I read through this entire post, and thanks to Zodden and Rajada's info on page 4, I'm currently running Prime 95 at 8.5x500 on my E8500 at 1.375v. I'm no super experienced overclocker, and their settings have given me a great place to start.

I have one question. What is the benefit of running a higher FSB with a lower CPU multi vs a higher multi and lower FSB? I see most people doing the former, but haven't really found an explanation as to why. Is it to be able to run the RAM at a faster speed?

that's nice of you to say that. i didn't think your ram was bad but i used to have similar problem that i could not boot a board that i configured it to run ddr1200 and i recalled trying about the same things that i told you to try before. i think it's okay to use 2.3v vdimm on the HyperX PC9600 kit when you're using it for ddr1200, i also use 2.3v for a long time on a few different boards,
on this UD3R i find it that i can use the ram kit at ddr1200 with below 2.1v, however, i still like to keep the vdimm at not below 2.2v. but i'm sure each board and each ram kit is different, only the user knows best on how to use their own hardware.
anyway, i’m glad you didn’t give up on the overclock and then you got what you wanted.

what is the best overclocking bios for the UD3R?

I read that some guys could run tRD8 with FSB 500 RAM 1000 (1:1) CAS4 but I could´t get that to work but then I noticed that I could run 1:1 with two different latch (strap), 333 or 400.

With 400 I could run one step lower then with 333, hence slightly better performance, it´s awesome to get that low tRD at that FSB with 1:1.


I think this is very interesting, so I thought that I dedicate a post with this even thou it isn´t new for some but for some maybe it´s.

for you guys that have gotten over 400 fsb what voltage did you use one your MCH or IC? I cant seem to boot (using 6 multi) at anything above 390 not even with 1.4 MCH all else stock.

I used 1.54 MCHv for 515FSB with a 7 multi and about 1.46v (i think) for 500FSB.

Got the second board today and have the same exact problem, MCH Core above 1.48v = no boot, black screen or boop loop trying to recover.

All I can think of is the weak PSU 520w not enough for it.

So strange. :shrug:

@fatguy, thanks i will do some more testing later on, right now i have 356x9 with stock 1.1 MCH and well my vcore is 1.44 underload(bad chip:( ). When you guys use a low multiplier and a high FSB is that done to Oc the Ram and run the rest of the system at higher speeds or is it just better to use highest FSB and low multi.

I will test on a Silverstone 1000W today and settle this strange matter.

Now I also noticed that raisin vcore voltage in ET6 will cause it to reset to default voltage, so I can't even raise any voltages from ET6 anymore.

It shouldn´t be a problem to leave it at auto, auto sets it to 100, if you want to be on the safe side set it to 100.

Ok heres what I discovered so far:

Dunno how I'm the only one with this issue but I tried the 1000W PSU and same problem happened.

So I played around BIOS and discovered that the combination of RAM Straps and MCH Core causes the issue (no boot or beeps or blank screen).

If I load Original Default and raise MCH Core alone i will hault above 1.440v.

If I change the Ram strap other the the one set on Auto it will work fine.

With other straps the MCH Core can be raised everywhere I want.

Nobody had this? :shrug: Is that a specific problem with my type of Ram hardware?

I'm having an annoying MCH Core/Mem Strap errors that where keeping me to test my setup further.

And I know how picky you are on stability so I would greatly appreciate your input.

I posted 4350mhz a few pages back with all my settings which could give you a good start. 4400mhz is all I can call/claim I have got truly stable although 4450~4500 is perfectly stable for everything other than prime/orthos/IBT etc.

I have/did notice something divider/strap dependent I think it was performance level getting set to tight or something like that which stumped me for a minute but other than that I've easily pumped 1.75~1.8v through my NB no problem.

Right now I can get my CPU to run a loop of prime small & then fail large or the other way around depending on how I set up the board for 500 x 9. I am real busy in Jan 09 so wont really get to play with the UD3P until the end of the month & then I think I'll pop the board under my SS & see if that helps.

All in all though the UD3P is an awesome board.

