So Ive taken the plunge, I have a 6400X2 @3.52 right now and Ive been wanting to go Phenom for a while. Once I heard the 9950 was coming out and would be the same price as the 9850 was I figured wth, its time.
Im on MSI K9a2 Platinum V1, 4x1gig pc6400 and HD2900XT. My cpu cooler is Thermalright SI-128 SE which keeps my current cpu @ 22-26c@ 1.47v
Next upgrade will be 2x2gig G-skill and then 4870X2 when its released.
phenom should be here by wednesday or thursday......cant wait!

I have a few tips for you if your interested, since I'm running a similar setup.
1) Coming from the X2 it's easy to go crazy with voltages on Phenoms... Just be aware that it's not always the best option, and many times you'll get better/more stable results at lower v's. Phenoms seem to be more sensitive to electro-migration.
2) The v1.5 bios for the K9A2 is the best release version so far for Phenom, even though it doesn't have a NB Multi option it's pretty easy to OC the HT Ref clock to 210~220 (2100~2200 IMC) which has been pretty close to the stability limit on all 3 of my Phenoms.
3) My best chip (9850) is actually only truely stable @ 2.835 Ghz. Hopefully the 9950 will be better, but if your looking for true stability don't get sucked into all the 3.5 stuff you see some people posting...

Ive already seen one 9950@3.6ghz with the stock cooler for max OC and 3.3ghz stable...I was ready to order a 9850BE in the NEXT WEEK ,,So now i guess ill be ordering a 9950BE because of the newer batches...the silicon is improving),,Like a nice wine we shall see with time....:D

3.1Ghz om the Nv based mobo and with that Vcore is a great result.

Yeah, I really think this is the case. If you look at all the reviews so far, they AFAIK all managed to get it above 3Ghz without problems. And this was all done on SB600 boards as well. So Im really curious what the SB750 might add to this.Quote:

If you're a gamer you would really benefit from a HD 4870 GPU upgrade. I have a lowly Opteron 185@2.88Ghz and installed a Diamond 4870 yesterday to replace my 2900XT. It is 2x faster in all my games with AA and AF cranked. Without AA and AF its over 2x faster than my old 2900XT. Since you have a 3.5Ghz X2, you'll see your biggest gains from a GPU upgrade. It will definitely tide you over until you can get your hands on an SB750 mobo.

In addition to your post,it seems that AMD has gone the route of lowering certain voltage levels(I/O related?) when it comes to SB750.I'm sure you have seen the slide before here (1.8V/3.3V level shifter circuit,needed for direct connection of Phenom and SB pins).Hopefully,the integrated clock generator in SB750 will eliminate the idle freezing problems and bring overall better clocks.

Newegg link is just wrong..Look at AMD's product page for 9950 and look at numerous reviews for the same chip.All show 2Ghz for NB/HT,just like the 9850.

But atm it's pretty confusing that like some motherboards people had loads of problems with that a few dont have any problems and seem to OC their Phenoms like hell on it. So yeah, it's getting more some sort of a lottery now. But with SB750 boards you should be pretty safe.
But just try it out first on your current board. If you dont have problems at all it's already cool.
I would suggest Windows XP 32 bit Phenom requires much more voltage and not so great stability wise OC in 64 bit OS from my experience :(

I've got a clock interrupt one, non executable memory, & a paging file error. some how it could get access to it.

1.45v didnt help either , fresh xp install that is . BUT , 3 gigz and 1.35V boots fine into safe mode....and it is stable. Now that needs some research

My 9950 OC's a little worst then my 9850. I just don't need a worse Phenom, so I sent it back!
This was my suicide run with my 9850. The 9950 will only do 14x230. Any more and it freezes or reboots.

Besides that, how often does it get to be posted to wait for the SB750 before judging the OC-abilities of any Phenom CPU? Ive one of the very bad examples, as I said before, my CPU even freezes at 2.6Ghz after many hours, it freezes at 2.9Ghz just as I press enter on the windows log on screen. But it does 2.8Ghz prime stable for 16h+ however it still suffers from idle freezing. Beyond 2.8Ghz there's no red line to be followed anymore, no matter what Vcore I use, there's no scaling at all.
And although it might sound a bit ignorant, this is like impossible. Therefor Im sitting already over a month here with everything at stock waiting for the SB750 to give it another try. Im not expecting at all Im actually sitting on a WR clocking chip, but I do believe it will do 3Ghz at least, as any Phenom should be able to.
I have a couple of questions
right now on my 6400X2 Im running 280 bus speed x 12.5 multi, ht link is 1400 and cpu is 3.5ghz
will I be able to run the bus speed high?? or will I have to go much lower and oc through the multi??
The plan is to oc the multi first to see how high it goes then start messing with the bus.... what should I expect to see though??

