New to the thread, lots of info in here
Im just starting out with overclocking my system and have run into problems (like most folks here have) with what settings with equipment. I spent the last 2 days going through boards to try to see what settings to try and experiment with. First off, this is the gear:
Asus P5E3 Premium Wi-fi-AP w/ 0605 bios
Intel Q9450
CORSAIR 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1800 (PC3 14400)
areca ARC-1231ML-1G PCI Express SATA II Controller Card w 2x MTRON 7500 (Raid 0)
GeForce GTX 280 HC16 Clear
ZALMAN ZM - Reserator1 V2 Water Cooling System
I started out with this
CPU Ratio 7.5
FSB Strap Auto
FSB Freq 450
DRAM Freq 1800
Dram Cmd Rate 2N
Timing 7-7-7-20-2T
Static Read Disabled
Static Write Disabled
CPU Voltage 1.325
CPU GTL (0/2) Auto
CPU GTL (1/3) Auto
CPU PLL Auto
FSB Term Volt Auto
DRAM Volt 2.0
NB Volt Auto
NB GTL Volt Auto
SB Volt Auto
Clock Over Volt Auto
Load Line Normal
CPU Spread Spec Disabled
PCIE Spread Spec Disabled
CPU Clock Skew Auto
NB Clock Skew Auto
The system booted up and CPU-z showed a Clock 3375 Mhz
I then tried
CPU Ratio 8
FSB Strap 400
FSB Freq 450
DRAM Freq 1800
Dram Cmd Rate 2N
Timing 7-7-7-20-2T
Static Read Disabled
Static Write Disabled
CPU Voltage Auto
CPU GTL (0/2) Auto
CPU GTL (1/3) Auto
CPU PLL Auto
FSB Term Volt Auto
DRAM Volt 2.0
NB Volt Auto
NB GTL Volt Auto
SB Volt Auto
Clock Over Volt Auto
Load Line Normal
CPU Spread Spec Disabled
PCIE Spread Spec Disabled
CPU Clock Skew Auto
NB Clock Skew Auto
The problem is that when I boot up and start up CPU-z it shows a core speed of
2700.3Mhz, 6x multiplier, Bus speed 450.0Mhz.

As soon as I actually run a program (super PI), it changes to
3600.2Mhz, 8x multiplier, Bus speed 450.0Mhz

Any reason why the multiplier would go up/down dynamically based on load? I have speed stepping turned off in the bios.... So Im thinking I need more voltage on the NB, any ideas?
Also thanks for the posts/info from deachus and SoulsCollective. You guys have solid info on this thread.
