GTX460 Blocks

Info so far, if anyone finds any more info I'll update this post:

Yes/Probably:

EK: Yes
"We started developing new water block for Nvidia 460GTX reference design."

Koolance: Yes
"Koolance is currently working on a full coverage video block for the new NVIDIA GTX 460. Additional updates will be posted here when available."

Watercool: Probably,
Its on their Wishlist on their forum

No/Unlikely:

AquaGrafx: No
"We will not offer a block for this card since the layout madness has already started and we know from the past that only a handful of people with these mid-range cards buy a block that costs around 50% of the cards price."

XSPC: Unlikely??
They don't even have a block for the 465/470, only the 480

Unknown:
DangerDen
Bitspower

We talkin about both 460s? I wasnt even aware of this to be honest lol, i thought EK or koolance would of had a block for sure?!!!

Aqua Computer does have a point. I'd be inclined to just throw on a universal block with some heatsinks. of course there are always people such as DB who just love the bling. You can always trust on them to buy the blocks (provided they have that card, and not the more blingy 480).

I know the 460 isn't as extreme as the 480 but I think its going to be as popular as the GTX260 with enthusiasts/folders/crunchers and in SLI does some serious damage to the 480 in price/perf.

Yeah thats what it says, they have posted on their web sites they are working on blocks for the reference card designs.

Personally, I think I am sticking to the universal block this round. The GPU-220 fits my GTX470's along with the stock memory/VRM cooler and fan and does a great job of cutting load temps in half. Sure, I really like FC blocks, but the universal ends up being half the cost.

hmm not much choice for the 460. ^ Gpu 220 is a nice block but has a few problems apparently

Really? Mind sharing with us what you've heard and found?

Buy a cheaper card and add $100 to the cost? Why not at least give the waterblock something worthwhile like a 470 or 480.

For looks :p:

Yes, I am dead serious. Also that the GTX470/GTX480 can not bitstream audio.

I already have a GTX460 w/ a reference PCB on its way. Just waiting for EK to release the block for it. http://smiliesftw.com/x/fingersx.gif

oh gowd do yourself a freaken favor.

Dont watercool the 460GTX.. and instead use funds on a 480GTX.
OR Go SLI on 2 460GTX. and Air cool both of them.

Sometimes i honestly dont understand the mentality of people.

Hardware first and primary.
Cooling should be secondary.

Why? its easier to upgrade cooling then it is to upgrade entire hardware.

i would grab another 460 and go SLI and forget a full card block.

The whole point in the 460 was lower thermals... less power draw... and a overall cooler card.. yet you guys want to watercool it and make it cost as much as a 480GTX?

I've got some GPU only blocks sitting around. Might as well buy some ram sinks and clock the hell out of it.

i have no quams if you are gonna core only it.

That would be a smarter idea... at least u can recycle the core only blocks, and not worry about GPU board revisions when your card dies on accident.

But i heard the 460 is gonna have one hell of a monkey pcb version.
So, as they say in the art of war, sometimes not fighting the battle is the best course of action.

NaeKuh: from what i've heard of overclockability of 460s, it might be even better choice then 465/470, especially price wise. And SLI on air .. nooooise :(. Ok, it's bad idea to make fullcover for cheap cards with mirriads of custom PCBs, but what's wrong with good old MCW60/MCW80? Cheap, universal, does the job (looks uglier though :( )

and as i have no problems with guys who are gonna core only this card.

its just you were much better off going on a 480GTX and air cooling it, until you had funds, and then watercooling that later in the future.

The 480GTX is still reference design, and i think its intended to stay on reference design.

1. Stock cooling is too loud when you run the GPU @ full load 24/7 (F@H)
2. GTX480 can not bitstream audio over HDMI.
3. GTX480 is way to large for the MATX case I use.

1. really? the sinks i saw on AT were quite massive, and he even said it was pretty quiet.

2. You mean Do you really need Bitstream?
Do you have your HTPC connected to a Stereo reciever and then the reciever to the TV?
3. I have no comment on this one, as you are correct.. yet you have enough room for water?

NaeKuh: i'd wait for 2nd gen fermi anyway. I don't like power thirstyness/performance ratio of current ones, and as history has shown many times over, usually 2nd generation in new arch from nvidia with flaws being worked are almost always hits. 300W for current 480 like for dual-gpu 5970, but only 15% faster then half of it (5870)? :shakes:

Definitely need to bitstream as it will be used for bluray playback on an HTPC.

