Tek9 3.0 LN2/DI GPU unit

I will be adding more pics/results to the thread... some of you guys have been waiting long time so here are 2 of the dual spaced Teks to start...there are two revisions of the unit, this one and another for single spaced X38 setups and a new soon to be released graphics technology by "a leading graphics company" :D. Both units will come with the same HW pack for a few different mounting styles for both NVIDIA and ATI cards. In designing this unit, I tackled some issues I had with my previous revs that needed refining such as limited internal volume with both DI and LN2 and size limitations with todays platforms. This new base design is very effective in "controlling" swing and is tuned for slow swing at high loads, making it easier to run 3 units ;)

Alot of considerations went into the mounting for both NV and ATI and the heavy duty ALU bracket has quite a bit of machinework done to it to allow this. More detailed pics of mounting and setup pics to come as well as pics of the base.

I thought this might be the next evolution. It never made sense to me why people made their pots in shhape they do.

Now for some 8800 Ultra mounting and SLI setup pics. Now you can see the scale of the unit a little better.

First way is too mount through the back of the plate with screws threading through the plate and using low profile thumb nuts and conical compressions springs for a lighting quick assembly/disassemly this works great on 680i's triple spacing:

Now for dual spaced mobos to allow for more insulation between 1st and 2nd cards, you reverse the screws and come in through the back of the card. The mounting screw heads dont really stick up any farther than most components on the card, leaving plenty of room.

Thank you. Yes it makes it alot more comfortable with both DI and LN2.
Some examples of that are when ULTRA cores are at 1000mhz/1.65v for nature in 01 for instance when the previous tek9 containers are pulled down to load temps, the old units required to be filled maybe 2-3 times during game test, but thats how they were designed. They worked the best when nearly filled to the top due to the massive front wall I used on them. That is where the majority of the "pull down" force came from. You really had to use the whole shaft of the unit for your best heat exchange at high load because of size limitations front to back and every square inch of the unit or "potential unit space". Thats why I left it so square and blocky and didnt want to wreck the unit by putting fancy corners on it.
A cool thing with those old units was that the internal volume was so small and max ammount of LN2 they could take was so limited, that it was nearly impossible to overpour them when benching. Never took long for the container to boil off a full pour under load, so with the right timing and knowing the units/HW well, you could run the cards at nearly any temp/any load and still holding within a few degrees going from extreme load to no load.

Now these units are different than old in terms of timing of pours with Ln2. It took some getting used to as I know the old ones so well, but now when I go back to the old ones after using these it's crystal clear. Where the old units needed maybe three hammerings during nature at 1000mhz core, this one might need only big one at beginning and it will hold well througout the test...still pulling down, but at a much slower rate. I ran an ultra last week for full 06's on one of the new ones at close to 1000mhz/1.62v using no colder than -80c on the unit.

That was really the main thing I think with previous units is that the space was so limited the cards they did good with LN2, but the DI performance was lacking and a GPU unit needs to be able to do both, more so than cpu unit. You have to have the ability to run DI really good on gpu's as it is so nice to leave the cards on DI if the unit is awsome DI unit it can do alot of damage using DI.

Using foam shims. They would wobble if I wasnt using them for sure.
Speaking of the shims/pads, I use them when I insulate the unit. Solarfall mentioned insulating a few posts back and it couldnt be easier with this unit using a foam wrap :D. I'll get to that soon.

More pics, this time ATI/X-FIRE stuff for dual spacing. Same deal mounting as ultra, just use inside holes on bracket for perfect fit and there are two mounting options here as well. Though the thumbnuts will fit between the cards, the thru back of card way makes Xfire mounting much more easy and allows for plenty insulation:

I'll show internals soon. I have no idea about the "whirl effect" as I have never seen that happen with my pots ever, but think I know where you got that from :D.
When I hear the term whirl effect, I think of the scene in Dragons Lair where dirk is paddling through the purple/green rapids lol.

