CeBIT: Corsair raids the chassis market: competitors beware?

from those pics it looks like there's an indentation at the top where the fans are? i'm guessing this adds strength?

also i see a fan filter for the psu, which is a fantastic idea, will there also be one for the bottom intake fan? i'd assume yes, but it's always good to confirm.

the power button looks excellent! i like that it's a white led as well.

oh and the ability to go tooless or use screws for the optical drives is another great addition. this will most come in handy for non full length 5.25" bay accessories.

can't wait to see the rest of the changes, please keep the pics coming if ya got em!

i'm really glad to see the externally accessible fan filters, most cases are a pain to access the filters. lian li is good about adding filters, but bad about how they're implemented. just look at their cases with the perforated 5.25" bay covers all down the front, each one has a mini filter in it, that must be a nightmare to clean.

Imo this case is the only real competitor to the Cosmos S - which I own.
It looks like Corsair has taken the base design and ideas of the Cosmos S and just made it one notch better - judging from the early pictures, actually perfected it.
I'm really impressed.
If I was Corsair and looking for further ideas to improve this case, I think I would look at the constructive critisism of the Cosmos S in various fora.

I would certainly upgrade to the Corsair if the price tag was the same as Cosmos S at launch. 180GPB//280USD//200EUR.

P.S How bout an "easier" and more efficient way of attaching the cables on back side of chassis, instead of black gaffa tape? It's getting old and very annoying :)

I really like those updated ideas for the upcoming case but I still would have preferred a near all aluminium case.

I'm against tool less features in general because they are not always as reliable as screw, the only tool less feature that I really really liked is the HDD trays as seen in the HAF-932, CM690, ATCS840 etc...
Other things like PCI and 5.25" bays they end up not biting and locking securely enough. e.g. Some cards lock fine and some do not in my HAF-932, the 5.25" bays are generally fine for optical drives only, but other things that need a tight lock like HDD bay convertors or short devices like fan controllers are really loose.
In the HAF-932 and CM-690 (not sure about the other CM cases) there is access for screws, looks like the Corsair one doesn't?

Hey redbeard does the case has 8-slot pci brackets? we really need that for most i7 builds :(! I saw inside pics a while ago and the case looks like you can add more pcie brackets! add one more please! classified especially will love this case for Sound card + 3-way + Phsyx card! and myself with my gigabyte... I can't do 3-sli beacuse my case only has 7 slots instead 8 :(!

The answer to some of the above questions:

1) Instead of using black gaffe tape on the back, there are a number of openings covered with the rubber grommets that you can use to zip tie your cables/wires. I've done this personally and it ends up looking great and being very well organized.

2) Why is only the front made of aluminium and not the whole frame? Cost. For the feature set and size, going full aluminum would have added a significant amount to the case. Even with it be mostly steel it's a very expensive case. Also, we didn't think aluminum had any benefit save for saying "aluminum construction". It doesn't affect airflow or functionality, and while it would have made the case lighter, this is not a LAN Party case by any stretch of the imagination.

3) What about noise reduction material in the side panels ala the Antech P180s series? We're looking into it. Initially the windowed version will be the only version, but the side-panels with sound dampening might be sold separately at a later date.

4) In the HAF-932 and CM-690 (not sure about the other CM cases) there is access for screws, looks like the Corsair one doesn't? Incorrect.The 5.25" bays allow you to use screws if you'd like.

5) Release Date? Shooting for next month.

6) Hey redbeard does the case has 8-slot pci brackets? It doesn't have an 8th slot, but it will accommodate 3-way SLI. We've added the 8th slot to the motherboard tray, and where the 8th PCI slot bracket would be we have added vents so that the bottom card can be installed and exhaust hot air from the case. We just test-fit this in the lab and it works nicely.

its great to see that when corsair does something, they do it right.

i hope this comes with some kind of a combo deal for getting a PSU too

Can't wait for final specs and price, looking something much more elegant than this HAF-932 yet retaining internal space, functionality and features (painted internal black is the cherry on top I think)

And I fully agree with material choice, full towers are just not meant to be portable, so weight is a low priority.

