Open up your psu. The silverstone ones look like the internal connector is pinned with enough wire lead so you can pin it out and have the wires on the external cable one to one

im wondering what happened to the good old days where we tried to hide all wiring instead of murdermod them.
Hmmmnnn ... that's a possibility, DB. But, I've got another idea up my sleeve ... still thinking about it.
And pingpong ... don't worry about hijacking the thread - this is a learning experience for me and others who are interested. If I was worried about perfection, I wouldn't post pics until I knew everything was perfect ;)
@NaeKuh ... Hiding wires that are in plain site in a Torture Rack is something I haven't figured out how to do. My thought was to try and make them look as good as possible. Unfortunately, I think the uni-sleeving is a bit much for this build - but stay tuned.
Shazza it looks good so far :D
i am never going to get the torture rack because i am cheap and i dont like to sleeve the cables only adaptors
Shaz or some other resourceful person, if you can find this in 18 gauge so it would be perfect for a psu. If you find it please link me!!!
Shaz, to stealth cables in a torture rack you make a bottom front panel and then paint all the bottom inside panels ;)

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/4...4585883118.jpg
@NaeKuh ... OMG - a finished system! That looks good, but I'm trying to get rid of/cover up all the multi-colored wires / fishnet excuse they use for sleeving in some of these power supplies. It's really just a quest I've set for myself to keep occupied.
@Cosmos ... well, you don't have to sleeve everything in a Torture Rack. I'm just experimenting.
@ DB ... That stuff looks interesting. And, yeah --- painting a front panel would be one way to do it, but kind of cheating for the goal I've set for myself here.
A question ... If I want to make a new ATX cable from scratch, can I just use 18 AWG wire for each of the individual wires? The manual shows varying sizes from 16-22 AWG for various wires (although what I see in the actual cable doesn't match their spec) ???
I know, I was wanting to extend cables on my build and ran into this issue too, but it is only the gold pins they are sold out of, they still have this: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...oducts_id=3593
I doubt there is a huge difference between the silver and gold.
Thanks, millertime! I didn't catch that.
And ... here's a quick shot of the sleeved cable in action. I didn't spend time yet "arranging" it neatly - it's just too much stuff sticking out on what is meant to be more of a minimalist build.

man that looks sweet shazza the blue looks awesome
but i think ill like the red better
did you get the blue RAM on purpose? Awesome work!
awesome Shazza !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im finishing my torture rack too... shame on me I havent post any pics yet !!!!
you're so organized! amazing how you can keep your work area neat shazza
great work on those heatshrinks!
i will have look at your worklog and remind myself to keep things uniform when i do my sleeving
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...94_VWgQx-M.jpg
:P drag it under the board so you dont have a loose waterfall going but more of a curve.
Red looks great!
Yes - blue RAM for a blue board. Shopping is my specialty ;)
Get those pics up! I need some ideas.
Thanks, bianco - not always neat, just trying to be more organized.
Ah ha ... I had intended to route the 8-pin under the board, but forgot that the TR has those openings in the mobo tray. I will try going under the board with the 24-pin, although still concerned I've too much going on there. Good idea!
EDIT: Had a chance to do a quick try at routing the cables under the mobo ... has potential:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...45_qVL4T-L.jpg
I agree with Naekuh - routing the cables under the mobo looks heaps better!!!
More pics are needed though to determine further improvements ;)
another vote here for under the mobo :)
I just realized I've never seen a 20/24 molex power connector mounted horizontally (parallel) as apposed to vertically (tangent) on a motherboard. My guess is the reasoning behind that part of the ATX spec is due to insertion force (pulling on things standing vertically tend to topple over - break off) ... that could be it, don't know. ... i've been thinking of modding that part of my mobo recently simply based on color... Might try and "parallelize" it too.
I just mention it because I think in a lot of builds, horizontally mounted power molex would make for a far more unobtrusive wiring job if ones' aim is to hide wiring... Of course, when showing of sleeving as wonderful as shazza's, the obtrusive becomes un-...
Ok, I got a PM asking for "cleanup in aisle 8"
so what needs to go here without me reading the whole thread?
Give me post numbers and I'll take them out with my wet mop, I mean broom..:D
Ok, I cleaned the thread.
How about a little respect for Shazza, one of the nicest people I've seen on XS.
Manners, tact and never a nasty word that I've seen.
I know none of the OT was meant to harm the thread but would have been better off carried out in PM's or in another thread.
Thanks.
Shazza.. I absolutely love the pictures.. Vivid with lots of eye bursting colors.
Everything from your home, to your cute dog, to the colorful builds. Thanks for posting these pictures. Very enjoyable to look at.