MCH voltage = North Bridge Voltage, just a different terminology on this board.

Depending on how much MB of Ram you have in your board and how much your overclocking the cpu.

Everything till 1.6vmch for this chipset is a piece of cake.

The MCH volt is the volt for the North bridge. U have to rasie it when you increase FSB, increase RAM speed and/or add more ram sticks. I asked about a week ago what was a safe mch volt and I was told that 1.6v was the max. I normally run 1.3v atm, cause thats all i need.

100. I thought at auto it would stay at that but evidently not because my Seagate sata 1Tb is so far unreadable by windows and my previos windows xp installation became corrupted.

400*9 attempt with q6600 with f6 bios if any ones wondering what happened, I used a voltage guide for 65nm quads someone posted in this thread a while back.


What exactly does Cpu Termination, Reference and Pll values do?

Do they have to be in some kind of ratio to each other in order for high oc to work?

Thanks to the [XC] Hicks121, Ghostleader, and LiquidReactor for responding to my question on PCI Freq......I haven't had any issues, but I'll try setting it to 100 to start.

I also want to say that this thread has been great reading and I've learned quite a bit. I haven't been able to push the envelope like some people here, but I'm quite happy with my UD3R/E8500 combo at 4.2Ghz (8.5 x 495 stable).

To get your cpu ref at 0.815 what did you set in bios? I notice that setting 0.815 in bios still renders 0.76 in EasyTune

To change those values in in the BIOS to be reflected in Easytune to actual %'s you will need to set your Vtt back to stock, then adjust the % of the Ref. Voltage you want to change, then move Vtt back to where you had it and it will then be changed in ET as well. .815 CPU Ref would be .978 in the BIOS with Vtt at 1.2, then raise Vtt back up to what you use and once you get in windows you will see .815 in EasyTune.

Same applies to all other Ref Voltages and being able to see % changes in Easytune


CPU Termination (Vtt) Automatically changes the following if manually set >>>
CPU Reference Voltage (.63% of Default Vtt/1.20)
CPU Reference2 Voltage (.67% of Default Vtt/1.20)
MCH Reference Voltage (.63% of Default Vtt/1.20)

DRAM Voltage Automatically changes the following if manually set >>>
MCH/DRAM Reference Voltage (.50% of Default Dram Voltage)
DRAM Termination Voltage (.50% of Default Dram Voltage)
Channel A Reference Voltage (.50% of Default Dram Voltage)
Channel B Reference Voltage (.50% of Default Dram Voltage)

If you want a higher or lower than stock % / Value for any of the above settings and see it be reflected in EasyTune you need to set the Dram Voltage or Vtt back to stock (Or above or below to find and be able to choose alternate % Values), then adjust desired setting to the % / Value you wish to use.

Then once you have selected a % range you want to use for said setting then go back and raise your Vtt or Dram Voltage back to what you choose to use and the corresponding settings will self adjust

I am about to give up on this board. This is my second one (UD3R). The first one came DOA. This second one ran fine till yesterday. I tried to boot up and nothing happened ie. monitors read no signal. I clear battery for 12hrs, as I was at work and such. Put things back together this morning and still nothing. One point yesterday with the issues started, it would not boot. I entered into bios and set to fail-safe settings. Saved and exited. It booted up, went into window, then 30 secs later the computer locked up. Tried to clear cmos/battery again and nothing. Back to today. So I powered on and computer set there cycling. It never went to the bios screen. I thought maybe I was having hdd failure b/c i can't hear them spooling up at all, but I can't even get to the bios without the hdd's installed.

