I will be checking this early morning to see if anything changed
Grrr
the rush to market is telling...
The review is up
Memory overclocks way higher, which is fantastic.
Not really too much of a difference from the gt at 1280x1024 resolution.
There should be a crysis benchmark! Overall seems nice, but not sure if it's worth $100 to ugrade from a gt to this.
jesus christ, the 8800gts in lost planet at 1920x1200 is faster than the hd3870 at 1280x1024.
Interesting, it seem to do best at 1600x1200 and inconsistent at 1920 and 1280.
On average it will be a few frames better then GT at $50-$100 higher then the current GTs.
I would like to know why Fear wasn't benched at 1920?
World in Conflict and Fear shows the GTS having lower then average minimal frame rates compared to the GT (however, left out 1920 which is very important here). More minimal frame rates benchmarks are needed to confirm a trend if the GT or GTS offers the highest minimal frame rates.
yeah, and don't forget it wasn't clock for clock. the GTS is clocked higher out of the box then the GT.. so the GT might have the potential to equal it when OCd, for a lot less then the GTS will go for since everyone is price gouging GT's. the again, it's only 1 review.
(at least my GT was cheap, i jumped on ordered it the first day of release :p:)
Looking at:
-minimal frame rates using Fear and WiC
-clock rate
-cost between the GT and GTS
-power consumption (tailing the 2900)
I have to agree, the GT is looks like the best bet. We need more benchmarks to confirm the minimal frame rate though. Those results at that clock rate bothers me.
That review makes me feel snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug about my 8800GT purchases now. :D
Pretty happy i've ordered a GT afterall. Ripper of a card.
if u havent purchased a 8800gt though, this new card is the way to go. (since there is no gt stock)
I have to ask...did they allocate GT dies to make GTS (at GTS prices)?
they must have rushed the 8800gt to combat AMD 3800 series, knowing they would only allocate a small batch to the market.
they are probably focusing on this card(gts) now for bigger batches. its hard to say thoough because the single slot gt is a good all around card and hopefully they are re-stocking.
on the otherhand the same thing could happen with the gts as is happening with the gt.... sell out in five minutes.
I don't quite "get" that screenshot.. Older version of CPU-Z that reads/lists the processor and stepping wrong? The 3D06 result doesnt show the CPU/GPU used?
If more reviews show similar results I don't see people flocking to buy this card at $50-$100 more IMO. I believe that some (if not all) looking for an 8800 will prefer the GT. But I'm speculating here anything is possible. What will be interesting to learn is how well the yields are from the waffer. This tells the real story of how many we will see available and how they will be priced :yepp:
true.
more people will want the single slot design, plus it draws less power.
once more oc results come out i bet this will be the best (new) card for playing crysis
LOads of GT's in stock here :) (UK) but they're not cheap :(
the 65nm tech is nice, but its just a big yawn till nv puts something with substance out next year. I dont see the point in spending the money on this or the GT for a 5-10% gain
Now the big question; HD3870 Crossfire, 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB, including overclocked performance and price-performance-ratio?
To be honoust, I'm leaning towards the 8800GTS 512MB, because of the bigger cooler (better overclocking). Furthermore, because you're not dependant on the support for Crossfire in games.
But an ACS3 version that costs about $250-260 could make me go 8800GT.
Now we know where all those G92 cores went when people are STILL waiting for their 8800GT cards.
Power consumption is also a HUGE disappointment.
only + 5% then 8800GT :(
I hope drivers problems
regards
Or flawed review. Say how can a 8800GT perform better in some scenarios when 8800GTS has everything 8800GT and more? Sorry but I don't trust TweakTown on this one. :p:
But yea if this is the real deal it's sure a bit dissappointing. But I'm not gonna make a conclusion based on this review cuz with those specs it just should perform a bit better. I wanna see more reviews before I'm gonna jump to any conclusions. But yea could be bandwidth limiting and if that's the case I'm sure gonna pick a 8800GT instead.
The new GTS is consistantly outperforming the GT @ high res.
Granted for those of you who use smaller res the GT is the way to go but I'm willing to pay an extra $50-100 for that boost.
