Ivy Bridge 22nm works with H67 and P67 (1155 pin compatible, needs new BIOS)

The big news that P67 and H67 boards will support Ivy Bridge 22nm processors after BIOS and firmware updates is not as cool as it would have been if Intel didn’t mess these chipsets up.

Still there is a hope, as of April all boards powered with H67 and P67 will be bug free and with a BIOS update, they will be able to support Ivy Bridge 22nm processors. So once you get a functional bug free P67 or H67, you can expect to be able to plug Ivy into it and after new BIOS flash, they should just work.

This is what Intel told its various partners and this is the plan for now, but this bug can change a lot of minds and can affect just about any decision.

Intel also told to its special few that Ivy Bridge on Sugar Bay (6 series ) based platforms will require firmware and BIOS update and it also tells them that Q65, Q67 and B65 cheaper chipsets, won't support Ivy Bridge.

As we said, irony. Intel finally makes a good move and decides to keep the same socket and motherboards compatible with the future 22nm processors, only to have the platform affected by its biggest chipset recall in years.

The CPU supports Turbo Boost technology 2.0, the same one that you might see with Sandy Bridge, as well as the next generation Quick Sync video technology thanks to its new DirectX 11 graphics.

Lets not forget the enhanced AVX acceleration.

German, but artcikle says its rumored that Ivybridge is 20% faster then SB. (though it doesn't say where or how.. :D)

So the 20% could be realistic if they compare the topend mainstream SB vs the future topend mainstream IB.

Good to see once I do eventually get a P67 board that it'll last for awhile.

Interesting, i read somewhere before that while its gonna use the same socket 1155 ,there will be new chipset and it wont work with current ones.
If thats not the case, thats a significant plus for me, because AM3+ bulldozer for now seems to be short lived.

10 core 22nm cpu for 1366 socket stat ! :p

Probably more, I am sure it'll have at least 20% higher clock speed thanks to 22nm. :)

Hmmm..... I think you missed my point. As a bencher I didn't want to have another P55 situation happening. With Ivy being compatible ....the money for boards, mem & cpu's is a little easier to take. I'm really waiting for X68 .....but with the 990X's just around the corner...will give that a bash first...and then perhaps dabble in P67. Lightpeak can wait.

no it looks legit, i believe some boards, i saw said they support the ivy. but i might have misread.

Eitherway its still a sandy bridge die shrink, idk how powerful it will be.

No PCI-E 3.0 for the lines off the chipset. The lines off the CPU itself (x16 probably) will be 3.0 .

People keep forgetting that the northbridge and the memory controller are inside the CPU since Lynnfield... that's why we hear "P55 supports DDR3 only". Incorrect, the PCH doesn't support any memory, the CPU does.

I just hope Asus drops a "Gene" series board for 1155.

at that point, i'll upgrade. 22nm on a sexy red/black mATX board? sign me up.

It's not supposed to compete with high-end SB which comes out in Q4 2011, so I suppose these'll have 4 or at best 6, at least at the start.

So let me get this straight. 22nm Ivy Bridge, a more powerful CPU than Sandy Bridge on P67 and yet no 16x16 SLI/Crossfire unless Lucid chip is on the board? Whaaaat?

In a tiny socket 1155 package? doubtful; they probably could jam 6 cores in 1155 but I would expect lower cost quads.

yes thats true, They were suppose to implement Quad channel.. If these new 22nm chips are 6core or even higher i dont see how good "HIGH-end" can really be..

Also will 2012 motherboards be able to auto switch between intergrated gfx and gfx cards? Im guessing p77 motherboards will have to be a significant upgrade from p67, to counteract loss of motherboard sales, due to p67 compatibility.

I will change my mobo even it can drop Ivy in......

No, because based on that, Ivy Bridge High end would come out before Sand Bridge high end..which is scheduled for q4 2011...

Ivy Bridge will launch after all the Sandy B's sku's (socket 2011 etc) have launched, not before so.

Im betting Q4 2011 ivybridge wont be highend , Doesnt make sense why INTEL would release IVY highend when we're still waiting for high END Sandybridge.. But then again it happened with i5/i7..

I dont know man...I think, maybe it will be IB. Some ES SB (around 2.2 GHz) at LGA2011 are, but 130TDP with 16 threads and high clocks doesnt looks so real....32nm is for this too big think.

