ASUS M4N82/955 problems....plz NO AMD chipset suggestions

...but due to lack of foresight I did NOT mention the motherboard model in topic title. Please ONLY offer suggestions if you own an ASUS board with a 750a, 780a or 980a chipset...with an AMD 955 processor and an AMI BIOS. Any other suggestions are fruitless. The normal OCing procedures and component isolation tests do NOT work on this motherboard, with this CPU and this BIOS....I am NOT new to overclocking and although I have a low post count...that does NOT mean I am an idiot. I have much higher post counts on other equally respected forums.

I have that MB and I have tested the 955 in it also. I Don’t know about yours but my MB exhibits some strange behavior such as treating my bios settings more like suggestions rather than hard settings. Especially FSB and voltage settings. Once you find a bios setting the MB will accept and you can live with, the MBs not really that bad at least during my testing. I’ve run 3dbenches with it at 4.1GHz+ in tri-sli with water cooled CPU. I don’t have it installed (setup) at the moment and the notes from those tests, not sure where they are. Anyway if you don’t get it figured out soon I can set mine up under air or water cooling (maybe tomorrow) and try to duplicate your problem using your settings? Let me know.

Well I know its a pain...but I'm truly stuck....I'm down to bad mobo or CPU and I'd really like it to not be either :)

But don't kill yourself...whenever you get the time to setup or find the notes...I'd really appreciate it....if I have to RMA the board or CPU I'd like to do before warranty runs out...which will be a while yet :)

And what is your problem exactly? Some chips/boards will just hit a wall at certain settings. Try more voltage (on nb or nforce thing) or start overclocking via FSB instead of multi. I think the problem lies within the fact you have an Asus board though :rofl:

While I didn't meet the 955 requirements.. my M4n72-E (750a) would allow me to only run up to about 3.7ghz on my 940. Put the same cpu in a M3A79T-Dlx and I could boot at 4ghz something the M4N would never do. MSI has a 980a mobo due out any day now. Unfortunately too little too late.. as I got a steal on 2 * 2.9ghz Shanghai Opterons and wont go back to AM3 for the foreseeable future.

.and the nforce "thing" is only for hybrid SLI which I have disabled in BIOS :)

check the Bjorn3D link below...20x multi and +1 notch on NB voltage, and...bam...4.0ghz, as for the voltage.....OC experts like CHEW have posted repeatedly that these CPU's do NOT like high voltage...for example, I successfully booted into 3.8ghz ran Prime95/blend 3+ hours and validated it @ Overclock.net...however...it won't restart at 3.8Ghz...even if I just boot into 3.8 and restart....just read the post i linked to in the top of this thread..it'll save a lot of questions :)

and please, I appreciate the suggestions, but if you don't have the M4N82 and the 955...they are NOT going to help....I've got 40-50 posts about this exact topic on overclock.net already...this is a very new mobo with a very finicky 980a chip(set)...add to that that ASUS is NO help because board is still under warranty and AMI BIOS's suxxors. As I mentioned in the original post (linked above) this is NOT my first OC...but this is the first time that I've had problems that I shouldn't be having.

What "theoldtimer" said above is EXACTLY what this BIOS on this board with this CPU acts like.....it treats settings more as suggestions than as actual settings lol

One very simple example is the DRAM Timing section of this BIOS.....there IS NO MANUAL option....you can choose auto or both....as you can easily see....this makes stable OCing a very tricky/lucky business on this motherboard. I've had it just arbitrarily change my RAM timings...because IT wanted to :)

Calm down. Nvidias 7x0 and 9x0 chipset is the same except the later got a new name, and the difference between 940 and 955 is basically null. All CPUs are difference you might've maxed out at 3,7GHz stable.

My 720BE also maxed at 3,7GHz and we got the same CPU basically afterall.... ;)

Actually, the difference between the 720's the 940's and the 955's are very much different. Also the combination of the CPU/motherboard, is just as important, if not more so than the CPU itself...That is precisely why I asked for help from those with NVIDIA chipsets and 955's. Please do not spam this post with conjecture. This motherboard is only about 4 months old and instead of an AWARD BIOS, ASUS switched to AMI BIOS...and I have the latest version as well, which is about 2 weeks old.

If you had actually gone to the link at top of this thread and read it...you would see that I am NOT concerned with the CPU speed. I am concerned with the fact that even on a CPU validated 3+ hour Prime95/blend 3.8Ghz run...the computer is stable but will not restart. THAT is the issue...and it points to either software or memory corruption, NOT damage...but corruption.

Also, the fact that it easily boots into 3.9 in safe mode should tell you that the CPU and/or the motherboard are NOT the limiting factors.

Lastly, as I stated in the first post in this thread....I'd like to hear from those with the 750, 780 or 980 nVidia chipsets, running the 955....I don't CARE what a 940 or a 720 does with an AMD chipset, as i do not have those. Why this is so difficult for some to understand is beyond me.

The fact that a 2.8Ghz 720 or a 3.0Ghz 940 can get maxed out at 3.7Ghz is a lot more understandable than the fact that a 3.2Ghz 955 can! Even a less than perfect 955 should easily get 3.8-3.9Ghz which is only a 600-700Mhz over clock. The problem is much more likely to be immature BIOS or immature chipset drivers.

Doesn't matter, I've still seen quite a few 955 max out on 3,7GHz. The whole Phenom II range = same piece of silicon anyways.

Prime stability can still be unstable, try a variety of programs

you just refuse to READ don't you lol.....I got no problem running Prime....it just don't reboot into 3.8ghz even when i dont stress it...its a software issue bro....I even did a fresh install of windows....nothing but drivers and directX....not even MS updates, services stripped to the bone etc...same problem...it boots into 3.8 ONCE

Look..last time...it boots at 3.9+ into safe mode...no problems...so its not the CPU or the motherboard...a clean OS install doesn't help either....now...what are we left with....CPU/mobo/RAM instability...but ONLY when I restart....

Ergo...the only thing left...no matter how unbelievable is BIOS settings...problem is...it's a relatively NEW BIOS, even though it's the latest version....so....ONLY someone with EXACT same hardware and BIOS...can help...I realize there are not many of those...read "theoldtimer"s post up top.....and then please stop spamming this post...thx :)

I didn’t forget about you ghot. I setup the Asus M4N82 system and ran some tests today and I’ll try and post some bios shots along with the test results @3.9GHz sometime this evening. Although I can’t reproduce the error you receive at Windows XP boot, I can produce a file not found followed by a failed OS boot.

I do read but sometimes Prime95 can lie. Many people run Prime95 stable yet they face some sort of issues like instability or the one you are mentioning.

Try out OCCT and LinX aswell. Personally I combine Prime95/LinX and memtest86+ to determine what's stable. To me your software issues sounds like instability so try OCCT or LinX aswell, also memtest86+. Even if you haven't clocked your memory the RAM or NB could get instable cause your CPU is increased.

Just trying to help so please try not to be rude turn down that attitude if you want any help on XS really, also learn the fact that different chips are very different from eachothers.

Bro...I'm really trying be to be nice here....I got OCCT and LinX and Orthos beta SP4...BUT IF THE COMP DON'T REBOOT...IT DON'T REBOOT....which part don't you get....I KNOW ITS UNSTABLE...even at 3.7 occasionally I get oddities...now go raise your post count somewhere else...and don't get hurt feelings....go buy an M4N82 and a 955...then we'll talk :/

I got a whole folder full of stress test programs including memtest....which I pass with flying colors on overnight runs on one stick each and both together of three sets of quality RAM.

I was putting computers together waaaaay back in the late 70's and early 80's...there is something in the BIOS that is messing me up...most probably in the not normal RAM settings. ASUS is only on the 6th BIOS for this board...and they don't even know what all the weird memory settings do.

Like I just said 2-3 times already, I understand you are trying to help.....but you just can't solve apple problems with oranges :)

I've noticed your vCore is only 1.40v. Try upping it to 1.45v-1.48v and come back. I don't give a :banana::banana::banana::banana: if other people have different chipsets than you, they are just trying to help, and so am I.

Ok ghot, I have the MB installed in my testing fixture (not in a case, it’s just easier in the fixture) using air cooling (Tuniq tower) along with three extra 120MM fans for the chipset, ram and GFX card. I flashed to the 802 bios before testing. I’m using Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 RC 32-bit in dual boot but this is not a fresh install of XP.

I tested @3914MHz 19X206 with 2400MHz NB, 3914MHz 19X206 with 2600MHz NB and 3900MHz 19.5X200 with 2400MHz @1.5125 set in the bios. I tested other bios settings as well as CPU voltage settings 1.45 to 1.55V but prime always stopped with in a few minutes when running @3900MHz (max cpu temp was 53C as read using Core Temp) although other bench tests ran fine. When testing at 3800MHz prime ran until I stopped it (40+ minutes). I have tested using this 955be for quite a while now and I’ve beat on it in at least three different motherboards, mostly using water cooling so it’s not as fresh as it once was. Lower voltage settings may work as well in your system but these work in this one.

My system was more stable using 19X206 3914MHz running the 2400MHz northbridge speed but would run the tests that I normally run @2600MHz NB.

This one would not boot into XP @3900MHz at 1.45V, 1.48V but it did at 1.5Vwith the CPU/NB set @AUTO for speed and voltage. It needed 1.2V for the CPU/NB @2400MHz to boot into XP @3900MHz. When I set the NB to 2600MHz at 1.2V the boot failed with a file not found message on the black screen. I increased the CPU/NB voltage in steps until XP booted at 1.2875V. After running some tests in XP I bumped the CPU voltage to 1.5125V which made it possible to complete 3DMARK06, Wprime 32M and SupePI 1M but it won’t prime for any length of time. I didn’t install any games to try so I don’t have a clue about that aspect of the over clock.

had vcore up to 1.55v son...."theoldtimer" has obviously done extensive testing on this board....and his input is appreciated...

and bro it wouldn't matter which forum I post on.....the chipset is attached to the board. The problem is ....it's a new mobo and chipset and advice from those without the same combo ....while it

...shows initiative....still doesn't help.

I live on a fixed income bro, I can't afford to set up test rigs like "theoldtimer" obviously can. Heck, I can't even afford a digital camera to take SS's of my BIOS :)

I don't think ANYONE here is an idiot...I DO think that some people post before they actually READ what the problem is....we're all in this together...the brave, the daring, the willing to risk smoke....but while a chevy mechanic may be able to assemble a ford...a ford mechanic will be able to tune it better :) And tuning is what we're doing here, my friend :)

In two...(only 2) posts..."theoldtimer" did 2 things he completely read the problems and then did his best to SIMULATE the exact same environment..aka...CPU/mobo....and THEN offered advice.

From his COMPLETE testing on same gear...he has shown me where i was in error...with my finicky BIOS...now THAT's worth a lot more than 15 people with different gear...GUESSING.

Like I've said 3-5 times now...I appreciate the interest shown...but I think it would be better spent helping those with AMD/ATI chipsets....don't you :)
