Well i managed to get my Xeon up to 450X8 at 1.37v and my ballistix up to 1041MHz so far thanks to bios settings from various users in this thread. Thanks guys! The settings i couldn't get working are ram settings. Anyone have settings for ballistix?
I'm kinda worried about my pwm and chipset temps. My pwn temp got up to 59C and my chipset got up to 51C while running prime. This seems pretty high. I thought i had a fan that would fit my nb hs (old amd cpu fan) but i couldn't get it to fit. I mounted an HR-03GT on top of my 8800GTS with a 92mm tornado so it's right under the nb hs but like i said it got up to 51C full load. I'm thinking maybe i could turn the fan around so it's blowing at the nb hs. But then i'm not sure how this will affect my gpu temp. The way it is now i can't even fit a fan on the nb hs.
59C, 51C...is barely luke warm....
So i don't need to worry about it? I just upgraded from an AMD/NF4 setup and these temps seem crazy high. :eek: :DQuote:

Thanks. I was doing some more testing and rebooting, so I remembered to check the boot options. Sure enough, it said "Disable..." again, so that proves you guys are right again.
BTW, for the question earlier about the Noctua NH-U12P heatsink. For my case, I cannot install it vertically so it blows toward the back of the case. This is simply because of the design of the Lian Li PC-A10 case and how it has no room above the motherboard.
However, I did test it outside the case, and it does indeed fit over the NB heatsink's large base. I did end up installing it so it is horizontal and I actually had more trouble that way. The heatsink sits off center slightly because the brackets on the base of the NH-U12P hit the NB heatsink. And once again, the Lian Li kept me from having fans on both side of the heatsink because of the limited room.

I need 1.4125V in bios for my 6600 as well as
1.387 VTT. I think VTT is my biggest problem. I wont go higher with Vcore for sure, but i dont know how high i can go with VTT.
When i am into OCCT for 40mins coretemp shows me 68 max. - idle my cores are now 34/37
I am on Air/Xtreme-120 and ambient temp here in the room is 21.5
tested 40mins OCCT stable now.
is this safe?

Regarding core-temp and vista 64:
There is a "hack" program called "atsiv" which is hard to find. this allows forcing of unloaded drivers, therefore allowing rmclock, coretemp etc....i have this and i DO have Vista x64 SP1.
For coretemp i have a batch:

Atsiv -f ALSysIO64.sys
"core temp.exe"

Loads the driver and starts coretemp. Under Vista 64.
Atsiv is very hard to find (its on the microsoft blacklist) but you can find it in some add-on packeges, i uploaded it here:

Yeah, I have some settings from Praz and others. Right now I know I can do 3GHz at 1.3v. I was just asking because it would save me so much time to test someone else's settings adn see if they work that to go through the whole deal and find my own. New member here. Set up a system with the DFI X38, and just wanted to add some input about 3rd party coolers. I'm using the Thermalright Mosfet 9S Type 2 cooler, it fits, for anyone thinking about using it, but if you don't use the thermal pad provided it will actually short out the components above the mosfets that it rests on. (It bridges them all.) Luckily, I don't think my board was damaged.
Quick question. Seeing 42C idling for an hour with the Noctua NC-U6 northbridge cooler...is this higher than normal? I'm not overclocked yet. Ambient is about 22C.
Yes, I would say that is higher than what I am getting on the stock cooler. So far my highest under load was 38C, but that is with the CPU fan blowing across the NB heatsink.

the VTT charts available are based on actual measurements of VTT voltage on board, it seems that 2/3 is always a bit lower than 0/1. Thats why you see values like

I look at my VTT voltage in bios (what bios says, not what i SET it...) , then i set 0/3 and 1/2 69% of VTT and NB Ref GTL at 68% of VTT. I think this is how its done.

Also, in regards to straps in bios: 266/... 333/... and 400/...
I did some testing and noticed that the 400/... strap gives me higher latencies, also if i run ram FASTER than with 266 strap. Same timings and ram even slower under 266/... everest shows me better benchmarks and lower latencies! Like 57 compared to 65ns udner 400 strap.
I chose 400 strap and set ram fast and SAME timings and get very bad latencies.

Good news on the CPU-Z issue. Just got done testing and it works fine with both 32Bit and 64Bit versions of Vista. The next release from Frank will hopefully put this problem behind us.