I am so Sorry shazza.. i think i caused it when someone said it would be cool if a mobo company did under board wiring.
my appologizes....
@ Shazza
Great looking build, I had a big part in the derailing of the thread,
So sorry, looking forward to more pretty pics :)
I'll throw in my apologies as well. :)
Hey guys ... no apologies necessary. I caught the first part of the discussion and was interested in it ... than I dozed off for my afternoon nap and missed any ensuing drama ;)
As you know, I'm apt to take my own threads off topic, so all's good with me. Still working on sleeving.
Shaz are you using MurderMod kits? I do not even know what they are. Just matching sleeving and heatshrink?
Yep ... it's just a nicer sleeving than I've found elsewhere - a tight weave, so nothing shows through. The kits come with matching heatshrink, and are setup with enough sleeving to do PSU cables, sata cables, fans, etc.
So far, black is the only color on the website, but Kirk (BlueAqua) had some blue and red, not sure if he still does). Hopefully they'll be getting more colors in soon.
They're at murderMod.com
Shaz I am trying to find UV blue 8 Pin PCI-E or 6+2. Maybe also in other colors. PPC does not have them. Can you keep and eye out?
Shazza, just don't make me point the :hammer: in your direction. ;)
Thanks, gillbot - we all have to keep an eye on the TROUBLEMAKER ;)
I have looked all over ... can't find the 8 pin PCI-E in UV blue. Best I can come up with is a 6 pin + 2 - either paint a black one or try cutting the 4 in half. I've tried the painting ... a little iffy.
No worries ... not posting any pics cause I have nothing pic-worthy, but have been slaving away :)
Definitely like the 24pin tucked under the board, looks great.
very nice! I like the sleeving going under the board. I never got a chance to do sleeving on my waterbox build. It looks much better with the sleeving imo!
Thanks, Liderc - still have to try to arrange it a bit, but it should work ok.
Yep -- didn't do much yesterday, but finished the PCI-E cables today - happy to report only 1 bandaid required after that.
Thanks, Jokester. I'm still not sure how it's all gonna come out...
OKay ... a few pics. Just to prove I've done something.
(1) OMG ... what a mess. Notice the clouding in the tubing - distilled water in Tygon B44. Will sort that out later.

(2) A close up of the PCI-E connectors

(3) A shot of this lil' rig crunching ... I just started last week, but it hit home yesterday. We had a friend visiting who we haven't seen in a while. He's recovering from throat cancer surgery and treatment - 48 with three kids. Fortunately, his prognosis is good, but a shock to see what it's done to him.

Thanks for looking ... it keeps me motivated.
Hiya, your rig is look great!
So what do you think about PII?
sweet shazza, sweet!!!
excellent photos shazza!
Congrats on your recent WCG milestones
Oh yeah, you must come to the WCG section and introduce yourself...its a tradition. :p:
Looks great Shazza, keep up the good work
So far, I'm loving it. Took the 955BE to 3.6 with one move. Temps only went up a couple of degrees. I haven't had a chance to game on it yet, but compared to my i7 920 with temps in the 50s, I'm happy. Looking forward to some time to OC and see what it can do, but I think it will make the perfect HTPC setup. The whole setup is also very quiet ... so happy with the components so far.
Gracias, Chicken Patty.
Thanks, skinnee - now I'm anxious to setup my QX9650 and Q6600 and get them crunching too. It's addictive! We'll see how the power bill likes it with summer time in the desert.
Thanks, millertime - still lots to do.
Looking great Shazza!! We neer more pics though :yepp:
Fantastic Sharon!
"Crank up that AMD and let us know how she goes!"
Looking amazing!!! This is giving me hope for my future sleaving endeavor I'm gonna get into on tuesday haha :)
u normal people lost shazza..
she has joined the red side of the force... the dark side....
Shaz,
When you started this build I never questioned your modding and building skills, but did the color choice (intially the blue seemed to powdery). Now I am eating crow, looking at the pics of the rig all together all I can say is perfect color coordination. Excellent work as always.
Good Luck and have fun ... and most of all, be patient.
I don't for the life of me see why you find this so funny - you know it is just part of my continuing quest to be just like you
You callin' me a drama queen ??? (If so, that's the nicest thing anyone has said all day :) ) Just kidding. I actually think one of the participants asked that the thread be cleaned, as they were worried about taking my thread off track (as if I don't do enough of that all by myself :yepp:). Sorry I missed the info that was shared. It would be great if we could get a thread speaking specifically to motherboard connectors. I'd give my eye teeth (if I still had them ) to have a right angle ATX 24-pin connection.
More Pics coming soon ...
Superlative work shazza! I've been overhauling two PSUs with sleeving and I continually come back to your thread for inspiration to continue on with the arduous and more often then not painful job of sleeving.