Got 1030mhz stable 1.59v/-85c on a new EVGA ultra. Container can hold within a degree or two through Nature at these clocks if I get THE pour just right at beginning. It's also gt2/gt5 stable 06 at these settings so pretty strong card at this voltage. Shader clock has more headroom too. Testing only card clocks on the unit:

Nice Vince. It reminds me of some of those pots done by the guys over in Asia back when we were all running DFI NF4 SLI-DR. They took a bunch of copper plates and made them into a rectangle brazed together for single spacing.

I was thinking of taking my current pots and just cutting them down the middle and putting a new back on them but your idea is so much better.

Old teks are really awsome units at removing heat. They have more mass to them then it looks from the outside and have low "thermal resistance". I wanted to slow down the swing some without losing any cooling capacity in addition to increasing the internal volume of the unit to make it better with DI which is something my old unit wasn't really optimal for. It's alot to tackle and expect to get the tuning just right off the bat for something completely new. I have already revised/tweaked the base on this one 4 times since the first one.

Really sweet looking especially the thermocouple (looks better then others I have seen :yepp: ). I have checked around here for the foam wrap in home depot and lowes, any suggestions where it might be found? Great idea on the baseplate with the notch just for the probe. :yepp:

I saw at the core side you angled the container? (yeah srry that i can't explain it better)
But if you used distances busses, that's how it called it here, you can ajust the mountingplate to the container, and make the coreside flatt, without being bothered from difficult mounting or not.
Perhaps you coudl gain some with this :D

Angled front wall for a few different reasons. I understand your concept though.

2900XT is rocking on the unit so far. No swirling yet 1200mhz+ dinos, but I am looking out for it :D.
Can run 3D 1200mhz all day long -71c/1.55v. The memory on my one living 2900 seems to be stuck around 1000mhz without a vmem mod and starts artifacting bad past 1G. Card was coldbugging on me at -85c. Took it up to 1.62v+, but initially can't seem to go colder then -84c or so. So easy to pour these cards on these units. I can leave the room and come back and the temps hold at 1200mhz through 05/06 lol.

Some test screens using E6600, CORSAIR DDR3 1800C7 DOMINATORS, Single ASUS 2900XT, and a few diff mobos....ASUS Blitz3, DFI P35, and ASUS P5K-3 DELUXE.
Going to buck the current craze and use some good old fashioned "current gen" hardware to push the card on the unit :D

This has been a great opportunity for me to get in some real nice DDR3 testing.
using my DOMINATOR 1800C7's. Cas6 performance so far is amazing @2.25v. Should be able to make a push for 900mhz cas6 3d stable with more volts.
Here the card is running strong at 1200/981 and was -71c loaded temps/approx 1.53v when bench was running. Very cpu bottle-necked on most of these runs, just focusing on pushing memory, FSB, and cards at those temps and volts.

This E6600 is pretty nice. Same chip nearly 600fsb on DFI P35 mobo giving it chilled water temps near 0c. Should do some nice FSB at -100c, though all I need is 590 as this chip seems good for around 53-5400mhz 3d I think.

Back to pushing the card some in 06 and nature 01. The clocks hold really well on this unit. Minimal swinging in between pours, holding temps very stable. 1238/999 1.54v/approx -82c is best so far, jsut wont go colder than -84c yet for me. Again, these runs really cpu bound with conroe at 3.6ghz as just pushing card clocks here on blitz3 using 140mhz pci-ex:

I went up to 1.65v max and the heat output didnt seemt to effect the unit at all, but no gains in clocks just some instability. Card can't run colder than -84c or so. If it could do closer to -100c, I think I could benefit from additional vcore. -84c is better than the piece of :banana::banana::banana::banana: x1900 I tried that couldnt even do below single stage/chiller temps.

last one i had did -96°C evap on cascade :) befor coldbug hits .
btw there is a way to evade coldbug again ;) , when getting my card's back il test some things and report them .

The tube/oval shape really surprised me when I first saw the pictures, I just never thought of doing it that way before. Poor cnc must be working hard to get that shape. Looking forward to see more results.