Besides they didn't have time to bench games with the card OC'd and the drivers aren't mature.
This card has a niche and I'm in it while I wait for the next flagship models...
I too shall wait for more benchmarks/reviews before drawing a firm conclusion
We need a GTX comparision ...
Bit disappointed by performance. And if the price will be 40$ more than GT, then GT is a winner here.
Bottom Line:
People will take from these benchmarks what they want to see.
One person sees an underperforming 3870 and feels better about
his 8800GT purchase, easing his mind of the lingering buyer's remorse
he may have been feeling...
Fanboys for either camp will cherry pick results and argue for "their side."
Me? I had been convinced the 8800GT was the way to go, and had one
on order the day they appeared. But what I see from these benchmarks is
a 3870 card that was built for an integrated system, and will only reach
its true potential when run in such a system.
I've never been a company fanboy. I jumped on AMD's bullet-train when
the A64 line appeared, and it clearly went on to dominate. When Intel
finally found a solution in the Core 2 Duo, I knew who the new reigning
champ was. But now? Benchmarks be damned. My gut says we are just
witnessing the birth of AMD's new vision, and birth is always a painful
affair. AMD bashers-- have your fun... for a month or two.
I for one am giving AMD a chance on this one. I don't feel an emotional
need to justify my Intel purchases by downplaying the obvious advances
AMD is just now starting to make.
Give me a revised/updated Phenom, my dual HD 3870s, and my tricked-out
MSI 790FX board... I think you may be surprised at the results of a properly
configured Spider rig come Q1 2008 ;)
For now, have your fun :D
EBL
I would be more inclined to get 3870 and get a second, later if needed.
If the price is right that is.
Not bad... Then again wasn't expecting a huge performance increase form the added shaders. Guess I'll be more intrested in keeping my GT and just modding it and adding better cooling.
precisely what I am doing. My first 3870 is already here waiting for
my MSI 790FX board to arrive. Update BIOS, some overclocking fun,
and I fully expect the pairing of these two components to yield
better results. When the inevitable price break on the 3870 shows up,
I snap it up, and voila -- dual PCIe X16 Crossfire fun ensues...
EBL
maybe thats why its called a GTS.
Exactly why I ordered the HD3870. Company Loyalty is silly. I wanted the 8800GT and still think it is better than the 3870 overall. $237 shipped (list $214) convinced me to buy a 3870 though. There's no need to try and put down either of these cards. One's slightly slower and Cheaper. The other is just the opposite and harder to come by. I'm still kicking myself for not ordering the 8800GT for $239 shipped.
My 3870 is my 2nd choice but looks to be a good purchase as well. Picking a Video Card was a much harder than picking a Processor. It was Easy to pick a 3500+ over a Hotscott, then easy to pick Conroe over X2 and even easier Penryn over Phenom. Also Intel Chipset over nVidia's which leads me back to 3870 that I will add another to later for Crossfire maybe next year. I don't like the adversarial stance nVidia is taking with Intel + SLI! In this case, I'm glad AMD is NOT that stupid!
... After that, retailers are going to hit a dry spell for the simple fact that if you could hold off from purchasing a graphics card just before Christmas [or] you can hold off until we see the new NVIDIA based DX10 cards come in January.
What DX10 cards is he talking about here?
I wouldn't base my opinion off this one review. I'm on the fence between the GT and the GTS its going to depend on how well the GTS does at 1920x1200.
They did add some benchmarks of Crysis now also on the last page.
For example. I game at 1920 x 1200 and I have a gt. The gts would be a step up but not enough to make it worth my while. If there is a 1gb version of either card, that might be the gtx killer. Certainly not this card and not worht my time or upgrade from a gt. IMO
This isn't unlike the 7900 to 7950 jump last generation.
Why? Because the rig I built will suddenly stop performing?
This is why fanboism is self-defeating. It colors one's ability to reason.
If Something comes along from a different manufacturer that significantly
outperforms my current hardware on a price/performance basis, and does
so to such a great degree that it renders my current hardware incapable
of running the applications I need to run at a high level, I simply buy the
better offering.
