NVIDIA has developed a GeForce PC kit to provide DIYers with an optimized PC and enable them to enjoy building the PC by themselves.

The PC Kit includes:

A bunch of old components riding on the back of an Ultra branded power supply. It's marketing and licensing at its best. Needless to say is this Nvidia's first actual *pile* of crap?

I either hope the 9800gt has gotten a lot more energy efficient, or that Ultra builds their 500w version of that lifetime series unit better than the "650w" units. Those were sometimes bad enough to blow with a single 8800gt, in a core 2 quad ustem.

They even used their most cheerished GPU (G92) as the star.

If its well priced, I see nothing wrong with it. I could imagine Intel would have gave them a sweet deal for including their processor. Like it or not, Intel has more to gain from partnering with NV than AMD.

They should have still stepped up the processor those. If they price this under 350 dollars, than its not a bad deal. The max they can charge for this is 425 not including an OS. Anything else is overpriced.

Just take a look at what the oems are pushing as "high performance", this isn't that bad of a package for newb first ground up build.

If this is that bloody annoying LG DVD burner (with the Bluebird bull:banana::banana::banana::banana: on it, which prompts you to install adware every time you close an empty tray), they have a REAL problem.
250GB hard drive, when 500GB drives are $10-15 more and have twice the storage for all your meaty games.



Hey, at least they sell the chassis alone.

Sure there are always better parts but the goal seems to focus on the building process/aspect not necessarily performance which is quite obvious from the parts list and the description.

Which would still have led them to using a GeForce 9000 motherboard and not some shoddy G31 thing. Then again, I suppose they're right. It's easier to setup an Intel board than their own. The question is, if they're selling a barebones, why limit it so much? The MSI board isn't totally horrible, but the #1 issue I spotted was no gigabit LAN in addition to the hard drive's capacity.

Do not question Dear Leaders methods.

This is not designed for people like us.

This is designed for your average joe to walk into a shop, see the shiny colour-coded box's, buy it, build it, and say "I did that".

If it's their first PC, then Nvidia will likely get repeat custom from them further down the road. First impressions count, assuming it doesn't blow up on them, or take their house out in a fireball, then this is what they will think of when building a new one.

It's the reason marketing exists. The fact that people in the know Nvidia's marketing is often plain wrong with their facts is totally irrelevant, because marketing does usually work on it's target audience, which we are most certainly not.

They really seem to wanna offer some low budget PC eh? Everything it's got is like cheap crap, the comp case for example is one of the entry-level Coolermaster Elite ~$50 cases. This should cost like 350~$399 I suppose.

well its supposed to be a price perf pc i guess, and it def sounds good in that regard... i mean this thing is good enough to play every game out there at high res, except for some very demanding games which it can still play, just not at max...

I just priced everything out at newegg.com except the power supply and this system costs 470.

Its not crazy terribly priced, however its not close to being a good deal.

The only place I could see this being a good deal if it was sold in Block and mortar stores.

Considering this is only being sold at tigerdirect. This looks like a tigerdirect bundle more than anything and tigerdirect bundles are rarely well priced.

I just priced this at tigerdirect and the total was 500.91.

If I had 500 dollars to spend, I would definitely spend it on something else. You could do worse those as they are not really overcharging you.

The power supply wasn't available at newegg. So I grabbed something like it. The power supply at tiger direct is 40 dollars so minus 18 dollars. Thus 470.

I really don't know why they use a laptop 7200rpm HD in the bundle. Probably tigerdirect way of clearing out old components.

I knew it, NVIDIA is going to rip people off with this "NVIDIA built" PC while you can build your own at a cheaper price. Fail NVIDIA, GTFO, why not entertain us by giving more info on Fermi and benchmarks instead.

This is more tigerdirect than anything. If you get their emails, you know that they love to bundle junk more than anything. This is sadly one of their better bundles. They still bundle Pentium 4 to this day.

It sad Nvidia let them put their name on it. But recently that what Nvidia has been lately, a sad sad company.

If you look at all three links, tigerdirect, compusa and compusa retail stores, they all say the included harddrive is a Seagate ST9250410AS Momentus 7200.4 Hard Drive.

Saaya, I am surprised your using such a cheap Power supply in your argument. Sure Ultra is not the best(it actually bad), but I would assume that with a lifetime warranty, they are not using a crap oem like deer.

Tigerdirect usually offers terrible price to performance ratios. Look at this bundle.

The NV bundle looks like a bargain in comparison.

As far as I can see they have simply made a mistake or just plain lied with the marketing blurb...

