Yes. The project managers assign points to different kinds of work that they distribute. And these points are subject to change over time. They know that most folders will configure their rigs to maximize PPD so they assign more points to the types of work (work units, or "WU's") that are the most important to the project at that time. Sometimes this is just for beta test results - as they are testing a new client or WU they may temporarily assign higher points to get high participation until they work the kinks out. Bear in mind, this may change. The risk of going out and buying/building a farm that's geared towards a certain WU or client or project is that the PPDs may change, or the and leave you hanging... the other thing that many of us look for is PPD/$ or PPD/watt or whatever. Check out the F@Hinfo database. Interesting effort to track F@H scores on particular setups.

You pretty much control this. There are several different versions of the F@H client, with varying demands on system components. And just as with overclocking, how hard you push it, and how cool you can keep everything has the most to do with component lifespan and failure rates. There is no doubt that folding is intensive work, and as U&G says, "stable rigs are happy rigs". Power consumption does go up, but with some of the newer clients (like the nvidia GPU client), you can get a whole lot of points with relatively low power consumption.Quote:

If you want to do a cheap farm, forget CPU folding...
Get an althlon x2, something that can handle vista without giving you a head ache, 2 gigs of ram.
Now for the important stuff.
Mobo: 4 pci-e slot, like the msi k9a2
PSU: something that'll handle 4 cards, like corsair 750watt psu. :up:
Cards: 9600gso's or 8800gs (if you can find it) x4
That system will put out about 20K points for relatively low cost.
Ya I bet it would.. 4 cards even if GS models would push a lot. the eVGA 9600 GSO is at newegg.com for 35 bucks after MIR.. great deal. I almost got one for a backup. that would be a good deal to get for a farm.

the GPU2 seemed to run fine. my card only got to about 59c after about 2 hours of folding so thats not bad at all.
I do have a question. I let it go and went to sleep. I get up this morning and it's finished. but it never sent, and my net was down. I had to restart to get it back. That never, ever happens. was that cuz the folding? and how can I send it now and get the points and start my next. In Fahmon it's yellow and says finished.. (6380 PPD on just the GFX card. is that good for it at stock speed.) I can run this GTX from 576 Mhz to 740 in games fine. So I could probably do that while folding..
So what do I do. I restarted and it's still in Fahmon. but how do I send it now?
Edit* Now it restarted. the same one is going again. Now back to the beginning. it's at 9% already. Is it going to redo the entire one I already did? I'm confused a little here. Can't seem to figure out how to send it.
it probably sent, it should be in your log. but you need to gto control panel power options and set it to high performance, so your system and nic wont goto sleep and shutdown the client. you can set your screensaver to turn the monitor off, that's fine. just not the rest of the system.
this is what it looks like when it send, it does it on it's own. all you have to do is start the client and keep your system and internet connection running.

and then after a while when you turn in some units and eoc can track your points..

but I'd give it a day before eoc sees you as a new user. just make sure you're running the client and it's not going to sleep and stopping everytime you leave the pc alone.
Ya I just saw that about 10 mins ago.. I restarted my system. and opened fahmon and then GPU2 started on it's own something else. I looked in the log and it shows it not sending and all the retry's. then it trying to get a new WU and failing. but then after I restarted system I think it sent it as I saw that farther down now I restarted it.
After restart this is what my log says:

What can I expect from this 260?
shader is where you'll se the most gain in folding.
but you need to watch that log and make sure it completes from 1%-100% without spitting out an unstable machine before it gets to 100%. if it is, your oc is too high.
dont' worry about all the retries , that's stanfords servers getting busy and not allowing your client too connect. it puts you in line to wait and spits out that retry message until it's your turn to get a wu or send one.
the most imprtant thing is making sure it can go from 1-100% without errors.
also in fahmon, goto preferences and set to calculate ppd on last frame only and it wull give a quicker ppd averages.
this is what successful wu's looks like, notice I have some busy reties near the end also. those are fine. but if you cant get a 1-100% completion, then you need to back off the oc.

I'm not sure how high of a load my card can handle. so right now I'm runnin it at 650 Mhz core, usually game around 740 Mhz os sometimes less.. but thats not 12 hours or more straight like I am with this. so I'll turn it up later if I see this runs great. I can always load the shaders though. I know the limit there for this card.. it's aanything over 1550 it starts strugglin.
So how long Do GPU's generally last if properly cooled. I mean this is a great card. I'd hate to kill it by running 24/7 folding.. If I'm runnin that on this card at like 62c max like it's at now.. Would that be ok. Maybe I'll just do 12/7 instead..
What I really wanna do is use my old Q6700 and build a Folding rig. so I don't have to worry about all my good new stuff in this rig.. would my spare 250w PSU be enough to handle a Q6700 and a 8800GS. not a GT.. or no. that might not be enough power.. I can get a dsl3 gigabyte board and a Antec Noepower 430w PSU all for $109 as a bundle. maybe I should do that. throw my Q6700 in it. my spare 1GB of ram. although might need 2 for vista. then somehow get a 8800/9600.. Maybe I can find somewhere to donate one.. since it will be a 24/7 folding rig. It's a good cause and not me begging for something. there'd be results of my PPD. lol. Just a thought. I'll look into maybe getting it built. we'll see.

for folding you can leave core and ram at stock, shader is the only thing that matters.. and it doesn't produce heat like core does..
to find your max folding shader.
1. start the client and fahmon.
2. up your shaders 50mhz at a time and watch the client in fahmon for 5 minutes for errors (keep refreshing fahmon).
3. when you you try a 50mhz shader hop and the client errors within 5 minutes, back it down 100mhz. this is your folding shader oc. core and ram stay stock.
your gaming oc can be different. whatver. but that's what your folding oc needs to be. it'll put the least stress on your card and maximize ppd.

I don't know of any GPUs having a shortened life due to folding, as long as the temps are in check. I've never had a CPU/GPU fail from folding. I've popped a couple caps in some PSUs and burned out some fans but that's about the extent of the damage on my end :p:
250W PSU won't handle the Q6700 and 8800GS. The 430W could though more than likely.
A really strong 250w psu might handle a non overclocked Q6700 and 8800gs but I doubt it could handle folding on both maybe 1 but not both and you would risk EUE's due to starving the computer of power under heavy load. As SparkyJJO said I would go to at least a 430w psu if not bigger. I used to fold on my Shuttle with its 250w psu on a overclocked Q6600 but no video card and the Shuttle psu's are noted for being very robust they are server psu. I am having problems trying to fold on both a E8400 and a 8800gt in a shuttle with a 300w psu without any overclocking I can fold on one or the other but not both I am waiting on a 110w supplemental psu to help power the card which should be here sometime this week.
I would say anything that utilizes hw to 100% all the time will have a negative impact on it's lifespan. Everything has an MTBF. and this is always related to the conditions it's working under.
But as far as killing hw that wasn't about to die doing something else then folding ( let's say gaming for instance :) ). naw I don't think so. Or I should say, yeah sure it will but the chanche of you being able to tell the difrence between it failing due to prolongated 100% use through folding in comparison with it dying of natural causes are slim to none. Every gpu will die eventually. It's like a car, every car has a service period, after which you need to bring it in for checks on whatever, if you drive the car on it's limits all the time, you could shorten that timespan, but at no time it should make the car stop running completely ( as you're still only using the product for it's intended purposes, driving ).
The car analogy doesn't really hold up, as in a car you have components you can exchange which will extend the MTBF. Maybe adding some caps to smoothen out the voltages ( and knowing that folding seems to brings along very fast current switching, faster then for instance normal gaming that could very well help. )

To put it in short terms - yes it will reduce lifespan, but odds are not by enough to worry about. Like overclocking a CPU can reduce lifespan by a couple years but when the CPU lasts for 10+ years already anyway I hope you aren't still using the same CPU that long down the road. Similar with a graphics card I'm sure. Of course, those with lifetime warranties on their cards should have no issues at all :D

Sparky here is also a master in replacing caps, maybe it would be a nice test ( you do have two identical 9600gso's right? ) to maybe cap mod one and leave the other stock, and watch if anything will happen to either one..
I'm more leaning towards believing that with f@h, the gpu itself isn't going to die quickest but the other components on the card ( eg the power circuitry ).
Well My point of view is different, If I didn't use the component it could die in 3 years , which is in EU out of warranty but F@H makes sure it will die sooner = dead card or anything = RMA still in the 2 years of warranty = New Card for me ! :hehe:

I noticed one fascinating thing guys ... When I wake up I power my PC on with my feet [ must be feet ! ] log in start the SMP and GPU client and go to work , I usually leave my doors open and when I return it's freaking hot in that particular room, so I heat it until I go to bed and in the morning it's still warm ... I don't need an A/C or the central heating ! The GTX is simply amazing, I need another one for a couple more degrees.
I do something for the ill and still spare a lot because I'm not using the heating , and the electricity is freaking cheap here, 1$ = 3kW

Nyeh , never, I love the GTX 200 series, I'm amazed by them ... raw power, it chews and spits out single GPU card like a V8 Chevy sucks and eats european trolleys [ you call it cars ?! ] ... As for the GX2 , nuuh ... two old sandwitch cards, Because I don;t care abotu the price I'm fine with it even through the R4870 is better bang for bucks but it sucks at folding, and folding its what the PC does when the lord is not at home :hehe:
And for gaming ... I have 60 FPS at 1680x1050 in everything [ cept Crysis and MS X ] and I use Vsync so if I have 60 with GTX280 or 60 with 4870X2 or 4870 does it count ? Nyeh ...

Sounds stupid maybe, but when I turned into a addict I had to resort to reading glasses sometimes to prevent my eyes getting to irritated from the crappy crt I was using... It did help. my eyes were allot less tired. But that was a crt and not a good one, lcd's are already much easier for your eyes.

I missed the two above posts as this reply was open while I was handling my pm's there.
They actually rely on the reports badly. It's true their collection servers will know it eue'd but it does not send with it the log content, only the wu results, and an identifier who's account it was folded on. So most of the time it's the reports from the john doe's like us which enable them to pin point a particular issue going wrong. I am willing to report issues like this for you if you're not having the time for it or don't feel like it, just pm the logfile and I relay it, don't forget whe're doing this for a good cause :up:
If you think it really does something then the log excerpt is in my post above, I'm just not as optimistic about this as you. I'm just wondering what would happen if I had a really big GPU farm... I think it would need baby sitting around the clock. :yepp:
yeah it's disappointing to see a wu get reported over and over and never get pulled... that used to tick me off.. just one of those PG disappointments I've learned to accept as normal. it's sad sometimes.
that's why I'm not to disciplined about reporting them anymore. though I still do occasionally.

I have to single out RR in particular. :yepp: He was putting up points I thought I was capable of but had never achieved. In the first race I just hoped to match his output and came up short. In the current race, I jumped him out of the gate and he has responded improving his output considerably. :worship: RR is a true competitor.