Intel has had my wallet for the past eighteen months. I've taken an objective
look at AMD's current roadmap for an integrated desktop solution,
and in taking a larger view of where the market is heading near-term,
have concluded it will indeed provide a high level of performance and
better flexibility. When that changes, I will adapt and change with it.
But focusing on largely irrelevant (and often highly suspect) "benchmark"
reviews, while stubbornly clinging to a myopic view based on one's current
love affair with their platform of choice, is an efficient way to separate a
fool from his wallet.
As far as I can tell, blind allegiance to a particular manufacturer serves only
to ease one's psychological pain when that nagging feeling of "did I make the
right choice?" begins to rear its ugly head. You aren't defending Intel. Why
would you? You're defending your own decision making. Change can be good.
My post stands.
EBL
mhhh too bad the improvement isn't better than 5-10%
maybe I'm going to buy a GT then, when available
Something's iffy about those power consumption numbers. How can the GTS use almost as much as the 2900XT with only one 6-pin connector?
If those numbers are true the G92 is a bummer from a technology POV: Can't beat a 8800 Ultra and sucks as much power as its 90nm sibling. Disappointing...
i wont be rushing out to get one.
good performance if the price is right.
Posting this from my 3.5 year old AMD rig and at the time when I built it, AMD was offering the best hardware for what I wanted to do.
Q1 2008 I am looking to build a new machine; which processor company do you think I am going to go with?
Like you said, people will say anything to convince themselves that they made the right purchase, including calling someone else a fan boy I guess. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...5&postcount=36
What would be really nice is if they release a gtx/ultra variant of the card. It would have gddr4 512bit memory and a much faster core and more shaders. Then they could actually make the ultra a unique card. Toss a 8800gx2 in there as well.
Depending on price I will get the 1Gb variant. Have a $350 stepup I can use with EVGA and am hoping the 1Gb variant runs at $400 or less so at most I cough up $50.
That will cost $400+? :D
It's the price/performance ratio that's so interesting about G92. My budget range I wanna spend on a gfx card is 200~300 EUR currently. So these cards are really attractive. 9800GTS and GTX (let's say it will be named that will prolly be like $400 and $550 for GTX so I'll pass and then it takes like a a half year+ from now on b4 perhaps sth in the 250~300 EUR range appears perhaps and I simply don't wanna use this 7900GTO for that long, in fact it's bothering me that I didn't get a 8800GT from start now. I'm sure I'm not alone thinking the same. Sure 9800GTX will probably perform like double the performance of 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB but cost like twice as much too.
i thought it was "d8e" dual pcb and "d9e" next generation.
anyway new g92 gts is another niche filled.
I am a little skeptical about the review.
Not because I don't trust TweakTown, but because I was expecting a killer card.
Just my expectations.
Now, I need to go dig in the million and one HD3870 vs 8800GT threads.
looks awesome!
my guy from compusa is holding me 2 out of the 4 gt's that came in tonight should I buy all 4 tom morning?
This is for a second system and wanted to run them in sli/there 250 a pop and are soo tempting to get.I game on a 1080p display so the gts is even more tempting.
ahh what should I do?
So whens the 1gb version due out?
Yeh I know what some of you are thinking, I'm very hard to please
I hate how they don't include the 640MB GTS in the 8800GTS G92 review! G*dam*it to hell! And only one gaming benchmark with a GTX and Ultra? Are you kidding me?
What I am eagerly waiting for or at least what I would try to do myself, is to throw this under water and find out how far it can be pushed.
Who the heck really cares about it's stock performance.. I'm more curious to see that tweaktown broke 2100mhz memory with this card, because I haven't heard of one gt going over 2050 and being stable.
Throw this under water and maybe it can hit 2200+
The best xtremeforum comparison would be the avg gt card overclocked under water vs the avg gts card overclocked under water. This is way there real comparison is, otherwise it's hard to compare a gt that has a lower stock core to a gts that is clocked higher. Find me the max clocks and then we can talk ;)
Also, why is there this huge 25% jump in directx10 (cave demo and call of juarez min frames) but around 5% in other directx9.
Guys, check out the review again, they added crysis and the GTS 320
no ultra beater?dissapointing
My overclocked 8800GT easily beats those benchmarks, atleast in XP. What is going on? It seams like those additional 16 stream processors aren't being used. Driver problem?
I could not take it any more.I went to compusa today and picked up 2 8800gt's bfg oc editions for 249 each. The gts will be better but they will cost more and I couldnt wait any longer.
these in sli is the best bang for the buck right now, hopefully they run well.
Stream Processors: 96
You'd be suprised how tech savy guys can be sometimes behind online stores, for some it's just a business, no interest in the hardware. Alternatively tired of all the numbers. I've never had much faith about products specs on hardware sites, I expect to see a few errors now and then.
We should not blame resellers for it and yes Nvidia for confusing them with this naming convention, for resellers 8800GTS = 8800GTS. We only have to make sure we are getting the right inside core. The 8800 GT is quite understandable because we do not have another 8800GT but 8800GTS no, that should have been named 8800GTSS.
I do not believe that this card is actually slow or much faster than the GT, this overpriced card will die before it comes as the D9E will come soon. There is really no point on buying this card. The GT version on the other side is overpriced as it can not meet demand, even weak brands are selling GT cards like hot cakes. The only company I would go for would be EVGA for its lifetime warranty and the step up 3 months program. I'm not sure but this review shows me that the drivers are limiting it to run at full potential. I would wait for a general viewpoint before take my conclusions up about this card. I would rather buy 2 x 256MB GT than 1 x GTS or 2 x 3850, Crossfire scales better but sometimes it does not work as we expect, SLI not that better but it works. I prefer reliability than the rest.
Metroid.
tweaktown updated the review with crysis and compared it to a gtx and ultra.

the 8800gts 320mb score looks strange?
I dont really trust those results?
Me neither as I said earlier, there's no way a G92 8800GTS can loose to a 8800GT in ANY test at ANY settings as this card has everything 8800GT has and more, so I'm definitely not buying TweakTown's review as a preview of 8800GTS 512MB performance, this is more like a bully review towards NVIDIA. :p:
If I got such results I wouldn't even publish the results. Just gives site bad image and if I remember right it's not the first time a TweakTown review has been questioned.
Think il do what i always do wait for some xs guys to get there hands on the card and show us what it can do in a proper rig.
Think il go for the 8800GT tho will be a nice budget step up from my 7900GTO.
they don't seem high enough. I just thought of a way we can test this out. Let's just have someone clock their 8800gt to the same specs as the gts (gpu/shader/mem clocks) and compare them to their 8800gt at the refrence clocks. If the difference seems about the same as that of the tweaktown's review, I say it'll be safe to say that tweaktown has an 8800gt in disguise/faked the results. If the results are a bit lower than tt's gts, then we can say they're probably legit.
I have a feeling they may have received a card but just had a gt under the hood, if you recall expreview got on of those cards with the gts cooler but simply had a gt underneath. Because if they didn't have a card, nvidia would probably have had tt take down the review by now

now that looks legit, lets see how it performs in their review
Good to see it doesn't carry the GTX and Ultra length. Otherwise I would have to cut some metal out of my Antec Solo case to make it fit.
lets see under the hood!!
I like the stylish GeForce logo on the side :)
i wonder why power consumption is so high and the card still so hot:mad:
Maybe you need triple slot stock cooler :p: :D

From mascaras pictures, it looks like it has the same mounting as the GTX, and it has an IHS.
Please can someone confirm?
Thanks!

Interesting....
teh big question... how much does this thing cost? If its around $100 from the GT, I rather go for the GT. :D
I can tell you its dependent on what you're doing. Personally going from a 8800gts/320 -> 8800gt OC on a 1680x1050 display makes a big difference to me. The games I play are a lot smoother like COD4, I'm actually playing better because the FPS isn't so bad. This card OC's like a beast though.

According to those scores it looks like it will be in between the GTX and Ultra. Not great but not bad by any means. Depending on final price (North America) it might be a pretty good buy.
