if that's true, good luck on RUNNING it on stock cooler.
130W more than 5870?? That's indeed double, like someone said a few pages before!!
But I doubt that's a real case scenario. Probably some "power virus" like Furmark that wakes the beast within Fermi :D

AMD to counter with overclocked Radeon HD 5870
Today we can reveal that AMD has chosen to counter NVIDIA's new graphics card with an overclocked version of Radeon HD 5870. In other words, no HD 5890 or such but just an overclocked HD 5870.
AMD says that its Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, with GPU clocked between 875-900MHz, will be enough to keep even pace with NVIDIA. The memory clocked will be increased slightly from 4800MHz to 5000MHz.
Considering Radeon HD 5870 launched six months ago with 850MHz GPU clock frequency is pretty remarkable, especially since 900MHz is far from everything the Cypress GPU has to give.
Whether AMD's overclocked Radeon HD 5870 card will be able to stand up to NVIDIA's new flagship remains to be seen, but AMD doesn't seem that worried about NVIDIA's first GeForce Fermi card......
I has posted...

That is not it.

Nope only comments like this are EPIC FAIL. There's plenty of reasons people desire to stick with Nvidia vs ATI. Last ATI I had was X1950XTX or X1900XTX whatever it was and the shaded graphics and AA were F'd in BF2 and Catalyst drivers were garbage.
I think most people will also agree SLI works better than Crossfire but of course that depends on the title in general though I think SLI has better gains in performance.
Aaaa so basically its a decedent of 2900 XTX :yepp:

Lets see that nice fan
http://xtreview.com/images/Hd-2900-x...-2900xt-19.jpg
Can any one link gtx4x0 fan...BTW what was the A rating on that ?
even the gtx280 is way cooler, although it has a huge die size as well. hum, doesn't look that good :( especially if you consider the rather good looking heatsink.
i hope that's just due to some low-noise fan speed profile (like the radeon 4850 has...), where the fan speed is set pretty low and can be increased without suffering from the noise that much.
doesn't change the power consumption though. 130w more than a 5870 is quite nasty as, imo, the 5870 eats a lot of energy already.
i think i won't be able to run that thing on my 550w psu :p:
i'm playing bf2 with an ati for over 1,5 years now. full eyecandy with 4xAA (adaptive aa), 16xAF never had a single issue. the only thing that doesn't work on an ati is the shadow smoothing technique used in bf2. bf2's shadows look weird anyways so it's not that important :p:
:rotf:
At least if you watercool a 480 you will cut out 20 watts of power consumption from the fan :p:
"Delta electronics inc" says it all. Performance before silence. :)
This fan has to be very loud at 100% I bet (knowing Delta this will probably run up to like 5500rpm if it is 70/72mm or whatever), maybe closed headphones starts becoming a recommendation soon. Luckily Delta fans usually scale well noise wise if you lower speeds and they have a tendency to last like forever.
Oh and now I see why the cards have so high TDP. :yepp:
until more waiting and thread part 4?
Last time I heard about "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT", GT320 and GT330 were launched... yeah me too - dunno what that is.
=====================
FYI I said many many times. Its just plain old boring video cards, thats all. Sure gonna be faster - just like every year, nothing special.
Everybody had it so hyped up, as if it will do your taxes and teach your kids piano. Sorry mates.
Aint never gonna be another 9700pro or G80 launch, ever.. they're old, nobody would buy them.. its history
After 3 days we will find out when we can expect the reviews and after we read the reviews "after a week or so more" we can find out when will be the availability of the cards wait another week or so and then we can find out that because of limited availability all gtx 4x0 are sold....
The chips in the leaked pic are really GF100,the leaker already got fired by the company..
GT215 die is totaly different.
http://pics.computerbase.de/2/7/4/8/1/2_m.jpg
130 more means gtx 480 can't get pci e certificate. if thing that you say is true that makes charlie hundred percent accurate about heat and power draw
Hmm, that 130 w more, that's the total system consumptions comparison, right ? not just the comparison beetween the power consumption of the cards themselves. The system with Fermi in it might work a bit harder so not all of the power difference goes to the card itself. And it still has to account the efficiency of the PSU.
But i think, and it seems, ATi is more conservative with its TDPs on HD 58xx series compared to nVidia Fermi's TDPs.
Exactly.
Hope this is true, though, would be worth the wait and increased power consumption at least.
A few months ago or so...
ATI has this as well.
:(
I don't care much about extra 130W, but another melting card after my 8800 Ultra... No, thanks.
5870's fan @ 100% is crazy, also, though.
but the 5870 results also have the same 17% off in efficiency so the difference is not 100W, it's a bit more.
Look at it this way.
Let's give some theoretical numbers.
5870 = 400W total power consumption x 83% = 332 real power consumption.
GTX 480 = 530W total power consumption x 83% = 439.9 real power consumption.
difference would be 107.9 W, with these theoretical numbers.
Anandtech in their 5870 review said a 5870 consumed 401W in full load, so my numbers are pretty ok i guess
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643&p=26
But, we do not know if that guy took into account this lack of efficiency from the PSU, when stating that GTX 480 consumes 130W more than the 5870.
We need to wait 3 more days to really find out what is going on.

I don't trust Chiphell for some reason (that I don't remember) but.... well.....
yeah right!!! 5870 has min fps 20 in crysis!!! :hehe: 2fps at least...
Is 5870's and 5970's min FPS really the same in Crysis? Probably some "loading" situation...
Ouch indeed. Especially if they needed to bump clocks and power consumption so high just to reach parity.
kinda matches phk's gtx470 benchmarks:
-------- min / avg fps
gtx470: 18.0 / 24.0 fps
hd5870: 20.5 / 30.5 fps
gtx470: 18.6 / 25.5 fps
hd5870: 19.6 / 30.2 fps

each time I browse this thread makes me more confident that Fermi is the new R600...
My bad, it sounded like it made you glad :(. Yeah, I still am holding a little hope but not a lot of confidence but for the B3D quote from Felix:

OK, some first hand info, but my source is still under NDA, so not much in-depth details.
GTX470 is ~10% faster than stock HD5870, benched in Crysis.
The noise level under load is similar to GTX285 -- noticeable but not irritating.
Did a quick test using my program and ambush map, that's what I got

//////////// Summary \\\\\\\\\\\\\

HD 5970 data seems to be ok, maybe they are running a lower clocked CPU (mine is at 4.2 ghz) hence the lower min fps.
If your sig is gonna be right, then I might be back askin myself again when can I have my first DX11 videocard.:(
I thought might have one by April-May TBH, ATI or nVidia no preference there, as long as it wont cost me >390$, currency considered since I'm not from the US.
Epic fail n very effn sad if true, have to wait 3 more days though.
According to our Czech buddy, 470 & 480 overclock decently, and there is a 512sp bios floating around? - hehe can't wait to see this one
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=249263
true or not we are not seeing any good info for gtx4x0 series in 3 days i dont think that will change. my opinion nvidia doesnt bother about gtx4x0 series because they understand nothing good will be from them. they are producing these just for saying yes "we have dx11 on the market too". improved cards will come in a short time.
QFT
I think Fermi is a very robust design and definitely too ambitious for 40nm, but should really begin to shine with higher clock speed and 28nm, so yes Nvidia will not release an 5000 series killer, but they will have an architecture future proof and to them that is the difference between staying strong or not in the market.
AFAIK the 480sp decision was given fairly late, I doubt the GTX 480 will have its parts fused. I think we'll be able to make it 512SP.
As for the GTX 470, I think from the start it was designed to have 448SP so the SPs are prolly fused
Well at the moment theres not a "real" DX11 game yet, so if you have yourself between a GTX295 - GTX 260 or ATi 4870X2 - 4870, theres no need to jump the bandwagon in my opinion, since most games we getting are crap ports thanks to consoles. But if you're planning to jump the boat I would consider a ATi over Nvidia right now (maybe this could change after friday but my hopes are really low).
ATi has some advantages over Fermi right now which are:
Pros
- Low consumption
- Better temperatures
- Cost less (though they are a bit overpriced)
- Eyfinity capable with ONE card
Cons
- Driver Team sucks (although they are making some progress with 10.2 & 10.3)
- Size (5870 & 5970 size is ridiculous imo)
Fermi (Based of what we seen so far)
Pros
- Size (they have the same size of past gen or even smaller)
- "Better" performance than ATi offerings (not by much though)
- Nice drivers support team
Cons
- Power consumption
- Temperatures
- Vision Surround requires SLI
- Price (they are not bad for previous products releases but still more than competition)
If Fermi ends up to be a flop is nvidia and their "Big GPU chip is the way" bull:banana::banana::banana::banana: theory fault, the evidence is more than clear, I even think that the integration CPUGPU has to do with this, why not make TESLA products with this feature since the people who buy these kind of products are the ones that are going to benefit for such features, not the gaming crowd. I remember posting that I was smelling the fermi was going to be the new R600 and some claimed I was pessimistic, but every time news about fermi surfaces has more negatives things than positive...
That just seem like the perfect rumor for nVidia & fans to spread, so that those who are thinking of buying the 480 now has a reason to really click the "purchase" button thinking there's more to this card then there really is...
Anyway what was the last GFX card that allowed additional core unlocks from BIOS or other means?
Personally power consumption isn't a priority concern for me, my systems pretty much all consume copious amounts of power and go to S3 sleep when not in use.
If one was worried deeply about heat dump and power consumption getting involved in threads regarding high end equipment of any sort at XS is really the wrong place to be.
Its almost akin to complaining about the noise and fuel consumption of a top fuel dragster and wondering why it can't be as quiet and economic as a honda civic or even a corvette.
I'll reserve my judgement until after reliable results are up....
I dont think its that bad, the FX series sucked so bad. ATi handed nVidia their arse for a while those times. The key for the GTX 4xx is going to be pricing, if nvidia can stay competitive with their pricing, they should do really good, besides the enthusiast crowd, nVidia has more name power than ATi in the general publics eyes, around here is so-cal atleast 90% of my customers know nvidia, they dont know what ati is, when i offer it, they always turn it down based on name, and go for nvidia only because they have had an nvidia card or the name is more familiar.
Weren't their drivers responsible for the vast majority of Vista crashes? I've seen no evidence ever that supports the theory that somehow nv's drivers are vastly superior. The only thing i've seen is that some prefer nv's control panel, and they wave the profile flag as much as possible.
Unigine Heaven 2.0 is leaked, Is anyone with dx11 interested in the changes?

downloading now
Where are DX11 GTX400 benchmark leaks ffs?! Wheres BC2, AvP, Metro, Dirt 2, Battleforge at different resolutions and AA/AF levels.
I'm wondering if it'll be Friday that we can order ones with Saturday delivery or USPS Priority for Saturday, or no stock till Monday (29th)...
I do believe you are correct.
As far as the 480 being potentially unlockable that would be pretty cool but not literally of course . I'd expect you'd need water / LN2 to tame it with the current heatsink with the full 512sp if the heat rumors are to be believed ( 92C in anything outside of furmark would be scary ) There is a reason the 5870 / 5970 are as long as they are ( cooling space )
I wish that vision surround would have been a hardware solution like eyefinity and not software. I'd bet a single 480 would do well with 3 displays for various reasons. The fact 2 will be required though is unfortunate. 3 1080p TN panels can be had for the price of a single high end display which offers way more desktop and gaming space for the money making 3 monitor gaming not nearly as far fetched today as it was years ago when it was matrox only territory and ungodly expensive ( I remember seeing my first 3x 19" 1280x1024 lcd setup years ago running MS flight sim and thinking that was completely insane heheh... )
Didn't they say it wouldnt be until April 6 that we'd see stock by the way or has this changed? I know they are launching at PAX but I do believe it was mentioned that it will take a week or so for availability ( due to shipping and such )
[OT] tesselation works on 4850 with opengl in unigine heaven 2 rc1, interesting, did they use fixed tesselator.[/OT]
Downloaded and did a quick run before I head to work.

We have a thread for the 2.0RC1 benchmark here folks : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=247960
I said GT200... but G92 could do it also.. I dont know if its a fixed function or not, the powerpoint doesnt specifically talk of it.. But i bet they can do tesselation in OpenGL also.. and thats what matter isnt it?

i do think nvidia makes the sharper looking heatsink
Wow that 470 cooler is AWESOME. Seriously I didn't think I could be so enthusiastic about a cooler graphic. :ROTF:
Hopefully the 480 can safely run in tri sli configs and doesn't rely too much on the exposed heatsink to aid cooling. What I'd like to know however is if the heatsink design had the full part in mind or if they tailored it to the 480SP varient...
Sexy but I haven't seen my graphics card since the day I installed it.