And the case is a Lian Li PC-V352 which can just barely fit a 2x120mm radiator w/ a bit of modification.

If MSI releases one with the frozer on it I might get that. But if I have the blocks sitting about I say why not.

Retail 460's are proving to be noisy SOB's because the manu's sent non retail kit to the review sites so that they all come out quiet, cool and rosy. Now people are getting them in their hands they are finding they have different fans, different cowls and missing heatsinks to shave costs. :(

There are reference 460's so blocks shouldn't be a problem.

I'd get more PPD or RAC with 2 x 460's than 1 480, it would use pretty much the same power and would cost less to buy.

But by all means if you want core only blocks then thats fine as well :) I just thought there might be people in the liquid cooling section interested in the subject of blocks for what will probably be a popular card.

A thread written - "unfortunately" - in german language in Hardware-Luxx-Forum also shows the most recently known informations about the GTX 460 (and also GTX 465/470/480). If you were interested in, just take a look: nVidia GeForce GTX 4XX (aka Fermi) - WAKÜ-Sammelthread (including info's, different layouts of the PCB, etc.). ;)

Agreed +1. well put NaeKuh.....

just to clarify some issues within this thread, take a look here guys, Seems like the gigabyte 1gb 460 is quiet as...

what about core blocks and swiftech unisink?

what about palit gainward cards?

I don't Swiftech announced a heatsink for it yet.

Any one here buy a MSI N460GTX CYCLONE card? Just bought one for a friends build 1GB versional back in stock at the egg.
Going by that tweaktown review the MSI N460GTX CYCLONE is the quietest @56.7 not bad at all also good OCer.

VID-NX460 (GTX 460)

EK-FC460 GTX

Half of card price for full cover? :/
I'll keep on promoting universal GPU waterblock usage for low end cards. They do the job, are cheaper, are reusable after upgrades. Leave expensive full cover blocks which are specific only to some particular model of gpu for top-end cards where wb price isn't that high compared to that of card itself, where you won't upgrade card that soon and so on.

I think Koolance's GPU-220 is the only core-only block that would support the GTX460....reference mounting holes are not a square.

Guapa5000 beat me to it. Our GTX 460 block is now available. Pics are below. It uses 0.5mm microfins on the GPU and VRM like our GTX 480 block.

(Just to show it CAN be run without LED's :) ):

Wow, wicked inner design Tim ! Also love the blue Koolance logo :).

It's a shame you guys didn't do a GTX470 block that had the LED setup also. Think that would have sealed it for me.

Yeah. It's really easy to do, though. The acrylic on the VID-NX470 is the same thickness as the VID-NX460 (8mm). We use 3mm wide LED's. So a couple small holes in the bottom would do it:

Hopefully e-tailers will start showing stock here soon.

Was it really necessary to get water over mosfets (koolance block)?
It looks PITA to assembly IMO.
I just hate too many orings when it comes to opening and cleaning blocks.

VR microfins *might* be considered overkill here. But if you're already water cooling the GTX 460, why not go all the way? :)

How about because ppl have been screaming for MOSFETs to be actively cooled?

Tackleberry is referring to the triple plated bridge (or whatever NaeKuh and Bei Fei named it when they designed it for mobo blocks) which seems to pass over some capacitors. It got me wondering as well as to why a more 'normal' method wasn't possible :).

Looks like they had to dodge some caps. Honestly, I don't really see a problem with assembly, but then, I'm pretty mechanically inclined.

That's a bummer, considering I have a ref GTX460 coming in... What are the chances swiftech will release an adapter plate for MCW60/80 ? Can we put you in charge of finding that out,Vapor ?:)

According to the Hardwareluxx link posted on page 1, AquaComputer are designing a block for the GTX460.

So, we might have a good looking block for the 460 after all.

Now, as for people suggesting we just get a 480... what's the point? Rumor is that the 480 will be phased out, its next iteration likely based on dual GF104s. Don't see a point in buying a card that's been out-revisioned.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion from my statement? I take my blocks apart all the time, I'm saying I've never had a problem getting any of them back together, all it takes is some careful planning.

The Gainward GTX460 GS/GLH cards (And most likely the Palit's) have a more standard approx. 53mm x 53mm hole pattern :)
So the MCW80 GPU cooler should go straight on.

Beautiful as always. I like the Ek Block and the Aqua Computer Block but for my taste the Koolance it's too much "tunning"

I wonder if Swiftech will release some unisink for 460s.

