Exposed Copper/Corrosion on EK 6970 Block..

Ive had this block for a little under a month.. I had to do a rebuild a couple of weeks ago and when I went to take a look at one of my GPU blocks I found this

    http://i.imgur.com/QmqZY.jpg

My loop is Distilled Water with a silver kill coil. I emailed Eddy from EK about this with these pics and his response was

    >>> EK Edvard König <e.koenig@ekwaterblocks.com> >>>

    Hi!

This looks like a dirt to me.

    Best regards, Eddy
Since this email Eddy has ignored the rest of my emails...

Does anyone know what would cause this to happen on such a new block? I have other Nickel/Acrylic things in my loop and I do not see any exposed copper on them..

I take terrible pics you're correct.. but you can easily see the copper if you zoom in on the pics.

Too much glare to see anything. Get it in some good light, don't use a cell phone flash...

But seeing copper doesn't equal corrosion.

I actually have some black marks in the nickel at the same place on my 6970 block. And the block is about 1.5 month old with just distilled water running through it.

It doesn't look like dirt to me, but those are some terrible pictures. Try taking some without flash, and we'll be able to get a better glimpse.

Looks like a ty plating job to me but would it be worth the hassle of getting a new block? Hell no. The nickle plating over the copper does absolutely nothing but protect the copper from tarnishing.

Well, when I posted about the terrible finish on my first block, Eddy promptly contacted me for a replacement. Since your problem is far worse than mine, you should have no trouble.

You need to take pics without flash... Otherwise it's really hard to tell...

that's cause your picture is absolute ..borrow a camera from someone, even if you have to 1 hour photo it.

I had a similar issue with my 285 blocks...

However, in my case it took two years.

NaeKuh, I can't believe I'm saying this, but most of your pictures look better .

Anyway, it doesn't look like dirt, but it's hard to tell from the pictures.

I have something like that going on on my blocks, but it was only near the gpu core, so I thought it was maybe because the water boiled in there. But maybe theres a defect? I wonder if I could get a replacement

Hey, EK is currently investigating these cases and trying to find logical explanation.
Once we find the answer we will present it to you immediately.

But I have to say that nickel is nickel. We have tested the thickness of nickel layer with the blocks that were shipped back to us and everything looks fine ~4micron layer.

I agree that my pics suck.. I took them with a cell in a dark room.

I already put the rig back together a week or two ago. I really dont want to tear down the rig to pull the block off unless Eddy is going to send me a replacement. I think the pics show the exposed copper even though they do indeed suck.

Nickel or not, it's coming off and the only thing in my loop is distilled water.

What did you use to clean your blocks? It is possible that whatever you used damaged the platting. I have seen similar results (my friend) on his CPU block just after he cleaned with vinegar and reinstalled. Also, the platting around the in-flow seemed to take on the damage first. I am wondering if the flow + pressure caused the platting to fail in that area.

Do you by chance have a killcoil or some other form of silver in that loop somewhere with the distilled water? If so, see this thread:

Reading few threads with the same issues.. All have one common, "distilled" water + this + that...

Why not using the on shelf watercooling liquid.. Fluid xp+ and many brand..etc. They got clear fluid also.. Many years without problems..

$10-$30 per bottle better that up ur $100+ blocks..