Phenoms run HT speeds much higher than Athlon X2s since they use the newer HT standard(HT3.0).So on default,without any OC,your Phenom will run the HT higher than your Athlon X2 chip @OCed speed.Phenom will run @2Ghz or if you like 4Ghz- in double data rate numbers.
You're better of with OCing through the multi first and see how far it can go.After that you can use HTT OCing to fine tune the memory speed.
As for 45nm question,yes ,45nm Phenoms are fully pin compatible with present AM2+ standard and will run on DDr2 motherboards,even maybe on plain "old" AM2 boards.Additionally,45nm Phenoms will have DDR3 controller support too,so you can buy a second AM3 motherboard in Q1 2009 ,along with the DDR3 memory and run your new 45nm chip with DDR3 memory :).
I'm going to have to disagree with you there, soundood. Your explanation sounds more like a rationalization than an honest opinion. Regardless though, it isn't right to feel cheated because one processor doesn't overclock higher than the previous model. What AMD sells you is a CPU which is promised to run at a specific frequency at a specific voltage while at specific temperatures consuming no more than a specified amount of power. You would be improper to demand any 9950 to overclock higher than any 9850. So long as it performs at the speed it was sold to you, they've held their end of the bargain. This does not relieve you of your moral responsibility to live with your purchase decision. This is similar to people who RMA video cards because they fail to meet their overclocking goals.
Overclocking is as gambling is. It's just unfortunate that stores don't or can't enforce responsibility like a casino does. Try going to the pit after losing a thousand dollars playing poker and demand your money back because the game failed to be as profitable as you expected. They'll look at you like you're either mentally insane or you just told a joke.
The 140w TDP should be a clear indication that these chips will rum HOTTER the the 125w TDP 9850 BE because the heat difference at Idle & Load going from the Phenom 9600BE to the 9850BE was incredible and more then quite obvious. Personally I would not invest in a higher TDP chip from 65nm Phenom the heat output is not worth it at all:yepp:
Brother,according to Anand's and LostCircuits' review of 9950BE,the chip actually draws less power than 9850,both @idle and load!Like Rammsteiner noted before,the 140W mark is just n overrated number for ACC compatibility(and the fact that some biased reviewer will cry faul when he puts this chip in SB750 mobo and measure the actual power draw near 140W,due to possible higher clock of the chip in that case).
so maybe i missed something, what is the differance between a 9850BE and a 9950? apart from 100 mhz/140w TDP rating/and of course the rebranding?
why are they priced the exact same as a 9850BE?

Both poker and overclocking are essentially gambling--they're games of chance and luck. There are no promises provided and none can be expected if one is thinking properly. You just get what's on the label. In this case, a 9850 is a chip that is supposed to run at 2.5GHz. A 9950 is a chip that is supposed to run at 2.6GHz. Expected overclocking targets has absolutely NOTHING to do with how these chips are marketed and sold. They're priced the same because they simply cant ask more. If they would ask more people would either buy a lower rated Phenom or would step over to Intel. Also, just like the older FX CPU's, a new Phenom BE comes in, the other one goes out and will be replaced with a normal 9850. Also, the price of the 9850 will drop sometime soon to encourage non-OC'ers to buy a 9850.
Whether they're cherry picked or not, why should we care? It only means we get the good stuff. Although I dont think they're cherry picked. At most they're selected to run at 3Ghz (Phenom 9950BE + SB750 board = 3Ghz). But nothing more. I would actually expect the Phenom 9x50e's to be the not so good clockers, or even the Phenom X3's.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: There's another guy somewhere that I read about regarding 9950 power consumption. He measured his system to pull more power with the 9950 than the 9850 even when downclocked and set to the same voltage. I find that interesting. It was a difference of like 15W. It seems to contradict the results of the 9950 drawing less.

