Amd Volcanic Islands details

I'll make a list of some items we need to know while seeing this benchs
- Temperature: they took the GPU-Z readings... we don't know if the can be trusted right now (first, it's not updated, second, the GPU has various sensors to read the temp, we don't know if the readings are correct, plus, we don't know nothing about the fan profile of the card)
- Power consumption: first, it's total system power consumption... second, they use Furmark.. from what I was reading in other forums, Nvidia detects Furmark and their cards run in "safe mode", we don't know if the 290X are in full power or "safe mode", just look at the 280X power, it's 70 watts behind, I think that's a little too much
- Clocks: the Nvidia cards has GPU Boost... because the clocks are always changing, they use the "stock clocks" on the graphs, but probably the Titan & 780 clocks where near the Ghz mark too while benching, but not while in Furmark...
Aaaaannnddd.. this is probably the best i can do now... at least we got something like a confirmation about launch date (Oct 24)

my Nvidia card doesn't ? (GTX 570 SOC) - my system pulls >500W from the wall running furmark (3770k + Gene V system)

Actually no, it's 404 Watts under Furmark for the complete system. And Furmark puts almost all of the load on the GPU, the CPU does almost nothing. It's 62 Watts more than the Titan under load.

My (virtual) money is the R9 290 coming in around the $399 range and the R9 290X coming in around $499 for ref / std cards a bit more (+$50) for cards bundled with games or over clocked cards.

At those price points they'd be great bargain alternatives to the GTX 780's

Only reason I am leaning in that range is because currently not its really addressed by anything in the new lineup. Its also a "no brainer" value buy at those prices.

I didn't see if they listed the power supply they used but an inefficient or too large power supply could make a 62 watt difference. These benches are also at 1080p which is considered 'low resolution' for these cards. Just wait for a real review before you get too worked up.

I hope you are right, but early price indications show higher prices. And I don't think we will see cards with a meaningful overclock if the 94C temp at stock in the benchmark is to be believed.

It would be stupid for Nvidia not to launch something new. Depending on what Nvidia launches, AMD might have to give a pricecut of the 290 series even before launch. And if the $650-699 prices were supposed to be the prices, this might be a good thing.

From the temperatures and the powerconsumption from the mini review, it looks like its clocked much closer to the ceiling of the cards. The 1100mhz OC ceiling seems pretty likely at this point if those are the powerconsumption and temps. Hopefully AMD put some beefy VRM's on these things either way because that was a source of dead cards for alot of cards OC for Tahiti.

I have a feeling in a larger review with more games like techpowerups, the performance of 290x is going to be somewhere closer to the gtx 780. With a benchmarking suite of all newer games and a healthy serving of gaming evolved titles, its going to move towards Titan.

@1080p, its really a shame to benchmark those cards at such a low resolution. However, in that review it trades blows with the Titan, sometimes being quite a bit faster, other times being slightly slower. This is likely just the Nvidia/AMD difference in specific games that we see with all cards. But either way, if the price is $650 and is slightly faster or equal to a Titan (not counting power/heat) why would you be disappointed?

Why is it a shame to bench them at 1080P when on half of the benches the cards don't reach 60 FPS average at those settings?

if this card come %10 faster than titan in this resolution 1600p i will be very happy:) ,but if this card come with the same Titan performance in this resolution 1600p and consume more power and more heat that will be disappointed :shakes:
Because we know that GTX 780 OC ($650) can give you Titan performance with Less heat/less power with the same Price?

Sleeping dogs has really paid for itself over and over. Amds Most recent driver work has really helped them in metro last light. It's seems like the reverse of the beginning of the year were nvidia was getting the better out of Amd s gaming evolved titles. Now Amd has metro last light and pax Payne 3. While nvidia has collected crisis 3, bioshock and far cry 3.

Add sleeping dogs, company of heroes 2, hitman absolution and dirt showdown/grid 2 and you have a scenario Amd will almost always win.

r280x uses less power than gtx780 while gaming but way more in fur http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/A...II_TOP/24.html

for now i will take the tests that show r290x uses more power than gtx780\titan in fur as just a sign that it has a more capable vrm that doesnt crap out so easy when you oc and hopefully not the power use we can expect to see in game

So it trades blows with Titan/780 OC, which is about what was expected. The power consumption MAY not be quite that high, since different tests by different sites typically give slightly different numbers. Either way, it performs well. Now to see pricing and how it stacks up against a wider variety of cards and games...

Well the 280X is priced in the UK at around the 250 - 280 mark, which is around the 399 dollar mark. So I expect the 290 and 290X to be a good bit higher.

The 280X Matrix Platinum is 320 pounds, which = 511 dollars. So I highly doubt the 290X will be in that ballpark.

But yes, I'm not saying that's the cost, just that the guess of $399 and $499 is likely way off.

Yeah unfortunately we will not be seeing price points like that.

I don't think power consumption in Furmark is a really good benchmark for what the any card does 95% of the time.

Prices in Europe are usually a 1:1 conversion with the US price before your local sales tax. My guess pricing will start at respectively $499 - $550 and $599 - $650.

