i7 Computer Boot Issue

My power-supply failed in my i7 rig, causing me to replace it with a Corsair Kw PSU. When I start the computer it passes POST, but then a few seconds later it just shuts off. I have tried clearing BIOS, booting with only one stick of RAM, and getting into BIOS long enough to load "failsafe defaults."

The computer's specifications:

Core i7 920
Gigabyte x58 UD4P
G.Skill 3x2GB PC3-12800
XFX GTX 285 1GB (x2, SLi)
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
Corsair HX1000 PSU

What should I do next, what could be causing my issue? Its probably something easy as I have been building PCs for quite a few years, and its probably something I missed. Can y'all help me out?

is this at stock settings (it is) [edit - got any other RAM to try?]

i've got that PSU here no issues in terms of compatibility ok so it's gotta be something simple

i would suggest pull the board and plugging nothing but PSU and keyboard/gfx for basic bootup

you might have some other issues if it persists
your dead PSU might have caused something else some damage

Yeah, thats whats so confusing. If the components were broke it wouldnt POST, but if they were functioning, it does, but shuts off.... :confused:

I dont have any other DDR3, which is messed up because I have about 30 GB worth of assorted DDR2 sticks...

Should I try booting without the second GPU?

Well, when PSU's fail (die), there is always a chance of damaging other components that are connected directly to PSU. This includes mobo, HDD, GFX and optical devices + some indirectly connected like RAM.
As stupid as it might sound, you have to include that into testing. However testing this may be problematic. If any of your friends has the Core i7 platform, ask them if they can lend you their system for testing. You don't need to reinstall anything since drivers for chipset (X58) will work with your system anyway. Connect everything to new mobo and test. See if it's failing again. Then just start to add his components into the system till the system boots normaly. The last device that makes the system bootable was failing in your system. It's a very time consuming process but in your case unfortunately the only one. Just remember to start with mobo and progress further with devices connected to it.

Too bad all my friends are poor...

For instance, one of them is still on a P4 531 and a 7900GS for his gaming rig... :p:

EDIT: I think it might have something to do with the RAM. I started the computer and had enough time to turn Turbo mode off, and increase RAM voltage to 1.64v. The computer then proceeded to boot up and almost made it all the way into Windows, like two minutes, without shutting down. What do y'all make of that?

I know alot of people really like the HX1000, but I tried one and it did exactly the same thing on my i7. I took it back and got another one from a different batch and the same thing.

I had a moderate OC and 4 SATA drives along with a single 285. Same set-up was no problem for an Antec 850.

Wow, I should have gone with the Silverstone. :(

This PC build fried the Corsair 850 I had, I was hoping the 1kW would be enough. :(

did you try it with just mobo cpu ram hd and a single video?

No, that time was with everything. I will try that today.

do you have to unplug or power down the psu before you can try booting agian? i had a issue with a PSU no working on GENE, that required a bios update. accroding to the notes the mobo's overcurrent protection was kicking in cause the problem. only two ways to fix it, a psu of different internals or updating the bios. though you said it nearly makes it into windows before shutting down. makes me think it is heat related or cpu is damaged.

Well, I do have to power down the CPU before it will boot again if I want it to pass POST. If I just power on after it shuts off, it shuts off again before POST.

How would I flash bios if it shuts off? Wouldnt It be risking my board if it shuts off while updating....:shakes:

What ram do you have and what voltage does it require?
If you can make it into bios make sure its giving it enough voltage or it wont boot.
I know you said you made it in 1 time and set the voltage.
Try setting it higher.

I have G.Skill 3x2GB PC3-12800 RAM, its like this set: (RAM) but my set is only 1600 and runs 8-8-8-21 timings, at 1.6-1.65v. When I booted almost into windows I was using 1.64 V. It just did the same thing for me, but using 1.7v and 9-9-9-25 timings, so the voltage increase and laxer timings didnt help. Im using 1T, should I try 2T?

I just pray that when the PSU failed it didnt take anything with it.... :(

What Mhz are they running at?
Go on up to 1.9 and see what it does.
It wont hurt your ram at 1.9

what i was talking about is if you actually have to power down the psu first. as if the computer just shuts off you cant power it back up at all. in that case by cutting power to the psu things in a way get reset and allow the short powerup.

im not sure if it is possible to run 1T on i7, though i have never looked into that for ram.

not sure if your joking, DDR3-1066 with 1.7v.... might try DDR3-1066@1.5v@9-9-9-28 timings.

Im completely serious about the RAM, I put it up to 1.85 volts and it POSTed but then locked up... about 15 seconds later it shut off.... :mad:

I will try the laxer timings.

The UD4P is the F7 BIOS btw....

The 920 is a C0....

Yea if its running at 1066 1.7 should be plenty.
Check your divider and make sure its not set to something stupid.

well some ram ic's dont like tons of voltage when running such low speeds. that may just be the problem or well part of it.... have you also tried to see if you can boot into memtest86?

Okay, 9-9-9-28 2T with 1.64v got me less far into the boot process than my other tries... what should I do about CPU or NB voltages?

even with 1.5v? if the cpu speed isnt at stock then its hard to say, depends on where it is at now. did you manage to boot into a memtest86?

No, the burner is dead in this computer...

try a single stick one by one in the second slot from CPU and just boot at defaults

see if it boots

Tried with only one stick of RAM and it booted all the way into windows for about 30 seconds before shutting off.... we're getting closer. :)

Tired with one stick of RAM, once with each stick. First stick shut off half way into windows, second shut off when the Windows orb was glowing, and the last one made it in for about 5 seconds. This is with extra voltage on the CPU, and ICH.

Sounds like the board needs an RMA since it never did this before. Thats crazy you blew up a 850w with this thing. I ran x58 with 4850x2, 3 HD's tons of rans with 430w antec.

Did you ever try the PSU in that Q6600?

You need to find a way to test your ram.
They may have been damaged from the PSU.
Or order a couple cheap sticks and see if its the ram.

He just wants his computer to work. He gets stressed out and takes it out on me, and when Im not dedicating my full attention to it, he wants to go play with it more. He hasnt been able to access our finances for around a month now. He even offered to take it to a shop, if I didnt want to deal with it. My family is such that we dont spend money frivolously to keep up with the Joneses, and $200 for a new PSU, and then however much else is a hard burden to bear. I try to be upfront about whats going on with him so he can understand. I just dont know where to go from here. :(

Yeah, damn. This PC is so finicky. I like my old 1200MHz Celeron thats run at 1600MHz for the last 7 years, every day. :(

Yeah dude. I got this old P4 Prescott, the MSI board wasn't even designed for it. But its been washed in hot water, thrown around etc...still kickin

Yeah, I sent it back and they sent me a new one. I tried to sell it here but the mods got pissed off and now I cant see the FS sections :p:
