Not really... Popular ones like COD4, crysis, ut3, World in conflict, GRID, age of conan, mass effect etc are all good choices
Would be nice to see further investigation on how they scale with FSB, memory and CPU clocks.

I like madshrimps review because they have MIN fps, which is what matters to me, and the GTX 280 and the 4870X2 are VERY close, and i can see nVidia coming back and taking the crown with the new G200B, i think an overclocked GTX should keep up with the MIN fps with the 4870x2 no? If so i would rather get the GTX because i wont have to worry about scaling issues which are encountered with no popular titles and older games.
I like this better:
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...review-12.html
because it has a larger variety of games, and they give you reasons for choosing these particular benchmarks. Madshrimps seems to be very selective in the games tested, three of which are known to favour nvidia.
With the 4870x2, the 2 teraflop powerhouse is much more capable than any piece of hardware out there, but unfortunately its limitations rest in the driver.
Now with ATI focusing on multi-gpu platform, it will only get better and better with every driver release. Not like we have seen with single card where its 2-5% faster, I am talking 15%-20% faster in certain cases.
Yep, there are some reviews (Ive read like 5 or 6) with min fps results. The Madshrimps one is decent but their system is very weak, wolfdale @ 2.66Ghz 2Gb DDR2-800. When the cards are bottlenecked results are alot closer than what they could be.
Min FPS results certainly do not resemble what we see on AVG FPS charts (slaughter). Very close in some games but in others...not so much.
HD4870x2 is still generally faster in this aspect tho... But with CF scaling/issues/drivers and price differences in mind, both cards have their place on the market :yepp:
That's true for crysis where crossfire scales horribly, but I don't think any amount of overclocking or optimization will make the 280 catch up to these minimum frames:

http://images.hardwarecanucks.com/im...D4870X2-81.jpg
http://images.hardwarecanucks.com/im...D4870X2-58.jpg
If you're not going to use the X2 with a really fast cpu and a 30" monitor there are better choices than the 280, like the GTX260 or 4870.
http://bbs.chiphell.com/viewthread.p...extra=page%3D1
Min fps here too.
That's rather bull IMHO. We don't know how much the X2 dips into that low framerate, if it only did it once as a result of random testing or different buffering schemes at the start it still gets the low result and not high-flying constant minimums otherwise.
But I see people are trying to actually justify the GTX280 with all sorts of ridiculous excuses so I've already made up my point. (There is none of it trying to argue)
I know min FPS is not everything dude. Ir was just an observation, no need to teen-rage and resort to personal attacks. Im not trying to justify anything, its not of my interests. Im not biased towards any company.
Silly me, I should never have spoken about the GTX in this thread in the first place. Sorry about it, de-railing the thread was not my intention
Unpopular titles, ok.
But older games? You want dual GPU support for older games because ... they would stutter with only a single HD4870 with 1GB? OHNOES, CALL IN THE FIRE BRIGADE818! No, seriously, that sounds like a non argument.
Good point with the first argument, though. But can't that be "forced" by renaming the executable? Or is there more to it than just that?
and wait a week for drivers for a new game?
 I acknowledge the lack of 30", did not have the budget available to get 2 of those just yet;)
more limited gameline-up is totally due to lack of time; I was able to test the card ~12h before NDA expired; re-ran several benches to verify all data was correct; and prefer FRAPS over time-demo benches, which also increases time.
more in-depth tests are planned for later on, including AA scaling, although with HD4870X2 at 1920x1200 it takes 16xAA to get it "slow down" in all games but Crysis, so far.
any tests with oblivion?
Hehe, I know your pain. I had a total of two days for mine. Hard to cram an in-depth review in that time.
Also, I tried running DX9 on Crysis like you asked....but the bench just wont run in that mode. Not sure why. I was able to confirm the performance drop at the end of Crysis however. In the beginning of the game, could run 16xAA 1920x1200 Very High quite easily. However, as soon as you drive down the mountain and first see the huge alien performance takes a dive. At the aircraft carrier, performance really drops. I had never had a chance to get that far on my 280, though, so I am not sure if its specific to the X2.

DFI has early BETA BIOS fixing that issue :)
Read Hardware Canucks review for more info. From article..
Quote:
To cut a long story short, we brought in another DK X38 T2R along with a beastly LanParty LT X48 T2R and found both new boards to have the same video display issue so we immediately knew that it was the board itself and not the card. After searching through the DFI Beta site, a BIOS was found that completely resolved the problem with the incompatibility between the motherboard and the HD4870 X2.
At this time we have only experienced problems with DFI’s X48 and X38 boards. The P35 and P45 series seem to be fine but if you are having problems with either of these chipsets, please post in our HD4870 X2 comment thread and we will try to sort things out.
Hi Everyone,
I'm contemplating picking up the X2, but I've read conflicting posts that state vsync can't be used on that card due to AFR
I run 90% of my games with it-I can't stand tearing, so it will be an essential function.
So, is this fact or fiction?
Thanks
FYI for everone who tried the Beta BIOS from DFI. It seems that it works for some boards and not others. On the three boards I have now tested it on it works, on a forum member's board it didn't seem to.
Good going DFI...
Thanks ether.real,
I've never run a multi-gpu card before and wanted to make sure this was not an issue.
I appreciate it.

On my Maximus Formula i would get a message on screen "NO PCI-E CABLE IS PLUGGED IN THE VGA CARD. PLUG THE CABLE IN IMMEDIATELY". or similar (forgot the exact words)... :p:
Thanks very much Mascars!
Yes the first of the 4 level-bench loops is always somwhat slower (only maybe 1 fps less, no big deal).
No question, i'll buy 4870X2 anyway, as soon as i can get my hands on one.
Yes he forgot that! :D Mascars never shows the bottom line in his bench window (it would reveal the type of test run). Oh and Mascars: the 64 bit version of the exe does not run ANYTHING better than the 32 bit version. Subjectively, the 32 bit version seemed more fluid. On my single 4870, Cat 8.7, Vista Ult 64 SP1, 8 GB RAM, DX10 VH / 1440x900 8xFSAA system see my sig
afaik you can disable one gpu in the driver without restart (at least my 3870s do) to play older games, and ALL older games work with excellent framerates and high resolutions on a 4870 1gb ;)
old game not supportet is one of the worst arguments i've ever hear because CF has been around for 3 years and i'm sure that they didn't drop CF support from any game they added in these 3 years...
BTW: even without support 95% of all old games run on CF enabled systems without IQ issues or perforrmance drops
More like 50% but that's innacurate as you or me can't test all older games. And yes, you can use Catalyst AI to disable Crossfire if needed too. But what's the point of disabling one of the cores you've paid for? Even for old games I needed way more than a single 3870 with heavy AA. Now with the 4870 that need is almost non existent tho, but still there. I was talking about swapping cards, was that guy serious? :ROTF:
BTW Gears of War DX10 is fixed with lastest drivers? That wasn't an old game and perfomance was :banana::banana::banana: at best

What's the point of playing a DX7 or DX8 game with a DX10.1 card for which you paid good money?
You see, there are a lot of arguments on that matter. Would you think a GTX280 would be better at playing a 3 year old game? And for that matter I do not think a 3 year old game is old. But seriously, how should the HD4870 1GB be any problem with games that are a couple of years old? I'm not sure, but you stated that AA was the killer back when you had your HD3870. I'm sure you are aware of the fact that AA was the weak point of the HD3000 series, but is really the strong point of the HD4000 series. So that is that.
What game(s) can you come up with that 1) have no (decent) CF support, and 2) won't run fluently on "only" an HD4870 1GB?
Also what about renaming the executable if you desperatly want to crossfire those games?
Last I would think civ2, monkey island 1 & 2 and stuff like that are prehistoric. Games with an engine that is accelerated by D3D I would consider just old.
But seriously though, I don't see the point in thinking a 2 year old game would suffer many problems trying to get it running crossfired.
Hiya
Not quite sure if this is the right place for my problem but i've been following this thread, and in general the 4870X2 news quite thoroughly, and focus seems to be in here in this thread.
Well, I just recieved my 4870X2 by Club3d and now I can't get the card to "post" It doesn't show any screen what so ever.
I can see five little LED's light up when the system starts and the fan is also running - but no screen.
I tried to install my old 8800GTS 512 card and it had no problems it posted instantly.
I've tried to connect hardmounted cables AND modular cables from my PSU but for no good.
I'm desperate

Hello!
One quick question .... is this PSU enough for 4870x2?? ....500 Watt Enermax
Sistem:
E6600 2.4Ghz(3,1)
2x1 Gigs 800Mhz CL5
Raptor 10 000
Like you see ... one small sistem.
Monitor Samsung 24 TFT 1920x1200
Thank you all !!!!
you should try how it work with 500w first, then maybe get better one if needed.
That Enermax, which type is it ? And how much is the amperage of the 12v rails combined ? And your spec, only a single raptor, no ODD, fans ? I must say a good 600-650w unit is prescribed to be on a safer side.
http://www.bigbruin.com/reviews05/re...liberty&file=1
Enermax Liberty
The Liberty sucks for its given wattages. Sorry, get the 650W and sell yours at a nice price.
Dang, only 32 A on 12v rails combined, that's rather gimpy for a modern 500w unit, i must say you should upgrade your PSU as well, since i've heard numerous complaint about Enermax PSU circa 05-08 before the introduction of Pro and Modu 82+ series, regarding their durability under consistent high load. That HD 4870X2 could pull 20 A alone on its peak load, while your PSU has stated that it has 20 A as the OCP of each of its 12v rails, so that unit is simply not adequate for its intended purpose.
Had no issues with my 620 liberty with 2 8800GTS in SLI, 2HDDs, 2 Optical drives , evGA 780i and Qx9650 @4ghz...but with this monster 700 watt and more amps might be a better choice...
Jen-Hsun Huang (NVIDIA): ''We Underestimated ATi RV770''
No kidding, Einstein! :)Quote:
We underestimated the price performance of our competitor’s most recent GPU, which led us to mis-position our fall lineup. The first step of our response was to reset our price to reflect competitive realities. Our action put us again in a strong competitive position but we took hard hits with respect to our overall GPU ASPs and ultimately to our gross margins. The price action was particularly difficult since we are just ramping 55-nanometer and the weak market resulted in taking longer than expected to work through our 65-nanometer inventory.
Well at least he admitted it.
Guess nVidia had big financial problems, since they only needed 300$ to test the competitors product and find a way around it. They should have just asked for a Donation, with all nVidia fans it wouldn't be to difficult to raise 300$. Instead they waited for some reviews and only then took some action.
Yeah, good question. I saw mention of someone having a flickering problem with the 4870x2 here- http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1336452 Has anyone else experienced this with the new x2 as well?
The one and only time I tried crossfire (x1900xt's) my display flickered like mad, and I've stayed away from multi-gpu setups since then. But, I'd really like to upgrade to a 4870x2 for the performance boost...
I've also owned X1900XT Crossfire and experienced flickering with single card too.
It was very noticeable when using my HDTV as secondary display.
Flickering was supposed to be gone with 2900 series. My current 3870x2 doesn't have this problem.
I hope this to be a driver / isolated problem.
Yes, Im very curious about this because only happens in vista crysis flat setting....XP flat will do fine. So i need to set medium flat first before changing everything else, that way object quality will always stay med while the others h/vh. But this thing doesnt work if I did otherwise..start from high/very high & work my way to medium. Even when i reach the same setting with medium flat first
It's very odd though....only CF but not X2
2 years of sitting on your ass and rehashing old technology to rip off your customers. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say: OMG, STFU and get to work make us a decent card at a decent price. "Can of whoop ass", pfft.Quote:

I am seeing flickering, but only at 1280x1024 resolution.
There's no need to buy a GFX card each 4 months once there's a new one released... some expect always revolution but all we got was a small evolution... Be honest was there the need to lauch something that wasn't totally required then and would kill there own lineup ?
We will see what they can come up with to get at an equal performance level than this ATI beauty.... I think everyone agrees that at least prices are way more affordable now then a year(s) ago... you can get a wide range of high end cards from each competitor in the medium price class now (comparing to a few years back)... and even the midrange cards run most games pretty fast...
Let's reward AMD finally pushing technology by buying temporarily cheaper nVidia cards!
Errr...
recently, i've compared the prices of my old cpu/gpu to the new ones:
a64 4000+ (san diego) - 380 € | q9550 - 250 €
7800gt - 360 € | 4850 - 135 €
= 740 € | = 385 €
that's a huge difference. memory was also double the price, i've payed only 69 € for my 4gb 1000mhz ddr2...
mainboards are about the same though.
jep, the development is absolutely fantasic
cant see stuff getting any cheaper, its the perfect time to buily a new pc....
Does anybody have problems with CCC on Vista64? I tried all possible drivers for the card but the CCC always crashes no matter what.
No probs here having card since a few days, driver taken from cd. Only thing running extra\together with CCC is d3d overrider for vsync under vista x64. So far so good.
for say $550.00ish would 2 9800gx2 be better for the price than 1 4870x2?