This wider design really rocks and is making benching my cards feel more like cpu units....massive ones :D. It's funny now when I go back to the old ones because they just dont have the internal volume that these have...not even close. These new units are the equivalent of two of the old ones side by side.
For the container to be really good to use with DI, this design works Xtremely well.

Speaking of DI and internal volume, my unit thrashed this 2900xt ES pretty good today on a nice slushy DI/acetone mix. I was able to get through Nature 01 solid at damn near 1238mhz on the core using 1.59v :up: This card is an early ES sample that seems to run really hot.
Nature 01 is IMO the hardest test you can run on a gpu. You want to test your card hard, just loop nature 3-4 times and you will get your answer.
Unit always pulled warmer during 01' nature than at anytime during full 05 or 06. Full 05's were'nt too tough at 1211mhz core. Again, this isn't LN2 this is DI + acetone :yepp: Unit could handle up to 1.6v and 1200mhz+ /-65c or so about 3/4 full though I only need to push near 1.6v for 1225mhz+
Difference in temps between idle at desktop with clocks/volts set and full load/volts that I saw was about 4c max at this OC. When pushing 1238mhz 1.6v through nature, I could make it about 3/4 way then it would lock so think that was the max for DI with this card.
Was really impressed with what it did and this is the reason behind the deisgn concept/base, and overall size. It was just really easy to use with DI and I could pack the unit with slush and just kick back and run full 05's...very nice.
Sitting at desktop taking screenshot unit maybe 3/4 full with 1.6v on the card, ATI tool temps were -42c to -44c:

Memory on this card is BRUTAL. Starts crapping out at 980mhz, so I bumped it down a little to focus on clocking the core with DI.

Here is a question I need some feedback on...
Would you guys rather have a gpu unit with a neutered footprint to allow for the ATI shim?? Or would you rather have a unit be the best it can be with ALL cards and pop the shim off to use with ATI cards??
Most that i have asked have said to leave the unit alone where it mates with the card, and that they will pop the shims off themsleves if the use them with the ATI's. They popped off so easy for me that I can't see why modifying the unit for the shim is necessary and I honestly never want to.
In fact on the run of these that we are doing now which should be done in about a week or so, I actually may increase the diameter of the button. It's really about what you guys who are getting the units want though ultimately.

Nah...no problem with bending at all. I crank the container bolts so tight till the card bends so much, thats how I know I have good contact :D
Besides, backplate would cause headaches with xfire mounting with a unit this size.

That's such crazy dry ice capability, being able to hold a load like that is amazing--couple hundred watts we're talking about e-z.

I have the first Tek-9s and I'm happy....They suck a lot of LN2 during bench coz of the high clocked VGA but it's OK with me ......and my VGA's of caurse......They STILL CAN handle the VGAs and even drive them to cold bug if I pour more LN2 in them during a bench.... :p:

SO I believe that with those beauties, a user will not have to be "focused" of the VGAs that much, when driving them to the edge..... ;) :D

Best performance for all cards - I would much rather have the best performance I can get and so what if I have to do some extra stuff before I bench with different cards. Performance is king in benching.

Couldn't have said it better than that with regards to LN2 performance. The old units can remove heat rapidly no matter the load. Never had any issues with those units ever in regards to getting proper cooling to the vga's with LN2.

These new units have a much different tune on them with LN2, they swing ALOT slower due to the new internal design. It was something to get used to at first because the old revs behaved quite differently.

Tuning on the new units really hold well. Not nearly the same ammount of pouring that the old ones need. MUCH easier to bench these units on LN2 making 3 unit benching by a single individual ALOT easier.
Can hold temp swings between pours less than one degree for full game tests pushing the cards very hard with 3.0 rev. The unit does all the work now and the user just have to make sure to have the right ammount of LN2 in the unit
for the load.

BTW--went back to LN2 last night on this 2900xt and was getting full 05's off at 1260mhz/1.63v, gonna push the cards voltage all the way today on LN2 to see how much it can take on the unit :).
