I suspect Q6600 OC'ing has been rare to date because they have been priced so close the the QX6700 that no one in their right mind would buy one.
With the price coming down shortly, we should see some more quad-core overclocking around here. :D
Here's what I've found for recent quad-core overclocking on 680i boards which is what I'm leaning towards. Although, with these less than stellar results, I'm inclined to rethink that.

ES is engineering sample (given out by Intel to testers, reviewers, etc.). B2/B3 are the silicon stepping or rev. ES may be hand-picked or binned to perform better but I don't think anyone can verify that.
A question about the Q6600... Can you lower the multi on this chip (i.e. to x7 or x8?)
Like another said, I refuse to pay the current asking price. I am waiting on the price cut.
From what I've read here, and on the EVGA forums, overclocking a quad core (especially on a 680i) can be a real challenge and you may need all the flexibility at your disposal that you can get. For example, 425x8 might be easier than 377x9... it really depends on your CPU and board.
i believe the q6600 is locked at x9 just like the e6600
OC problems with Kents are either heat or chipset/FSB related. Lowering the multi won't help.

Yeah on my DFI ICFX3200-DR with same Q6600 B3 ES at 7x and 8x multi with GTL ref adjustments manage 409-411FSB but at 9x it dropped to 340-350FSB.
only Storm?? also 655 is a bit low on pressure, but if u only have 1 block it should matter.. 355 with petra's top ftw

I assume a lot of folks are considering the Q6600 after the immanent price drop... what about the X3220 (same chip with Xeon branding)?

i got it for a good deal thou. friend of mine wnated to buy the qx6700 and
bought this one. so he gave me a deal on it.
To my knowledge there hasn't been anything in the Intel roadmap regarding Xeon price cuts. This, of course, doesn't mean there *arent* going to be price reductions on Xeons. It seems a like it would be a little silly not to cut Xeon prices as there's no marketing benefit, that I can see, to keeping Conroe and Kentsfield Xeons at an unbalanced price point.

Has anyone tried using a quad core in current 965 chipset boards?
I am running a Q6600 in a Shuttle SFF SD39P2 at 9x333 = 3ghz at stock voltage and runs like a champ. Temp went up 2 degrees when going from 2.4ghz to 3.0ghz so I suspect I have a killer chip.
mines running just nice at 9x401 fsb with 1.45 vcore ..I removed my vdroop mod before i insatalled the cpu. and it seems ok at 3.6ghz i wont push it any harder untill i recieve my chill control back as im just relying on the sensor on the mother board for evap temps..Asus probe and speed fan my temps are stuck on -2c it dosnt change..i dont know why but i would like it fixed..E6600 never had this problem..

Nope i havnt tried anything harder as yet..this cpu is performing better than my E6600 on less vcore.
so im hopeing 4ghz..but not untill i have my chill control back.
im blind atm what i see temp wise is only Gosple.
orthos you need 2 x orthos running for 100 % load..and yes i will run 4x sp004 just give me a chance i have had cpu 2 days...

Well since nothing but Extreme series chips seem to be able to be adjusted according to the BadAxe2 thread, I would venture a guess that.. no... the Q6600 is not adjustable with current BIOS's but I have no first hand knowledge.Quote:

I just got my q6600 today, as far as the multiplier, I can set it in the bios with my p5b deluxe and according to CPUz the multiplier is changed. The strange thing is the bios post screen and bios info say I'm running 3.6ghz but cpuz reports 3.2ghz 400x8.
Also another thing, no problems at all with 4gb 4x1gb of memory and 400fsb so far with initial testing with my old Asus P5B Deluxe. :)

Take a quad core system Install Windows, VMWare and 2 instances of Linux. Assign each vm 2 procs. Set the affinity to cpu's 1 and 2 to the first one, and 3 and 4 to the second.
Looks like about 3077 ppd with P2608's 13 minutes per frame per vm.

Hi guys. I'm trying to find info on the Q6600s... Thing is, I'd like to get one of them after the price drops, and boost it up to E6850 levels (only with four cores, instead of two... hehe).
I have, however, some twisted requirements. I don't like heat. So I undervolt as much as I can (I have one E4300 that is able to go insanely low on voltages at stock cooling; the E6400 is not so good, though, but it does accept much lower voltages than normal). So I'd like a chip capable of 333MHz (won't go higher than that) at stock voltages, or even lower, if at all possible.
Would you be so kind to tell me what codes to look for when getting one? Also, since G0 stepping C2Qs / X32xx Xeons are due for mass availability by the time the price drops (actually, more like in a week and a half, not a whole month... lol), should better temps and "voltage abilities" be expected with those chips?

The G0 stepping should let you get 3ghz with a good bit less than stock volts. I could run 333x9 on my Q6600 with 1.21v on my P5N-E SLi (mobo fsb limit). I haven't tried it on my QuadGT, as I have no reason to clock it that low.
Oh, man, those words are music to my ears... Running @ 3GHz undervolted is something wicked... Gotta get me one of those, for sure! When you say "I could run...", you're referring to a retail B3-stepping, right? If so, can you post the code? It would be a good starting point...
Btw, I know this sounds silly, but does any of you know if it's possible to run a Quad on a 945G-based motherboard? ASRock even has an 865G-based mobo capable of handling quads (not to mention the Via PM900-based one :rolleyes: ...), yet I've NEVER seen 945G-based boards capable of that thing...

might need to disable something in the bios (speedstep?) that's causing the cpu to throttle down when idling
whatever the multiplier the higher the fsb the better. less than 400ish on the fsb at high cpu clocks and you can expect a bottleneck. this was beat to death over on the evga forums 6 months ago, that's why they came out with the A1 revision for 680i which hits between 400 to 450FSB on quads. of course if SLI isn't on the menu then there's better boards to be found.

I can't quote the link but there was, and probably still is, a pdf on intels website which was a notice to resellers about the Q6600 changing to G0 stepping. Someone posted the link on these forums once and I took a quick look. I think the date for availablilty was 27 July.
Let me be the one to answer that. Please take a look at this TG Daily news from April 28th: it clearly states G0 stepping CPUs will be the Q6600 and X3210/X3220 Xeons, and will be available starting May 11th (that is, last month... hehe), with general availability expected for July 19th, which is to say three days before the price drop.
There are probably some G0s on sale right now, but they probably go to OEMs (Dell, HP, Apple, etc.), so you would be hard pressed to find one at a store near you. But keep an eye out, and check the spec number: anything different from "SL9UM" means that it is not B3-stepping (and steppings below that one are ES chips... hehe).
One thing I find odd, though... The price drops are expected just after the new stepping has had time to mature. What could that mean?