I'll go with Aqua blocks any day, they are beautiful :D

I'm hearing that the first EK blocks will be ready in a week or so...

Look what I found:

http://imgur.com/8raPm.jpg

http://imgur.com/Yx4Wq.jpg

Got one coming tommorow :D

I finally got my Koolance blocks. The instructions claim to use gray thermal pads yet the only colours included are pink and brown. :p:
EDIT: Maybe they are actually grey. Still not sure why there is pink included though.
Otherwise they look like fantastic blocks.

the gray is the thin one regardless.
They used to come in white! :P

The pink is usually the thick one.

The gray has 2 sides you peal, the pink only has 1.

On the pink i noticed its best to use the white side on the mosfet, and the pink hard side on the block directly. (should you ever have to use the pink one).
The gray is a standard tim pad, and i use it in everything outside of waterblocks as well.

The pink is there when you have a gap.
Not all gpu's will be 100% perfect.
You might have something a tad bit lower then what its normally at.
In this case you will use the pink one.

B4 you hard mount the block, make sure you lay the pads out, and then apply slight pressure where the pads are.
See if you get a imprint.
If not then you need to upgrade your pad to the pink one.

But if u dont touch the pink one, dont freak out, koolance just gives you "excess" incase you need it.

One more thing if anyone was hoping these are single slot blocks (like me) you may be a tad disappointed. The screws holding the block together stick out a tad making it slightly larger than single slot. If you plan on having a card next to it you will need to insulate the back of the adjacent card (which is what I'll be using the pink thermal pads for).

Sexy things...

I'm looking to "submerge" my GTX460 as well with EK's Nickel block, but I was hoping I'd see a few vids or detailed worklogs on mounting the thing first. It is, after all, a fairly new product - lessons are yet to be learned.

Just put an EK on my 460, easy as is usual with EK blocks, i.e. fiddly standoffs

Otherwise went on smooth.

Biffa, did you do any mounting videos or anything like that? :)

Mine came with screws that have 6mm long thread and 4mm standoffs. After putting on the washer and taking into account the card thickness, I didn't have any threads left to screw it onto the block, any idea what's going on?

Look at the instructions. Standoffs go on the same side as the block.

Of course they should and that has no bearing on the threads left either.

Screw->Washer->Card->Standoff->no threads left. Aren't m3x8 screws supposed to have 8mm of threading? My screws in both packages have only 6mm of threading.

There is a +/- tolerance on everything made, what that # is, is dependent upon how mission critical the part is. Also seeing it's a screw (and likely made on a screw machine) it likely took 5-8 seconds to make, now times that by an average work shift of 8 hrs and it quickly adds up to not being able to check each and every last screw that is made so some short/long ones will get through the QA/QC process. In your case though, that seems to bit a good bit short and sounds like it may be a packaging error on EK's part.

Looks interesting. I hope they won't be priced and won't perform like their 480 blocks relative to others. If they will, highest price for worst cooling .. even more so if it's for cheap gpu, where block price matters so much more .. will simply be disasterous.

4 of the blocks had the same error, I'm surprised I'm the only one on XS with this problem. Anyway I bought some m3x8 screws (real ones!) and its all good.

A quick check revealed that m3x6 screws come in boxes of 100. Now 8 screws per block, that box would take care of 12.5 blocks (less if they toss in a spare or two). . .you have 4 of them, which leaves 9.5 blocks. So there are 10 blocks (assuming EK didn't realize there was a problem) floating around out there, the odds of the ppl that buy them being members here as well are pretty high.

Anyway, good to hear it's all good now.

No problem with screws on mine

problem with ek block screws.
i buy 10 screws 10mm for used.

Guys, just wanted to say if you have a MCW60 swiftech block and a GT200 plate for it , you can drill new holes on it,to mount on a reference GTX 460 :) Measure carefully and be very cautious not to over tighten, just tighten enough to hold it in place ,again it is very important not to over tighten.

why even bother get FC for 460. with added block price you can get a 470 or 5870. if you just want cool and quiet, the 460 already cool and quiet.

The MSI Hawk has a sweet stock heatsink that I'd almost never take off...

right, $240 for 460 +$100 for block each x3 $1k+. $1k get you 2 480 + 2 waterblock for 480, still has better performance than 460, you can also oc 480. i guess i don't see the benefit of a waterblock thats half price of the actual video card.

And I can get 36k PPD (3 x GTX460) vs 30k PPD (2 * GTX480) for folding@home. GTX460's aren't even tri-SLI'able.