Taking into consideration that this socket will be also the workstation server one.Not really, 4C sandy is 216mm2 and it has igp.8C seems totally doable, and dont forget intel already made 8core nehalem ,on the 45nm node, with massive 24mb L3 cache it was 648mm2.So 8cores at 32nm around 400mm2 seems plausible.

from your point of view sure. but most folks aren't benchers, extreme overclockers. Intel would be better off introducing FEATURES instead of just performance increase alone.

most non gamer consumers dont even use the horse power of a quad and when they do, its for video encoding. Intel's quick sync imo is a revolution in that regard which didn't get much press for due their mobo fiasco and some "expert" reviews not really caring about such things.

If you have a Sandybridge, even a nehalem. where's the need for a consumer to buy a ivy? what does it provide apart from raw performance that a consumer would want to spend atleast $700 to to upgrade his computer or spend $1000+ to buy a new one? Most consumers are already moving to laptops anyway.. and i haven't even mentioned tablets.

965/975 supported die shrinks, so have p55/x58, p67 supporting ivy bridge isn't progress. If p67 supports the new arch that comes on 22nm, that will be impressive.

You can see hints in certain BIOSes that hint to much more capable chips. Such as in certain BIOSes they have a list of Multipliers and the multis are in the 60s.

I think since ivybridge is just basically a die shrink of sandy bridge and the fact that is seems to only support dual channel RAM as per that slide, that it will be on P67.

Also from the realworld article on SB and LGA 2011 it seems like LGA2011 will be a server part that is going to settle well with enthusiasts.

I knew Ivy would be coming to P67 :yepp: Its only logical. AFAIK Ivy isn't much more than some architectural tweaks, die shrink and a improved IGP. Don't need a new socket for that.

Ivy Bridge is PCIe3. Unless Intel makes it capable of running in PCIe2 mode then it won't be compatible. Most enthusiasts will buy a new mobo for the PCIe3 slots anyways

Whispers are us socket 1155 owners will see 6 and 8 core Ivy chips, but only time will tell if thats true.

definately hope so! I'd get my hands on one of those and settle for a while, make a good "future" proof rig :) :D

It would be nice, but those chips will be crazy expensive knowing intel for about 3 years after their release. Intel basically never cut prices :down:

joke?:rofl: CPUs are not GPUs...Maybe in some situation can be 20% better, but not average. Clocks to clocks maybe 5%. Others will be about higher CPU stock clocks, implementation some instruction=specific improvement, not much software support AVX now, new DX11 HD graphics etc.

I think people are getting a little turned around with that 20% figure. The rumor I've heard is that the IGP in Ivy will be 20% better than the IGP in Sandy. Not that the CPU part in Ivy will be 20% better than the CPU part in Sandy.

Well know one knew that Sandybridge would be able to clock that high on AIR, i remember everyone was mentioning DMI clocking and crying because no blck clocking.. its a whole new die shrink+igp, I dont see why they'd bring out a new architecture with just a new IGP/IMC doesnt make sense..

Die shrink to 32nm alone was enough to start the super-high OC bells ringing. ;) Perhaps its just me, but I do feel intel are missing a beat with only the 2500 and 2600 Sands being offered in "K" flavour. Whats wrong with a 2400k for say around £160?

Z68 chipset and think in Q2 we will see next SB models

Who would then buy 2500K anymore since 2400K would mean same thing,since multi is unlocked? :) It would be nice to see a dual-core with Hyper-Threading unlocked,cheap and very good for benches :D

Speed binning is very accurate now. Hell, if intel couldn't be arsed to speed bin these theoretical 2400k chips they could simply bring out a 2400k with a max multi of 45x. Its not rocket science, intel test every CPU they make. Weaker cores would make a 2400k, stronger cores 2500k, and the strongest cores 2600k.

Screw 2400K in this case, then. I personally think even 58x limit is quite ridiculous, if it's an unlocked part, unlock it properly...

5300 MHz really starts to heat in my case, past 54X it's overkill for daily use.
The problem is more about Bclk and lottery chip IMHO.

Do we think IvyBridge CPU's will have graphics that compete at all with modern gaming GPUs? That would be about the only reason I could see waiting to buy a Z68 board.

According to leaked info IB's GPU should be 60% faster than HD3000 in SB. That's still a lot slower than 5550,a level of performance that will be in Fusion A series (Llano).If anything IB will be a step in right direction,with DX11 support and still solid perf. jump over HD3000.But it won't be close to modern "gaming" GPUs.

The only people that would say that are those who get SB chips by the trayful from sponsors to blow up at will with all kinds of crazy voltages. For others, 63x ("limit" on my chip) you don't have a hope in hell of reaching. A 2400K actually makes a lot of scence. Not many people want to drop £200-£300 on a CPU, but most you will find are fairly open to spending around the £160 mark because its not psycologically as big.

Come on Intel...give me 8 physical cores and 5 Ghz!

A chip that maxes out on air frankly sucks for Xtreme crowd.

1. Not really. Apart from those with sponsors the only others would be people with quite deep pockets.

2. Source is my UEFI. Since updating from 1.43A I don't have 63x multi anymore :shrug: Its gone back to 60x with official 1.5. I'm not gonna mess around flashing the UEFI just for a screenshot, so heres the 60x from 1.5.

any engineer can share at what nm size we start to ruin Moore's law based on the constraints of basic physics?

I mean how many nanometers across is say a three molecule thick piece of silicon?

How about a twenty molecule thick strand of silicon - how many nanometers thick is that?

You would expect as the conductive strands became incredibly thin that errors and power leakage would increase...

How LOW can Intel go before a new model is required for progress?

I will answer my own question if anyone else is curious and did not already know this.

1 nanometer = 10 atoms.

So, obviously Intel is making transistors 220 atoms thick at 22nm - that is an incredible accomplishment when you think that they are producing a recordable on/off state for the processor to record at a size so incredibly small - I mean only 220 ATOMS across!

One problem though is apparently about to hit Intel and all computing enthusiasts in the face and it is not readily avoidable - it is called the laws of quantum physics.

Unless quantum physics collapses - there will NEVER be 1nm silicon transistors.

The reason is that at 1nm the on/off state can no longer be controlled with a flow of electrons (electricity).

I don't understand quantum physics - (few humans do or ever have) but apparently under the laws of things the size of 1nm, there is NO on or off for a transistor - electrons jump around, and dissapear and reappear all over the place and the very act of trying to observe whether the transistor is in an on or off state necessary to record for processing becomes an act that can change the state! Computing breaks down.

I don't know what the limit will be - but some suggest that unless we can start to reach for some new physics - transistors CANNOT get smaller than around 6nm.

So there are only a few shrinkages left before efficiency/architecture or operating frequency improvements will be all we have.

I feel eventually we will reach a scientific breakthrough that will allow progress to continue - but we may all be facing a 2020 where computer progress rapidly slows down for YEARS!

Assuming IB comes with a PCIe 3.0 controller, if you dropped it in any current (P67) high end motherboard you'd be limited to PCIe 2.0 speeds right? Since most boards come equipped with PCIe 2.0 speced(?) multiplexing hardware (like ASMT lane switches) that allows either a x16/x0 or x8/x8 split.

Ironically entry level boards where all CPU lanes are hardwired to a slot don't have this limitation and could take full advantage of the 3.0 controller (provided cougar point gets validated).

yes i assume so, almost all boards use the ASMT MUX/DEMUX on the boards without NF200 and most are like this, each switch is connected to half the PCI-E lanes, 4 switches for 2 16x/8x slots.

This will be the case, ofc if you don't use a board with additional NF200 switch or and in most case only one GPU .. Peoples who use CFX and SLI and want 16/16x and the new "feature "will change their board ..
for other who don't care they will be able to just update their CPU, flash the bios with the last one. and keep their system like this or upgrade later .

Intel just bring back what it was possible before with Socket 775... when Process change and cpu series have push the same motherboard from
Pentium 4-5 to first Core2Duo and Core2quad and different chipset.... P35-P45-X48 etc etc ..
Many boards was just bring compatible by a bios update.

That's not a launch date of IvyB.,just a preview. SB will effectively launch (again) in April on 32nm and intel will milk it approx one year.Then in Q1 2012 or ,in best case, Q4 this year they will launch IB for mainstream desktop/mobile.

I don't understand how these questions creep up everytime intel is about to release, or talks about a future release, in the core microARCH.
Not to sound rude, but have you not been paying attention to the last 3 launches since 2006? tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock?
Nothing is changing with sandy and ivy. Just like Conroe/Penryn and Nehalem/Westmere before it, Sandy/Ivy will have skus that cover all segments of the market.

Mobile/Desktop/Server - and you know they will have mutiple skus within each segment to cover all the markets, enthusiast, performance, mainstream etc.

Oh yeah.... I think they said all of us 1156 owners "would only need a simple bios update" to run Sandy Bridge. I sure miss seeing sockets with very long longevity like 775.

that is why i am so hesitant to upgrade my system. i do want pcie 3.0 for a little bit of future proofing but not if intel is going to drop support for it less than 2 years down the line. apparently the high end will be socket 2011 so thats another socket. if they would keep 1155 for the mainstream and 2011 for the performance/server market for a while i would be happen

i have an aging 775 dual core and im itching to upgrade :)
