My DFI has flatlined my redline....

Oh man am I p**sed off, this is the second time this has happened with two different lots of ram (Mushkin and OCZ).

My DFI mobo has very kindly killed my brand new Mushkin Redline :slapass:

This has happened before with some OCZ VX PC4000 I had, except on that occasion it killed both sticks, this time its feeling generous and has let me off with just the one. :rolleyes: (So far anyway, I'm just waiting on the other one dying.)

I HAVE STAYED WITHIN VOLTAGE SPEC, and have 6 fans cooling the dimms.

The first time it happened I just put it down to bad luck, but twice? :nono:

In between the VX and the Mushkin, I have been using TCCD with no real problems, other than it doesn't like anything over 2.7v (higher gives memtest errors). I put this down to the memory but it seems strange.

I have done nothing wrong and again I now have to RMA my ram (most likely at my cost...AGAIN...and most likely gonna take weeks AGAIN).

To be honest I'm thinking of changing my mobo, I've had enough

I hear ya buddy. I have no issues with my ram thank God however other issues are annoying me. The ATI boards should be out this summer and I have a feeling lots are going to jump onto those. I will not be getting a DFI variant however as the problems we are having do not seem to be from the NF4 chipset itself but the actual board which is made by DFI.

Cantankerous, those ATI board's can't come quick enough, I feel like I'm running on borrow time here. I'm considering taking out the remaining Redline module (while its still alive) and using TCCD at low volts until these mobo's come along. :(

simple solution. don't use the 5v rail, pump up the 3.3v rail to compensate :)
(though i think you need a modded bios for that)

Ouch, so this problem is only with the 5v rail right?

Running my CH-5 at 3v isnt really in danger right?

:D Can't confirm - running 3,72Vdimm from 5-V rail for more than 3 month without any problem...........

I quit running my UTT until its proven or not that the MB is killing RAM. However, it is likely voltage killing RAM not the MB, how many sticks of TCCD are dying? Much fewer I'd say.

Eldonko: one thing to remember is that tccd normally doesn't run with the 5v jumper switched. if the common theory about the jumper being the one that's killing ram, tccd wouldn't be effected :toast:

On 5v jumper ? strange noticed a few more folks past few days report ram being killed on DFI but only since the issue was reported ???

This is very worrying. The DFI board is the only board that can poush UTT and it now seems its the only one killing it. What are we all meant to do now?

I rma'd my redline 4000 because it had 1 error on test #7 at stock speeds but it ran fine, but an error is an error so I rma'd it and now the new rma modules sent dont even boot up. They are dead :( The computer just beep beep beep beeps and I tried it in my MSI mobo and all it does is beep beep beep beep beeps... All my other ram runs fine. I decided to change back over to my OCZ TCCD and wait for the new ATI mobos, but before i did I tried the bad stick one more time and the system booted. It then proceeded to pass memtest+, boot windows and pass memtest for windows with no error. At this point I am thinking that I am going crazy, as I know the memory was dead last night.

Anyway, I switched off the PC and tried to boot again....this time like last night no go, and again its just that one stick that has the problem. Take it out and the system boots, put it back in and it doesn't (even just on its own, I cleared cmos again, etc).

So the memory is defo buggered, but why would it just come back to life like that for no reason, work perfectly for a bit and then keel over and die again for seeming no reason?

Is this that electro-migration that Oscar was talking about?

sounds like the cold boot issue ?? tried a different psu as i recall enermax psu + DFI don't go well together ?

what the problem between enermax and dfi boards?

Back in my day we didn't have these fancy 4vdimm boards. We had to overclock with sticks and twigs and vmods.

Has there been any ram killed from high voltage on other MB's?? Seems strange how DFI would try to ignore this issue or blame fault on the user if its totally only happening to there board.

You wont beable to use the 4vdimm jumper with that P/S.. I know cause i've had 2 of them now and i've givin up on the thing and returned it!

Low voltages all around and it was'nt enough juice for my 4 DD 12v water pumps pumps. It would'nt turn on. Tech support made me a addapter so i could run some extra 12v crap off the 8 pin connector and it was crazy unstable. I ended up having to run 2 power supplies just to run my cooling. Not what i wanted to do with a 500 dollar P/S. You would think an 950WATT max powe supply would do it but since its like 4 small 200 watt 12v rails at 17amps, its not enough to power my beast.

Infact i even noticed my graphics having that overheating look with messed up pixles an all and i thought it was the cards overheating.. But i guess it was just that they werent getting enough juice is all.. I know this now after going back to my 700 watt zippy with an extra Power supply for the pumps.. Its even hotter in the room and there fine now.

What you need is a Zippy with a LARGE 12v rail..

No. Just don't play with the stick anymore and RMA it. This is pattern it will eventually totally kill the memory. When it goes, it will take ALL the memory you had installed in at same time most likely. (4 Mushikin blue I had)

No, I used 5v rail only for benchs, dayuse at 2.9v 2.5-2-2-5 260mhz :(

What BIOS are you guys running? I'm going to assume you are all using a BIOS version older than the 414's.

it would seem that DFI only kills UTT sticks. i have never heard it kill old BH5...

There has been people with dead "old" BH-5 and even TCCD, the notion that it kills only UTT is not correct.

my first pair of Redline also ended up dead in orange slot2 at 5v rail with only 3.5v vdimm, rma took about 1 1/2 week....not too bad, talk to Tom and he'll take care of you.

Agent....how did yours ended up dead?


Edit: by the way, last month I'd also had a pair of TCCD got killed in orange slots, ran them 24/7 for about a month with two fans blowing on them at 330 @2.5-4-3-7 1T with 3.1v.

i've had my DFI NF4 SLI-D for 6 months using 5v jumper mainly with original BH-5/6 and UTT BH-5/CH-5 ram from OCZ PC3200 Gold/GoldVX and no ram has ever died, but being scared by this report switched back to 3.3v jumper and TCCD Gskill ram for now.

what is strange to me is that all these reports of dead ram coincide with the release of this confirmed DFI news of 5v jumper issues ? even some of the reported ram being killed only happened after this news was released ?

i'd like to know how many of these users were using pre-414 series bios that had that know killer issue reported at http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=440 and http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=59414 and not related to just using 5v jumper as such

2.9v with a 50cfm fan on the ram.

not sure how closely you guys monitor your chipset fan but when i use 510-x bioses my chipset fan can stop completely for moments at times driving up chipset temps... i since went back to 414-3 as best bios for me...

wonder if using 510-x causing chipset fan to stop and heat killing chipset on board and ram ???????

underload the TCCD was only slightly warm at 3.1v and I had two 90mm fans on top of them, they were the best sticks I ever had as well....bought 3 more pairs afterward and none could match the performance, been kicking myself in the arse ever since and I doubt I would ever come across nice TCCD like that anymore :D

As for chipset fan, always have mine on full speed.

Yeah, 5v rail
Dimm slot: Orange slots (interesting you should say that, cause my VX died in the orange slots and someone else mentioned it too)
Bios: 510-2
Vdimm: 3.5v

I have also 2 killed redline sticks.

I had my first set. Within 3 day's one of them was dead. Then came the second set and now again 1 dead stick.

When dit you guy's found out one stick was dead ? When running the systems or after switching from 3.3v > +5v ? My first set was killed after a switch to +5v 2e i don't know anymore :(

This is realy a big problem. By my Twinmos sticks are still alive :confused: i ran those in orange slots and old bios. I swiched many times between 3.3 an +5v but i had no problems. Now with reds 510-2 bios and yellow slots i have already 2 dead stick :confused:

I still dont think its a board issue, I have a strong feeling ppl are flashing with High volts still going through ram. I also think that ppl are pumping for example 3.6,3.7 volts through there Redlines when they are only rated to 3.5 then complain there sticks are dead.
I still say and remain conviced that this is a UTT issue, yes there is one of two instances of TCCD/BH5(old) dieing but giving the VERY SMALL number I would say this is more coincidence.
Giving the Memory controller is on die, I would of thought that if the board was spiking bad enough to KILL Ram, I would have a guess that the memory controllers would be dieing also.

I don't know that to think.

I whas using max 3.4 with 80 mm active cooling. Not flashing the board. And i have got 2 DFI Ultra D's here one stock bios one 510-2. And 2 venice cores both did not work. one module works fine other not. And at start both modules worked. So somthing is killing it but i don't know what.

I think Mushkin should start suggesting user to stay the hell away from the 5v rail for now because it looks like almost all dead Redline were on that same damn rail, I can not imagine how many RMA replacement they've been dealing with....

Astennu...I feel for ya, hope your 3rd pairs won't be on 5v rail again LOL just do the jumper mod for now man, otherwise they'll just keep dying.

Thank God this board hasn't killed any of my RAM but it sure is starting to annoy me :mad: Sometimes when I try to boot up right before it gets to the Windows loading screen it says Boot CD: DISC ERROR INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER Originally when I had this problem switching from SATA port 2 to 4 solved it (SATA 1+2 don't work at all for me). But then after a little while the problem came back again. For a while, I could solve it by switching from SATA port 4 to 3, and when it happened again from 3 to 4, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. Now I have to reset the CMOS 2 or 3 times until for some reason the board decides to start working again...until it starts all over again :(

a lot of people probably thought it was initially bad memory. When someone finally reported having the same issues, people started putting 1 and 1 together and figured it might be the boards fault especially when they had more than one set go on them. Just a thought, i could be wrong though.

Same here. I thought is was the memory but after 2 times i clould not be the memory.

This is a big problem. I don't know what 2 do.

Get for the 3e time redline modules or get VX 4000.

And I won't run 3.3 anymore. I just gonna stick with the 3.2.

And may be later i'll mod my coolermaster realpower for higher 3.3 volts. But i don't love the idea off voiding the warranty of my 3 monds old PSU.

A friend of mine has just killed 2x512MB of redline PC4000. Them first were doing thousand of errors at 250 2-2-2 3'2V (the first week they ran ok at that speed/voltage), but no now it is doing errors with no stop.. and sometimes it doesn't boot, so...

What are the rest of his timings?

I thought I had a dead stick of TwinMOS UTT and hadn't messed with it for a couple of weeks. This weekend I was messing around and wanted to see if it could run at all. Turns out it runs fine at stock settings, and runs 2-2-2-6 perfectly fine at 3.2v. The problems come up when running very tight on the "secondary" timings. Even running low speeds and loose alpha timings with tight secondary would give errors. I think Tref is the main issue for me as some of the settings on Auto are faster than what I set them to.
It runs 240MHz 2-2-2-6-1t perfectly fine. It may run higher MHz still but don't want to push my luck too much. Running 2t now because I'm using 4x512. :woot: Sure my benchmarks aren't quite as high but that extra GB cuts a lot of time off of load times. I guess I'm just not extreme anymore.....
One thing that is really strange is that I can't boot at all with 2 sticks in yellow without the 5v jumper set. Once I put the 5v jumper on it boots fine every time. I haven't tested with the orange yet.

Ran 3.6 for over a mounth no problems...have you been changing you bios when you switched ram? and also corectly changed the jumper?

While the system was running :( And he was using the 510-2 bios (jumper set to 5V for 7 days).
The rest of the timings are the "usually" ones I guess, 2-2-2-7, trfc 13, and the rest at 2 or 1.

I afraid not....at least my TMSP pc3500 went dead w 0510-2 :nono:
dead w 3.0v only....

dfi used to have bios problems on the earlier socket a boards. Now the nf4 boards are killing ram. I have a 754 socket nf3 and I had to flash a couple different bios's to get rid of cold boot problem. yeah they overclock like hell but I personally wont be upgrading to a nf4 board by them :mad:

I started having cold boot problems with 310 bios. So I don't think it is a specific bios causing it. ('course I could be wrong). I switched to utttest.bin for bigtoe's testing... Now my system cannot boot with the single stick.

Running single stick at the moment.

You're right OzSnoal... all current BIOS have the cold boot problem ;)

Cold boot prob? Is that cause of a certain ram? Cause i've never had a boot prob ever.

How to resolve the coldboot= Flash your bios,shutdown system,clear Cmos,turn around 4 times in your chair,blow on your ram 2 times,take your ram out for two days,put it back in,snap your fingers while singing,and push power(but make sure your still singing)and BAM,you should have power!!! If not shutdown system for 72 hours and try again. :D I purchased the DFI NF3 a week ago,and have had nothing but problems as well :( This is the pickiest board I have ever used. It seems if you do anything that the board doesnt like,it will start doing strange things. It really takes the fun out of Overclocking,when you can't even get your system stable at stock settings :mad:

Yeah sure eva, according to this http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...5&postcount=90 you have only had the DFI NF4 for less than 4 months... Thats a 50% error... hope you don't overstate your overclocks by the same margin. :nono:

@eva, your ram probly have 2-3-2 spd, thus it can post with 2.6V when bios initialize.

It looks like i'm going back to my old 414-2 bios. I had my twinmos running on that one. And they are still running. My reds where on 510-2 and killed within a week :stick:. Next time i'm buying a abit again. With a booster or i'll do a direct 3.3v mod.

But no more DFI for me. Same with the infinity. did 250 fsb no prob but had tons off problems. I realy love the NF7-S mainboards best S-A mainboard ever.

Reading this makes me wonder if the Abit AN8-SLI is the way to go. I keep having memory trouble with my NF4 SLI-D. Seems like whenever I change ram, it wont boot for a good 12 hours. Possibly a grounding problem though. Anyway, anyone going to get the AN8 instead? I can live with 3.55v on the ram :)

3.55 V @ ram ? Tis not stock is it ?

The latest Abit Board have max 2.9 so u need to do a direct 3.3v mod. Abit board are great. Its that it did not had a 3.2 v option for the memory but if it had i would have bought a Nforce 4 solution from Abit.