Is my second board failing or what?

it's a very new ram kit on this board i haven't tested HCI memtest, prime's and Linx on it yet.
however, this ram kit passed a DOS memtesting program (when it's running DDR2-1200) at 1.98v vdimm on all 333 strap (375fsb mem multi 3.2x and 500fsb mem multi 2.4x), 266 strap (400fsb mem multi 3.0x), and 400 strap (450fsb mem multi 2.66x), and i just added a little bit more volts to the bios's vdimm settings and use vMCH at 1.30v (thinking about lowering this value down to 1.26v later on) and booted into Windows and run the tests.
i have 4 other 4GB (2x2GB) kits that won't do these. as of now, it seems to me that it should be possible to stable this ram kit for 500fsb DDR2-1200, and i hope it can make it at least at the 500fsb setting.

about the DIMM slots, the ram is too fat to fit in yellow slots, it hit the board stock sink (heatsink cover).
i actually like to use yellow slots, i find that it works better for my ram overcloking sometimes, so i'll probably also try using yellow slots later on.

Not a definate answer, but are you *absolutely* sure that your OC is 112% stable?

I ask because I'm in the process of OC'ing my own Q9650 - although on a DQ6 mobo, and as you probably know, small changes can make or break the stability.

If your board is cycling at boottime, it's usually an unstable setting.

Could also be heat related - do you have proper cooling/airflow?

Another thing you could try is to remove the mobo from your cabinet and lay it all out on a cardboard box or similar and fire it up.

I had great difficulty getting my rig stable when inside my cabinet after exchanging my CPU-cooler and the reason was most likely some sort of short between the mobo and cabinet. The solution was to remove the setup from the cabinet - no problems with stability.

Have actually sold the cabinet now as it was too small anyway and now it's running, dressed in its birthday suit :D

So 'Normal' settings worked better for you then 'Auto' or 'Manual'?

What does this board recognize as Normal?

Sorry for the questions I had to give up my second board and get the first one back as it turns out the MCH core thing was just a strap related problem so I'm waiting again my old board.

It has been rock solid at 3.6ghz for 2 weeks since I got the new mobo in. Grounding is not an issue as I put electric tape underneath the mobo at the connection points. It does not even boot into bios now.

Have you tried booting with a *completely* minimal setup (no fd, dvd etc.)?

Could it be a faulty PSU?

You can short the green wire with a ground wire (ATX 24-pin plug) and fire up the PSU. Then you can measure the voltages on the 3.3, 5.0 and 12.0V rails and check if anything is out of the ordinary.

Huh..finally can run 32MB super PI.,it took me couple of days to set & run.,set & run..everything else pass.,blend.,linpack.,and OCCT..:clap:

just an updated on my previous post...

changed the OS system from 32-bit Vista to XP x64 so later on i can test more ram in windows

also, did some changes in voltage and ref. settinga at BIOS.
then ran a double 32M SuperPi test and the system is now just started to run a prime95 blend test.

Hello, I just this mobo cpu setup last night. It is intel burn test stable for at least 30 passes. I didnt try more yet. Seems to be a nice mobo.

Ya, it sure is! But he asked how the user above him got 81.5 in his Easytune Image (Apparently that is what he was using ATM)

So that is why I told him how to get 81.5 shown in Easytune, by setting that % in the BIOS.

You're welcome, I just set Normal rather than Auto as Auto sets un-necessary high voltages for a few things. I have most of the board set manually now but to be honest it has hardly made any real noticeable difference so far so probably not worth the time.

Well, I got it up again. Yanked out one stick of my HZs and it posted. Loaded fail-safe settings and booted.

So my question is, what is the issue? I usually have my black pis installed 2x2gig sticks. The first issue occurred and I put in my 2x1gig sticks of HZs. Someone suggested pulling a stick, and it boots now.

So are my ram slots going bad?

It was only a thought :shrug:. I'v never heard of a ram slot dieing, but i guess it could happen :shrug:.

Edit: When u took a stick out and it worked, did u try putting the one that worked into the slot you think could be dead?

I just tried both sticks of HZ in slots 1 and 3. No boot. Pulled stick from slot 3 and put into slot 1. Booted.
I am going to try slots 2 and 4 now and see what happens.



Edit: So slots 2 and 4 no boot.

I pulled all sticks out and am only running one stick of my Black Pis in slot 1 and it boots. So the issue is, any type of ram will work if it is only one stick. If I use 2 sticks, it won't post to the bios.
Any idea what would cause this?


