Intel, AMD to phase out VGA by 2015

VGA should be dead already.... this is worst than wack-a-mole.

    read the whole thing here.

Death to VGA! No, not Spike's painfully lame Video Game Awards (although those could also use the axe) but the analog video connector that's been a staple of PCs for decades. Intel aims to accelerate the adoption of DisplayPort and HDMI video interfaces, and in the process, it's looking to cut the cord not only on VGA ports, but also the digital LVDS interface that connects most laptops to their displays. The chip giant's products will cease supporting LVDS in 2013, and VGA support will be phased out two years after that.

Can't say I'd miss DVI or VGA at all.

Finally! DVI was standardized years ago. Shouldve killed VGA at the same time

VGA, no... but what's wrong with DVI? c'mon, my monitor uses DVI, and I'm not getting rid of it any time soon. Good non-TN panel monitors aren't cheap, and I hate 16:9 as well...

dvi is a very large plug taking up space on the gpu slot that could be better used for airflow or extra plugs for multi monitor\digital sound outputs
if they have much smaller alternatives then why not?

Most high power cards are dual slot, plugs on one and vent on the other seems to work pretty well. Last I checked, there was some stink raised about display port introducing lag or something - I haven't kept up with it to know if that's true anymore or not.

Still, I'd be really frustrated if they cut out DVI and basically make it impossible for me to upgrade my graphics card without spending a few hundred more on a new monitor, which probably could only be 16:9 at that point Of course, my monitor is already 4.5 years old, I'm not sure of the lifespan of the backlights.

DisplayPort is just all around better and significantly smaller (Mini DisplayPort). I am sure Manufacturers will include HDMI to DVI adapters for a long time after the port is removed from the videocard anyways, so you shouldn't have to worry there.

He was concerned about HDMI/DVI being phased out, they are the same signal just a different plug ... displayport is a different tech, so not sure why you refer to it?

Displayport has slightly more latency I believe.

Personally I'd be royally peeved if they canned DVI/HDMI quickly after this... VGA can go, good riddance, but HDMI/DVI would be ridiculous. I love my Dell 3007wfp-hc .

I mentioned DisplayPort because the article is about the faster adoption of DisplayPort and HDMI by forcing the removal of VGA and DVI. And since HDMI is already common on all videocards.

Nothing of mine uses VGA anymore. In fact, none of my video cards even have VGA ports on them. They've all got at least 2 DVI and an HDMI port.

Seriously, I'm glad we're finally moving away from these gawd awful large data cords on our computers. They phased out serial and parallel ports years ago, so the only large plug we now have is DVI and VGA. Hell, even ribbon cables for IDE drives have been replaced by tiny SATA cables on the inside of our computer. Small serial ports are the norm at the moment.

In my book, DVI is fine because it's fully digital. However, Since HDMI is virtually the same thing as DVI, but smaller (and able to carry audio) I don't see DVI being around too much longer... And for those of you that want your IPS panels to last another 10 years, it'll be ok. DVI -> HDMI cables are pretty cheap, so as long as HDMI stays, your massive monitors with dual-link DVI connections will be just fine. DVI/HDMI isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Now that I don't have a CRT anymore, good riddance VGA. You won't be missed.

Good riddance to VGA. DVI will stay for a while, and I'm not too fond of HDMI with all their scaling issues, argh. I wish HDTV's would have a DVI port as well so I don't have to deal with HDMI.

DisplayPort is designed to replace digital (DVI) and analog component video (VGA) connectors in computer monitors and video cards, as well as replace internal digital LVDS links in computer monitor panels and TV panels.[1]
maybe let display port to take over all other connectors would be better.

Then your monitor either has something wrong w/ it or it isn't setup right. ∂

The responses to this article highlight the problem with the display port industry, there is just too much choice. Especially considering they all do pretty much the same thing, time to standardize methinks...
