Donanimhaber.com talked with Luciano Alibrandi which is Director of PR at Nvidia. According to site, Alibrandi claims that Fermi based GPU (GF100) will be fastest GPU solution in the industry. There is still no spesific launch date of Fermi on the table but Alibrandi indicates CES 2010 to launch new generation technologies from Nvidia.
If the performance is really good and it is as revolutionary as they imply, I know this might not be called for, but I hope they change the naming of this series entirely.
E.g no more gtx 3xx because there is already cards like that on the market that share very little in common with these new directx 11 cards.
This new series really needs to start on fresh ground and would represent an image change for the company, to show they are done with renaming(I know, I know).
Anything that based on g92-g80 or g200 will stay in the gtx xxx nameset.
Heck maybe even abandon the geforce moniker.
IMO this is PR at its best. whenever guru or someoe gets a hold of one and show benches then I will make a comment.
They were the fastest last time too. The real question is will they be able to price competitively this time around.
Oh no, someone from NVIDIA (even worse, their director of PR) said GF100 will be teh fastest GPU, how surprising. I don't doubt GF100 will be faster than RV870, I just wonder why this is supposed to be news to any of us?

What else would the head of PR of nvidia say? If it was faster I would have expected a leak by now. In any case they are basing this on the 5800 series. By the time nvidia do release their card ati will have something else.

Agreed! they are too late for me (who bought 2 5970s already). I have to put my new system together before i can used both of them though. The only compliant I have about the drivers is powerplay does not work. That happened with the 4870x2 as well at launch. With a single 5970 I'm seeing frame rates at 2560x1600 I've never seen before, so I am one happy customer! Oh yeah opengl is working nicely! I haven't even overclocked the card either! :rofl:Quote:

Maybe I misunderstood you and a person should not by a fermi based on what NV has done. That not a matter of being smart, but a matter of principals and emotions which is not the same. Frankly, I would rather be pragmatic and buy what is the fastest and also the best value regardless of the brand. I think this is the smartest course of action.
Also if you just had crazy cash and just wanted to buy a piece of hardware, I would have purchased another monitor I were you. Either more 30" or 2 24 to flank your current monitor.

What happens if the 5870 is too slow for future directx 11 games? If there was games to really take advantage of directx 11 and the games that need speed beyond SLI gtx 285(aside from crysis), I could understand kadozer, but there isn't really any.
Building on my original argument, what if someone buying a fermi is better set for the longterm(instead of the short term benefit in your scenario(and the little benefit at that)), so instead of waiting a bit, the person who is bought a 5870, is stuck with a might be too slow for the future, or not offer the best visual possible on future titles.
I think a smarter thing for stefan to say ignoring emotion on stefan part is this. Smart people will buy fermi or wait for the 5890 or r8xx refresh. That way, people buy a product that is price in a market that has competition and by that time, more directx 11 titles will be out. In addition, someone doing the above is likely to enjoy much longer term benefits than short term benefits involving crysis(depending on the hardware they had before) and a couple of directx 11 titles.
The direct x11 speed of dirt 2 should be frightening to 5870 owners.
So your going to wait 6 months while the 5xxx series is out now? ATI has the fastest card and best value at the moment. Nvidia has not released a new high end product for a year already. I would rather play games than wait for Nvidia's Fermi. Cmon they had to go as far as making a mock up of a card that does not even exist. Ever since that moment I've had my doubts about nvidia's Fermi. Nvidia's drivers have also been suffering there's issues at my res( video playback issues) that did not exist 4 months ago, and also they've managed to remove support for a bunch of game. the fps with a single 5970 have been dipping into the 90s with 4xAA.
My 5770 plays dirt 2 maxed (hihest settings) at 16X10 flawlesly . Now I am playing with a monitor that supports 1440X9. Nvidia still knows what side its bread is buttered, if Fermi does not crush single gpu Cypress in gaming, across the board barring few test, it is a failure. [I have bought a HD5850 myself, because I couldn't bear at all my computer for a single more minute. So I've bought now, the best product that I could buy in my price range, at a level of performance and features (DX11). Would I have prefered some competence to be available in the form of Fermi? Of course. And even R900 architecture instead of Evergreen. But the thing is, neither one or the other is available so that is nothing more than fantasize... now I have my new computer installed -I'm typing from it- provisionally while I wait -:rofl:- for my first watercooling loop parts to arrive]

And, oh, stock HD5850 is faster in Crysis (and most other games) than GTX285, and has much more overclocking room (it can be nearly as fast as a HD5870 when both are overclocked, more than a stock HD5870 in every regard) at a lower price point (at least here, at Spain, I've bought my HD5850 for 225 with two games, GTX285 is ~300).
So, much more performance, for less price, and compliance with newer standards like DX11, what are you talking about?
Don't expect Fermi to be much better compared to Cypress than Cypress is compared to GT200... and of course, not for less money.

It's not just about waiting for Fermi. The current HD5xxx lineup just isn't an attractive upgrade for some people due to the relatively small performance jump in DX9/10 (~35%) for anyone with a GTX 285 or HD 4890. Nvidia is also benefiting from the dearth of DX11 content but that's gonna change soon. Demand is only going to increase after BF:BC2 and AVP drop and by that time there should be higher supply of Cypress chips too and that's when it's gonna make less sense to wait on Fermi. Nvidia can keep their dual-chip card though, give me 2x285 on a single chip and then we can talk.
Personally I have a 4670 & 4850 in two htpc rigs but without question I much prefer my gtx260 for gaming & drivers overall. Thats just my own personal experience and feelings from using products from both companies, not a brand loyalty.
So when it comes to my next video card purchase from my own personal experience I will wait to see how Fermi performs before even considering 5xxx series.

Also lets not forget about the HD 5750/70, there are plenty of them for sale since the launch date and more people will buy the lower priced product.

The top end of the HD 4*** cards was HD 4870 x2, they're all sold out. The NVDIA cards are sold out since they're EOL and the NVIDIA buyers have no other option, I'm sure NVIDIA didn't plan for such situation for the Christmas market time.Quote:

I expect Fermi to be 10-20% faster than dual SLI 285GTX in DX10 games and 50% faster with Fermi optimized DX11 games.