I think if I understood nils correctly, white sleeving will be available in July, not sure if he meant at the US store or by special order though...
hehe ... had a picture taking session planned, but a few minor issues got in the way. Even I know smoke coming from a video card is not a good thing ... not sure what happened, as I hadn't messed with the PCI-E cables since last I had it hooked up.
Going to try another card and see if everything else is okay. I do have another 4870x2, but don't want to go to all the problem of fitting the water block if I've made a mess of the motherboard too. Pump, fans, etc work, so we will see. I really have had nothing but trouble with these 4870X2 cards. I thought the jinx was off, but who knows?
In an odd way, it was kind of cool - I'd never actually made smoke before, as much as I've messed around with stuff :p:
Assuming you had your pumps going and water was going through the 4870x2 blocks are you 100% on the wiring placement after you sleeved the pci-e cables? If I were to take a shot in the dark seems like a ya might have got some wires criss crossed from the PSU to GPU...
"In an odd way, it was kind of cool - I'd never actually made smoke before, as much as I've messed around with stuff :p:"
Join the club. :D
Yep ... wiring was fine. I'd been running for over a day. Water going through the pump, etc. Can't get it to fire up with an 8800GTX on it, so going to try a different PSU tomorrow ... joys. Back to square one.
OMG the psu wont work?
So you have to redue all that sleeving again?
Shazza maybe the psu died and needs an RMA?
You had it crunching for a while right? and the Load off a X2... btw i feel your pain in regards with the X2.
sorry to hear about the issues you are having Shazza. Hope you get them resolved soon. Hopefully it is not the PSU, that would just be horrible with all the sleeving you've done :(
Yep ... it had been crunching flawlessly. All I did was shutdown to add in the "sleeved" sata and molex cables. Didn't touch the PCI-Express stuff.
The PSU has been ok, but it is a royal PITA to work with. It's modular, but the damn connectors are so close together, you have to go through heck and back to disconnect anything. Not my favorite, that's for sure.
***sigh*** I think the 4870x2s just don't like me. I might give a 4890 a try, altho I'm so far much happier with nVidia.
About redoing the sleeving ... meh, I wasn't happy with some of it anyway. This was meant to be learning/practice anyway :)
As a neutral fanboi and have recently gone through your threads [I'm a stalker], you have had some rough times with the 4870x2. Who knows what happened but smoke generally means pwm area and anything going wrong there usually results in death. =[
TRUE. Shazza, if you have had luck with Nvidia, just go back to it. I am making the switch myself pretty soon. One of my 4870's died out of the blues on me. Other than that I've just never had an nvidia card, wanna see what its like :D
Shaz did you verify all your cables and PSU with a tester before connecting to hardware?
Yep ... I am extremely careful with 'lectricity :p: Doesn't mean we can totally rule out user error.
Like I said before, everything was working fine. Only thing I changed was redoing the molex cable. The one thing I think could have caused a problem was the pump was working intermittently for a short period - it's possible the card could have heated up. That makes me a bit concerned about the CPU as well ... but we shall see.
I had the flashing red "thermal problem" LED on the 4870X2 before it smoked it.
Still trying to sort it out ... gonna try a few other things to see if the board and CPU are ok. DEFINITELY have written off the 4870x2 :)
Well that sucks that it took down the PSU too. Is that normally that an overheated card shorts out the PSU too?
I'm not sure the PSU is gone ... will need to test it on another setup. I'm just mad at it now :(
The mystery unravels ... I think I solved the problem of why the card may have smoked. As I am going through trying to recreate the steps, I had the red blinking LED indicating a thermal problem which may have been a result of my pump issue. I then swapped out the PCI-E cable to a non-sleeved version, thinking maybe one of the pins had come loose or something. When I checked now, the modular cable was not the one for my Silverstone ... but was from another PSU. I'll have to check the wiring to see if that was different. Although, when I did my first PCI-E cables earlier this year, I had the 12V and ground wires reversed on the connector and all it did was not start - didn't blow anything up.
Anyway, I'm now racking this experience up to User Error. Heading over to Fry's to pick up another Power Supply. Then we will see where we go from here. I won't give up, this build just might take a while :)
I know on my thermaltake modular psu it just 4 yellow wires on one side and 4 black on the other. I would think if a pin was loose you would just get a low voltage warning or card would shut down. I know when I forgot to plug in my GTX 260 it just buzzed at me and no picture. I was pretty embarrassed that it took like 5 mins to figure it out too. That's what I get for not following the old KISS.
EK Block. :X
This is why you should of stayed with DD. :X
Yep ... I've had that happen too, which is why I can't understand the smoke problem.