Because the 780 has been out at the same price as you're quoting, for several months at this point, and performs around the same. In short it's basically nothing new for the market, other than hopefully causing a small price war. Also, the reviews with 20million-X antialiasing that no one would actually ever want to game at since you literally couldn't see the difference even in screenshots without 400% magnification let alone in motion, are definitely a shame to benchmark in. Give us some actual benchmarks of how people play games, i.e. max settings for example with 2x MSAA + FXAA resulting in a framerate of 80, rather than 8x MSAA with no FXAA leaving tons of motion shimmering and no transparency/alpha antialiasing, while also leaving shader aliasing untouched and crippling your framerate to unplayable 30's.

While I agree Furmark is not a great test due to its unrealistically high load, the cards are on even footing there so you can definitely draw some info out of that testing.

Well, from some of the document slides, it appeared the hardware runs higher resolution without as much penalty, the whole eye-infinity thing. From the benchmarks I saw, it was faster than the 780. However, I don't know if I trust that review site, we will see in a few days though either way.

No, they are not on level footing. Nvidia detects furmark and artificially caps the power so they look so much better than the amd counterparts. Run games and they are on level footing where that 70w of power difference will come down to a few watts. Just see the 280x review vs the gtx780.

Its amusing that so many people are mislead by furmark numbers thinking that they represent relative real world power consumption between nv/amd. Well, they just dont.

I don't really think it could be called equal footing given that both AMD and nVidia write their drivers to recognize and throttle applications like FurMark which they refer to as a "power virus". All you're seeing is how much power they've decided to let the card consume under those situations which is some arbitrary point not related to the maximum power each die would necessarily want at a true 100% load.

You inferred Mantle is some sort of DirectX replacement. It's not. Nor do you really have much of an understanding of how these API's function or what their purpose is other than the marketing BS talking points AMD releases and you faithfully repeat. First i was joking with the notion mantle is an unfair method, that's like saying AMD cards having 1000mhz instead of 500mhz is an unfair method. What you "inferred" is up to you.
Second, mantle is in fact some sort of directx replacement, when running BF4 you either run mantle or directx, this is directly from AMD and Dice.

People are constantly pointing this out? Dude you were the first one and i wasn't even talking about mantle replacing directx.

If the argument is purely in regards to the topic then so be it, if it's personal and will elevate to attacks then please take it elsewhere

From a technical stand point the fact that Mantle is made for the very same GCN architecture that the Xbox one was built from, and the fact that mantle is compatible with the windows operating system, it would make perfect sense that Microsoft would have access to the technology for the Xbox one. I cannot see a reason why Amd would be willing to supply Microsoft a custom SOC but not Mantle or a version of it that would allow Microsoft to make the most out of the hardware there, but rather supply the technology ONLY for desktop applications. The only reason I can see that Microsoft not use it would be if they chose to code the xbox ones game side OS so differently that the API would not be compatible for some reason, or if they had decided that their solution was as good or better.

From the PCOnline Review it looks like R9 290X is 0%-10% slower than Titan with the exception being Metro Last Light.

Fairly disappointed after "In Battlefield 4 it obliterates Titan" ... pretty sad that I allowed Marketing-ese to lead me to the conclusion that it may be (on average) at least somewhat faster even outside of Mantle.

I suppose other reviews can come out that would invalidate the PCOnline Review.

ABout Mantle etc... I really think its time for everyone to sit down and wait the 11-14th November AMD sessions for really got information about Mantle, True Audio and the new GCN architectures instead of discuss things peoples have only no or incomplete information about...

Sometimes it is fun to try and figure out stuff before it is officially released, but when it degenerates into people demanding they are right on different aspects all based off of different rumors it gets to be a little tiresome. Then I just go back to waiting for the actual release so we know what we have and to shut up the clamor of a bajillion opinions insisting they are right :p:

Internet is ablaze with these benches at the moment and the respective arguments it's creating.

I personally will sit back and wait until decent reliable websites post stuff up.

All you had to do was look at the name of the event... "AMD GPU14 Tech Day Event - Sept 25'th"

Also, Nvidia didn't release specs of GK110 "months and months before launch," they simply revealed specs of the GPU meant for other markets.

I think everyone knew big keplar was coming, its was just a matter of time after the specs of gk110 were announced. Actually Titan is just 7.5% faster than 780GTX(vanilla version!) according to techpower.
So 290x being faster than regular 780 just means that is basically on par or even a bit better( probably depending on game title) than Titan ;). All that with better pricing structure than both 780 and (especially) Titan. Then you have TrueAudio and Mantle, GCN being the target/proffered platform for both console and PC games (logical as AMD has the hardware for all next gen consoles locked in for next 5-10 years). AMD is winning this time, there is no doubt about it.

If I do remember the launch of the Titan, it was widely regarded as a Niche product and ridiculous at 1000 dollars. Nobody including Nvidia anticipated that gamers and enthusiast were willing to open their wallets as willingly as they did and as I understand it the video card outsold expectations. That being said the fact that Amd could respond in as little as 8 months on the same node NOT relying on a cut down professional Gpu that was easily adapted, before the launch of the next node so the card remains relevant is to be applauded.