Hey guys, a while back I started this thread after my second lot of ram died on me (first lot was OCZ VX). Due to two different manufactures of ram, the rumours floating around, and the fact that I had stuck to the warranty voltage and provided plenty of cooling I blamed the DFI for the death of my memory.

3 or 4 weeks ago I received of replacement Redline modules from Mushkin, determined that this time the memory would not be killed by dodgy volt control I brought a OCZ DDR Booster and an OCZ PowerStream to replace my old Enermax PSU.

With these installed I set about installing the Redline, which I had set at the following:
260mhz / 1.5-2-2-6 / 3.46v (using booster). The ram handled this no problem, with no instability and no errors in any memtest I ran.

All was fine, and I was sure that I was safe this time round, until yesterday it happened again. Exactly the same thing, one stick dead, one stick ok…system wouldn’t post.

I would like to say now that given what’s happened, I no longer believe the mobo was at fault for the death of any of my ram. I now agree 100% with Pershoot’s earlier post that CH-5/UTT cannot handle high volts for periods of time, I have no experience of BH-5 yet so I can’t comment on that.

If you have to get / use CH-5/UTT I would keep it under 3.3v no matter what the cooling, and buy from OCZ or Mushkin both of which have given me excellent support when I needed it.

The point here today anyway is to set the record straight on what I say earlier in the initial post, hopefully I’ve done that.

Not always, depends how Cr@p your board is, mine sometimes needs 24hours of no power to boot 2 sticks @ 2.5.3.3.6 :slap:

jiff, i know exactly what your getting at, the board does suck...my opinion on that has not changed, its too tempremental. There have been times when this mobo has made me turn green and rip my shirt off shouting rarrr pete smash, pete crush, pete destroy. :D lol

your not the only person it happened to so it could possibly be the mobo. But if it happens on other mobos like an8 then your conclusion is correct

My DFI mobo has very kindly killed my brand new Mushkin Redline :slapass:

This has happened before with some OCZ VX PC4000 I had, except on that occasion it killed both sticks, this time its feeling generous and has let me off with just the one. :rolleyes: (So far anyway, I'm just waiting on the other one dying.)

I HAVE STAYED WITHIN VOLTAGE SPEC, and have 6 fans cooling the dimms.

The first time it happened I just put it down to bad luck, but twice? :nono:

In between the VX and the Mushkin, I have been using TCCD with no real problems, other than it doesn't like anything over 2.7v (higher gives memtest errors). I put this down to the memory but it seems strange.

I have done nothing wrong and again I now have to RMA my ram (most likely at my cost...AGAIN...and most likely gonna take weeks AGAIN).

To be honest I'm thinking of changing my mobo, I've had enough

That will teach you not to buy from DFI. All DFI is a little gimmic with there bright little colors and fancy things like that to catch a persons eye. I always go with ASUS.

Nop, I had a stick of OCZ EL GOLD 4000VX die on me last night. Had been running ok for a month @ 250FSB 3.3V 2.2.5.2. Last night it would not even be memtest 2 stable at stock settings... :(

ive learned that after my first dfi purchase

i only buy asus and abit mobos

It's not DFI, it's just this board with the 3.3/5v jumper thing. Look at their old boards when they just fed RAM off the 5v line....

This happened to me also, but when I tried to run at 1.5-2-2-8@250 it worked fine with no memtest errors.This is with the new7.20 bios and in the yellow slots.Died with stock bios not sure which it was, and in the yellow slots.

Hitting 260 @1.5-2-2-8 with 3.6volts and no problems yet

just so you know...i get a similar cold boot problem on my mobo and utt (my mobo is a S754 DFI UT nf3 250GB)

GSKILL GH is the best ram out there

No cold boot issue whatso ever

Dumo has the same ram and he was right also about the Cold boot issue.

wow some respect would be nice for a guy like eva, that only helps out the community.... :slapass:

personally i think that some of those killed ram were not dead, this board like any other board has its things, i have seen the "it killed my ram" with my old bh5 once, i would remove one stick and it would boot, add the second one again and it wouldnt, booted with one went into the bios used the reloaded thing, turned off, added the other stick and good to go.... overall for me its been a delight, 3.4v of the 5v rail 24/7 for as long as the board was realeased on taiwan, its not a perfect board but its as good as they come.
i personally dont think that this boards kills rams, vis to vis against what dfi has probably sold, and more a product of statistics, and well the way forums are nobody opens up a tread to say "i have been runing it 24/7 etc without problems...."

i wonder if these new memories can really take that much voltage 24/7?maybe its not the board, but since its the only board that can do it stock and its so popular we see so many user with problems? some food for though....no?