Bios settings are all stock right now, nothing done to them.

I'm having the same problems with mine. My UD3R often does this endless non-boot routine with it starting up and stopping. This seems to happen when you try an overclock it doesn't like. Perhaps this is a memory issue...trying to boot with advanced ram timings, but the bios loads at 1.8v? I thought it was my ram, and I did get a mis-matched set to work for awhile.

Don't matter now. The bios is garbage and the board is not refined. I've pulled this UD3 board out and am selling it. I installed a Asus P5k-Premium using all the same parts and have a higher overclock at a lower voltage that the Gigabyte-me. I'm at 4320 MHz @ 1.34v with my Asus and it boots every time, even with a radical o/c...but I guess I should be posting this in another thread from now on.

bad board, bad dimm slots or bad ram kit or these 2 specific ram kits have an issue with default bios. can't tell you exactly without trying the hardwares.
but, try 1 stick ram in first dimm slot, clear cmos, and startup the system, if things seems normal during the first startup, then just left bios at default settings and test this ram stick with memtest program in DOS,
whatever results come out of the mem testing. then replace the stick of ram with another stick, clear cmos, start the system and run a memtest on this stck. if both sticks don't fail memtest? the ram kit is most likely ok.

then try this, with the last stick of ram in first dimm slot and you're already sure that it passes the prior memtest, reflash your bios (in DOS mode if you can) with the same bios version or any release bios version's that you like. after the flashing is completed, power off the system, install the 2 sticks ram in the 2 yellow dimm slots, clear cmos, and startup the system. then please tell me what's the results that you get from and after doing all these. apologies for this long post, i don't know how to make it shorter.

right now i'm testing the ram kit running at 480fsb 5:6 DDR2-1152MHz (testing its stock/spec ram speed) at 1.82v VDimm and 1.20v vMCH.

about you thinking on buying 2x2GB kit, it would be best if you can get the G.Skill PC2-9600 PI kit.
this OCZ PC2-9200 is not available as a new retail ram kit any more afaik. and even you can get one at eBay or some sort it's not a guarantee you will have the ram kit running at DDR2-1200 and at low volts. for the G.Skill (PC2-9600) PI one you can exchange it at least.

Thanks for the suggestion. I memtested both sets of ram and they passed fine.
I am going to reflash bios and give it a shot that way. I am at work today so I will do this when I get home.

This whole scenarios is just odd to me. It runs great fro 2 weeks then this issue occurs. 1 stick of ram, any size amount runs fine in any slot but as soon as I put in 2 sticks it doesn't boot.

Test OCZ PC2-9200 (DDR2-1150) Flex II 4GB kit... running at around its rated clock speed.

480 CPU FSB 5:6 DDR2-1152, BIOS set Turbo, 5-5-5-18 / 5-5-9-78-5 tRD 8 at 1.84v.

Dual instances of Prime95 custom (with a quite large amount of system memory are used in the test) only.

this CPU FSB should work great (and plenty) with a Quad E0, as i plan to use this ram kit when i buy a new Quad and may be another UD3R board (this will be my 3rd UD3R's buying btw), since myself not a hardcore overclocker and like to concentrate on a system that uses low volts, low heat and less cooling requirements but still offers plenty performance, 480fsb on a Quad E0 should work.
i think it would be too great a problem if i want to run 480fsb with 4:5 (memory running at DDR2-1200MHz) when i overclock this ram kit with a Quad, anyways, i'll check it out whenever i can.

Well here is what I have after several days of tweaking/testing. Everything is auto except for Vcore, MCH Core, MCH Ref manually set at .75, CPU PLL manually set at 1.50, 2.00d strapping, RAM manually set to SPD.

If I try to go up from 4.00GHZ at 8x to 4.25GHZ at 8.5x with everything else the same, I have to jump way up to 1.375v Vcore. I'm kind of disappointed with that in that my goal was 4.25GHZ with lower Vcore. I may lower the FSB a bit to see if I can up the CPU from 4.00GHZ and still keep the Vcore low.

Mobo issue update:

I flashed my bios to F5 successfully. I still can not have 2 sticks of ram in the motherboard. It boots up fine with one stick, of any kind, but as soon as it has 2 sticks, it won't post to the bios.

This is my 1st attempt beyond 4Ghz barrier.,only can successfully boot with 9x multi with PL9.,i try with 8x525 cannot boot into windows..it's not very impressive result.,all scores below 9-10k..

I'm using 4GB of Corsair PC8500 RAM at 2.1v running 5-5-5-15

I've seen a lot of people pushing higher CPU VCores around here and I was hoping to stay at 1.35 or under, but couldn't find a good combo to get there. I'm comfortable with where I'm at with this setup, since my temps aren't running real high (CPU Temp is around 32C at idle and hitting the low 50's under stability testing....except for IntelBurnTest when it reaches 60C...Ouch!)

i think, since you're sure your ram kit is okay, it's time to RMA the board, it has to go back first.

on a side note: about the hardware that's listing in your sig, don't you think your power supply may be a little bit too small?

Yeah, This is my second EP45-UD3R. First one was DOA! I think I have 4-5 days left on my 30-days from newegg.
About the PSU, the Corsair HX series are known to be awesome PSUs. The 520watts it puts out is actually contiunious and not a peak load like other manufacturers spec. Also, I basically had all the same components in my rig except an Abit IP-35E and Q6600, and it ran flawless. The EP45-UD3R and Q9550 should not be drawing anymore power than the previous mobo/cpu combo I had, so I don't see how that could be an issue.


Edit: So it seems b/c this mobo is a RMA replacement from my first DOA, I am not eligible for another RMA. That sucks.

Thanks for the info. I have run OCCT and Prime 95, but still have to run IntelBurnTest. I'm on water with dual MCR320s, and I idle at 31c and prime and OCCT at about 40c. I wanted to run about 500fsb to nearly max my RAM, but like you, simply can't find a combination that keeps me under 1.35v Vcore at 4.25GHZ.

There are so many opinions about voltages that I'm not sure that to believe is OK when it comes to Vcore. Some say under 1.35v, some 1.40, and some 1.45v as long as the temps are OK.

It sounds like your system is alot better equiped to handle the high temps than mine (I'm just air cooled with Cool Master case, some 120mm case fans, and a ZEROtherm Zen FZ120 CPU Cooler). I believe I read on the Intel website a month or so back that the E8500 is rated to support voltage up to 1.3625V, but the absolute max is 1.45v. If that's really the case, than the 1.3725 I'm currently running isn't too far over the rated line.

I figure that even if I shorten the life of my CPU by (let's just say) 25% because I OC it, it should still run for another 5 years plus.....a E8500 CPU 5 years from now won't be much of a CPU anyway. Honestly, in almost 15 years of building computers, I've never lost a CPU (motherboards - yes, ram - yes, video cards - yes, power supplies - yes, hard drives - of course, but I've never just blown a CPU....maybe I've just been lucky).

I think the biggest concern is throwing just way too much voltage through the system that you actually fry something (either by your voltage settings or by maybe a bad PS). I was just reading one of the tech sites where they described how they pushed it too far and fried a $600 CPU...ouch! Luckily, I got a great deal on my E8500 and was even more fortunate to receive a E0 revision of it.....just dumb luck I guess.

Good luck to you and please post if you have any success bringing down the core voltage while keeping the speed up there.

I haven't seen much talk about E2180 CPU's on this thread (and I don't have any experience with them personally), but if I was in your shoes, I'd start by installing EasyTune and trying one of the default OC profiles and testing with HyperPI, Prime95, or Orthos to see if it's stable.....work your way up or down from there.

The MCH Core is the voltage for the North Bridge. Normally, you need to increase it as you increase your FSB (or from what I read here, even when you add more sticks of RAM to your system). I've also read many posts that state it's pretty safe to raise the North Bridge up to 1.6v, but I'm at 1.2v on my system.

There are alot of varibles to contend with on these boards. It usually takes a while to find the best combination. Take some time and go through this thread.....there's a ton of information as you go through the 43 pages.

