Project: Raistlin

hi xs. i've been a silent admirer and pupil of the great builds from this forum. i registered for quite sometime but only got activated yesterday. :) so finally, i can post and share with you my first attempt at water cooling. most of the techniques i learned from the other worklogs here, so please pardon me if it seems that i have copied them off you, i will give credit to whom credit is due. :)

all comments/advice are welcome. looking forward to your expertise in my rookie attempt.

just a short intro...

i assembled my 'new generation' pc several months ago but it was such a rushed and sloppy job, that i never really got to document it and have a proper worklog. it was mainly to have my own pc and not abuse the laptop that i got from work. hehe. the rig evolved to what it is currently after being poisoned continuously (haha)... but kidding aside, i wanted a workhorse of a computer for internet, video, gaming, music and folding.

why name the rig, raistlin? naming the rig i guess is as important as the project itself. so i had to have some awesome name... when i was younger, i used to read dragonlance novels. raistlin, is a character in those series. he is a wizard that started out sickly and weak but eventually became powerful. not that i aim to have the most powerful rig, but rather because he used to belong to the red and black orders of magi, which are the basic colors that i want to use for rig. hopefully, the system would be fitting to the antihero that it derives its name.

what's up with those hardware? i have to admit, i'm not an overclocker nor a hardcore hardware nut. when i initially thought about assembling my own pc, i only wanted to use it for basic purposes as mentioned earlier. however, when i found out about folding@home, i became more interested in upgrading and making the pc better for that purpose. and since folding seemed more efficient using the gpu client, i thought it was better to have multiple gpus rather than multiple cpus (which was either having a skulltrail or multiple pcs running at the same time); that should explain the numerous gtxs in my system.

why go watercooling? having a minimally overclocked cpu and 3 gpus running can turn my case into a mini oven in a few minutes. haha. with fans blowing at my right, i think i am slowly losing my hearing. my main aim is to keep my hearing and the right side of my body from being cooked.

wtf folding!? i found out about folding@home when i was reading magazines regarding pcs when i was researching on building my pc and eventually caught on when i joined vrzone, since i am based in singapore this was the local forum with the best information about getting pc stuff locally. i guess folding eases the guilt on buying so much hardware and using up electricity (haha)... in exchange for contributing to the research on protein folding which i hope would help in finding cure for diseases. after my dad lost a brave battle against cancer last july 2008, i am more determined to do what i can to help fight this dreaded disease.

first time i saw them... i knew i had to have them!

ViperJohn ViperCheck Flow Indicator (too bad the third hole cannot accomodate a bitspower temp sensor. the temp probe is too long, it would hit the fins and stop it from spinning.) yes, there are cracks on the faceplate, but ViperJohn is so generous he's sending a replacement foc (eventhough that unit was from pts).

btw, the ek d5 top doesn't fit on an un-modded undesign 3g universal pump bracket. i found out late when my orders for the mounts came in. the hazards of online shopping and laziness in research. haha.

You have put alot of effort to this?Any ideas if you copy the idea where the gtx waterblock was placed inside stockcooler around it?Cant remember what thread was it but it did look supercool when it look almost default gtx but two fittings popped out middle of nowhere.

hi N3it1, i saw that implemented twice here in the forum, but i don't think i'll be going down that road. i think i've had enough of seeing the stock cover. haha. as for the cost, well... hopefully after this project, i wouldn't be upgrading for the next 3 years? if i don't get tempted with new tech. :p: i will definitely have more pics!... as long as no one objects to a thread flooded with pics. :D

hi skinnee. honestly, i have no idea. :confused: i'm thinking the 2 acrylic ones are rev.2 while the acetal top is rev.3. just because i got the 2 sooner (2 months ago from pts) and the acetal later (late aug from swc). if you can let me know how to differentiate, i can check and let you know. /end of noob ramble...

Also, those EK D5 tops are sweet! I really liked using it in my build as it took up less room and allowed for compression fitting...good stuff.

Lastly your "B" made out of compression fittings cracks me up! Talk about free advertising! I've been really pleased with compression fitting and elbows from them though...good stuff....

i usually take a picture of the pins before i take them out of the molex. then i'd just view them again to make sure i put it back correctly.

yeah, that's the main reason why i got the ek d5 top... to put compression fittings on them. but i can only use comp fitting on the intake.good enough though. :D

haha. touche! unfortunately, noob jitters - i didn't want to ruin the un design bracket nor the ek d5 top. so i just went another way instead in mounting the pumps.
for the sleeves, i used the techflex from ppc. i only got to know about the mdpc stuff after i have the techflexes with me. for the sata cables, i used the 3/8" sleeves and the 18mm heatshrinks (only because i didn't get the plugs off... :P)

Damn nice sleeving job, looks amazing.

hi Detale! those are uv ace fans i got from ppc. i have to warn you though, at full rpm these guys are loud! but with undervolting/fan controller you can find the sweet spot for noise-perf ratio.

haha. i will never look at the tube cutter the same way again. :D

all the sleeves i got from ppc. they're the techflex pet brand.
1/8" for the single wires (ie atx cables, pcie cables)
1/4" for the fan wires (or anything that's too fat to fit in the 1/8")
3/8" for the sata cables