Well i wasn't satisfied with my high pwn and nb temps so i reversed the tornado on my HR-03 GT to blow at the nb heatsink and was able to ziptie an old Thermaltake fan(from a Volcano6cu) over the mosfet heatsink. Dropped my load temps down at least 12C on both and my videocard temp still stays under 40C while gaming. :) I tried another method before this and ended up messing my nb heatsink up. It looks like i've had this mobo for a while now. :(
I asked this question before but didn't get an answer. What's the max voltage i should run this X3210 for daily use on air? I know the Intel specs say 1.37v and that is where i'm at now. This chip can go higher with more volts but i'd like to keep it for a while and don't want to kill it.
zsamz_, what 4 sticks are you running @1200MHz? I have D9's and i'm not sure where i should draw the line for the voltage. I got them running at 2.19(in bios) and i know alot of people have had them die with anything more than that.
Most people consider 5-10% safe. Going from 1.37v, that means 1.44 to 1.5v.
However, of equal improtance is the cooling. I admit I am not as familiar with Xeon specs, but I can imagine that since it is a server-class CPU it's meant to handle a bit more than a consumer grade chip. Just make sure that whatever voltage you decide to put into it, that it stays well under the rated temps spec'ed by Intel for your CPU.

The problem with that solution is that obliviously they look ridiculous and the 4 gigas wont fit there together.
So I'm thinking about using a 5% arctic epoxi + 95% arctic silver mix on the chips and re-attach to the sinks, but the warranty would go bye bye I guess.
Another think to consider is to use 3rd party hs and preserve warranty.

Can you post a pic of your board in the case? I would think there should be room between the NB and the TRUE. My guess is either that the NB HS was installed with the fins near the top or the fan is sitting down too low on the TRUE. If the latter is the case, is there a way to slide the fan up over the base of the NB HS like on my Noctua NH-U12P?Quote:

I am a big fan of the Laing D5 pumps (DD D5 and MCP-655) and triple radiators like my current Swiftech MCR320-QP. Last night I sat down and was going to get everything in the case and install the os.
SOOOOO after 9 damn interruptions I got it all together. I then realized I did one thing wrong.
I always clean the cpu and hs with artic cleaner and purifier. Well after thinking thru the interruptions I cleaned the cpu and hs. Then I was using the purifier on the hs and had to take care of some family biz...When I got back I finished but I didn't use the purifier on the cpu...
Does the cleaner leave a residue that will mess up the paste?
I did not start up the system I ran out of time so it will just be a matter of removing the board and hs and cleaning and reinstalling and screaming and shouting LOL
Hey there guys not sure if you can help me but I am having trouble learning all the BIOS functions. I am coming off an Abit AB9 QuadGT to the DFI LANPARTY DK X38, so there is a HUGE difference in BIOS options. There are just sooo many different options I am not sure what does what. I actually figured out how to reach 400FSB no problem but anything after that is tough. I am using a TT120 and I am hoping to hit 500FSB with this MB. If I can just 500fsb I will be a happy camper for sure.
i had to reapply TIM on mine since i didnt do it right the first time. Demounting this whole **** with the U Extreme 120 is a pain in the ***, in addition i have a very tight case. So you spend an afternoon disassembling the whole thing, removing motherboard, etc...i know the feeling.
I also dont want to know how often it happened i put everything together, and then i found the mobo wasnt seated right onto the side-panel (with the LAN connectors)...again removiing the whole thing, motherboard out/in again etc. Also...there is this fan connector which is BELOW the graphics card (if GC is in PCIE3)...impossible to remove a simple fan plug. So..i had to remove the card first to get to this stupid connector :)
In Everest Ultimate 4.2 I'm seeing 56C Core 1 and 46C Core 2 under 30 minutes OCCT load. That Smart Guardian lies and reports 27C. I just reseated my CPU HSF and am using MX-2. HSF is a Xigmatek S963 (cause it would actually fit) mounted with a Thermalright backplate kit and some washers to add additional pressure. Ambient is about 22C.

Oh right...that's at stock too on an E8400.
AFAIK Smart Guardian reads the socket temp, and not the "on-die" temp. That would account for the huge difference.
As for the Xigmatek, have you checked the contact on it? I had a HDT-S1283 (which I beleive is the big brother of your heatsink) and was not getting as good of temps as I expected after seeing other reviews say it was a top performer. When I unmounted it, I saw why. Since the heatsink has direct contact with the heatpipes, there are grooves in the aluminum base for the pipes to fit. It seems with the one I got that the grooves were too deep. The aluminum base was making perfect contact with the IHS, but the heatpipes were not. In fact, such poor contact made the thermal compond not spread out as much as it should.
Unfortunately, the only real way to find out if this is the case for you is to remove the heatsink and check the contact.

Nice board great step up from the 3200 icfx . Then running strong 6600 go @c 1.3 390x9 priming for 3 hours np run cpuz hangs up reboots the dreaded C1 error. Nice took out my 2 crucial ballistix 8500 1gb set toast @ 2.1v . So microcenter is close by, which would be better the ocz 6400 2x2gb vista set or the 2x2gb corsair xms6400dhx ?

Yea, the HDT-S1283 is the big brother of the HDT-S963. I went with the S963 for space reasons so I could close the side of my Wavemaster case. I came from a Tuniq Tower with which I couldn't close the side properly.
C1 error? My board always boots up C1, then changes to FF. C1 is bad? Or yours halts with C1 on it? (which mine has also done sometimes...I made the assumption it was DFI being finicky.)Quote:
