Ok so i think i joined this crunching thing correctly, just want to ask if there is any downfall to running a laptop 24/7? I hopefully want my Q6600 and my 2.0 Dual Core running 100%.

Welcome. I believe some team members crunch with laptops. I'm sure they will chime in.

Glad to have you on this great team. I do not use my laptop for crunching but as sierra_bound stated others do and they will be better to answer that question.

Thanks everyone :-) watch out for Movieman, hehe :P
I wouldn't run a laptop 24/7 with the batteri on, just because the battery will die after a while. Just have the ac-adapter, connectet with out the batteri..

Thanks for the advice, i will run it for a week and just keep my eyes on the temps and see how it goes from there.

I've had a lappy running for quite some time with no ill effects. It sits on a small usb powered cooling base most of the time. Welcome to the team.

maybe it will!

The XS WCG team needs your support.
A good project with good goals.
Come join us,get that warm fuzzy feeling that you've done something good for mankind.
If you sent him down a section we'll be able to supply him with that, it does do allot more (for!) science, though atm you aren't happy if you fold on Nvidia gpu's with the automatic core update
If he uses vista, it will take 3% off your cpu crunching time, I think it's a worthy trade.
well i only just found out about this "Crunching, adn have only read the first page of this thread, but should i fold@home or crunch? what's the difference? which one should i dedicate my cpu to???
Crunch on the cpu and fold on the GPU

I'M IN.
I finally moved out from home so I just updated WCG and it's now running 24/7.

I just setup a P!!! file server. I wouldn't mind crunching on that. Would it be worth it to get a decent AGP GPU on it and do some crunching with that?
No GPU client for WCG right now. We will take any CPU power you can add to the team though.

Aww, you guys make me feel all warm inside. Thanks for the welcome, I'm proud to be part of you guys, your dedication is nothing short of amazing.
And yes I've read your rules, nobody is safe. I seem to recall Dave mentioning that he has a cheap overseas calling contract too
Once again, thanks, crunching as we speak (of course).

Ok, so it's late and I am really being lazy asking this question. If I crunch, does it use all of my CPU power, in other words, is it like running Prime constantly? Also, I saw a post about folding on the GPU, is this like folding for seti? And can I do both, crunch and fold at the same time? Is one for medical research and the other for scientific research? I know, I could probably just search, but again, being lazy and I am tired so please let me slide on this one.
Thanks,

Ok, so I couldn't go to bed without doing a quick search, this is what I know so far:
Crunching is for medical research and done on the CPU.
I can do both, crunch and fold at the same time.
So I just if someone could answer the other questions that would be great.
Thanks.

It's not like running Prime constantly. WCG doesn't stress the cpu that much .
Normally you'll see lower temps running WCG compared to prime.
Folding involves modeling how strings of amino acids are folded into the 3D shapes that allow them to bind to other proteins such as receptors. The binding process determines how a protein affects the operation of a biological system like a cell membrane or how it otherwise affects cellular metabolism.
This is technically scientific research but the information gathered has direct applications to developing treatments.
Crunching also involves modeling the behavior of molecules but in this case you are more interested in finding chemical compounds (which are usually much smaller molecules than proteins) that will bind to specific biological targets like cell receptors and other types of proteins. You're still interested in the 3D shape of the proteins but you don't care how they came to be that way, just finding things that bind to them.