BUT ... excellent news. After changing out Power Supplies, putting in a different GPU, reseating CPU (checked to see if it was charred :p: ), reseating memory ... I have Lift OFF. Now it's booting just fine. Whew.
Still off to get another power supply. NaeKuh told me that Silverstone DA750 was a dumb move. (Caveat ... still don't know that the PSU caused the problem, and it's not fair to say since I undressed it - but it is a MAJOR pain to work with. No since having a modular PSU if you can't get to the connectors to get them off and on!).
EDIT ... just saw NaeKuh's post. Yeah ... you might be right about the block. But, just to prove it, I'll probably put it on the other 4870x2 XXX000
noooo
shazza once u get X2's to work, u just dont touch them. LOL.
everytime i do something to it or its loop, thats when they break.
Good to hear.
I do like my Thermaltake Toughpower 700 Watt modular. That thing been holding strong for almost 5 years now. The only thing I hate about it is don't loose your unused cables since Thermaltake doesn't seem to sell replacements.
Yea that does seem weird to me. Is it still under warranty? If its not, maybe take the cover off and see if you can't find what got fried.
yeah i so wana trash my X2's its not even funny.
But each time i get enough massed up for a gpu upgrade.. a cpu tends to fall on my lap.
:wasntme:
as u can see i got a really big one coming in this week.
Hazards of getting lap dances from n3rds. all i ever get is blood red Fluid XP stains on my lap . . .
http://www.yourprops.com/norm-4702b1...ad+(2007).jpeg
well shazza, even if this build takes a while. We'll all be here supporting you. You've done a great job. And the people who don't mess up things, its because they don't dare to do the things you do  Keep up the great work.
Just as a side note, I tried testing my Corsair 1000's sleeving on my Corsair 620, and it didn't work, which caused me to go back and rethink and repin it and resleeve it and spend all day faffing around with it. Only to find that corsair 1000 wires don't work in the corsair 620. WTF!
Thanks for the condolences all. But ... life is good. And I don't worry about sharing the mistakes along the way, no sense in giving you the uncensored version.
Resisting the urge to follow NaeKuh's guidance, I did go ahead and switch my EK water block to the back-up 4870x2. I wasn't sure this card worked because it was while installing it that I killed my Rampage Extreme.
After hooking up the card and loop ... and bleeding the line/leak testing ... happy to report that I do have a once again working system
I jetted down to my local Fry's today and picked up the Antec Signature 850W PSU - it's beautiful. Not 100% modular, but I decided that my little experiment with all modular was not such a wonderful idea (cheaters never prosper, my mother said). Now all my components seem to be happy.
Don't be sad for my loss :smoke: I've been at this a few years, and this is the first video card I've lost. Motherboards are my usual victim.
I know a work log with no pics is boring ... but if I posted a pic of my work area now, I'd shatter any thoughts you might have that I am a neat & tidy ol' lady worker. Instead ... just imagine this is me:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...46_vHv6j-M.jpg
lol thanks shazza for the update
Lol, get er done Shazza
shazza pull the EK block off the card, and see if its the EK block shorting the card out.
Remember CD had that problem. This is why i warned so many people about this big EK flaw.
I already pulled the block off the card ... had to, to install it on the other one.
I can't see any evidence of a short ... in fact, the smoking card looks fine ... so I don't think it's the block. I'll look at it closer tomorrow.
Im gonna make a thread on anandtech titled called Clash of the Intel Titans, where i will pit my 975 against 3 x W3580's. Only 1 is mine, but i get to pick. :P
Anyhow i dont want to steal shazza's thread. :P
Shazza, your lucky u have tri sli to fall back on... for me its my Xfire or bust. >.<
But i have a TON of i7 cpu's to fall back on...
thanks on the update shazza, glad its back up and running. This is great news.
;)
Oops ... missed the request to take a photo of the dead card ... will see if I can do that tomorrow.
Didn't get much done today (post-homicide depression, I think). I did dismantle the cabling from the DA750. Here's my attempt at sleeving ... had everything but the 8-Pin EPS cable done, as I was awaiting heat shrink.
From left to right, 1) PCI-E 6 pin, 2) PCI-E 8 pin, 3) Sata, 4) 4-pin Molex, and 5) 24-pin ATX.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...00_8Pxtj-L.jpg
(Note ... sleeving is a little more of an aquamarine color than is showing on my monitor)
So now, since there is apparently no more of the MDPC-X blue sleeving in the USA, I must strip these if I want to do the new PSU cables in blue ... still mulling it over.
shazza that is beautiful. I really like that color for sleeving
Nils! Where is my email? :D
Shaz, that sleeving was so beautiful, such a shame to dismantle it :( Where did you get those beautiful blue plugs, they look fantastic, especially the SATA connectors, just brilliant!
