Nvidia confirms the GTX 580

I was just about to say that. Some people just sound like politicians when they try to hide their brand loyalties. Brand loyalty (or just sympathy), in the GPU business, is perfectly understandable in my opinion. There are two sides with distinct approaches to everything including the design of their GPUs to their styles in marketing and advertising - a very different general image they produce. It's normal to feel biased towards one brand. Just don't try to feed people misinformation about the facts, that's all. People here on the average are too knowledgeable about this matters to pull it off. :)

Why do you over exaggerate/blow things waaaay out of proportion all the time, are you a drama major. Technology will continue to move forwards as it always has, the efforts involved in delivering the next jump in performance is irrelevant to the consumer that buys a product at a certain price point & level of performance which is usually done relative to the competition and what the market will bear. If products at the same price point are competitive with each other does it really matter how that performance is derived.

Do you think its ok that newer stepping cpu's of the same uarch last years with new clock speed bins and minor tweaks.

A majority of tech we see today is recycled over and over and tweaked and tweaked over a period of time. Is the current AMD uarch not simply scaled up and tweaked from what the 3870, are the current cards such a drastic departure from its ancestors.

Nobody knows what 580 would exactly brings to the table. It's as unclear as Cayman. But nVidia seams to be very confident in this round. I's clear that nVidia is ready for a good "fight" in this round. It indicates that they have a good card on hand. That's all I can say about the table right now.

Completely reworked architecture, move to VLIW4 ,new tessalation unit, higher memory thoroughput, all of the enhancments that are in barts already, higher power consumption yet 2xchip Antilles cards ,BIG die,a first for ati from the 2900 days, which in itself should bring around 2x performance of barts.Of course there is possibility that it will fail like fermi did, however if it was going to flop, having cypress still around, amd wouldnt launch it, but they are gonna in a month.

so the nvidia 500 series is what exactly in comparing your comment and reality ....

amd's K8 arch was recycled for too long ... and newer speed bins are only ways to clear the warehouse .... it doesnt mean its good technologie practice ....

You see, some people has been speculating/guessing about all kind of great stuff that Cayman will bring. They repeat the same speculation in all forms and shapes that finally the whole wolf-pack believes it. Just have a look at cayman-thread you'll see what I mean.

If these kind of "speculations" should be the base of discussion, then I've had a tip a few days ago, before we knew 580 was real. Back then I said, i think 580 will drop from clear sky right on cayman's release. And then, we can expect it to beat/match cayman. Because this timing would require a lot of self-confidence from nVidia.


Now we know 580 is real, but nobody knows for sure about the balance between 580 and cayman yet, but nVidia's timing for this release shows a confidence that indicates they have a good card on hand.

If the performance and price is competitive relative to the competing alternative who cares. If they can squeeze enough performance by tweaking a current uarch to compete who cares. Do you buy a new video card for the uarch/process node or do you buy it because you want/need more performance.

There's a lot more real info out there about Cayman than GTX 580, simply because we know the reviewers have already been briefed on parts of it and are under NDA, whereas GF110 we can't even confirm if it is GTX580 and vice versa.

how real is it .. have you seen the card with production sticker let alone a product review ... how can the card be real .... antilles is real .. but we dont know much more then its planed within 1 month or so ...

There have been "leaks" of the GTX 580 name on Nvidia's site and (I think) in beta drivers. However, we have no other concrete info on the GTX 580.

All we know is the name... :(

a name that was removed a couple hours after it was put there ... maybe they knew some fanboys roaming the site would take that as granted and leak it on the web to use this as a pr stunt ...


who knows .... so until i dont hear straight up news from the director of gpu sales or whatever from nvidia that the gtx580 is comming then its still wild dreams ...

I think 580 is real, because I've seen the 580 on the driver-list for developers. But nothing is that real that you are indicating before you can buy if from shops. Sometimes they have paper-launch too, but all these applies to Cayman too. But I think both are real.

But Cayman is into reality. We know it's coming, and based on how good Barts is, we definitely know that it's going to be a good card. We've seen some specs on Cayman from official AMD briefing slides; Cayman is as real as you and me, and we are pretty sure of what to expect.

The GTX 580, however, is nothing but a smoke shield until we get some hard info from Nvidia or one of their partners.

I don't want to speculate how real/unreal 580 or Cayman is, because I don't know. I have to see them in shops to tell for sure.

I think, and hope both are real. That's my opinion for now, and time will show how real any of them are.

In short, no.Things i said earlier and others have said, are not speculation, its mostly from AMDs own slides that have been delivered to reviewers.
On the other hand, as in GTX580, for now we have only one driver entry.And possibly shot of an engineering card, altho it could be any card really.
So Sam_Oslo, that leaves us with some credible information on cayman versus none on alleged GF110 ;-)

LOL. So to you Barts didn't exist until you saw it in the shop. Nor did Cypress or RV770 or any of that. So somehow Cayman being on the AMD slides isn't enough proof.

i think you are straightening it finally. I agree with most of what you are saying here.

We have more info about Cayman, and some is from AMD too, but I guess you know what I mean about speculations. Some people drag it a bit too far, and conclude about the balance between Cayman and 580 before we have seen any of them.

We need to see reviews, tests/benches before concluding which one would be better. Right now, all of us should try to be more clear what's speculation/guess, and what's fact. But facts are really scare, in both camps.

Alright Sam, that's enough. You can stop being a yes man now ... it's creepy and annoying.

We don't need you to tell us to be calm and wait for benchmarks, maybe some of us will end up buying nvidia afterall. Relax, we can think for ourselves, there's no need to act like our conscience.

The 460 was out (as a respin, gf104), to compete with the 5000 series, which is now basically EOL. There is no 580 yet & nVidia just had to make drastic price drop to even compete... so, I don't see how their "confident" either.