Noctua is bringing out 140mm fans at Computex, so this case will be perfect now! :D

Still hoping for a top panel without fan mounts that can be purchased separately....either that or a mid-tower version of the case.

It's going to be available at roughly the same time for EU/UK and North America as well as Asia/Australia/New Zealand.

As for prices, it'll be under $300 US but over $250 US. No new info for you there, sorry guys. Still working out how to wrap shipping costs into the equation and all that.

I think at 300, its too expensive for a new product from corsair. When corsair started making power supply, they sold well because they brought a combination of value, quality and performance. I haven't touch the case so I can't say anything about the quality, so at this point all I can say it is highly featured. However what most will say about this case is that it is expensive for a steel case. Why?

I can't even find a steel case on newegg.com that doesn't have a crazy paint job, that 300 dollars?

And for 300 dollars you are butting heads with some legendary competition which are made of aluminum.

This case better not be $299, otherwise every single reviewer will say the same thing. This case is 300 bucks but how could they not fit aluminum into the budget, its too expensive? And since most reviewer don't install water cooling in their reviews, this might be enough to sink it since with brand new products from company that just began making this stuff, reviews are what people make purchase decisions on.

This case seems very nice! Might just put my computer in case again instead of having it lying naked on the table <3

Two questions, the fans on the "roof" of the case, the hole for fan number 3 is a bit further away than the two others, why? The way I see it, if you mount a triple rad there, it will only fit with two of it's fans.
Will it be sold with or without PSU or both?

buying this, who cares if it's steel.. i say more weight and sturdy-er is a win win

When our choices came down to adding some of the features we wanted or going with all aluminum, we chose to go with the features. The hard drive backplane for the SATA drives is server quality. The drive trays themselves are sturdy and not cheap, but we felt that was the right way to do it. Manufacturing the case the way we wanted to do it wasn't the cheapest, and adding aluminum would not have added any benefit to it but weight savings.

Personally I don't have one of our cases as my home rig yet, because the final version won't show up here for another week or two.

My home system is a TJ09 right now. It's a great case and it's very attractive, but it's not perfect.

Our case isn't perfect either - some people want aluminum, some people want no fans up top, other people want 4 fans up top. Some people want all 140mm fans, other people wonder why we didn't add a 200mm fan intake.

You can't please everyone. Anybody can make a case by copying somebody else's design, slap their logo on it, and bump up the price a bit. That's easy. But the custom tooling and design isn't. This is our first case - it's been in development for a year and a half, and I've learned a lot.

My main goal was to make this case fantastic for air or watercooling and to have enough room in it to let you guys build whatever you want.

If I could sell this thing any cheaper, I would. But the fact remains that we pay X dollars to build it, your retailer pays Y dollars to buy it from us, and you pay Z dollars to buy it from him.

Keep in mind, MSRP isn't always street price. If your retailer or e-tailer decides he wants to make $20 less on it, he'll sell it for a better price. This happens all the time.

Newegg looks at ZipZoomFly who looks at TigerDirect who looks at Directron, and they all compete with prices. And you guys win in that situation.

Now - all that being said, if this case is too expensive for you or not your cup of tea, I totally get it. There's a very small group of people who will buy a $300 case. I'm aware of that. Some people don't like the design - that's cool too.

We're working on other products - stuff that hopefully meets your needs. We're not a one-trick-pony here. We're in it for the long haul.

If it's available in The Netherlands in, lets say, 2 months I might go for it..
I want a new case and this one comes close to what I want without having to mod it extensively....

Looking good so far. Will there be enough clearance for a triple stack up top? If not, will it be friendly to external mounting solutions?

In Spain we say "Nunca llueve a gusto de todos", which means that nothing is felt the same way by everyone. I have to say that Redbeards explanations are totally coherent: we, users, want everything to be top-notch, but everything you add, had to be paid. Of course with an unlimited budget we could have an uber-selfmade-titanium readytowatercool case. But this is how the market goes: you need to make a good product without raising the prize tag to the stars and, to do that, you need to forget about what is less important and that is really tough stuff to do. If you would ask me about my preferences between alu or watercool-friendly, obviously im sold on WC. The painted interior is something you don't take in mind: its a premium. All alu would have been really nice, but not for +$50 (which i think would be more). So...lets wait 'till he have in our hands and lets throw the tomatoes then :D
Besides, if you look at this case from the right direction, you realize the pricetag: this is not a case where you just put your stuff in it and forget about it, neither it's a case not-planned in which you will have to change everything to put a damn radiator on it. There is stuff for everybody and, lets be honest, the high-end case market is quite boring, this case may start the fight again, and more fight means everything but, specifically, good news for us, customers.

PS: I'm not aware of how the Corsair PSU's are prized there in the US but, here in Spain, you just can't get anything better for what you are paying, wether its TX750 or HX620...Well, the only thing they lack is that there aren't 700-800W modular psu (which should be issued asap) but, other than that...

now red bear you go and make one like that one with alu xD for all of us alu lovers LOL

If this case is going to be mostly steel and pretty heavy wouldn't you put wheels on it or possibly have wheels that you can buy for it? I have been researching all sorts of cases for my next build (which is around the corner) so far, I like the Silverstone cases. Got my trigger finger on a Silverstone case unless there's some concrete release date/pricing for this case.

what about a name? what's this thing going to be called?

i need something more specific to google for than "corsair case" :D

Some changes i would make. Remove the 120mm fan thats mounted on the midplate facing up. It just looks out of place. Hide the rubber grommets for cables behind where the motherboard will be and use longer standoffs. Cables appearing out of the rubber grommets looks ugly. Could possibly put a HDD section in the bottom aswell as or instead of the other one as there is alot of unused room between the PSU and the front of the case.

Fan has been moved to underneath where it sits, and it's a 140mm, not a 120mm.

Also, the longer standoffs is not a possibility due to the current tooling of the case. I think the rubber grommets look pretty sweet actually, compared to what most other cable routing jobs look like.

And there is a HDD section in the front bottom of the case with room for 2 3.5" drives.




For the other questions - yes, there will be detailed photos and data coming from Computex. I built two systems here, one with a really sweet watercooling rig and another with 3-way SLI GTX 280s and some nifty cable routing.

You'll see them in Computex pictures. They're probably en route right now.

i see it says 4 fans are included, however i count just 3. the intake on the bottom, the rear exhaust, and the intake for the hot swap bays. where is number 4? at first i assumed one was included at the top, but it then goes on to say that there's room for 3 MORE 120mm fans suggesting there's another fan somewhere else?

edit: i'm guessing the hotswap bays use a push pull fan setup? there must be another 140mm fan on the other side. either than or possibly one at the very bottom of the case where the other two 3.5" bays are?

edit edit: hmm, something else i didn't see, you guys added the ability to mount a 120mm fan on the lower 3.5" bays in the same orientation as the hotswap bays fan, this suggests that my second guess for the hidden 140mm fan is wrong. either way that's a nice little bonus feature you added their :D

another question though, does the cover for the hotswap bays pc board allow you to still plug in power connectors and sata connectors while it's on? i'm guessing if it does you'll need all right angle connectors, which isn't a huge deal for the ability to hide all that wiring, that's easily the ugliest cluster of wires in my case right now.

Right angle on one end, straight on the other. All connectors are black.

The power adapter is 1-SATA male to 4-SATA female to connect a single SATA power connector to all 4 drive ports. Here's some images to give you guys some scale of the case and how it all hooks up.

The finish is the same as the coating on our PSUs, by the way, so if you like that you should like the case.

i was looking at the back of the "socket/screw hole" and it didn't match all the 4 screws so it makes it useless since i can't remove screw/backplate of my waterblock or whatsoever :shakes:

We are looking at making the backplate access hole larger right now.

as long as it goes from the top of the board, down to the first expansion slot, and 1/2 inch from the ports, to an inch from the right (where ram slots are), it could get 99.9% of any atx board. and stability isnt an issue since the edges can be raised/indented to give more structural strength.

Is that mini WC system going to handle i7 OCing better than air cooling (TRUE)?

This is a superb case, love both the insight into some features and the overall look...

A wish list:

1> For a face plate as beautiful as this, it is imperative to add (or sell as an extra) DVD masking plates.
2> I would love to see a way of negating possible noise from moving parts. A good addition would be rubber pads embedded in both sides of the fan screw holes. Lian Li has come up with a similar approach to the problem.
3> This is a grand entrance to the market. Plz continue with sth in the <200$ range (a mid tower addition would be wonderful).
4> Plz offer a panel version without window, preferably with some acoustic foam added.
5> Any plans for a possible silver/grey/gunmetal/(enter color) version?
6> We need an e-sata port in the front panel.

I'm sold personally, keep up the good work.

see you guys added a picture of the front i/o panel. couple questions, is the panel door also aluminum? and is that round thing on the far right the reset button? seems the power led is built into the power button, which is nice, and i assume the thing below the power button is just a hdd activity light.

in the video i like that the door has a nice slow opening design, looks pretty nice.

You're right on all counts.

The reset button is behind the I/O panel in front, and the front door is dampened so it opens slowly. The panel door is an aluminum front with a plastic frame.

i know it's probably a bit early still, but is corsair thinking of making accessories for their cases? maybe 5.25" bay devices, i'm especially hoping for optical drive covers sometime in the future, but i've mentioned that before ;)

Awesome case! I must say it has lived up to my expectations after seeing the LC build in it. And I think at 299 it is a reasonable price for the cases it is competing against. I second the question about whether you can fit a second radiator in the bottom if you remove the hard drive tray though - has anyone at Corsair tried this?

Plenty of room but you'd need to do your own mods to fasten everything together.

Congratulations, Corsair, you've managed to make me ditch my idea for an air-cooled mATX i7 rig in favour of a WC'ed i7 in this case :p:

But seriously, that's one gorgeous case, and a fantastic entry into the case market.

One question, what is the retail price on these going to be? techPowerUp says US$300, which seems a little steep for a steel case, as nice as it is.

This case and the ABS Canyon are completely different markets... The corsair case is geared toward liquid cooling, where the ABS is aircooling since it is too small to take larger rads.

Have any thermal tests been run/compared to other popular chassis?

are we going to get extra hot swap enclosures with the case? will corsair sell more of them individually?

are the hot swap bays pretty standard so you can use different hot swap enclosures? i've never used hot swap enclosures so they're a bit new to me.

seems like they'd have to be standard in order to really be functional, so i'm guessing they are? but what would really be nice is if the case shipped with say 5 enclosures so you could have one for swapping at least one drive in and out from the get go.

I'm probably going to end up buying this case just because the positives definitely out weight the cons but you know what makes me me a little mad about this case when people are presenting it? When they specifically point out that air that cools the hot swap drives gets push through the backside and magically the hot air will come out the back end. Okay let's take a step back and think for a minute, hot air rises, it ain't going sideways with proper guiding and even it could go sideways, there's a ton of cabling that's in the way so how did Corsair think it was going to end up through the backside without first accumulating a ton of hot air behind the motherboard? Granted there isn't THAT much heat coming off from hard drives, wouldn't you think that it would just be a heat deathtrap?

in my experience simply moving air across a hard drive improves it's temperatures a great deal. when i put a hard drive in my thermaltake black-x hdd dock it get's blazing hot compared to the 3-4 drives i keep in my case with my 80mm intakes running at even a very minimal speed.

i'm sure airflow out the back won't be exactly direct, and there likely will be some build up of heat, but overall the heat should still remain mostly isolated from the rest of the case thus i'd imagine improving overall temps in the case as compared to venting the air directly into the main chamber of the case.

i think the best way to improve upon the design would be to perforate the side of the case where the fans for the hdd bays exhaust, but if you go that far you might as well mesh both sides.

i don't really think it's going to be a big issue since hdd's don't need all THAT much cooling to begin with, so i think they made the right choice by not incorporating some sort of mesh or perforated side panels.

we'll just hyave to see what the reviewers say. anyone who has done enough case reviews will likely be able to tell what works and what doesn't.