This is a Black edition with unlocked multis, this in itself should tell you that this chip is for overclocking and not just for its rated 2.6ghz. Now if it was a normal edition with locked multis Id say yea it shouldnt overclock and it should just do what the company claims, Black editionds are marketed as overclocking chips for enthusiasts. If not then why the unlocked multi?

TLB errata, what's wrong with that? It caused a performance drop, but at least they released a fix to solve the problem, if anyone would have problems with TLB in the first place. They even gave the option ot either shut it off or not, what else do you want.
Misguided specs from motherboard manufacturers? What specs? The few 780G motherboards which said it would support Phenom but in the end it didnt? How can you blaim AMD for that? If something's really wrong here, I think that it's this part, but it's not AMD's fault.
I still dont understand your problem with the release of a 9950BE. How could you think it would do like way better? They keep it even at the same price as the 9850BE untill they phase out the 9850BE and sell a regular 9850.
The only marketing part here is that they make 9850 regular and drop it a bit in price to be more competitive. The 9950BE just replaces the 9850BE and it's just the same price, the same core. Only chance you've is that the overal production process increased and we might see more better clocks instead of a few better clocks as with the 9850BE.
There's no utopia and there will be always something wrong, you can resist to everything or just simply accept it;)
Besides that, you seem to forget everytime that combined with a SB750 the 9950BE will run at 3Ghz, while the 9850BE will only do 2.9Ghz (if the 9850BE actually supports the SB750 features, see the last part of my post for this).
9x50BE's are enthusiast aimed, although at the price anyone could get it anyway. It has unlocked multi's to rule out any HTT problems in the first place. But still it sells as a 2.6Ghz CPU, and not as a 'clocks better than 9850BE' CPU.Quote:

The reviewer did very good measurement. To me it looks like some of the 9950 are 125W and some 140W TDP.
My own comparison results look odd. I had not mounted thw D-Tec very good so my temps are ~8°C lower now, that might make a few Watts difference, i'll measure againe once i finished 3GHz stability testing.
Neither the 9850 or 9950 that you're complaining about are B2 chips, so it's irrelevant. As such, there is no TLB problem. Also, some motherboards not living up to their marketing is not AMD's problem. It's unrelated to the processor itself.Quote:

The 15W difference I mentioned a page ago was for a guy who had clocked a 9950 down to 2500MHz and ran it at 1.3V. It still pulled more power somehow. I wonder if their CPU tweak was set different for them.
If it indeed uses more power it is because drive strength has increased. If new (SB750) motherboards take advantage of this you can expect better clocking with the 9950 than with the 9850. If new motherboards can change drive strength on the fly to every desired level with all Phenoms then the difference between the 9850 and 9950 will be small.
To some: if I don't make sense to you then you shouldn't be complaining about the fact that your new 9950 isn't better than your 9850 now.

Until we start seeing DX11 engines, a quad will probably not see a lot of improvement for you, considering the clock difference. DX11 though will introduce threaded rendering at the API level, so I imagine things are going to really start moving sideways like we need (parallelism) when that occurs.
its all good........well the thing is like people have pointed out there must be some change in the cpu for that difference in voltage and we are trying to figure it out. I dont mind getting this cpu to try out. I still want the upgrade. But I can tell you this, if this cpu doesnt feel any faster than what I already have It will go back to the place I purchased it from. trust me you will see a difference in windows when i went from my 5000BE to this quad even at stock everything seemed to run faster and clock for clock @2.8ghz my SP with slower ram is the same as it was on my 5000BE @3.35ghz with the ram running alot faster with the same timingsQuote:

My first K9A2's mosfet cooling was dismal. Only one row actually made contact with the crooked heatpipe assembly. On all K9A2s, you will also note one transistor that isn't even covered by the heatsink at all. Two rows also only make half contact with the heat pad on the heatsink. Cooling on the K9A2 is pretty poor.

let me list what Ive done so far...
Overclocked to 2.8 stock voltages and ran superp 4m,3dm06 http://service.futuremark.com/result...&resultType=14 (400 point increase at 800mhz lower cpu speed), and a very quick 15 minutes of orthos, which it completed.
So I bumped it up to 2.9ghz stock voltages...ran 3dm06 http://service.futuremark.com/result...&resultType=14, super pi 4m and crysis demo benchmark.

AMD overdrive is showing about 3ghz as the memory seems to be running at 207 or something even though I havent touched it.
