Lol, do they come out with new versions daily?
Still waiting on someone to comment on whether or not the V6 clients offer any advantage over the official release. Or does everyone still run the stable rls :D
Seems like when they're bug testing revisions come quite quickly sometimes. I tried one of the betas a couple months ago and got tons of errors but they may have progressed past that now.
weird. i encountered an error on the 6.2.10 x86 build.
"error reading setup initialization file"
edit/ i'll just revert back to the 5.10.45 build :)

Version 6.2.14  I switched 2 rigs on Vista 64 to this version a few days ago. It does seem to be slightly faster. I'm only running the cancer units on these and my times have dropped about 5 minutes.
what's the best version? im still on 5.10.45 (32bit)
I've had some problems with version 6.2.14
Couldn't get that machine to show up in Boincview.
Maybe it has something to do with the new version -> it's 'service'
installation only.
Then I tried several things which screwed up the Boinc installation.
All Wu's in error :shakes::brick:
Reinstalled 5.10.45 again and all is well again.
I upgraded 2 Vista x64 rigs to 6.2.14 on 7/30. No problems and it may have helped fix a F@H GPU2 issue that I had. Everything is running Great!

Is there any advantage running the latest over say 5.10.45?
Not that I know of... I only updated 1 machine from 5.10.45 so far.. update doesn't really work, it kind of leaves the old client on your PC but somehow disables it. Also I'd advise anyone who wants to update to upload all finished WUs beforehand, as they are NOT transferred to the new client :/
Also try not to have WUs at 90% or something, because that CPU time will be lost too.
I installed the 64bit client as well, since I'm on XP x64 on all machines.
Was :banana::banana::banana:ed up like I said.
Thanks for the heads up.
Just an FYI. All the beta clients have been removed from the main BOINC download page. Only recommended versions are listed now. Of course, this could change in the future.

You can still find the beta versions here.

Is it possible to manually transfer the old WU's to the new version? or do I have to finish off with the old ones first before i install the new version? I noticed the location of the projects and slots folders are different from the old one...
HanmoLi
you should be able to install right over the old boinc and it will pick right back up where you left off When you exited the program
Yeah well, only that didn't work for me ;)
Installed the new 6 stable rls over the old 5.10.45 and all was gone, WUs, settings, account info, everything. Oh well...
Didn't see any benefit over 5.10.45 by the way, so I wouldn't really bother updating machines if they are producing well as it is.

yeah, everything was gone like what jcool said... i guess i'll stick with the 5.10.45 for my other machines for now. good thing i only updated 1 machine, and didn't lose too much computing time.
Ya I'm sorry, but I told ya so ;)
Just an FYI to everyone. Beta and alpha builds have those names for a reason. The 6.3.X clients are technically alpha releases, though I've referred to them as betas. I've had no issues with any of the 6.2.X clients. Even though 6.2.18 is listed as a recommended version, my understanding is that it has not been fully tested.
There is no one client that works best, point-wise, for all machines and operating systems. You have to try each one to see. If you are not adventurous, then stick with the older clients.
Personally, I use different clients for different machines. The most important thing is stability. A client that continually hangs on you is not worth having, no matter how many more points it generates.
If you're looking for a way to boost your daily output without increasing your overclock, switch to a 64-bit operating system. This has been proven to increase daily point production, especially for Windows users.

W00t, more points! :D
Did you use x86 or x64 version? XP or Vista?
The more results I see the more I suspect Vista gives higher FPU rating... even though Integer seems to be unbeatable on XP x64 (my X5450 get 11500, but only 3500 FPU or so).
Ok, just updated my Harper from 5.10.45 to 6.3.12
3,87Ghz (430x9) on XP x64 SP2 results are as follows:
5.10.45
# of CPUs: 8
3930 FPU
11467 Integer
-------------
6.3.12
# of CPUs: 8
3934 FPU
12107 Integer
So, what we see is yet another increase in Integer performance, while FPU stays the same. Still nice boost, let's see how that translates to PPD
Thanks hawkeyefan for pointing this out.
Oh yeah, one more thing: This time, I didn't lose all WUs, config files etc. like last time. So it should be safe to update.
Sombody explain this?
02.10.2008 13:37:52||Not using a proxy
02.10.2008 13:37:53||CUDA devices found
02.10.2008 13:37:53||Coprocessor: GeForce 8800 GT (1)
02.10.2008 13:37:53||Version change (6.2.19 -> 6.3.12)
Let's see ...
You're don't have a proxy server set in your config
It found the CUDA capacity of your video adaptor
It nominated it as a coprocessor, named it a GeForce 8800 GT and says there's only one of them
It registered that you updated from 6.2.19 to 6.3.12
Did I miss anything?
I think it means you now have the CAPACITY to do that, but you'll need the science application to be coded to make use of that capacity for it to be any use.
The new boinc betas are incorporating gpu processing for applications that can use it. WCG is not one of those yet.
AT LEAST as many. There's a few with multi-GPU setups, too.
6.3.13 is now available for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit users. These are not recommended versions, so use at your own risk.

Hi guys,
A new user on WCG has some problems getting a BOINC version running on his 64-bit installation. Does someone has experience with that.

thanks and cheers
nevermind ... the guy found a solution

Are you sure these are recommended? On the main download page, these are development versions.
But anyway, it's working fine on my machine (Vista 32 bit) :)
If you download from the link on the WCG home page you'll get 5.10.45.
I'll try it on one and see how it goes for a week or so. Thanks :D
edit: I don't think this is a recommended version. The boinc d/l site lists it as a development version and after install it says pre-release. I'll still see how it goes on this one machine and report.
Cut Sierra a break he does tons of work here for our benefit, and the benefit of others, usually without thanks, not everyone can be cheerful 100% of the time.
I don't know what are you talking about, you ARE helpful!
I'm always installing the newer versions on my computer,
even if they are final, recommended, or developement verions.
I was just... Never mind... :(
Edit: 6.3.14 beta is now available for Linux and OS X users.
6.2.18 vs. 6.3.14, Q6600 running 456x9=4107Mhz on XP x64 SP2:
6.2.18:
FPU 3869
Integer 10931
6.3.14
FPU 3878
FPU 10746
6.3.14
Since 6.3.12 is even faster than 6.2.18 I'd currently recommend using 6.3.12
6.3.12 on my new Q6600 & 6.3.14 on my QX9650. Thanks for the up jcool, I'll switch my QX back to 6.3.12.
And Sierra, your work here is very appreciated by me. I don't think I have ever thanked you in this thread, maybe once, but I am very grateful for all your updates in this thread as well as the Milestones thread:up:.

i was using 6.3.14 and it was crashing on me. just woke up to get ready for work and it said "Boinc can't connect..." and when i click "Ok" the manager goes blank and i have to close and reopen it. so, my pc sat idle for some period of time again last night :( i just moved back to 6.2.19 since its recommended
Same with me dragon, except it was on Saturday...I moved back as well and have had no problems
*Noob question alert*
Is there any real reason to update boinc to newest version? I mean do they increase performance regularly or is it ok as long as the older versions work?
I updated to the beta and had problems with that...I went back to an earlier version and it seems like it's taking longer to complete projects. Although that could be just my imagination. Also my point average is dropping, but that could be due to catching up or some inactivity over the past couple days.
Depends on the version. Some improve performance, some don't. That's why we keep posting bench comparisons, in order to figure out which version currently is the fastest.
I run 6.3.12 on all machines but 1 (still on 6.3.14, no problems there, just not enough time to change version right now).
