 2560 resolution.
Honestly, except for some instances in Crysis, I don't see where a single 4870 wouldn't be enough in resolutions of around 1680. Let alone FOUR of them. All games are console ports. Even a 8800GT I found to be quite enough, if you are content to play at low AA levels.
Buy one 4870 and enjoy it. It's more than enough for everything.

The MSI K9A2 Platinum is a board that supports 4 dual slot cards...that what they're using for that crunching rig - they use 9800GX2s though...

ATI is not really betting on Crossfire to push them forward. Their multi-GPU cards have yet to be tested, but their new architecture hints at a new internal bridge that will be a huge boon for cards with dual-gpu's (X2). Possible similar to what dual-core CPU utilize.
Since their cores are so much cheaper, it is easily conceivable to see this new configuration for under $499... the scaling should be superior to a SLI/Crossfire configuration. AMD was hinting at this when they acquired ATI.
Needless to say, you've just spent $1300 on a graphics subsystem that has microstutter... :up:

Regarding all of these "supposed" benchmarks showing the HD4870 being close to the GTX 280 under load, I say bollocks. Either the testing procedures are way out of wack ("hey, let's run 3DMark at default settings with the system plugged into a Kill A Watt!") or they aren't reporting it properly.
The reality of the situation is that under load the GTX 280 consumes up to 20% (around 70W) more power than the HD4870 while being disgustingly loud. That is the truth whether people accept it or not.