And another thing, just because pendant 1 simply proclaims something "=BS" does not add validity to the argument or somehow make it true.

Errrrrrr.... It's been 5 months since gtx 780, I would sure hope they can match or beat its performance by now! They might end up a bit cheaper but again I would hope the heck so on that too. Nothing unexpected there. As far as console wins or architecture I'll believe the benefits when I see them. Amd rarely takes advantage of any of their benefits. Nvidia if you're going to bring stuff up, has physx, txaa, transparency supersampling, more reliable drivers in general, and consumer confidence. Sounds to me like calling amd "winning" is a bit premature.

It Is relevant because regardless of if the 780 will be the target, when we are talking high end graphics cards, the single fastest product will always be the benchmark, especially if the target is surpassed which seems to be the case here.
To the "market" the Titan is a cut down quadro, but acceptably so as it was the single fastest card. The gtx 780 is viewed as a "cut down Titan" because it is, acceptably so because it offers near Titan performance for a more affordable price, but the Titan is still king, and any contenders will have to measure up to the king.

Its way to early to declare a winner at this point. To me, the winner is the one that comes in with the better financial statements. Mantle isn't even released yet, and we hardly know the performance and more importantly the adoption rate from all developers(particularly when it isn't the console API). And the only thing that has released so far are a stable of rebrands which Nvidia can easily counter with their existing lineup.

In addition, gk110 specs were known to AMD for the last 16 months. At this point, AMD at the very least knew what they should aim for performance. GK110 price is a result of AMD failing in the past. What hawaii brings in my opinion is competition from AMD to the point where it can make money on its cards and perhaps generate revenue(not this piddly 10 million or so figure from their graphics department).

In otherwords, it brings competition back and is more so AMD catching up with Nvidia rather than outright winning. Catching up means for us the consumer, Nvidia can't charge rip off pricing anymore and it isn't a one man show at the top or high-end.

What this means is only one winning at this point is the consumer from lower pricing.

What it means for AMD, particularly now is they have a chance at competing in the high-end segment again. Its not a win yet. It's means they have finally shown up for the show to face Nvidia. Nvidia has definitely been winning the last 8 months by default of AMD not showing up. After Hawaii is released, Nvidia may be winning, losing or locked in a stalemate.

But to declare a winner at this point is simply short sighted(no reviews, no mantle performance, no prices and no supply figure), particularly when GK110 has so much left in the tank.

5-10 years of locked consoles that will be THE platform for games (which in turn will be easily ported to PC running GCN cards ;)) is a major advantage. I don't know how you guys fail to see that. Add in the possibility of Kaveri/Carizzo running offloaded physics code on their iGPU while being paired with GCN cards will make AMD really stand out in the crowd.

Remember, your hardware is as only as good as your software is ;). AMD is the target and preferred platform in both next gen consoles so yes, it's perfectly fine to say they will have a tangible advantage in those respects.

so the guru3d page says that those test systems in the article have been supplied by AMD... yet they are Intel 2011 chips... while I understand the reasoning am I the only one who finds it the least bit ironic?

That does seem a bit odd. Perhaps they did this for the "wow" factor of having higher overall scores for both cards, or for impartiality they had a third party handle it.
They may want to show they are not somehow "cheating" by running their hardware with their card.

Most of the press review gpus primarily on Intel platforms... simple as that. AMD want their new product to appear in as positive light possible.

I'm finding all the hoopla coming out about pushing for 2160p quite funny though. They show single gpu performance here as a marketing point and thats a strange one... last time I checked someone purchasing a top of the line display ( ie bleeding edge ) would be the same kind of customer who has no problem buying 2 or more high end gpus. Shelling out a few grand for a display for the purpose of gaming and *only* spending 500-600 on a gpu is messed up. Enough games can't be maxed out on a single gpu at 1440P let alone 2160P. Marketing :) Much more interesting would be the dual and tri results at 2160P. I'm all for high dot pitch but not at the cost of low performance.

TrueSound is a trial. It doesn't mean much today but AMD will see how it effects the market and also will think if they can improve it to a meaningful level. In this series AMD just put it in to prepare us to next level if they decided to continue this. For making us get used to name and the concept.

Mantle has a chance imo. What they are trying to do is very good especially to us. What they need is i little more push for making some good games use mantle and give mantle free to every manufacturer like nvidia, unlike nvidia did with physx. This mantle may change everything for good. Lots of different ideas comes to mind which it can lead to.

As I said, it comes down to competition. We can argue until eternity what exactly constitutes a refresh and what doesn't, but in the end, it is irrelevant for the market and the consumers. They are interested in competing products. And the fact is, AMD had no competition for Titan or for the 780 for 5-8 months just like Nvidia didn't have a competing product against the 5870 for 6 months.

And btw, what time difference is needed for a product being "late" in your opinion? 1 month, 2, 6?
