Hell, I typically only run my Q6600 at 3.2 despite it being capable quite easily of 3.6. Simply don't need the extra power for anything ATM so I'd rather have it run a bit cooler.
For truly "Xtreme!!!@! :up:) users however, these won't be particularly appealing other than for the sheer sake of variety. Which won't go very far. But of course, all of this is moot if you personally define enthusiasts as that top .1% of extremely high end users. :D

We have 10-15% higher prices than in central europe, and 30-40% higher than in US. So I'd expect P2 940BEs would go for ~220-230€ in central europe and around $260-270 in US, once there's actual availability.
The prices seem very reasonable, theres currently quite a big gap in the Intel lineup between $200 and $300 (Q9400 only) and AMD exploits this beautifully. Maybe this will get Intel to finally put their Q9x50 chips below the $300 mark, either that or they will need higher frequencies from the Q9x00 chips in order to compete on a price/performance level.
We are already buying them here (Greece) since last week...^^

At 220-240$, 920 will really be a sweet CPU to have. Its a very competitive price for a new build, especially if you drop in the overall platform cost. Of course, intel will be forced to cut prices on their 9X50 chips to compensate (the prices for 775 cpus can only go down anyway). More competition, better prices, good for all of us...^^

+1. I compare European and US prices quite often and I'd also say by seeing the finnish prices that 940BEs will go for ~260 - $270 more like 270 but then pretty soon settle for $260. And at least Germany will have some shops selling them for 220~230 EUR. If that's the case then it's very great deal I think concidering the cost of AMD motherboards too. The Q6600 will still be a problem though as long as they ship those 65nm quads but if they wouldn't exist and be sold this cheap AMD would sell a lot of these 2 CPUs.Quote:

I wasn't even aware that there was a AMD DDR3 board on the market yet, so who cares. These chips were intended to be used with AM2+ when they were released, I thought DDR3 IMC were due out much later this year.
There is an AM3 DDR3 board announced.
XS AMD section had a little discussion where we suspected that even old Phenom 1s had DDR3 support in their MCs... just that AMD probably delayed the platform.
We shall wait and see what's the outcome, though.

AMD has the advantage right now, they know that many users of sb600-sb750 have this upgrade path which is cheaper than moving to any new platform Intel has. So if they want the fastest AMD has to offer this is the price you will pay. They are betting that many will rather just upgrade a cpu to improve their current system performance than to have to pay $400+ to move into a base Intel system.
Also want to mention that I paid $235 for my 9950BE the day it was released so this is pretty much about a $50 increase from their last top end cpu to the current.......but once again alot of improvements are going on here right off the bat stock clocks have moved from 2.6ghz to 3.0ghz so that in itself comparing clockspeed/price is a warranted price increase.
What percentage of the market do you think have a sb600-sb750? mabey 0.2%? So that is a advantage that 0.2% (probably less) MIGHT upgrade there cpu?Quote:

The upgrade argument works. I have some AM2+ mobos sitting around. Dropping $230 (assuming that's the price and the 920 OC's well) is good, thought not great. Its cheaper than building an intel board and going q6600.
AMD better do some hardcore commercialization to get this out there for anyone who ONLY buys Intel. That's where they should be relying. Upgraders alone won't cut it.
I know a guy who only buys intel, but upgrades maybe ever 5 years, which IMO is crazy slow. He wants a q6600 b/c of the legendary speed, but I think he should get this, just b/c of the price / performance ratio. I think you're crazy to get a q6600 at this point just due to the mobo costs if you want one that'll OC it well. Plus to get to 3.6ghz, you'll probably need h2O (at least thats what I've heard about the current q6600 chips, they don't OC as well).
3.6ghz on air beats my q6600 on water. It would effectively be just as fast and air cooled.
yes i already disproved that somewhere. the ddr3 controller was implemented on the original k10 but it was disabled through fuses until am3 comes out when it will be turned on. as cooper says its all in that guide along with a lot of good reading.Quote:

weird thing though, there is a Phenom 920 and 920 BE, with different product codes (HDX and HDZ respectively). I don't recall there being a 920 BE, so it must be an error.

Brother_Esau There are many that don't wear green blinders, and actually research things before they buy. He's right. It would be rediculous for him to buy a Ph2 at that price point when a Q6600 would outperform it. He didn't say anything about an i7, though I can see why you'd divert the subject. He can buy a full bare bones Q6600 system and have a very cost effective system.
Of course he could also buy that i7 system you mentioned at the higher price point and would be in a completely different league. Bringing up i7's in an AMD Thread is not a real smart move when the benchmarks are now out. You may not be aware of it, but it's not looking too good for AMD right now. That definitely won't make AMD look any better, and right now is not a good time to be posting stuff that's gonna further hurt AMD's sales.
Many of us do not want to see anything bad happen to AMD. Posting fanboy BS is only further hurting them.
For Q6600 being able to outperform it,the same must work at 3.7+Ghz on air cooling,and this is assuming parity in IPC between the two(which in real apps is not the case-Deneb will be somewhat faster,be it a few percent so Q6600 would need to run even above 3.7Ghz on air for 24/7).Quote:

We have been discussing the hwbox.gr review a lot.It has a thread of its own... And yes,some of their numbers are a bit low(er) than expected or previously reported for Deneb. And yes,Kenstfield is beating Yorkfield and Nehalem in number of those tests from hwbox.gr so you can draw you own conclusions from that.

for starters you can't even say it has an ipc of 6% because most of the tests didn't matter. the 5 everest tests didn't matter, the 4 sandras didn't matter, wprime is useless. while i admit most of their benchmarks are correct many of them don't matter and won't show any real performance. its not that the site isn't reputable its just the fact that i have never heard of them until now and we know what to expect from sites we are used to because we are used to their testing methods, benchmarks, etc. plus it won't matter how reputable the site is you need more than one review to make a conclusion.Quote:

Although I appreciate all the work OverClocker_gr @ HWBOX and the Greek guys have done I get the feeling that they don't really know how to tweak the PhII to make it shine. Honestly, even Overclocker_gr's reviews show the chip to be quite competitve... :yepp:
We need more reviews and benchmarks. Different mobos and ram will surely yeild different results, some may be better and some may be worse. As the info rolls in though, PII is looking really great for any overclocking enthusiast:up:Quote:
