It can be overridden by shorting some pins, there's a guide in xtreme mods section.

Test bench: empty
so the 2900 only needs the 6pin and the 8pin is redundant untill auto overclocking?
according to this you can use the 6+6 http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33891174

I'd like to buy two but the 6+8 pin thing has confused me.
i can use the 6pin only but to overclock i need 6+8pin? but the link i posted above said you can use 6+6pin?
You can find it for £150 incl. in UK. OCUK is overpriced as always.
OMG...
You CAN USE it with 6+6 perfectly, but ATI Overdrive is DISABLED.
If you use 6+8, Overdrive is ENABLED.
Overdrive--> Allows you to manual overclocking in CCC. There is no auto OC O_O
Friends shouldn't let friends use Windows 7 until Microsoft fixes Windows Explorer (link)

English review from tweaktown.com:

While we wanted to include overclocking benchmarks, due to time constraints we didn’t get the opportunity but this is something that we will dive into separately soon. Firing up AMD GPU clock we had no problems benching at 760MHz/1800MHz DDR which actually put us slightly ahead of the HD 2900 XT in 3DMark06. Hopefully this translates over to real world gaming – we’ll have to investigate this more later.
looks like the max will be 750/1800
Intel Core I7 920 @ 3.8GHZ 1.28V (Core Contact Freezer)

6GB OCZ Gold DDR3-1600MHZ 8-8-8-24
XFX HD5870
WD 1TB Black HD
Corsair 850TX
Cooler Master HAF 922
So who's going to be the first person to try and flash their Pro as an XT? If they are identical cards it might be possible