What the advertising leader on the web page for this kit should have really said is

"Build your own *entry level* rig with an NVIDIA® GeForce® PC kit, customized to provide an easy, first time building experience with GeForce graphics."

Perhaps then they would be getting some praise for this kit rather than being ridiculed.

At the rate how f-ed up this is, if I were a complete computer noob I'd rather ask someone to assemble a rig for me.

But neither of those are the main argument. The fact that nVidia are willing to tack their name unto this, somehow making this the "definitive" Geforce kit, is just puke inducing.

It's their loss though, when people dumb enough to get this finally realize that the rig's incompetent enough to play most stuff without stuttering its way there thanks to the RAM/vRAM amount though.

That system would be suited for 1024x768-1280x1024 ( max ) with moderate settings, as far as current games are concerned. My issue with it isn't the fact I wouldn't buy it but the fact that their PR and marketing direction is very misleading. If they pushed this with words like "starter", "budget" , "affordable" then perhaps but trying to make it out to be way more than it is, is just unethical. "Hey guys, check out our awesome super duper high end gaming system that you can build yourself! Yeah!" Apparently their marketing departments need to maintain the size of their finctional man hoods (aka Nvidia's brand name) by touting anything with the word "Nvidia" on it as the second coming of Jesus... Its just a tad retarded. I'm not offended by the concept but by its piss poor execution of a pontentially good idea. They are just trying to take advantage of their brand awareness and cash in. Stalker and dirt 2 are both going to be hard pressed to play any of those titles in directx 11 mode on a 5570.

The 8800 might not be cutting edge per see, but it's a step up from consoles.

Most of the public see console hardware as cutting edge.

People aren't as dumb as you seem to think. The non-tech people I know understand quite well that the XBOX 360 or PS3 are a couple of years old, and thus quite 'obsolete' in term of hardware.

Exactly you hit the nail on the head!

Im not a huge nvidia fan, but I actually really like the idea! OK if you price all the stuff up and do it yourself you can get a better deal, but thats not who its trying to target.

Personally, I think if they were going to do this, they should (I know nothing about intels btw), market it with a decent cooler and promote the scope for overclocking. So OK it starts of average at best, but if ppl are able to OC the balls off it safely then that would make it a worthwhile buy.

Yea I do agree, marketing it as 'high end' is wrong, but Considering a mate of mine has pretty much this setup and he can play most games on high/highest settings then maybe in relation to the games out there its not so bad.

Yeah you 100% right. It's just hard to accept from what we know. I react the exact same with apple products (and they are def not design for our market).

Good idea, but the rest is made of fail.

Lets face it, most people don't have a 30" screen and don't need a highend pc to play games, budget hardware is good enough for the majority.
Combine that with the ever increasing pressure on the pc from consoles and there is a clear need for a cheap gaming capable pc.

However, this is not cheap and there is something between the ancient trash hw they use and highend, but oh well, at least they are not trying to sell a pc using igp as gaming capable like too many oems do.

If they would just update the components a bit, lower the price and focus the advertising around the fact that a gaming capable pc doesn't have to cost a arm and leg it could end up as good product.

For the first time in history. . . I think a company (nvidia) just trolled the consumer. They must be getting epic lulz.

Terrible hardware choices.
They should've made one in a decent case with i7, Fermi and 3D glasses kit.

the only way you can get people to not just build their own $500 pc is to have the effective price of the components in this bundle below the retail price of them, enough so that people are willing to lose the flexibility of choosing their own components in order to save money.

As the saying goes, you have to learn to walk before you run.

Just like Radioshack offered all the cheesy electronics kits (by todays standards) back in the day for the beginner to get familiar and learn to build a basic circuit themselves.

Whats the point in a kit if you just get somebody experienced to build you a rig, there's something to be learned by taking the initiative and making that first step yourself.

When the folks who buy this kit realize what they have the kit has served its purpose. They built their first pc, got familiar with the process and components and now maybe have a grasp of what they may want in their next build.

I would imagine for most beginners their first pc probably wasn't even as good as this kit is. Its definitely better than entry level and a long way from high end but its not bad for a starter kit.

I would love to see more high end DIY kits. Even Newegg's $4700 DIY kit is at least decent, especially compared to this $500 kit.

I totally agree that they need a better kit to represent their brand. Here's what I'd like to see for an Nvidia kit:

Intel Core i7 920 cpu
Intel X25-M G2 160GB SSD boot drive
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB HDD data drive
Asus P6X58D motherboard
Corsair 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Dominator memory
Corsair 800D case
NVidia GTX 470 gpu
Nvidia 3D glasses

Something like that would much better represent the brand, I would think.

This is obviously not for people who can build their own rigs, because we can put better parts, they will sell these, because there are more of those who cant, then who can.

Well, if you look at it from Apples standpoint, that's a pretty good deal if it cost 450$ish in parts. It should have options to change the video card and cpu, but I guess it's another way for Nvidia to liquidate their stock of old 8800's.

An Apple Mac pro with a single quad xeon, 3gigs ram, 640gb hd, a superdrive, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB is 2500$ base price. Now that is absurd.

ati has nothing even close to that price perf wise...
the 5750 is the only thing near it and it starts at 150$... thats quite a big dx11 tax there... thats not worth it for those price segments...

the 512mb is an alternative to a G92 card, but idk... isnt a GTS250 faster? and you can get a 1gb gts250 for 99$, thats damn good...
the 1gb 4770 is ridiculous, you can almost get a 5750 with 1gb for that price... whod buy a 4770 for the same price as a 5750?

ive built several gaming pcs for friends a couple of years back and always used the cheapest 400-500W cr4p that came bundled with the cheapest cr4-p cases... and while i had 1 DOA, after it was replaced, which was immediatly since the shop swaps those, there havent been problems with those pcs... ever... :shrug:

unless you build a real highend pc or plan to overclock PSUs are way overrated in my experience... :shrug:

i think it could play 1680x1050 fine in most games...
overall, i like the idea... its basically an attempt at making people look at a pc like a console...

but thats stupid because you cant beat consoles when it comes to price performance... as the hardware is subsidized heavily for consoles...
so focusing on price is the wrong way to go, they ned to focus on features...
theres a whole lot more you can do with pcs that you cant do with consoles... and gaming wise pcs can also offer a much better experience than consoles...

i think that idea was good, but the way they did it was stupid...
they should have gone for a 1000us$ mark instead and put together a pc that is a REAL kick4ss system. something that offers better gameplay than consoles... maybe even with 3d display...

Had they started this a year or more ago, nobody would be giving them much flak. The fact that they're doing this in 2010 is what's pissing people off. 2GB RAM and a 250GB hard drive is a joke. This system is a blast from the past; firmly in mid-2007 territory so far as speed is concerned.

For the cost yes, but considering alot of HP / Gateways $800-1400 models, this statement is not true. They include GTX 260s with i5/i7s/Phenom 2s with 6+ GB of ram and much larger HDs with many of their machines now...

If they sold this in a big box store with a detailed instruction manual, then it could have a life. Selling it on an online etailer however is... fail. Most people who buy online tend to know better or soon learn better ( due to comparitive shopping being much eaiser )

Not to pick fights but I still have a G92 (8800GT 512 aka 9800GT ) and they struggle at 1650x1050 in most games now days. I tend to run stuff at 1280x800 tops with no AA and medium to high settings. Hell even the 4870 has trouble in some games at 1680x1050 now. I suppose its down to what you deem "playable" but in my book, they don't have the juice anymore.

Anyways I still stand by the fact Nvidia *could* have made something out of this but it just wasn't done properly to have a real shot. With proper marketing, and availability in retail stores, they'd move a fair few units. When I worked retail I ran into countless customers seeking an affordable, store bought machine that could play games reasonably.

More than you can count and probably more than they can count too. Figure at least in the hundreds of thousands, at a bare minimum, going up into the millions. For a "gaming" card, that's insane; it's definitely their most successful single design, regardless of community response. A 9800GT is nothing to be scoffed at; there's much better AND much worse for the price, but not in nVidia's camp. From a business standpoint, G92 has defined the past few years at nVidia.

This "kit" might work if they pre-built.

But if they are for people who actually understands how to build a computer, it won't work considering that most people that understands computer components will know that they can build a faster computer for a lower price.

im not sure how much better you can make something for just $500.
if you could put in a 4850 and athlon x4 620 in something at that price, that would be a good deal better.

Agreed on the etailer part. Marketed properly at a brick and mortar, it would work. I don't see the big three ( HP, Dell, Other) too happy about it since the marketing would essentially say that this $500 dollar machine can game better than that i5 equipped, 8 GB rammed, $1200 machine.

Seems like a nice way to introduce someone into the world of PC building if they've never done it before. I guess at under $500 it's not a bad deal by any means, since it has decent components, but I think anyone who has done a bit of research will opt for selecting their own components individually.

Exactly :up: They like their high margins (given all oems use mainly lower end bulk parts ; eg no name memory, garbage powersupplys, basic / limited motherboard, and in most cases half ass plastic cases with no airflow ) and stuff like this would really kick up some dirt in their faces.