1.3725v Vcore being OK then makes sense. I've got a nice watercooling setup, and it really shows when you start stress testing. I ran IntelTestBurn a while ago and it only added maybe 7-8c to my OCCT and Prime95 temps. I maxed at 51c running IntelTestBurn at 1.3725v Vcore. I just hate that it takes so much Vcore just to go .25GHZ from 4 to 4.25.

Thank you on the case. It was a lot of work, but I am still enjoying the result 8 months later.

So you ask in the GB UP45 thread if they prefer the GB board over the Asus, that's like entering a mercedez dealer and ask if you shouldn't be better wit a BMW...

Most users here are very happy with their setups, this board absolutely flies with quads but in my own humble experience the Asus ones are easier to setup...

With the PCI-E Being too narrow you're talking about the bandwith of the 2nd slot for Xcrossfire action... have a look at both boards layouts and see what might work best with ya cards... I think the Gb will be a better option

Where do you find those mem. test in Everest? I have both,the old one and Ultimate but its a trial verson.

I had alot of memery dumps/blue screems last night. I upped the voltage to 2.1 on the ram and so far it hasnt acted up.

Just what it says, controls PCI-e main clock.

Teorically you well get a very small gain in benching in FPS, seen some benches at 120Mhz run faster then 100Mhz.

That if you don;t use sata drives (use IDE). If using SATA anything greaer then 108Mhz will shorten the hdd's life span.

I would keep that between 100 to 110 for daily use.

Try to set everything manually

You haven't mentioned what CPU you are using.

Assuming you are using an E8400/E8500, your CPU may not be able to handle 4.68ghz at 1.45v Vcore. Try putting down the multi to 8.5 or even 8 and then tweak your voltages. Your MCH core is probably higher than it needs to be. I couldn't boot at 500fsb to save my life at 1.4v, but it runs all day at 1.3v. At 530fsb, I just needed 1.32v MCH core. Some other people posted this also, which is why I lowered mine and that solved the problem. Also, your Dram voltage looks kind of high. My OCZ Ram runs at 1066 at 2.1v just fine. Manually set your CPU PLL to 1.5v. I have my CPU termination set to auto, and the same voltage that auto sets is the minimum voltage needed to boot if I manually set it.

I got my E8400 C0 stable with FSB 550

Somewhere between 550 and 575 I probably have my max FSB, no more E8400 for a while, time to test my Q6600 GO

pretty happy with the ud3p, i bought it as a backup, I cant for the life of me get it stable at 500+ though, i know my other hardware is capable....

it will do 475 on stock volts, I am probably missing something in this bios somewhere...

it will run small FFT all day at 500 but as soon as I go blend CRASH, I cant figure it out. My ram is good close to 1200 and my cpu can do 550 easy...

this chip and ram did 500 on a rampage formula with 8, 8.5 and 9 multi's at 1.18 vtt, 1.55pll and 1.31 NB, cpu volts 1.2 for 4ghz, 1.28 for 4250 and 1.36 for 4500 all blend stable for 12 hours or more...

My 535x7.5 result..only can run 1MB PI.,fail with 32MB PI..i dunno why..

Cpu termination may be too low I think up to around 1.26 'll help you :)

ok.,i'll try later.,but if i increase the Vtt the cpu reference will auto increase on the same time.,is it ok or do i need to set it back to default (0.760)?

You just leave it, but you may need to adjust the references up or down a step or 2 after the VTT increase to find a new sweet spot

Yes, Set VTT1.20 and MCH ref to 0.68 as you set it before, then go raise up VTT to 1.26 you 'll notice MCH Ref will auto increase It doesn't matter. Go and check in ET6 you 'll see it still 0.68 in Windows because it just a Ratio of Vtt and MCH Ref only.

ok bro.,i understand now.,just try increase the Vtt to 1.26 and cpu ref to 0.688-0.712.,the problem now is i cannot successfully log into windows.,the system keep BSOD with IRQ less or equal..
