Another great day!!! Doing my usual morning ritual, my little girl and I keeping each other entertained Made potato salad last night and got a nice steak for the grill. Unfortunately I have to cut grass. I hate doing it but I love the way it looks after.

While 12 am might technically be considered "morning", it really isn't

I'm up because my <2 month old Samsung 320 Gb HD322HJ hard drive looks like it's on it's way out. BIOS gives me error messages on POST about SMART saying the HDD is about to die, Windows takes ages to boot, Everest is also reporting that SMART says the HDD is about to die, and mHDD detected about 25-odd bad sectors on the drive, all in the Vista partition (I dual-boot Vista Business x64 and Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit). I've tried repairing them using mHDD, but that still hasn't stopped the SMART errors, or Vista being fairly sluggish at boot.

It's a real pain in the ass, 'cause since it's my OS HDD (data and games and crap are stored on a 2nd HDD), I'll need to buy something to replace it before I sent it off to warranty, since knowing Aussie retailers, that could take 1-2 months So it's either get another HD322HJ and risk having it die in <6 months, get the WD Cav ES16 320gb and have a 50/50 chance of either getting a 2x160 gb platters or a 1x320gb platter, or get a SeaGate 7200.11 320 Gb and possibly suffer from the over-all drop in Seagate quality since they acquired Maxtor.

One last thing I can try is swapping around SATA cables, since the SMART error messages only started up today when I unplugged the drive...

Edit: Nope, not the SATA cable. Looks like my main rig is down until after the weekend

I use seagate drives almost exclusively and all have been rock solid, even the recent purchases.

    Good morning!!
I can still say that because it is still morning for another 13 minutes I love paid holidays, get to sleep in really late but then I was up to all hours last night too

I've had good luck with most Samsung and seagate drives. I had one samsung go wacky on me, oh a little over a year ago. But I've had a seagate bomb out too before. Sometimes you just get a dud unfortunately.
Now don't get me started on WD though, almost every drive I've had from them has blown up in my face! Though I guess they may be better now, I haven't used one for a few years now.

I've had better luck with WD drives than I have maxtor, I had five seagate scsi drives in raid five that ran for 15 years, they just recently died. My drives in my quad are seagate 750 gb drives seem to be doing great.

Oh, maxtor, well.... let's say I haven't really had bad luck with them, but enough people do I don't trust them too much. I have an old 250GB sata1 maxtor in my PC that used to be my storage drive but it is like 4 years old now, at least, and I started to not trust it so much. I bought one of those new single platter 250GB seagates for my primary and made my old samsung 2560GB the storage. The old maxtor is now my random crap drive where I test different OS on and do temporary backups and such.

that sucks karl. i've always purchased WD and not had an issue. i did have an period of time when 2 different drives would get corrupt a lot but it seemed it was bc they were running too cool (25C). since i switched cases back in december the drives have been running a lil warmer and not had any issues. also, seems windows likes to cause a lot of problems. one of the drives was pretty chattery with XP, thought it was gona die but i threw ubuntu on it and it stopped making noise.

I've had problems with every major brand except Seagate, but then I only starting using them in the past year and bought Seagates exclusively.

My worst experience was about 4 or 5 years ago. I got 8 Hitachi desk stars over a short period - maybe 10 of them altogether. About half were 100gb and the other half 120 gb. All, except one or 2, died after a few years. But it wasn't the mechanism, it was integrated electronics. Fortunately, as each drive died, I had another identical one with the same micro code on the IDE board so I could transplant the board and recover the data before bricking the drive. I will never touch anything from Hitachi ever again.

I've also had failures with WD's and Maxtors - always after the warranty period.

I've heard complaints about Seagate here, but overall they seem to have the best reputation and will stick with them until I have some reason not to.

Karl, go for a WD6400AAKS. They are incredible value, fast, cheap, quiet and cool.
I'm running 4 of them in my dual harper 24/7 now and have used at least 20 for customer's PCs, so take it from me - they rock

I actually just picked up a WD6400AAKS for my storage drive a few days ago. I like using one small (160-320 Gb) drive for the OS (hence the HD322HJ), and a larger (500-1000 Gb) drive for data and games and crap. I haven't been able to do much more than a quick HD Tach speed test on it, but it seems pretty quick. I've heard a LOT of good things about them. I'd probably think about getting a WD3200AAKS if I could be assured of getting a 1x320gb platter.

Beautiful morning here. Fed the girl and now we're off to run a few errands and then she'll get to meet her step-sister and family for the first time. I'm pretty excited, they haven't visited in almost 2 years.
